As an ex SA military vet in my 60’s i tend to agree with you
I have my gear arranged in 3 levels
- level 1 : the basics or absolute minimum gear you would need over and above your edc,
- level 2 : rifle / shotgun plus ammo plus cleaning kits and add ammo for the level 1 handgun and gloves
- level 3 : 35 litre back pack with 3L bladder, extended stay protein food, change of clothes, full med kit with prescription meds, nice to haves extra not in lvls 1 & 2

Recently made 61 days out of my 19.8 pound backpack. I'm in the woods once a week for the last 32 years practicing with my equipment. I'm an ex Army Ranger. My weapon of choice that I have procured my food with is a Barnett Cobra slingshot with a 5/8 ball bearing as ammo. It's quiet,easy to carry ,and you can find ammo just about anywhere. Over the last 5 years I have gotten prey good with that into the 50 yard range. I still make military hikes. I'm now 64 years old and eat, sleep and breathe survival and self defense. Love my life. No regrets. Enjoyed the video.

The line gear is essential for easy deployment and use in the field! Good video with useful information! I have done this for years since the 80's in the service! I always carry a EDC on my person and a small backup at all times kits, chest rig or vest for stealth, shoulder bag or havesack, and a ruck sack. I have the 5 C'S of survival in all four line kits including 2 extra mag's in each line kit.
Yessir you know the deal! I like the extra mags in each line. Depending on the situation, I have 180 rounds vacuum sealed ready to stow in my assault pack.
Line system fully applies, its why most people running plate carriers are failing, because they dont have warbelt.
Your warbelt is your absolute first line bugout. My Ronin warbelt has my medical, my multitool, my flashlight, my solar charged lighter, solar charger, my magazines, my sidearm, and smoke grenades to pop smoke.

@@TheSurvivalOutpost correct Senshi is a 2 line belt. Cobra buckles, with a rates 4,000lb D-ring hookup(which can save your life in a pinch). One layer velcro, the second is the belt. I've put 10,000+ rounds on targets running that belt ragged. It never moves, eliminates sweat/chaffing from larger belts.

I don't use a Baofeng but I typically keep my radio mounted to my left shoulder although I am tossing around the idea of moving center mass above the mag pouches.
Yeah I keep my radio in the chest rig pouch and run the ear piece which is fairly solid.

Layering is an interesting and useful concept. I have used a chest rig and back pack, but the belt stuff usually ends up in my pockets or elsewhere in the other packs. Good video. Thanks for sharing.

Everyone else seems hung up on their packs.
I am not a fan of the vests. I live in Texas which is a hot climate. Vests in summer get even hotter. Best to have as much open territory around your body as possible to release sweat.
I have an old school military LBE or LCE. I have heard them called both. If someone is looking for one find an H strap they are better than the Y straps. Make the belt load ride more evenly.
Replace the metal clips with 550 cord, square knot with two half hitches and burn it. Will never come loose. Most Molle pouches will work with belt just fine. For the ones you do not move a lot tie them on.
I agree about the vests, the heat is an issue here in Florida as well. Plate carrier is the worst, chest rig is better, the traditional LBE rig I showed in the beginning is excellent for hot/humid environments. Great points about upgrading the old issue kit.
Thank you for the video. The LINE System. I love it! I've been trying to figure out how to layer and modularize my gear and was getting stuck. I too had the idea of using a lumbar pack (similar to your LB belt) but that makes me feel like I will stick out like a sore thumb. I'd rather be more gray man and just have it all in a backpack. But then that means I can't add a BOB backpack module since I'd already have something on my back. I think I'm going to end up going with the lumbar pack and just suck it up and look obvious. It will be worth it to have the space to add a backpack if/when needed. I love modularizing. It is so much better organized and saves space in the long run and makes it so much easier to grab what you need and go.
Glad you liked it Aubrey. Bear in mind you don't "need" a big ole obvious molle belt like I demoed. You achieve the same goal by using a stiff 1.5 inch riggers belt. Here's an example. Pricey but it will get you started in the right direction on Google :)

