I recently purchased an engineer's scale from ebay and I love it. I trained as a carpenter and woodworker and I hate having to deal with fractions on a calculator. Mostly I just memorized the decimal equivalents to fractions. I thought to myself, why can't a foot be divided into 10 rather than twelve? So "I searched the world over and finally found..." the Engineer's ruler. I use it all the time when I do remodeling, especially when I need to divide a space into however many sections it needs to be divided into. I have always wondered why the foot is divided into twelve and then inches are halved then quartered and on and on... the counting system has been based on ten since Roman times, at least, so why have we been dividing by twelve? Maybe it was those six fingered giants in Egyptian times that gave us the measuring system. Don't even get me started on clocks!

Haha I hear ya! Tenths is much easier and no fractions involved. If I'm doing home repairs I usually measure in inches just because when I'm looking up materials or sizes of things online it's always in inches. But I use engineers scale at work every day. I've gotten the conversions down where I almost don't even need to think about it anymore. But that's because I work alongside carpenters who use inches so I constantly convert in my head when I'm giving them measurements.

Hey there! Thank you so much for this video! I’m a machinist and all we deal with is thousands. I was wondering if there was such a thing as a “1/10ths” tape measurer and I found your vid! Thanks again I’ll definitely be buying one. Video put together extremely well.

American version of the metric system…
    More people should use this…
I’m born and raised in America, and I work by myself and use metric tape measures

I've used metric before for work on certain jobs with international clients. I don't mind using it at all. If I'm at work generally I'm working in tenths but if I'm home I usually grab the inches tape measure. Not sure why.
