ive listened to this album almost everyday this year. it has become my favorite album of all time and i think it is genuinely so so good i personally can listen to it anywhere. its just so good
There's other bands similar, forming the void, ultraspank, and many many others , almost doesn't make it unique anymore because so many younger people influenced by today ,
Well this was a welcome surprise!! Fear Inoculum has been in my car since it was released! I think it's one of their best albums! Pneuma, Invincible and Descending are some of my all time favourite tracks from them!!
Funny enough Danny Carey in an interview has stated that this album was meant to be this 80-minute long song to begin with, so that viewpoint is probably what the band most like expected people to get out of this. Either way, I was wondering why I didn't see a lot of Tool being discussed on this channel, so I welcome this with open arms, especially for a phenomenal album like this one.
Tool - Fear Inoculum is my favourite album of the 2010’s. It’s incredible! Also, Fear Inoculum has even surpassed Lateralus as my favourite Tool album.
This album blew away all expectations I had. I’ve been a tool fan since undertow and wasn’t sure what to expect after a 13 year break but was completely blown away. The thing that really got me was the complex poly meters/ poly rhythms that managed to have a ton of groove. The lyrical themes were also really poignant for today’s fearful society. Interesting note seven was the numerical theme so there are 7 main tracks and they use 7 based time signatures throughout the album.
Fear Inoculum is a masterpiece. It takes a few listens to truly grasp everything that's going on but once you do you can't put it down. And I agree that you can't just pick a song or 2 from it and move on. It's something to be enjoyed in whole. The little fillers could be done without but each song has something to offer that the others don't. And since they flow so seamlessly together it only makes sense to pop it in and let it ride. Great review, Pete!
The album is very good. 7empest is my favorite song off the album. Amazing song that flows so well for all 15 mins. Hopefully we can get Tool ranking the albums video.
Was never a Tool fan until I heard this, because of all the hype I gave it a listen, and I am really glad I did. So unlike anything I ever heard before. It's to me one of those albums the more you listen to it the more you want to listen to it. If that makes any sense.
I've been a Tool die hard for years and years and this was honestly kind of a disappointing effort for me considering the amount of time it took to drop. I'm still glad that you found a gateway to Tool though. If I had a gun to my head I might say Undertow is my all time Tool fave because it's just such a raw rock record but I adore everything about them.
Tool is one of my favorite bands, very glad to see them profiled on your channel Pete, and a highly accurate description of the music on this album. Spot on with the strong 4/5. One thing I would add is how prophetic the lyrics are and the timing of this release. Released roughly 6 months before the pandemic, but go back and look at the lyrics and see how many words we’ve been hearing and seeing the last number of weeks. I liked Maynard’s performance when this came out, but I think we’ll need to look back on this as an A+ moment in terms of a lyricist not just writing great words, but a remarkable depiction of the current climate. A beautiful yet terrifying coincidence or Maynard doing his homework before any of us had the chance to on this pandemic? I don’t know but it’s worth pointing out. Thanks for all the content, Pete.
For the longest time was never into them apart from a few songs on Lateralus, but them i started to like some songs on 10,ooo days, so after hearing the titled song and thinking this is up my street, thought id give the album a spin, its not only the best album of last year, but now its my favourite album of the decade.
Fantastic album that hasn't left my CD turntable since its release. I agree that it's meant to be taken as a whole, a musical journey so to speak. Much like the Alex Grey artwork that accompanies the packaging, it's a surreal and sometimes nightmarish trip. Tool keeps getting better and better.
Yes! He's finally talking about Tool. Please rank their albums, I know there's only a handful, but each one is packed with material. If not, at least do a top ten song list by them.

Amazing record. If you are a Tool fan then you probably like the record even if it’s not your favorite Tool release. It’s not my favorite but I’ve enjoyed it. Tool is one of those bands where I can easily slide down a rabbit hole and listen to all of their CDs. If you take all their music as a whole they are an amazing band. Thanks for getting to this one.
Loved the new album. Was supposed to see them live last week but the gig was cancelled cause of the virus. Hopefully it will be rescheduled. Haven't seen them live since the tour for 10,000 Days.