I’ve also adopted a line system for my load out. The base is a Condor battle belt with an “H” harness. It’s very modular and allows for multiple setups. Like you I also have a basic survival kit with a military poncho, sidearm, extra mags, food, med kit, IFAC, etc...loaded on the belt. I have a 3lt Source water carrier system that I can easily mount or remove depending on the situation. The next level is my BAE Industries Molle II IOTV Gen II plate carrier. I typically run it slick and only mount a SEKRI US Army IFAK II on the lower back and a couple of extra Mag pouches on the left side. The next level is my BAE. Industries Molle II Tactical Assault Panel (TAP). It of course easily attaches to the front of the IOTV via a quick release system. I load 6 - 8 mags, a multitool, a Gerber LMF II Infantry Knife, BAE Improved IFAK, multiple CAT Tourniquets, etc...on the IOTV. This system is designed to marry perfectly to the next line... My US Army BAE Industries Molle II Medium Rucksack. There I carry extra food, Tennier Industries US Military Sleep System (MSS), extra clothes, tarp, tent, etc...This setup has been pretty expensive for me to put together especially due to the fact that it’s all in OCP Multicam but it’s all quality gear. I believe in the “Buy cheap...Buy twice” philosophy. It’s taken me longer to do it. I had to save up for the expensive stuff. The IOTV came complete with all the components (except the shoulder covers) and level III soft armor in OCP Multicam. It was never used surplus and trust me...It was expensive but again I know it’s quality. I know I can depend on it if I ever, God forbid, need it. Thanks for sharing sir. If you ever figure out the Baeofeng PTT issue please make a video on it. I’m in the same boats as you are with that issue.
Outstanding rig, how you liking the TAP? I understand the QR system is very easy to work with BUT it stays in place very well. And great you mention multi tourniquets, one of my friends with combat experience made it clear to me that if I need one tourni...odds are I'm going to need another one :) Thanks for sharing your loadout, well done.
The Survival Outpost I actually misspoke. My IOTV is a Gen II. The TAP DOES NOT attach via QR. it just uses a couple of buckles on the side and 2 vertical straps that attach via buckles that have Molle adaptable straps. It goes on and off very easily and also has a “H” harness that attaches to it so you can wear it by itself or over a FLC. The entire TAP will stay attached to the IOTV if you pull the QR. There’s no actual QR for the TAP. The QR for the IOTV works great. I’ve dumped it numerous times to gain muscle memory as to where the ripcord is. It’s a process to put it back together. As far as IFAKs and Tourniquets go...I carry 2 complete IFAKs with my full load out incase one is not enough. Also...I have 4 extremities so I always carry at least 4 CAT tourniquets on all my load outs. The development of the SOFT T and CAT tourniquets have helped medics and corpsmen save more servicemen I think than any other tool in their kit over recent years. Now even police officers are trained to use them and they carry them in their patrol vehicles. There benefits are immeasurable so you can never carry too many IMHO. Thanks again for sharing brother.

I could ask questions like this all day but it doesn't take long before people start to get the picture. Also some viruses thrive in warmer weather, so this should also be taken into account.

The line idea is sound. I think of it as layered missions. First layer, 24 hours away from home, with minimal gear, food and water. A small, inconspicuous pack that no one would notice, because it always has to be in reach.
Second layer is 3 nights/4 days on a mission of moving from point A to point B to get home. (Or some other safe place.) Could be 10 to 60 miles.This would have the gear and food, but would need to find 2 or 3 days of water (because of the weight, of course). Third layer is a kit of gear for uncertain duration out and alone, with a week or two of food but having to find the water.
The first layer would be minimal weight. The second maybe 10-15 pounds of additional gear and 6-8 pounds of food and water, depending on the weather.
The third layer would easily add another 10 pounds of gear, but also 10-15 pounds of food. Plus the packs for the first two layers. Obviously, the weight has become a real burden. Even ultralight backpackers are challenged when times get past a week alone, and that's without weapon and ammo. Now add the weight and volume of gun(s) and ammo.
Clearly this system sounds great but is breaking down on the shoals of reality. It gets worse when you consider that the great majority of people are starting from urban or suburban environments where that tactical stuff you wear screams out "hey, I've got some really great stuff here. Come and take it from me." And now consider a family man with responsibilities.
You've got the makings of a good approach, but in practical terms, it's pretty useless so far.
I like how you think through the layers. One can still stay low key and low profile AND utilize "tactical" gear. For example, the war belt can be removed and you can use a quality rigger belt to mount basic pouches, holster, etc. This is easily concealed under a light jacket. That's the first line. Then a second line low profile option would be a minimalist rig from Haley S or the Partisan chest rig from Gadsden Dynamics. Both the first and second line kit can be easily folded up and stowed in a main pack for maximum concealability.
Great video brother. Been looking at your vids for tips on my own bugout bag. Currently rocking the Molle 2 army surplus rucksack. Can't beat it for around 50 bucks. Tons of space and rock solid materials, if a bit on the heavy side.
Love the Molle 2 gear. I bought the rifleman package deal years ago and as you can see, still using some of the components. The Molle 2 ruck is solid.
People like to talk trash about military rucks as bug out bags, but for the money and durability, you can't beat them. I'd like to have them all, Large ALICE, MOLLE 2, ILBE, and FILBE. I personally run the ILBE right now. In true SHTF, especially long term, I'd ten to one rather take my chances with my ILBE versus a Gregory or an Osprey. I think I'll leave that to the hipster preppers lol.
@@joeyjones9041 Absolutely. For 50 bucks I couldn't find another pack with such capacity and high quality materials anywhere else. Sure the pack is heavy but in a bug out situation, I'd much rather have a heavier pack made with top of the line materials with the capability to hold up to 125lbs, over a hiking pack that can only support up to 45lbs and the fabric will tear on any branch caught on it.

