What is a Fraction?
Fractions represent a parts of a whole.
When we divide a whole into equal parts, each part is a fraction.
Fraction are used to represent quantities less than 1.
Fraction notation:
Fraction has two parts.
The number on the top of the line is called the numerator.
The number below the line is called the denominator.
Numerator:
how many parts we have.
Denominator:
how many equal parts is the whole divided into.
TYPES of Fractions:
1.Unit fraction:
A Fraction which has 1 as the numerator is called a unit fraction.
2.Proper Fraction:
A fraction where the numerator is less than the denominator, then it is known as a proper fraction.
3.Improper Fraction:
A fraction where the numerator is greater than the denominator, then it is known as an improper fraction.
4.Mixed Fraction:
A mixed fraction is the combination of a natural number and fraction. It is basically an improper fraction.
5.Like Fractions:
The fractions which have the same denominators are called like fractions.
6.Unlike Fractions:
The fractions which have unequal denominators or different denominators are called, unlike fractions.