Songs like Pneuma, Invincible & Descending start off slow then build so I feel like they do have a particular structure. It's one of those albums you've got to listen to more than once as where 10,000 Days, Lateralus, Undertow & Aenima I loved right when I first heard them!
Musically this album is a masterpiece. 4 experts with their instruments seamlessly melding together. They're not as angry as they use to be but I'm a fan forever
Fear Inoculum is a masterpiece, in my opinion. In the past 11 months I have listened to this album at least once a week or more and I can never skip a track (specifically on the CD version). Nearly 20 years ago, no album had ever made me feel the way Lateralus did. Fast forward 20 years and no album has ever made me feel the way Fear Inoculum makes me feel.
I've been listening to this since it came out. That's a tell tale sign in of itself. I'm still listening. I'm finding that the music is starting to pay dividends. It's an excellent album.
My favourite album from the 2010`s Is The Wake from VOIVOD. I`m a Huge Tool fan, Have seen them twice in Portugal in 2006, and I thought that 10.000 days was very good, but not so good as Lateralus. I would like to have a Remastered version of Aenima, wich may be their pinnacle, to hear their instruments more detailed. Descending and Invincible are very great songs indeed
At last a mention of the best band on the planet. I read the review on your website which was fair but didn’t think you would do anything on video. This isn’t Tool’s best album but I have slowly become obsessed with it. The latest version of the CD version is better than the digital one as it does away with the infill tracks that are just nonsense. I have played it constantly and have yet to become tired of it. A masterpiece that was worth the wait. One footnote: they have unashamedly lifted the opening riff of 7empest straight from King Crimson’s ‘Frame by Frame.’
Great album but the price tag on it is/was outrageous. Its still just 1 disc! Plus you didn't get those extra instrumental intros/interludes on the cd. I've only bought the digital release from Apple music so far. Thanks for the review, Pete. Its definitely worth 4/5 stars.
pete off the subject was playing vinyl of genesis trespass and noticed on side 1 there is 3 songs on that side and all songs 7.00 minutes long exactly weird keep up the great work!!!!!
I really hated Tool. This album is so different from the likes of Undertow and Lateralus, that I feel in love with it. The thing I love the most about Fear Inoculum is the fact that every song takes its time to develop, has a very visible buildup, climax, and fadeout. Every track sounds different from the rest, and yet they flow perfectly. Descending is my absolute favourite song from this album. Masterpiece.
I obsessed over Tool during the Lateralus days, I love Aenima, and liked Undertow. I even have the EP. When 10,000 Days came out, I was very underwhelmed. I appreciated what they were doing, but couldn't get into it, bar two or three tracks. So, I was hoping for a return to form with Fear Inoculum. It's like a half-way point between Lateralus and 10,000 Days. So, It's appreciated a bit more, but still haven't listened to it for months now.

I noticed the brief shot of that Roxy Music CD, Pete...……………………….how about a Roxy Music album ranking?
That’s pretty cool. I’ve never seen the packaging. I took this album for what it was; a present to longtime fans waiting years and years for any new music. For me is a nice addition to their catalogue but it’s not going to take over any of the other records. I do hope that this is a move to release more music in the upcoming years. I heard that they might be releasing an EP. So, hate to say it, but it is what it is.
Saw you hold up a great Roxy Music Album Stranded. Hopefully a rank the albums of Roxy coming up. Have the whole catalog love Roxy. Not a big Tool fan will give it a listen.
People wanted the aggression of undertow blended with Lateralus and they got Fear Inoculum. Needless to say some people were let down, I enjoy the album for what it is, Ænima will always be my favorite personally but I think this is a great addition to the discography and I’ve been enjoying it the past 8months. People are 100% entitled to their opinion I just personally don’t understand some of the criticisms I’ve seen. Not saying it has to be everyone’s new favorite tool album but I feel like some of the complaints for this album just sound like people grasping at straws to explain and justify their disappointment in the album. Like calling the album “elevator music”. I can’t fathom how 7empest, can be seen as elevator music, or when invincible kicks in with that heavy ass riff, or descending (ONE DRIVE TO STAY ALIVE!!) sure the intros aren’t POW in your face but the build up in theses songs works in my opinion. But like I said before everyone is entitled to their opinion I just feel bad for the people who haven’t been enjoying the album
The album is nowhere near as aggressive as Undertow and I never expected it to be. Since a lot of Tool fans are old now they probably don't mind that the album scaled the aggression back and didn't mind chilling out to some calmer more cerebral material, much of Lateralus and 10,000 Days was like that anyway, and that stuff is good. But it's also not up to par with Lateralus instrumentally or vocally. I just think this album doesn't have the same allure to it. The songs are long and jammy but with less hooks and less bite to it. It's not bad but nowhere near their best. Maybe it needs more listens but after 13 years I can understand some fans being disappointed. 7empest is actually my least favorite. Pneuma and Invincible were the best cuts for me.