I preferr the Chicom chest rig. Its light, its though, its durable, its easily fixable, and it's simple to use. I do not like those tactical rigs and equipment. I like mine simple with ease of use. Great video.

If you are looking for PTT for the Baufeng UV5R check out the EARMOR OPSMEN M32 MOD3, you will have to get their version of the PTT switch only becasue they use the real NATO pin designations on their headset cable, but it connects seamless to the Baufeng or any radio with the Kenwood style connector. They have a NRR of 23 decibels almost as good as Peltor's but without the hefty $600 price tag, granted the Earmor's are Airsoft grade but if they do the job why not?
I got a surplus LBV with a basic rifleman setup along with the Gerber Strongarm as well, hoping to do a video in the near future but I got some really important stuff to take care of in the next 6 months.

Check out the PLATEminus PC from blue force gear if in the market for one. Lightest PC out there as far as I know. I also rock an AK with bakes and sposn sso pouches.
I run it minimalist style... I’m in the desert along the border and less things hanging off the side the less I get entangled in mesquite. 3 mag pouch with 1 holding a handgun as it was designed for it. 3 mags for each firearm. Tear away sso ifak, sso dump pouch, double duty to carry anything useful I find along the way.
I still got some of my old TA-50 but use very little of it. I could keep my PC with plates and run the OG Vest sometimes but I just take them out.

Once i found a secure location, I run my full tactical gear and related boom sticks. However I prefer not to run around waving evil guns on TH-cam for obvious reasons. I've heard good things about the PLATEminus PC, thanks for confirming. Bakes and SSO is life. That minimalist rig is great since its super easy to stow in a main pack if needed to go a bit more low profile.

Man Safariland ain't cheap lol, I'm looking at a mid ride battle belt set up for my Glock 19X. Honestly tho, it is the best set up on the market imo.
I know everyone loves to get the chest rig and load it up with pouches, but I recommend one with a zipper or snap clips or something to open the vest/ chest rig up while in the prone. 0:13 classic example of trying to get low, yet all the mag pouches prevent it......
If you're going to carry 6 mags in your rig as most do, civi and mil, then yes it is about an inch you sacrifice getting prone and of course inches count when bullets are flying. I see your point about potential for unzipping the vest or unsnapping to get lower but imagine doing that and then forgetting you did, your shit flys everywhere when you get up to move. The optimal config for most trigger pullers is 4 mags across the front single row, one mag in the weapon and one fast mag.

I use to run ranges and see the guys come to the range with mag pouches all over the front, and when it came time to shoot from different positions, it always became a problem. Just me offering a different look at it or something to think of is all, no disrespect intended to you or anyone reading this
All good no worries, I imagine as a range xo you've seen some wild configs LOL. Probably the biggest issue I noticed when going prone was not so much at double stack mag config but the fact that my pack frame prevents me from looking forward. I have to roll kinda sideaways to get a good look...with an internal frame that is not an issue.

Recently i was looking at line gear. I was planning on getting a battle belt and chest rig, probably Condor or 5.11 since they're fairly cheap. Alas i got sidelined by some stuff, but that will definitely be a purchase in the future. Instead, I'm getting an AR15, ten pmags, 1000 rounds, a sling, and possibly some magpul furniture and optics. All the assault rifle ban rhetoric has me feeling the urgency to make my purchase. It sets me back on finishing my INCH bag, but i have plenty of time for that hopefully, but AR15, not so much. I just hope gun laws hold off enough for me to get a Glock 19X, Mossberg 590, Remington 700 with scope, and Ruger 10/22. I have a family, so not all of that's mine lol. Anyway, just thought it's funny, web gear has been on my mind and this video comes out. Great minds I guess lmao.

