My grandpa is a big fan of westerns and I watched this movie with him. He didn’t know the name of the movie and only arrived at the end of the opening credits. At the end, I asked if he liked the movie and he was really excited saying “Django was the hero all along, not Schultz! That’s so cool!”. For him, the death of Schultz was an even bigger plot twist, because he thought he was the main character and he was so surprised to see that it was Django who would save the day. He had never seen a western with a black hero before.
Calvin's sister flying back like that is a reference to super old westerns, back when it was considered a bit taboo to have a woman die in frame, so they'd literally get yanked out of the shot by rope or cane absurdly lol.

The name is taken from a movie called The Wicked Dreams of Paula Schultz, from 1968. And yes in the Tarantinoverse she can be related to King Schultz. Archie Hickox is like the great-grandfather of Pete Hickox (Tim Roth's character in The Hateful Eight).
Such a shame DiCaprio didn't win an award for his performance especially when he actually did cut his hand when he slammed it down on the glass yet kept acting like it was nothing!
I love how we were led to believe that Candy was the head man at his home, it turns out Samuel Jackson was the real villain. The moment he figured out their scheme the camera shifts the power dynamic. It’s truly amazing story telling.
That’s honestly the best part of this movie to me. At the very beginning of Samuel Jackson’s character intro we are seeing that he is the one that deals with all the financial paperwork, and then we are immediately after shown him disagreeing with something candie is doing but choosing not to die on that hill. It shows that although he is the one who is responsible for much of what goes on, he is not the one that ultimately makes the decisions, just that he influences candy greatly into what decisions he ultimately makes. It’s like candie is a figurehead and stephen is the real puppermaster, he just can’t show it because of his slavery. I also love the scene where he drops his cane, the level of manipulation it takes to pull that off for years is insane, they did something similar in game of thrones and it wasn’t nearly as convincing. And stephen was hilarious to boot, by far one of my favorite characters from Tarantino, a true masterclass on the depth he can bring to his movies with him.
I still lament that Waltz had a scheduling conflict that prevented him from being tim Roths character in hateful 8. If only the internet hadnt spoiled the crap out of the movie, it would have been made earlier and Waltz would have been in it.
Something that's always been interesting about Schultz is how subtle his character actually progressed throughout the movie. He was already a good guy yes but at the start of the film you had a sense of how pragmatic he was and how much he kept a cool head. The more he gets involved with Django and deeper into Candyland and its horrors the more you can see it visibly start to affect him deeply, which is ironic because Django becomes the more level headed and calm of the two when in the beginning it's the other way around (Django adopts and implements a lot of Schultz's teachings as well; speech, importance of bounties, flair for the dramatic, etc). This culminates when Schultz has flashbacks of D'artagnan getting violently murdered and deciding that enough is enough (having that poetic moment of telling off Candie that Dumas was black was already a great 'fuck you' moment). The three could've left Candyland with no incident right then and there, but at that point Schultz couldn't care less with what happens to him and gains the one thing that mirrors Django's moment with the Brittle Brothers; Retribution. What a fantastic, nuanced character!
Yup, it's because for Schultz his hatred of slavery was more abstract, while for Django it was from direct experience. Schultz couldn't psychologically handle being physically in the midst of slavery and seeing it first hand, while Django was unfazed as he had already not just witnessed all the horrors but actually lived through it.
What I like about that aspect is that it plays with an old racial stereotype. In many "white saviour" stories, like this, the black "victim" is somewhat infantilised, depicted as very emotional and short of self-control, just as here, the closer Django gets to rescuing his wife the more we worry about him losing it and spoiling everything. But Tarantino takes that idea and totally turns it on its head. In the end, much to our surprise, it is Schultz that loses control, leaving Django to clear up the mess and become the real hero of the whole movie.

You could see the shock on his face in the beginning when Django took off his rag and Schultz saw all the scars from the whipping Django received. It's one thing to see slaves in chains, it's another to see a person's back covered in mostly scar tissue.
I saw this in a packed theater and it was the best movie experience of my life, everyone was having an absolute blast. This elderly african american couple next to us almost fell out of their seats laughing during the Jonah hill raid-bag scene lol.

It was so god damn funny seeing these old people laugh at brutal violence
I saw this opening night with my friend and we were the only people in the whole theater who weren't black. It was amazing. I missed a few of the lines during the funny parts because the laughter was so loud