John Hamm 7empest has actually grown one me more the past 8months. It wasn’t an instant click for me it as I listen to it more I’ve found myself coming back to it, invincible was probably the first to reel me in, that riff after the synth section is heavy af and I think the whole song is great, descending is starting to really work it’s way up to my favorite. The title track is good and I like pneuma but I hear a lot of people saying it’s their favorite on the album and I don’t personally think it’s the best but it’s not bad forsure, culling voices has been the one I go for the least and I find CCT pretty entertaining too and I’ll usually go ahead and put that on if I skip straight to 7empest cuz it’s right before it anyway. But anyway it has not climbed up my list to my #1 tool album but I’ve been enjoying the hell out of it.
I’m pretty sure someone else already said this- I like the cd version of the album over the digital album format. The soundscape tracks don’t really work for me. I think “invincible” is my favorite....when this album first came out- it was a bitch to find on cd.
I can’t think of too many albums that required so many listens to fully absorb. The complexity and breadth of the music is staggering. This maybe a work of genius but a lot of listeners might be turned off by the amount of time and patience involved in fully appreciating it. I thought it merely mediocre for the first several listens because it wasn’t the Tool I was expecting.
Very good album, great packaging (a bit expensive though). I want to ask you if you're a fan of the Dream Syndicate and have you listened to their latest release
I felt the same. It was just really repetitive and Maynard just felt totally distant in this album and it doesn't have nearly the amount of ambiguous lyrics to dissect for years and years that other Tool albums do.
I was underwhelmed. To me it was background music with incredible percussion. I much prefer Tool when they do songs vs soundscapes. Especially disappointing since the songs on 10,000 Days are so great, The Pot, Jambi, Vicarious, Rosetta Stoned.
@@SimpleManGuitars1973 10,000 Days is better. More melody, tighter song structures, more atmosphere. Fear sounds like long progressive pieces with less hooks, just drawn out instrumental jams compared to their past albums.
Saw them at the Prudential Center last year...great fucking band...last time was i guess 13 yrs ago Nassau Collesium...and Yes the Danny Carey webcam yt is great...not to much pro-shot of live Tool at all
It seems like great music for the subconscious and that's how I enjoy it - I put it on as background while I'm working. I couldn't see myself going to a Tool concert though - just too abstract and not anthemic, wouldn't work for me live.
Hey pete. Thankyou that you sent my vid to jeff young. Thankyou. I have a question, do you have any tips on how to get in touch with a popilar person. Because i really want to send some stuff to john petrucci because i am going to record some dream theater stuff. So can you tell me how to send the vid or where i need to send it. If that makes any sense. Thankyou again.
I use to really love TOOL many years ago. Their first Opiate and Undertow and Aenima was incredibly powerful and unique. Very awesome albums. With Aenima being my personal favorite and in my opinion their pinnacle. I've tried to get into their other albums after Aenima. but found that they was all pretty boring. This newest album actually put me to sleep. In my opinion Tool is way past their heyday and now has resorted to making elevator music. But good video Pete.🙂
Couldn’t imagine listening to a song like 7empest and thinking it sounds like elevator music. Sounds like you lost interest 2minutes into each song and made your opinion of the album based on the song intros. Not saying it’s their best work or my favorite album from them but I think it’s far from “elevator music”
Is it Tools`s Tales From Topographic Oceans? Or I didn`t get it? Descending and Invincible are great, but Tempest starts with a "Frame by Frame" almost rip-off King Crimson style (man and that is my Crimson favourite era), and then a Whah whah riff that turns unto a heavy-grunge kind of "Undertow" style. So far it`s a mixed album for me...
