- This is a tutorial on how to make a Christmas ornament out of paper called a Polish star. They look a lot like sea urchins.
Music by Jason Shaw / audionautix Jason Shaw@audionautix.com
I used 3.5 inch circles to make the segments and I used 10 segments per star.
These turned out remarkably well and actually look store bought when you are done with them.
When I Googled "Polish Star" I found a website where here is a lady selling these for $30 a piece!
Great video! My grandmother used to make these. She would save the silver wrappers out of cigarette packages to make the circles.
THANK YOU... I'm a 70 yr old grandma who lived in Germany in her teens, I learned to make these but had forgotten how, I stumbled upon your video via Pinterest. Your video is clean and concise. So many memories and I'm definitely going to make a few!
I’m 65 and clearly remember making them before I was in the first grade so I had to be about 5. That’s the last time I made them until today. My grandma was from Slovenia and my Pappy was German. We made many different Christmas ornaments.
My husband is polish. I will make these for my mother-in-law and father-in-law. They can always use more ornaments for their beautiful tree. Thanks for these easy instructions. Hopefully, I can do them as well as you did!!!!!
My mother-in-law (from Poznan) used to make these, but she became elderly, so I have taken it up, and made them for all the family last Christmas, from your video. They were all thrilled, and some even cried! They said it was giving them a piece of their childhood Christmas back. Thank you VERY much!
How sweet!!
I've been looking for good instructions for the Polish Star for years! We made this when I was a child (Kennedy was President) and I'm so thrilled to find your video! Thanks for bringing a childhood Christmas memory to life! Patty O
I made these Polish stars 45 years ago when they were demonstrated in Bette Homes and Gardens. I still have a few of them. I used solid color foil wrapping paper, they had a colorful, shiny finish, ready for hanging on the Christmas tree. Thanks for the instructions, good to see the craft is still alive.
We made these in 5 grade (1959) from Christmas wrapping paper. It was thicker in those days. Thank you for showing this project and reminding me how to do it! Love....
@Jennlm The hardest part to master is to get the points nice and small and pointy.
I find if you put the pencil tip just below the edge of the paper before rolling the edges you get a nice sharp point
I love crafting, I just happened to come across this video this week and was so excited because my husband is Polish. I made two of them and he was so excited and happy to receive them. Thank you for doing such a great job showing us how to make a Polish Star! You're amazing!
+Patty Politowicz Thank you! Glad you enjoyed the video.
I LOVE THESE STARS!!!
I know what I’m making for Christmas 2021. Thank you for sharing your talent with us! The stars are beautiful❤️
we also used to make this stars in Romania long time ago!I love them but it's a lot of work!we have to try to share this with our children!
I use coloured tissue paper and wallpaper paste. I use a needle and thread to string them all together. I have been making these since I was a child and I am now 50. I just called them spikey balls, me and my friends used to make them to sell to raise money for our girl guide group. I didn't know they were a Polish decoration, so thanks for the information, great to know where they originated.
Over 25 years ago I use to work in a factory in Canada and we use to do the same flower with the machine though. it use to be like half of this bow and with an adhesive on the back to be put on presents, I wish I had a picture of it , I would have posted it so you can see... Now I know how to do it by hand Thanks for the tutorial
ģreat and amazing I have no words to thank you GOD BLESS YOUR hands
I learned this technique when I was 8 years old in Germany, im middle school I was in Turkey, did this star at my craft class, everyone was amazed ❤
When I was little I use to make these together with my mom ... we bought 2 faced foil paper from a stationary store . One face was Gold and the other either green or red and the other foil paper was on one side either silver and the other blue or green. Now a days you can find them in many beautiful colors. The nice thing on them was that they were soooo shiny :)) "thanks for posting wonderful work"
Thank you! My Grandma made those when I was a child, I never learned how to do them. I still have quite a few of them. Can't believe they'd be over 20 years old. With your tutorial maybe I'll give them a go this year ;)
By the way, we call those ornaments "jeżyki" (at least at my house we do :) ), it means hedgehogs.