You can always finish the backpack and long range kit whenever, that's not going to be get banned...at least not yet :) That's an excellent choice in solid platforms, G19 (Love it), Mossberg 590 (I Have a 500), Remy 700 (Quality DMR) and the 10/22...what else do you need :)
Try living in California. We are constantly having to make purchases based on bans. Many guys maxed out their credit cards during the one week we could buy standard capacity magazines.
Purchase some reloading kits for you weapons. You can buy single round reloaders for each caliber. You do not need a huge setup.
So far as I can tell there is no safe reloading of a .22 Long Rifle.
One of your biggest problems for bug out especially if you are walking is ammo weight. 1500 rounds of .22 weighs 20 lbs. Ammo takes up a lot of your carry capacity. There is a balance.

I run a Russian jaeger chest rig with a vertx bag, or if I need to go on a raid a duffle bag/ backpack. For weapon akp 7.62x39, plum magpul furniture with triangle stock. I live in a more rural area, so cammo and trees are the optimal way to avoid conflict.
I like this setup, especially the Jaeger chest rig. you have an AK103? I can't remember which one is 7.62x39 w/ the triangle folder...obviously AKS-74U is most famous. Love plum too, great choice.

How is it going prone with that rig? Looks like it may be a bit difficult.
Prone is not a big deal until you put on the main pack, then the frame prevents you from staying prone and getting a good look around. I do find that if I ran three mags up from, I can obviously get lower to the ground. The new chest rig build I have in the works has mag inserts build into the front panel, making it very slick and low profile.

a rain cover can be used to keep the pack dry and the Bic lighter works under wet conditions, dry conditions, any conditions tbh.

What type of gear would you carry if you have to go back and forth from the woods to an urban environment to get water, carry two bags? I'd only have to go into the urban area every other day. I'd obviously need a couple pairs of clothing
Depending on what I'm wearing I will pack a full change of civilian clothes or simply wear clothes that work well enough in either AO

I have the massive plastic mug that goes over the top, also the modern version of the 58 is the crusader cup a steel mug that fits around the bottom of the bottle so you can have it all as one kit.

Sure I carry I both because the age old survival rule: Two is one, one is none. When that Bic runs out of fluid or the flint striker breaks, the firesteel ALWAYS works.
I run Direct Action Gear which is top of the line unfortunately cost is the limitation for most. I have a lot of Condor gear also that I have in reserve for other people and for the price they produce some great gear. End of the day it’s the individual and not the gear that makes the biggest difference.
I love DA, but can't justify a new pack right now. The Dragon Egg in Pencott is nice tho! And I agree the person not the gear is the deciding factor.
The Survival Outpost I have the packs also but I was referring the plate carrier and battle belt. Their new line of gear is really high quality.

What do you do with your chest rig and war belt when you're in an urban environment and or trying to conceal it from people and aren't in a vehicle, or having a vehicle isn't accessible?
I wouldn't bring out that out in a public space unless A) I was at a political rally and chose to wear the gear for a specific threat situation or B) Total no rule of law. For everything else I built a very low profile tactical belt with just the basics...a few mag pouches, blow out kit and holster.

So yes and no. I wear the chest rig with main pack, however a typical war belt or similar LBV doesn't fit with a main pack so in that setup, I pair the chest rig and war belt with a smaller assault pack or hydro pack that doesn't have a large hip belt. Lots of different ways to configure the gear.
The Survival Outpost ---GOT IT. THANKS. I have a load-bearing vest but never got around to trying it with the 80-85L pack. I don't think they mix, but a chest rig is a good idea.
@@jefffriedberg Yep the typical LBV won't work because the waist belt would have to go directly over the LBV belt which has pouches etc. But the chest rig works fine. The Tactical Tailor MAV is a good option to start with...or a chest rig with integrated mag pouches. Keep a smaller profile and enables you to get lower to the ground.
I've gone out with an lbv, front load 40l assault pack(with camel back attached to front), and my giant ruck on the back. The Hike to base camp was 4 miles. And I stayed for 5 days. XD hiking in was a b$#*& leaving was so much better lmao.
That hot shower and chow is always welcome when you get home to civilization :)

I would be more worried about the handle of your blade crushing your ribs if you fall or something, more than I would be about the Glock going of and shooting my leg, highly unlikely.
That was a concern but after testing it out I could not make that happen. If the blade was mounted lower it would have been an issue.

My edc is my Böker folder, cellphone, and pencil. I use to carry a pen light in my jacket, along with a credit card knife, but meh.... I need to separate necessities to molle pouches so I can do easy swaps from day pack to my 72 hr. And on my chest rig I load it out when I use it...