It certainly is Tool's version of that album - I make that comparison too. Perhaps you didn't understand that album or this album either though because they're both fantastic even with their flaws 😆
Man dude Lateralus and 10,000 Days are phenomenal. Undertow is probably my favorite if you had a gun to my head though. It's just the most brutally raw and straight forward hard rock album they've ever made probably. I adore all their work though massively and was even in their fan club years ago.
Or maybe if you know any popular guitarist i could maybe dend you a link and you can send the vid to them. Because you really helped me. I tried to send some stuff to kiko from megadeth but it didnt work. But then when you sent it to jeff to was speechless you really helped me thankyou
One of my more prefered albums by them, but I'm not a Tool fan by any means so it's about as boring and pretentious as I find most of their music to be. As much as I love and appreciate production and atmosphere it's songwriting that matters the most for me, and that's where I don't find Tool's music to be very compelling or exciting. 5/10.
Everyone was going crazy over 7empest and I just found it to be underwhelming. Many were calling it one of the best songs they've done and I just don't see it. Doesn't come close to many songs off Aenima or Lateralus. My favorites were Pnuema and Invincible. I can't lie though much of the material on this album felt like been there done that. And I still don't get much out of the title track. I liked the idea of stretching songs out and seeing what happens but most of these songs don't call for it. Not enough hooks or melody and Maynard didn't captivate me like he has on past albums.
Was pretty underwhelmed with this one, sounds and feels like a Danny Carey/Adam Jones jam album, not a horrible thing just kinda boring. In addition, it just feels like the Maynard contributions were phoned in/shoe horned into the songs. The album doesn’t suck, but I think I probably had unrealistic expectations as to what this was going to sound like after 13 years that’s all. PS: I'm not getting the Danny Carey compariosn Pete, no disrespect, just not seeing it. Met Danny once in LA after a Porcupine Tree show at the Wiltern, dude is scaaaaary tall (I'm only 5'8" so everyone is tall though). Reminded me of Lurch from the Addams Family but he was asuoer cool dude, no rock star BS at all !
Pete does seem to resemble Tool drummer Danny Carey. This album suffers from too much padding. At least one minute could be trimmed from each long song. The short segue pieces can be ignored as well as The Culling and CCT. I give it a 6/10.
I'm really surprised it is so well received. For me, I waited over ten years for a new tool album and got this? It's like they haven't had any new ideas in ten years. Same riffs rehashed over and over. The magic is gone. I think it's the worst Tool album, nothing new and not creative at all.
ive listened to this album almost everyday this year. it has become my favorite album of all time and i think it is genuinely so so good i personally can listen to it anywhere. its just so good

Absolutely. You nailed it.👍
We need a Tool ranking the albums video, last night I was actually listening to the album Lateralus, what an album man
Great review Pete! Have you ever considered a ranking the albums for Tool?
The tones on this Tool album shake your pineal gland...
Great album but the price tag on it is/was outrageous. Its still just 1 disc! Plus you didn't get those extra instrumental intros/interludes on the cd. I've only bought the digital release from Apple music so far. Thanks for the review, Pete. Its definitely worth 4/5 stars.
I love it, that and opeths latest were my 2 faves of last year.
pete off the subject was playing vinyl of genesis trespass and noticed on side 1 there is 3 songs on that side and all songs 7.00 minutes long exactly weird keep up the great work!!!!!
I believe he said that's coming soon.
Completely agree that it's an album statement. Astute, very fair review.
Great band.
Pneuma is an amazing track!!!!
Awesome!
Very good album! I like it
That’s pretty cool.
It’s no “Laturalus” that’s for sure, but I enjoy it :)
I have this CD and i love it but mine is not the video screen version. Mine is just the booklet version which may have a few less songs.
Brilliant album
Sick!
I’m pretty sure someone else already said this- I like the cd version of the album over the digital album format. The soundscape tracks don’t really work for me. I think “invincible” is my favorite....when this album first came out- it was a bitch to find on cd.
