The Desert of the Knaaren is the perfect setting for a horror movie or a dark arc of an animated series (Western or Anime, I'm cool with whatever). It has a skeleton graveyard over a volcanic wasteland, the inside harbours dark mazes filled with chaotic turns at every turn, the main characters are constantly hounded by an underground tribe of cannibalistic orcs, that are considered indestructible, who roar and snarl about how they will kill you.
This zone made me quit the game for a year or so as a kid it just scared the absolute shit out of me. Was so tonally different from the rest of the game. I mean 3:18, Jesus christ talk about 0 to 100, that music, that roar, instant terrifying invincible enemy bearing down on you in a confined space.
In the German version they say (translated into english): -"My (implying penis) is bigger than yours." -"Yes, maybe. But my is longer than yours. I can even touch my nose with it." -"Can you please stop talking about things like these..?"
One green jewel is missed in the video. At 30:25, first kill all the enemies before opening the cage. Then you will get a green jewel instead of the green tin perk or whatever it's called.
32:40 In the HD version using your route (7600 points combo), I can only gather 83%. By picking up only one more red jewel before the green jewel, I was able to rack up around 10k for this zone

So why didn't Otto just call Romeo and Gonzo to his office when he failed to get Andre out the first time in Clearleaf Forrest? They're shown to have the ability to teleport as seen in Longest Shortcut. Seriously they would have gotten Andre out much sooner if they just did that instead of pointlessly sending you to Land Of The Livid Dead and Desert Of The Knarren (not to mention the accident of landing in Bog Of Murk)

So in 2003 i got this Rayman game and i loved it , until this part. Man this scared me so much. was stuck at this exact place a good 15 minutes before making my move, i froze man. I somehow made it all the way to the zombie chicken section. And that made stop playing this game for about 1,5 years. I had nightmares and all. I had to Ask my friend to help me complete it. Damn i still don't get how this was approved for a childrens game. But it isn't something bad, probably because of this moment it made this my Favorite game of all time. Ain't no way this is going to be beaten, i love it.
Early child friendly 3D platformers could get away with being edgy, if they got away with all the dark aspects of Rayman 2 then they definitely could get away with this.

I was terrified of this part of the game when I was younger. The knaarens gave me so much anxiety.
