      And the funniest part of that was they would place the marshmallows on a stick over the lava and run away for a few moments because the lava was too hot to stand near. People could be 50 m away and still feel the heat.

    The visible area of Iwo Jima is a bit over 20 sq km, and it sits atop an underwater mountain about 2 km tall. That much uplift over that big an area means there's a LOT of magma down there, and the possibility of a large eruption is a definite future concern.

    By your estimation do you think this new eruption in iceland will last longer or shorter than the one a year ago. Maybe higher initial lava output=quicker exhaustion of lava supply?

    • @sigisoltau6073
      @sigisoltau6073 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Longer. There's over 300 million cubic meters of magma that could reach the surface, and that's the minimum estimate. If that's true then at the current rate of 17 cubic meters the eruption could last 204 days.

      @@thomasneal9291 Nope. That's not correct. 10-20 erupting at once is average. Why would you write false info like that?
      "At any given time, about 10-20 volcanoes are erupting on average, and it could be imagined that this number sometimes peaks to about 30-50 erupting volcanoes (on land). Many more than that is very unlikely."

    • @SpaceLover-he9fj
      @SpaceLover-he9fj 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are actually incorrect. According to more reliable sources including the Global Volcanism Program and Oregon State University, the average number of volcanoes erupting at any given time is about 40-50 or even 60. If you are worried, Don’t be because we live on a geologically active planet. In a way, it is “alive” compared to other objects in the Solar System like Mars, The Moon and Venus. Others like Io, one of Jupiter’s Galilean moons, are also geologically active. As for Geology Hub’s answer, he said that 50 volcanoes erupting at any given time is average. He said it in the video for Volcano news stories on January 30, 2022. Try searching for it. Finally, your sources might be obsolete as it might have been from a time where many volcanoes were remote and were not monitored with Webcams, equipment, seismographs, tiltmeters, etc. Please provide your source.

    The Philippines had a major earthquake last July 27, 2022. Hopefully it ain't "awakening" something.

      The last one happened almost 200 years ago (Tambora) and before it, has around 500-year gap (Rinjani) - or we might have missed something (considering there are potential mystery eruptions between Rinjani and Tambora's timeline)

    • @Dragrath1
      @Dragrath1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mateberg note that you can't apply statistical averages like that as each event is at least in principal independent and thus if a VEI 7 eruption occurs every other system which could potentially cause such an eruption still has the same odds of erupting as they did before. Now if their is an underlying phenomenon causing eruptions at a given rate to be correlated across the globe it is possible for events to be linked in such a manner but that isn't how we have set up our estimates and generally isn't how probabilities work. After all this is the assumed bias that leads to casinos getting rich as gamblers feel they are owed a "win".