Great Band. You should rank the Tool's albums
That is so cool
I can’t think of too many albums that required so many listens to fully absorb. The complexity and breadth of the music is staggering. This maybe a work of genius but a lot of listeners might be turned off by the amount of time and patience involved in fully appreciating it. I thought it merely mediocre for the first several listens because it wasn’t the Tool I was expecting.
I love this album. Best album of 2019 and one of the best of the decade imo.
Does this mean there’s a top 10 Tool songs in the works, or rank the albums?
Very good album, great packaging (a bit expensive though).
I want to ask you if you're a fan of the Dream Syndicate and have you listened to their latest release
Have never heard them, no.
@golfito What's rude? I answered his question.
I like Tool a lot but I was disappointed with this album. It just seems like recurring themes from past albums.
I felt the same. It was just really repetitive and Maynard just felt totally distant in this album and it doesn't have nearly the amount of ambiguous lyrics to dissect for years and years that other Tool albums do.
Very disappointing. All these years later and no new ideas. Rehashed ideas and riffs they've done over and over.
@@shamitoson After 13 years I expected much more
I was underwhelmed. To me it was background music with incredible percussion. I much prefer Tool when they do songs vs soundscapes. Especially disappointing since the songs on 10,000 Days are so great, The Pot, Jambi, Vicarious, Rosetta Stoned.
10,000 Days was my favorite on 10,000 Days and Right In Two was my second favorite. I think 10,000 Days was considerably better than this album.
@@SimpleManGuitars1973 10,000 Days is better. More melody, tighter song structures, more atmosphere. Fear sounds like long progressive pieces with less hooks, just drawn out instrumental jams compared to their past albums.
Saw them at the Prudential Center last year...great fucking band...last time was i guess 13 yrs ago Nassau Collesium...and Yes the Danny Carey webcam yt is great...not to much pro-shot of live Tool at all
Now that you've mentioned it Pete, I can kinda see that Danny Carey resemblence. :D
Finally bought it last month... Tool fan since early 90s, seen them 4 times live. Afraid to listen apparently 🙃
I’d put it right under Aenima and Lateralus
P.S you do kind of look like Danny Carey lol
It seems like great music for the subconscious and that's how I enjoy it - I put it on as background while I'm working. I couldn't see myself going to a Tool concert though - just too abstract and not anthemic, wouldn't work for me live.
I've seen them multiple times. Great live band.
It's just progressive rock/metal with an artful touch. I wouldn't call them that abstract.
Pete, I wanna hear you rank TOOL albums!!!
It's coming soon!
I don't, other than just trying to reach out to them via Facebook, tagging them on a post, or posting a link to your YT page on one of their videos.
@@seaoftranquilityprog ok ill try that. Maybe that will work. Its worth trying. Btw nice review i like tool
Weird, just listened to this today.
You found Lateralus boring??? I’m speechless.
A little but that was truly their last verygood album. 🙂
@@pyramidhead3109 You may be right, but a song like Eulogy is 10.000 times better than Tempest
Tangerine Dream please
Trouble with that is they have 8 million albums lol! Would be cool if he did a 70s Virgin era run down for sure though !
I hope you redeemed that download code because someone could probably snag it (the code shows crystal clear)!
I already had the download copy from the record label last year.
@@seaoftranquilityprog gotcha, just wanted you to know
I really enjoy listening to their early work peaking with Aenima, which I consider their masterpiece album. But they kind lost me after that. . .
2:52 everyone around me are like, *stay away from this man, he has coronavirus*.
Wasnt a huge fan of this, especially after 13 years of wait.
I loved the new record. Even liked it more than 10,000 days.
@@newyork4311 I didn't like it more than 10,000 Days but Tempest and Pneuma are phenomenal.
TOOLOOT
I think they played it super safe with this album.. which is a shame because 10,000 Days was such a different and interesting record.
Pete does seem to resemble Tool drummer Danny Carey. This album suffers from too much padding. At least one minute could be trimmed from each long song. The short segue pieces can be ignored as well as The Culling and CCT. I give it a 6/10.
I lost interest in them after AEnima.
I'm really surprised it is so well received. For me, I waited over ten years for a new tool album and got this? It's like they haven't had any new ideas in ten years. Same riffs rehashed over and over. The magic is gone. I think it's the worst Tool album, nothing new and not creative at all.