Thanks again, hope you have a great week. Love from Poland :)
+PaulitQa How fun this is to make. I love the tid bit you gave from Poland. Much appreciated. My husband is Polish and I made my first 2. I am so happy I found this Video. I love Poland.
I have watched several of your tuts after I have failed making projects from just reading the instructions or looking at photo tuts elsewhere, and you always make the process so effortless. Thank you so much for your clear instructions and easy to follow directions. I really appreciate that you have your materials ready and often prepared. Thanks so much!
@unAnnaNinja You can use whatever size circle you would like. You may just need to alter the size of the center portion (where in this one I used a nickle, you may need to use a quarter and you may need to use a bigger thicker pencil)
i finally finished mine after like 5 days of rolling the triangles with a pencil. Those took a while but the end result is gorgeous. i love them! thanks for this tutorial
These are so beautiful, can't wait to make some for my tree this year. I made 10 different snowflakes for my tree last year about 30 in all and then topped with a very large 3D star. I hadn't decorated in about 20 yrs and was so happy I did last year with many homemade ornaments, it was so much more special. Thanks for sharing your talent with us.
My grandma in North Holland made these when I was small. Never knew how as she died when I was 8 and I never got to know. Thank you for the clear demo, love from Auckland New Zealand
Of all the tutorials I've watched trying to learn how to make these. I found this one to be the best. Thanks so much for being so detailed in your tutorial.
Thank you for your kind words! I appreciate it.
Polish traditional folk decoration, used to decorate counrty houses. Star is a part of complex structure called" pająk".Later star was adapted as a christmas tree decoratin. Thanks for reminding me how to make this - Dziękuję.
@OuiOuiMonsieur I found that they really ended up looking like store made ornaments, I was happy with the results. Thanks for watching
That's the best tutorial ever! you explain things very well, and have a nice pace. The star is just beautiful. I'm going to make a bunch this year. Thank you so very much!!
@hangfrau The circular paper cutter would save loads of time! thanks for watching!
Thank you so much for your time to teach this craft. I will love seeing them on my tree, and will think of you fondly for your gift.
That is the coolest ornament I have ever seen !!!! I loved the part where you pulled on the cording and it pulled it all together..... soooo satisfying !!!!
I will make one for my Polish grandparents! It was very easy to understand your instructions.
We had a couple of these on our tree when I was a kid ( I'm a young 53), only ours had been dipped in wax to preserve them from year to year! They may have been my great grandmother's. Long gone now, but I always loved them! Guess what I'm making this year??? Hope I have the magic gene for this, lol. Thanks so much.
So grateful for this tutorial. I saw these on a tree at our library & thought they looked like sea urchins...perfect for my FL themed tree.I watched the followup video about the Pagoda house ornament--now I'll go visit your blog!
Glad you found the video useful :) Thanks for watching and leaving me a kind comment.
Those ornaments are beautiful Tammy. Thanks for showing us how to make them. Hugs!
The gold paper was bought as part of a scrapbooking package at the dollar store, it had a few sheets of this plus some coordinating paper. It had the texture of thick wrapping paper.
Excellent how to video - thank you!!
@Ilovethemountains09 You would just have to scale the center circle down to match the size of the larger circle. It just has to be big enough to hold the pieces together when you cinch them together at the end. You may have to experiment to get the right size
I plan on making ornaments for this years tree....Going to have a bunch of these. Thanks for the wonderful instructions!
I love this. You made it look so easy. I would have never figured it out with your seeing your video. Thank you for sharing your talent.
I love this, how pretty that turns out,I admit I was thinking ,well how is that a ball, and was most surprised that pulling it tight made it into the perfect round shape.Thank you for sharing .
@atticus9799 Hello Noreen! Welcome to my channel I'm glad you found it. I'm always happy to get a new person that leaves me interesting comments.
I'm making more of these to give away as ornaments, I think people will really like them.