It was more of an apology to Django that Schultz indulged in a last act of selfishness. His plan to be the great savior failed, but he still saw one way to have the last laugh, even if it meant putting Django and Broomhilda back into slavery or even death.
At first I wasn’t too fond of this movie. Thought it was long and just dragged. After a second watch I really enjoyed it. The characters, dialogue, the music, the beautiful shots. It really grew on me.
I went to this in theaters opening night in my hometown. Christmas 2012. Hands down one of the best movie theater experiences I’ve ever had. When the film ended I wanted a sequel right then and there. With that being said, this is probably my favorite QT movie.
Leonardo really cut his hand in that scene and still kept character. Him wiping blood on her was all improvised. He got a standing ovation from everyone after that scene was done
Pretty sure he didn't wipe blood on her. I think he finished the dialogue in the shot when he cut his hand. Then they cut and he got some medical attention.
It's pretty incredible how many people actually think a professional actor would smear their actual blood on a coworkers face without consent. Lawsuit much?
The cast have talked about it already. Yes, he cut his hand. But they stitched him up, put fake blood on his hand, and he wiped THAT on Kerry Washington's face. It is a biohazard to smear blood on someone's face. Even if the person does not have any diseases, one can still catch hepatitis A, which you can catch from exposure to even your OWN BLOOD (look it up on WebMD, and/or the website of the prestigious Mayo Clinic) if it sits too long. This is just one of countless bloodborne diseases one can get from exposure to the eyes, nose, and/or mouth. Now, the smearing of the fake blood might have been improvised (I don't recall hearing about that either way), but Leo was gushing blood and would've needed medical attention immediately after the take. Additionally, smearing actual blood on someone's face is a violation of numerous studio policies and criminal laws. It simply cannot happen. And, based on testimony from several cast members, it didn't.
I just rewatched The Good, the Bad amd the Ugly and I can see some nice homages Tarantino made in regards to the music and Samuel L. Jackson's last line (in TGTBATU, Tuco shouts "Blondie, you son of a-" and the music cuts him off). I really love how original Trantino is, yet still pays homage to his predecessors.
@@MrLogic88 I did see that, and I found it a little confusing... he said he liked parts of it a lot but also criticized it at the same time. It is much more similar though to Scorsese’s films whereas Tarantino only uses homages, not plot points and characters. Joker was really good but I didn’t find it nearly as original as any of Tarantino’s work, so I respect his opinion even though I don’t agree with it entirely

But it's all opinions and my is that this movie is the "only"(Real) black superhero movie. Don't get me wrong I'm a blade fan and all but for this generation Django is the most important character for black individuals across the world (and white people too, I am one after all) and I'm not talking about representation of blacks in movies I'm talking about truly influential movie for the human kind. Now that's a masterpiece.
Brandon, I've seen this film well over 20 times. It's my all time favorite and I as soon as I saw the thumbnail I clicked and gave you a like on the spot as nothing thrills me more than seeing a newcomer to my favorite things, particularly in the entertainment department.

One little detail I love about the Schultz/Django combo is their styles in fighting. Django is a quick draw while Schultz is a sharpshooter. Awesome detail!
The first scene with DiCaprio shows an older man, the "owner" of the other fighter. This is the actor who played the original Django back in 1966. It is another sign of Tarantino's genius that he lets both Djangos stand next to each other at the bar, the old Django asks the new one "What's your name?" the New Django replies "Django". Old Django continues to ask "Can you spell that?" The new Django not only spells but also informs his counterpart that the "D" is spoken silent in Django ... to which the original Django replies "I know ..." Incredibly good script at this point, excellently implemented. All the highest respect.
Tarintino is a genius. Some heavy issues and he tells it within a story that’s so entertaining and fulfilling. The cast was amazing to tell the story of the characters too. Without a doubt one of the best films in history.

The scene where Dicaprio cut his hand on the glass was done for real, and he was actually bleeding. He didn't even bother asking for the nurse till Tarantino said "Cut."
And if you are to believe IMDb trivia, DiCaprio had to pause a scene just because of how uncomfortable he got using the n-word so much, with Jackson telling him “please, this is just another Tuesday to us”.
Franco Nero, the other spectator watching the fight at Leo's intro was the original Django. He was also a villain in Die Hard 2. And I didn't realize it until I watched this video that James Remar is in this movie as 2 different characters. He was the first guy Christoph killed and the guy that killed Christoph. Interesting irony in that choice of casting. I love how Tarantino makes something new and fresh while simultaneously paying all kinds of tribute to movies of the past. Love the way he repurposes Ennio Morricone's great spaghetti western scores. The theme for Two Mules for Sister Sarah played early on after Christoph and Jamie met up.

He played the father of Doctor Blocks wife on "Death Proof" and "Planet Terror" to fresh up your memory a bit concerning the movies you watched recently... I love that moment. Such a cool way to acknowledge the original Django, after all who would know better than he that there was a silent D in there, lol
When Shultz says "I couldn't resist." That feeling is splendid.
It was more of an apology to Django that Schultz indulged in a last act of selfishness. His plan to be the great savior failed, but he still saw one way to have the last laugh, even if it meant putting Django and Broomhilda back into slavery or even death.
To me it's just sad cause I knew what was coming...
This movie has one of the best sound tracks of all time. Scored perfectly.

