Big Bear Lake is the highest it's been since 2014! Lake history, new trails & predictions for summer

  • Hello, it's springtime in the mountains and we're loving it! The snow has been rapidly melting and that water is greatly assisting our lovely little lake in its mission to be FULL! How full is it, you ask? That's why I made this video, silly! Watch and find out and maybe even learn some Big Bear Lake history along the way. From the original "rock dam" construction in 1884, to the amounts the lake has risen after past winter seasons we've got a lot to discuss here today! Also worth noting...I finally got a lapel mic (lap mic for short)! You'll probably notice the improvement in audio quality, less wind noise and clearness of my voice. If you like it, let me know!
    Hope you check out some of my other Big Bear Lake videos, I've made quite a few in the past 2 months that are full of beautiful images, video, updates and additional history. I'm sure you'll enjoy my other videos if you like this one.
    In my next video, I want to introduce you to Big Bear Lake up close and personal. I will be getting my paddle board out on the water soon enough to bring y'all the best view of some amazing landmarks of Big Bear like "Garstin Island", "Boulder Bay", "Grout Creek/Bay" and the "Solar Observatory" amongst others!
    Hope to see you out in Big Bear one day! Say hi to me if you want, I'm usually pretty friendly :)
    Thanks for watching!

    When I moved up here in 1964, I could walk from Metcalf Bay to Fawnskin via the dry lake bed. In 1969 Big Bear valley received 6 to 10 feet of snow and subsequent years of more than average years of snow and summer rain brought the level up. This comes and goes in my 59 years in Big Bear Lake!

      Don you are a legend to give us some personal experience memories! I love it! It's so tough to conceive the lake being that low. 59 years in BB is many more than me and I praise you for sharing! It seems like it's those big storms plus the rain that gives that lake what it needs after so many dry years.

    I’m here in Big Bear, have inspected the level of the lake first hand, and hereby certify that the lake is way, way up! Further, the ground within 15 feet of the lake edge is saturated with water - standing on what was firm ground now has you sinking up to the ankles -, so Daniel’s prediction of much more increased depth is in the bag.

    • @DanielMorello
      @DanielMorello  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That’s good to hear some secondary confirmation reports! Shocking, how much is still flowing into the lake from every angle, little streams are still flowing, the creeks are gushing and there’s still a very large snow pack up on the south Resort side, as well as on the north facing slopes on the north side that we can’t see from the valley floor 👍

    • @DanielMorello
      @DanielMorello  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      BB Lake should come up a few more feet and I hope the years to follow are the same! A decade ago or so I had a neighbor who stated something similar, is there a controversy about the lake level and MWD?

    Any idea what is the projected lake level is after May?

    • @DanielMorello
      @DanielMorello  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The predictions are all over the place, I believe based on what we have in the snowpack at the resorts, the rate of flow from the major creeks/streams and consistent warming through the month we should see 3.5 feet more. I based this number on taking the average of what the lake has risen over the past 15 weeks, Jan-now, and keeping fingers crossed!

      We’re only about 6 feet down at this point. It seems that lake will come up 1 to 2 inches for another few weeks then taper off coming up, but will still sustain itself instead of showing a decrease in capacity due to the creeks, still running quite well for this time of year. 👏