I made these polish stars for my shop window. They were a hit!! I gave some away to customers.
Thank you for your video. It was very easy to follow.
Glad you enjoyed them! Thanks for letting me know :0

Thanks again,

Wow thats amazing. I love it. Cant wait to make lots of them with my 4 year old. She can help me with the glitter part. Thank you for sharing. God bless you.
Thank you SOOO much for posting this! I found some gorgeous "urchin" ornaments on Etsy but about dropped on my bum when I saw the price. So I am really, really happy to make these with your instructions. I can't thank you enough for saving me some hard earned cash this Christmas!
The Craftylicious One is at it again! What a cute ornament. I've seen these before never knew what they were called : )
@unAnnaNinja These are great for decorating a room with. You are only limited by the paper you can find and as you know there are so many lovely choices out there
Great tutorial! I had made these in grade school and had never known the name or found the instructions. Will be fun to make with family. Thank you.
@mysteryglo Thicker paper makes them more durable and the paper will withstand the folding and curling without tearing or the colour coming off (like with some cheaper wrapping paper). Cardstock would probably be too thick and too hard to fold properly.
Great instructional video! I made about 8 of these a couple years ago. Was thinking about making more this year. Couldn't remember where I had learned how to make these. Sure enough, found your video again. Thanks!
+l lb Glad you found me again :) Thanks for watching
This is a really well done video! One of my piano student's dad made me one a few years ago and it always gets nice comments from my guests. I think I"ll give it a try!
Awesome!!!! My family's gonna go NUTS with these! We try to make a number of homemade decorations every year and these are really really beautiful! Thank you SO much! I am facebooking this for sure!
brilliant video, very clear, and you made it visually easy to see how things were done too. You mentioned that the twine/string frayed easily. If you paint a little clear nail varnish/nail polish on the end of the string and let it dry it wont fray making it easier to thread the needle.
Thank you for your kind words about my video and for the great tip about the fraying string!
@DaCrazyOne25 It is hard on the fingers, that's true. I use a fantastic white craft glue that I use for quilling that dries SUPER fast, I buy it from quillingsuperstore with a dot and a com. The tacky glue would be better. It also depends on the paper, I used hot glue for the very shiny/plasticky silver paper one (this also hurts the fingers).
You can use any kind of paper you want as long as it takes a crease well and is thick enough to be durable.
Awesome! I remember making these in camp as a little girl and I loved them then. I tried to remember how to make them last year when I wanted to make my own ornatments for our little tree, but couldn't remember how to, just couldn't get it. I didn't know what they were called so I couldn't find how to make them.. I found you accidently, and I'm so glad I did....Now I can make these again. I have subscribed....maybe you can teach me some more. Thank you.
Thank you so much sharing. These ornaments are so beautiful.
I'm from Poland and I've never seen those kind of stars but I.... love it.
@tweetnes I used my quilling glue, that dries nice and quick. I did use hot glue for the silver shiny ornament, it can be a little messy, but it works.
That is so cool!!!!!!! I am definitely going to make some of those for my tree. Will try and put a little video together for you. Thanks Tammy.
These are beautiful! Thanks so much for sharing ❤️. I made these in elementary school in the 70’s but forgot how to make them. I’m so glad to have found your video! Merry Christmas from 🇨🇦
@ilovstodance You need paper that is fairly stiff, but not too stiff. That's why scrapbooking paper is good, but you are right, it can be expensive. Plain old printer paper works well too and it comes in different colour. Our dollar store has a lot of cheap scrapbooking stuff in it. Gift wrapping paper can be very good if it is thick enough. I tried it with cheap Christmas paper and it didn't work well.
Thanks you for such a quick and well spoken tutorial! Beautiful!
wow. amazing! and every step is beautiful and you can even find ways to use the "simple"stars
Absolutely gorgeous!! I’m making it a class project!! ❤️❤️🌟🌟
Your stars look fantastic and I'm amazed by how good you are at making this things! Your every move is so precise, you must have made hundreds of them : ) Thank you so much for sharing!
