    Looking at your distortion test chart it looks to me as though the left hand side of the image is sharper than the right. Is it possible that your version of this lens is de-centred to some degree?

  • @Imhotep397
    @Imhotep397 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Looking good. I kind of wish you could test speedboosters/focal reducers with these kinds of lens comparisons to see
    If they make a difference in sharpness/aberration when taking a full frame lens and putting it on an APSc. Maybe one day.

  • @lauriehwrdlh
    @lauriehwrdlh 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Is it the adaptor giving the poor corner quality on the M3 or genuinely the lens? I don't see how corner sharpness on a crop sensor would be that much worse than the FF? Would be interested to see a chart sample image from an apsc dslr without the adaptor being needed. Anywho, great review vid as always 😊

    • @nicdorman3826
      @nicdorman3826 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The adaptor is just a spacer with electric contacts. I doubt there would be much difference between mirrorless and dslr apsc's. (subjectively I havent noticed any difference between my 70D and my M5 )

    • @ShadowPony064
      @ShadowPony064 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      APSC sensors have a much higher pixel density, so any present optical defects will be magnified and something that wasn't visible on an FF sensor will have it's presence made known on APSC. What this result tells us is that the lens does present sharpness falloff quite quickly but it requires an APSC sensor to identify it. Unless you're putting it on a 5DSR, you'll be fine on FF.

    • @CzornyLisek
      @CzornyLisek 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's complicated. On every different model of sensor(and all surroundings, in build filters ect. ect.), results will be different. That's reason why for example DxOmark test lens on all cameras they can.
      Or in another words. Full frame vs crop isn't the reason. Reason is it's different camera. And with each camera model results will be different.

    • @christopherfrost
      @christopherfrost  7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      It's not the adaptor. It's the pixel density of the APS-C camera which is far, far more challenging for the lens

  • @smaakjeks

    What a nifty lens! Had never heard of it. Great find, and review (as always)!

    Hi Chris, great review! I am really interested in this lens, but I need focus confirmation for my Canon FF's. Do you think it would be possible to buy a Pentax or Nikon version of this lens and then purchase a Nikon to Canon chipped adapter to achieve focus confirmation?

    Wondering how this would go on a Micro 4/3 (Lumix) sensor for video work? Not as concerned about sharpness so much as chromatic aberration. I understand the issue of pixel density on smaller sensors but I think M43 have smaller resolutions than most FF or APSC sensors? Great video as always

    • @aimeecute4216

      I have this lens. It works very well on FF, but not on M43,,, actually most FF lenses don't work well on m43,,u had,better stick to native lens

    I freaked when i see all that chrome on the back part of the lens mount. I am not surprised of to see the red cast at wide aperture. It is probably flare inside the camera from the chrome of the back of the lens. i see that all the time when you mount a lens on a cheap adapter with no flare blocking method inside or chrome or glossy black paint inside.

  • @InterMaus
    @InterMaus 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    You use manual focus lenses quite often. I'm interested in knowing which way do you achieve focus with them? Using live view only or relying on your eyesight?
    (I wear glasses so usually it's a bit harder for me to eyeball it, but luckliy my Nikon does have an in-viewfinder focus assist, i don't know if Canons have this as well.)

    Great review. Chinese and Korean manual lens manufacturers produce constantly many new useful and affordable prime lenses for those who can not spent thousands of dollars and aren't lazy with manual focus. Japanese have conquered the world of photography with their lenses for a long time, now it's the time of Chinese and Koreans to take advantage of the manual focus aids of latest mirrorless cameras.
    Indeed the lens looks like a bright Zeiss ZM M-mount lens. I like that the de-click can be selected without a tool as it is common with other lenses. At f/1.2 the corners are not very soft and that is very good for the price of the lens. Of course such a lens will be nearly always used at f/1.2. Otherwise there are cheaper and better options.

    If you're putting this lens next to a Samyang 35mm 1.4 for nikon (fullframe). Which one comes out better considering build quality and optics? And size? Or are they the same size ish?

    Got this at a bargain price for $200 and its so much to shoot with. Its MF and quite a challenge but the f1.2 makes it possible to use at anytime of the day. I would say tho that its strength lies in it its video capabilities.

    I had one but returned it. Very heavy and almost impossible to focus at f/1.2, not very sharp at f/1.2 either. Just get the Sigma 35 1.4 Art. Much better and usable wide open.

    • @CzornyLisek
      @CzornyLisek 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      People were focusing manual lenses by eye from 1800. Just learn to do it.
      And things like Otus, Art, G were designed to be fast and very very sharp. But generally things like this lens, Leica Noctillus, Voighlander Nokton are design to be rather soft lens but very fast. Also designing sharp F1,4 lens is very hard, 1.2 is almost impossible with "normal price", 1.0 no fck way, making F1 usable is already HUGE achievement. Or in another words the faster lens is the more difficult(exponentially) it is to design and manufacture lens.

      Manual doesn't have all kings of PCB, motors, gears ect. that take ~50% of body. so they can be very small by modern standards(by old standards it's huge lens).

  • @AcidTripwire
    @AcidTripwire 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Another cool, odd little lens from some obscure Chinese company. Put this one in the 'artistic' pile. I don't see any use for an f1.2 lens that becomes sharp at f5.6. I'm sure the t-stop is dreadful as well. I just don't understand putting oddball lenses on expensive, high tech cameras!

    • @AcidTripwire
      @AcidTripwire 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Godfrey Jemand That's why I mentioned the t stop. Like another Chinese lens, the Mitakon f/0.95 Speedmaster, that actually has a t stop of 1.4... I'm sure this thing isn't letting in t/1.2. Plus standard viewfinders are only capable of transmitting something like f/2.5-3.5 so everything below that is wasted. Even precision focusing screens optimized for fast lenses will only get you down to f/1.8.
