      You never know if your reputable source was scammed by somebody without noticing. They could accidentally pass a quick-switch fake to you without knowing. Every single time you accept a new coin you should test it or have the dealer test it. 100% of the time you need to witness a test upon purchase.

    • @Tsl4Lf
      @Tsl4Lf 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @RedShiftedDollar reputable dealers should have a gold testor and authenticate and guarantee all their coins are real. If you buy a fake coin from them they should pay you back. That's what highly reputable dealers do. If you buy a fake on ebay good luck getting your money back.

    • @RedShiftedDollar

      @@usptactWhen do you test? Nearly all dealers test everything, but you can't test everything all the time continuously. I know of reputable dealers who do not test every piece of gold at the moment they sell it. I still consider them reputable. But the most reputable thing a dealer can do is to prove authenticity for every piece sold just like they do for every piece received. Ironically these tests of proof take reputation out of the picture which is how a dealer can build the strongest reputation.
      There are lots of ways fakes can get swapped besides a sneaky customer trying a bait and switch. What if you have a bad employee? What if a burglar somehow swaps real for fake? It's possible to be burglarized without knowing, especially if all the inventory appears to be there. Even if you have a crooked employee who hasn't shown his/her unethical side, they will never be able to trick anyone if they have to test the gold at the point of sale.
      The bottom line is that reputation is not a valid test of authenticity. The only way to truly know is to test.
      This is the beauty of gold. It is easy to verify. This means you don't need to trust anyone but yourself and your own testing capabilities.

    I have the cheapest version of the Sigma with the small wand attachment too. It cost me $900. It works well enough. I test all gold bullion which works very well. I try to test slabbed gold, which sometimes works, sometimes does not (particularly on smaller slabbed coins). But, what the heck, they are in a slab, which is the only way I buy pre-33. I just don't bother to test silver, although I have some. It is less likely to be counterfeited and if I got fooled, I am not out that much cash. Bottom line, I highly recommend that you get at least a cheap Sigma, even if it galls you to give up cash that could have been turned into gold.

    I test all my metals although I don't always test the silver immediately. I think a Sigma is worth considering if you're a regular gold buyer. It's a pretty easy test (unlike testing specific gravity in a glass of water which is messy) and is pretty easy to take to a coin shop or a coin show

    I greatly appreciate this incredibly enlightening video. Throughout times of economic turbulence, gold and silver have earned a reputation for their stability. Yet, it's essential not to underestimate the significance of cryptocurrencies, which present distinct opportunities such as liquidity, around-the-clock market access, and the potential for significant profits. Embracing the realm of crypto trading in this digital age could prove to be a prudent choice for substantial expansion. Love my Sigma Pro Mini, it’s my go to testing equipment. But I do back this up with a GVS Bullion Tester, which tests a metal’s magnetism (which cannot be faked or manipulated). Both the Pro Mini and the GVS can test thru capsules and slabs, so they are great for preserving the numismatic value of the encased coin without prying it open.

      wrong! The basic Sigma only surface tests. The Pro, the Pro Mini, & the Investor test all the way through AND measure the thickness.
      Also the 'wonderful' XRF or xray scanners sell for 10x or 20x the price of a Sigma and also only surface test!
      The difference is a Sigma Pro will catch tungsten filled gold coins and bars. An XRF may not catch that (if the surface coating is real gold), unless you take core samples (drilling) or fire assay (melting)!
      Sigma Pro series pmv's are a valuable & cost effective solution.

But for me always purchase from the most reputable store in my city, The coin hits the scales, hit the SRF and gets a ring test at home. Possibly one of the most underrated tests is the ring test. In my view anyway, combine all of those and you should be good. I use a little metal rod for the ring test, and it risks putting a little tiny dent on the side of the coin but in my view it’s worth it..... any further suggestions anyone?

    You don't rely on any one test, even these conductivity devices when testing coins. You can also use magnetism as a screening tool as well. Perform at least two tests. If you check diameter, thickness, and weight, that's one test that relies on density characteristics. If you check by pinging, that's another test that relies on audio frequency characteristics. After visually verifying minting details and performing the previously mentioned tests, there isn't a need to go any further. It's more cost effective to conduct these tests than to buy one of the conductivity devices.

    "Reputable source" advice is bad advice. Why? It causes people to let their guard down. Reputable sources can themselves be victims of crime, and if a fake sneaks into their inventory without them knowing, they can accidentally pass it on to you. Always ask the dealer to run it over the sigma just before they hand it to you. It's super fast, easy, and it proves legitimacy for everyone.

    I like to use them to test at the shop when I buy.

    Simple. If the diameter, thickness, and weight all match the specs, it must be real. No need to buy a fancy machine.

    The Sigma easily get fulled by tungsten

    • @MrKiwi13605
      @MrKiwi13605 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      wrong! the sigma can be fooled by copper but it is the only tester (pro series) that will catch tungsten. you have been listening to the wrong bullshit.
      the sigma measures conductivity & dimensions. To use it properly you must do both tests. The dimensions tests always catches the copper fakes and the conductivity tests always catch the tungsten.

    • @jimmytwotone2127
      @jimmytwotone2127 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@2is1gold Put it on the pure gold setting and it's a 40% half not a 90% my mistake, I knew it read as Gold so try a 40% half dollar not 90% ......🥃

    • @MrKiwi13605
      @MrKiwi13605 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@jimmytwotone2127yes it is a failing on Sigmas part not to have profiles for gold less than 80%.
      The 40% silver tests as gold because they are also 40% copper. Copper & gold conductivity are VERY similar but their density is different by 250%. This means a 40% half dollar may pass the conductivity test but completely fail the dimension test.
      Finally you are misusing the device if you test with totally the wrong metal profile settings. How is that the tool's fault? Hmm perhaps that makes the operator the tool....