@Autumngirl24 Thanks for watching!
My favorite tutorial yet! These are cheap by price, but end up looking pretty expensive!
they look awesome.. i'm not polish but this is something i could do on the cheap to decorate my tree... very clever
I made one today, it took some time but came out great. Only thing I had a little trouble with is doing the knot at the end, when you tie it the strands get tangled and loosen again. Also I used a bead instead of sequins and if the hole is too large it comes undone again, so I looped the cord through the bead twice. But I enjoyed making it and it looks lovely, thanks!
Very innovative, my sis-in-law is polish so i will try to make some of these for her hopefully she'll like them i think they're so cute, so thankyou for sharing
Tammy I love these and cannot wait to get to Michaels and get the stuff to make some. Thanks so much for sharing this, I need to make some gifts for friends and family that don't cost a lot and I think this is a wonderful gift idea.
Thanks for this tutorial! I found another one online, but yours is so much easier to follow. I can't wait to try this again, hopefully with better results!
Thanks for sharing all of your talents. I can't wait to make these. Again, thanks for all of your help:)
Hello I had been making polish stars for years thank you so much for your tutorial God bless you

+Tourmaline_ Ivy Glad you enjoyed the video :)
hermosísimo trabajo. sencillo y muy especial.gracias por compartir con nosotros, los amantes de la navidad.
Reminds me of my childhood. I live in the Netherlands and we made them at school all the time.
Loved this!!!!!!!! You are very good in describing how to do this.
Thanks!
These are beautiful Tammy! I'm going to give this a try for sure! Thanks for another wonderful project! Hugs!

Thank you for this tutorial. These stars are so pretty!
Thanks for watching!
Tammy I did one & it looks pretty good. It took a few times to get the roll on the pencil part but I got it. Oh I had tacky glue. It works great TY for sharing this. I will try more =)
I will show mine on my next video
BIG HUGS
Thank you so much for this video--we don't have any Christmas decorations since we relocated and had to be rid of them. I look forward to making these inexpensively with my daughter!
My mother use to make really large ones very similar to these out of foil wrapping paper. I imagine you might have to make more circles. Nice job and well made tutorial.
Oh my goodness is this ever an awesome tutorial and christmas craft. Thank you so much for posting your video, I can't wait to try this out. :)
how fun, think I'll try to make some. Scrapbooking paper is such a good idea.
Amazing! It's a much simpler concept than the finished product would have you believe.
So cute! Probably going to make these for Christmas this year.
Just recently found your channel and I LOVE IT! Thanks! I love this ornament. Sitting here at my desk at work, whiling away a Friday afternoon, giving this a try. Easy and pretty. Can't wait to get home and show it to my girls and make a few for package decorations! Keep it up. Noreen
lovely! Lol I'm from Poland, but never heard about Polish stars, good to learn sth new! Happy Season :)
@TheShmoo123 I ran across these on the internet when I was doing a search for paper Christmas ornaments, I had never seen them before. They were fun to make.
Thanks for this! The instructions were very simple to follow.
Wow! It's so easy and it looks beautiful!
It's a good idea to use the pencil for a really tight point. I've watched other videos that don't use the pencil but your star is the best!!!!!
I'm in love with these ornaments and you're just the nicest person! ^^ thanks for sharing!
It took all night to make my first one. It looks awesome! I used glitter wrapping paper... I would not recommend using that. It would have taken way less time if I had just added the glitter later. Thanks, my husband and I will be the talk of the ornament exchange!
@Ultimatecruegirl Scrapbook paper is perfect for this because is it nice quality and folds well.
@thenorsugirl You are welcome! Thanks for watching
Hey Tammy! Wow, those are BEAUTIFUL! I don't know if I'd have the patience to even complete one of them, let alone enough for a whole set of them! wow~ lol
I hope you're having a great Wednesday!