@@TheSurvivalOutpost I'm not a fan of dedicated gear. I use my standard issue LBV. When I have my ruck or 72 HR bag I wear it with my load out. Along with my med kit and other goodies. I keep a pouch empty in case I want to roam around without all the weight. Throw some hooah bars and jerkey in it and it replaces a day pack.
The only brand gear I carry is a Fox Tactical 69L and the Walmart molle pack that I believe you did a video on. The rest is my old military gear and things I used while in lol.
If you haven't already, take a look at the Foxtrot MK2 by Helikon-Tex. Similar butt pack.

Make some choices in the gear you're going to rely on, and sell some of that which doesn't make the cut. Use that money to buy some body armor. None of us is going to utilize 2 or 3 different rucks, belts, etc. Get your armor situation squared away.
Good idea, but what you saw there is my essential. One setup for wilderness survival, one setup for hostile situations (war belt, chest rig, pack). Now....if I could find a company to hook up some armor and PC for review, that would be perfect :)

That's the ExoMtn k2 3500 pack, my main pack. An amazing pack. I've had both the ILBE and FILBE which is much better, but managed to snag the K2 and can't see myself ever needing another long range bag. Weight unloaded is 5lbs.

I'm 230lbs, my main bugout load out (1 change of shirt, boxers, socks... sleeping/shelter gear of 1 woobie, 1 mylar tarp, 1 ripstop tar..., rain goretex jacket/pants... cold weather glove liners, neck gaiter, lightweight fleece shirt... firestarter kit of 3 bic lighters, 1 ferro Rod, 1 zippo, and cotton balls... cooking kit of SS morakniv knife, mini multi tool, titanium spork, usgi canteen, usgi ss canteen cup for boiling and cooking/ss Ozark cup for drinking and eating... 1100 Paracord, ductape, zip ties... Small Ziploc mini gun tool bag with batteries, star/Allen keys, cleaning kit for my guns/red dots... 2 72 hour SOS food packs... 1 full/complete ifak... 1 Camelback pack, with 3 liter reservoir, with 1 liter of water in it... Glock 19 loaded and w/1 in chamber, 4 extra mags loaded. That is 26 lbs right there alone... 24 lbs when I'm carrying my Glock 19 and two spare mags on my hip. Plus I still have to carry or wear my 8lbs chest rig that has 3 AR 556 30 round Pmags, and 3 9mm 20 round mags... And my 10lbs war belt that includes 2 AR 556 30 round Pmags, 2 9mm 20 round mags, mag dump pouch, mini ifak with chest seals, gauze, tape and tourniquet, my EDC knife, my holster with Canik TP9SFX with Red Dot RMR and flashlight, and a multi tool. That's 42 lbs total. It would be 53 lbs if I added the ILBE main pack to carry my gear. It's doable, but it is a pain in the ass, and forget a warbelt or carrying a pistol on your hip, the ible kidney straps and amazing yet so damn thick and bulky lol. So I decided to throw all my gear in my 30L bag pack, and conceal my chest rig and warbelt under my BDU jacket I wear, and my warbelt will be on my waist. It's not perfect, but no bugout kit/load out is perfect, especially bags, weight, sizes, etc... I can fully conceal everything in my ILBE pack at the expense of adding 11 lbs from the pack itself and losing ability to hip carry a firearm, or trade complete concealment and grey man status, for lightweight, balanced, semi concealment, semi tactical, defensive and evasive load out. I chose the latter, lightweight and able to protect myself. Being 110% grey man sounds good, but in reality, if people are fucking with someone with carrying a visible gun, they're already and definitely fucking with everyone, including someone they don't see with a gun, grey man or not, they don't know the weapon.is concealed if there is a weapon. So at that point I see it better to remain evasive and get the hell out of dodge, but I believe in having my weapon on hand on standby while I'm moving, as well to show force. Most civilians on the street aren't armed with guns, and even if they are, when they see someone with a gun, they usually go the other direction or run. It's not like the movies (the purge) people aren't coming after you especially when you're visibly armed, even if they're out the rioting and causing hell, they're jumping and assaulting people that are unarmed and alone. And besides, you're supposed to be evasive and on the move, not standing or moving along the idiots. Just my ideas and load out. Figured I'd share

Also as much as I like the MOLLE webbing I do not trust it. 550 cord square knot and two half hitches. Tie the pouches you do not change out IN PLACE.
After you get all your gear squared up. Jump up and down if you jingle jangle, tape and tie as needed till all you hear is your body hitting the ground.
