  • Shipwright Louis Sauzedde continues his work fixing a leak on a historic Herreshoff 12 1/2 daysailer named 'Rhode Island Red' from Bristol, Rhode Island. In part 4, Lou demonstrates how he used a pattern to create the replacement piece and then how to steam bend the new piece using a plastic bag.

One fantastic craftsman that any young lad would be lucky to serve his time with.

I found this repair as was searching for ways to bend wood. Part 4 was saved in a pinterest page of many wood items that were bent. I found the repair very interesting and I watched from part 4 to the end of the repair. I don't know the name of the shipwright, but he's very talented at what he does.

Love working with wood, but you know when the day comes, and this man passes, the boat world will have lost not only a good man,but knowledge that can’t be replaced! Enjoy watching you work and explaining as you go. Also, your tools will be looked at by people and say, reckon what that was used for! Outstanding job!

the amazing thing is that this guy finds time to do the job and to film and edit everything. I cannot do anyone of the two.

When I was a freshman at Casa Roble High School in Orangevale California we use to soak wood in water and make Re-curve Bows for hunting in our wood shop class, this reminds me a lot of that. Thanks for sharing your wonderful skills with all of us.
Best wishes n Blessings. Keith Noneya

Very nicely done. I'm not even into boats I was just looking up different techniques for steam bending. This video is excellent. Articulate, concise and very informative.
    Thanks for sharing! :)

Great Videos! I love the voice/slang. Could listen to it all day! And it's great that you explain how you get to certain things instead of skipping small steps that might be obvious to you!

GENIUS! This will work so much better than a boil bath for my thin wood project!

This is an awesome technique! It looks so much better than what I have used in the past with a steam box. I would be interested in how much it springs back after removing the clamps; I have always had a hard time making bucks to anticipate that.

Glad I ran across this, I'm restoring a 1923 Old Town canoe which I need to match the bend of the gunwale curve as well as this model has a bend upward connecting the decking. What I'd like to know is what thickness poly bag are you using. Thanks

HI Louis, my 1958 keel has a soft spot, right where it meets the first plank..i know my skills even with all your good tutorial is no where near capable to do this job. my handy work has been with tar and hemp which held off the water intake from the hull for a season or two, another issue with the propeller and gear box had her out of the water for over a season and now after pulling her 6 tons in and out of the water a few times she still takes in water.i have been soaking salty rags and refilled the problem area with a product called tec 7 and put a copper facing over the area.. i have this sinking feeling that my boat is going to be a sinking mess, she is in the Oslo fjord -i have tried the heritage marine society i have had no luck finding a do able affordable solution...I am more than willing to share my boat if you know someone like yourself in this part of the world..rather that than burn and sink her, 30ft Snekke Dorry Pls let me know if u get any ideas on my behalf, all the best from another wooden boat lover.

Well, damn. I came here by accident (phrasing), but this was a great video. More people should be learning how to do this type of thing. I wish I picked this up in school as an elective. It wasn't offered as one, but it sure would have been neat if it were.
