  • This 2-part film was originally titled, "From Philly To Canada" and was filmed in 1929 by an amateur cameraman named Ellwood F. Hoffman (1885-1966). He tracked his journey from Philadelphia, PA to Canadian border in this 2-hour long coverage of the trip. This travelogue is a great source for seeing what driving looked like in the 1920s.
Thanks to Prelinger Archive for making this footage available to the public. You can find other videos fro their archive on the Internet Archive.

Fewer cars on the roads, but seem like bad drivers. This was a great history lesson. Thanks

This is an awesome historical movie that was taken. Those concrete roads for those US highways was built very, very well! Here in Minnesota there are a few stretches of old US Highway 52 and US Highway 61 that were made of concrete in the mid 1920s that are still in great shape to this day! Although these roads were quite narrow and I wouldn’t recommend doing over 45 miles an hour on an old stretch if you find and choose to drive one.

@17:56 you see the US Highway 71 sign which indicates at this video was taken between 1926 and 1929 because the US highway system did not exist until 1926.

This is awesome. He's going from Philadelphia to Canada but by a route so westerly it takes him through Mansfield Ohio.I googled Mansfield Leland Hotel and that's it. Anyone know which state route he was taking ? I'm continuing to watch. Through Valparaiso IN and Chicago too. Dubuque then to South Dakota, Montana … eventually Banff, Lake Louise and Lake Agnes. The Summer before the Wall Street Crash.

Some wonderful footage, could benefit from a proper 2k or higher transfer. I recognize all the locations after 1:37:00, it's my backyard, Alberta and BC.

:) This must've been such an exciting trip. Some of the roads they drove looked pretty rough.
He seemed to be such a fun Dad. I liked when he filmed his wife & daughter.
I wonder if those 2 dogs that came out of the drainage pipe were strays? The one did have a collar on.
Thank you for posting this video. It was enjoyable to watch (except when he filmed while on horseback - it almost made me motion sick :)

It appears that the vehicle is driving a section of old US Highway 20 west of Rockford, Illinois through Dubuque.

He was driving a relatively new Franklin sedan, looks like a '27 or a '28. Very expensive car for the day, fine for driving up north as it was an air-cooled engine, but they didn't work well at all in the warmer climates down south! Very ambitious trip at that time, most people took the train if they were going that far.

At 24:42 you can plainly see they're driving a 1930 or 31 Franklin air cooled automobile. Air cooled like the Corvair, and volkswagen..... No pollution or safety garbage on that job. Built for fun.