Ennio Morricone. He scored Good, Bad, and the Ugly (well, and the whole dollars trilogy). Which this movie draws a ton from.
At first I wasn’t too fond of this movie. Thought it was long and just dragged. After a second watch I really enjoyed it. The characters, dialogue, the music, the beautiful shots. It really grew on me.
I had this on the hateful eight, first i didnt like it so much, but now i adore it more and more everytime i watch it. :)

I went to this in theaters opening night in my hometown. Christmas 2012. Hands down one of the best movie theater experiences I’ve ever had. When the film ended I wanted a sequel right then and there. With that being said, this is probably my favorite QT movie.

Jamie Foxx won an Oscar for portraying Ray Charles in the film Ray. Foxx happens to also be an excellent musician and singer.

Leonardo really cut his hand in that scene and still kept character. Him wiping blood on her was all improvised. He got a standing ovation from everyone after that scene was done
Pretty sure he didn't wipe blood on her. I think he finished the dialogue in the shot when he cut his hand. Then they cut and he got some medical attention.

It's pretty incredible how many people actually think a professional actor would smear their actual blood on a coworkers face without consent. Lawsuit much?
The cast have talked about it already. Yes, he cut his hand. But they stitched him up, put fake blood on his hand, and he wiped THAT on Kerry Washington's face. It is a biohazard to smear blood on someone's face. Even if the person does not have any diseases, one can still catch hepatitis A, which you can catch from exposure to even your OWN BLOOD (look it up on WebMD, and/or the website of the prestigious Mayo Clinic) if it sits too long. This is just one of countless bloodborne diseases one can get from exposure to the eyes, nose, and/or mouth. Now, the smearing of the fake blood might have been improvised (I don't recall hearing about that either way), but Leo was gushing blood and would've needed medical attention immediately after the take. Additionally, smearing actual blood on someone's face is a violation of numerous studio policies and criminal laws. It simply cannot happen. And, based on testimony from several cast members, it didn't.
I love how much Tarantino shows the Nazis and KKK as absolute buffoons in this and Inglorious Basterds. The scene with the white hoods is hilarious!
True fact : Leo actually cut his hand on the table which required many stitches..but he stayed in character for the whole damn scene.
I love the "Are you positive" scene its so fast but shows the dynamic that is being established as teacher and student in a way

I just rewatched The Good, the Bad amd the Ugly and I can see some nice homages Tarantino made in regards to the music and Samuel L. Jackson's last line (in TGTBATU, Tuco shouts "Blondie, you son of a-" and the music cuts him off). I really love how original Trantino is, yet still pays homage to his predecessors.
And he had the nerve to criticize Todd Phillips.
@@MrLogic88 I did see that, and I found it a little confusing... he said he liked parts of it a lot but also criticized it at the same time. It is much more similar though to Scorsese’s films whereas Tarantino only uses homages, not plot points and characters. Joker was really good but I didn’t find it nearly as original as any of Tarantino’s work, so I respect his opinion even though I don’t agree with it entirely

Seeing this opening night in a sold out theater is one of my favorite movie experiences
The first scene with DiCaprio shows an older man, the "owner" of the other fighter. This is the actor who played the original Django back in 1966. It is another sign of Tarantino's genius that he lets both Djangos stand next to each other at the bar, the old Django asks the new one "What's your name?" the New Django replies "Django". Old Django continues to ask "Can you spell that?" The new Django not only spells but also informs his counterpart that the "D" is spoken silent in Django ... to which the original Django replies "I know ..." Incredibly good script at this point, excellently implemented. All the highest respect.
Tarintino is a genius. Some heavy issues and he tells it within a story that’s so entertaining and fulfilling. The cast was amazing to tell the story of the characters too. Without a doubt one of the best films in history.

I loved how ominous the scene is that introduces Mississippi, like they're entering Mordor. Totally appropriate too. Even other slave states considered it barbaric.

Seeing you enjoy the film this much brings me so much joy, man...this has got to be in my top 3 Tarantino films. Everything from the cinematography, to the soundtrack, to the absolutely amazing performances is perfection. While Hans Landa is an iconic character, Dr. Shultz has a special place in my heart.

The scene where Dicaprio cut his hand on the glass was done for real, and he was actually bleeding. He didn't even bother asking for the nurse till Tarantino said "Cut."
And if you are to believe IMDb trivia, DiCaprio had to pause a scene just because of how uncomfortable he got using the n-word so much, with Jackson telling him “please, this is just another Tuesday to us”.

Franco Nero, the other spectator watching the fight at Leo's intro was the original Django. He was also a villain in Die Hard 2. And I didn't realize it until I watched this video that James Remar is in this movie as 2 different characters. He was the first guy Christoph killed and the guy that killed Christoph. Interesting irony in that choice of casting. I love how Tarantino makes something new and fresh while simultaneously paying all kinds of tribute to movies of the past. Love the way he repurposes Ennio Morricone's great spaghetti western scores. The theme for Two Mules for Sister Sarah played early on after Christoph and Jamie met up.
Adore this movie and can't wait for the Hateful Eight reaction which may be his most underrated movie
