I’ve been wondering about that. While both Elon and Vivek can cover the salaries of DOGE Staff (probably making them SpaceX employees), it would just be fair if the government chipped in.

That’s the whole reason why DOGE isn’t a real cabinet-level department (regardless of the “Department” name) and actually exists outside of the Executive. I strongly suspect anyone DOGE hires won’t be one of the 4000 or so Federal jobs in the Plum Book that the President is allowed to hire. Same reason that the DOGE Co-Heads won’t be required to have Senate Confirmation, which would be hellish as Elon’s potential conflict of business interests would just be a distraction. I think the most straight forward approach for DOGE might be to keep it as an outside the cabinet body giving technical recommendations that someone else inside Trump’s cabinet, who has already been confirmed by the Senate, will implement.
