It is actually plexiglass, but glass may be easier to clean. :) They fly close to it and there have been one or two that have flown into the plexiglass, but the birds never acquire the speed hitting it that would cause them harm. The plexiglass gives a little , also. If they hit it once they never hit it again. They are smart.
This flight is a pretty easy one to build. And upkeep is simple! I always keep my birds inside to control the environment. That includes mosquitos! If you have interior room , please keep your gouldians indoors.
Hi James! Yes, my birds have figured out where the window is. When the chicks fledge sometimes they run into it, but no damage is done. They shake it off and never hit it again! I built a 2nd flight next to the one pictured, but I left off the windows. Mainly because the material tends to be expensive.
where did you buy your full spectrum light? are they bulbs or tubes? and is it like aquarium lighting? well maybe you should just tell me everything about the lighting if you dont mind ") i need some light for my birds but i have no idea where to begin. i love your cage and the birds i wish i could have a cage like it.
Hello j23- The lights are simple fixtures from Lowe's and the bulbs are the full spectrum/sunlight bulbs. The fixtures come with a bulb but toss it out. Indoor birds need light as close to sunlight as possible. Here is a link to a product that is helpful in vitamin D deficiency. Use that along with the sun bulbs and you are offering about the best you can without providing the sun. :)
@Ceriouss Hi! The light times vary throughout the year. In the resting season the light runs about 10-11 hours per day. During the breeding season it runs about 12-14 hrs per day. The change is gradual from season to season, and this helps bring the birds into breeding condition or into resting time It is never completely dark in there, but if it were the birds would definitely have a night light of sorts. There are feeding parents and there is a risk of injury if it is completely dark at night.
@camrocksursox Thank you! Yes the birds do love it, and they thank me with lots of babies! :) Since making this video I have added a 2nd flight right next to this one. I put the weaned youngsters in it.
Your birds will LOVE you for having a nice big flight to exercise in! Their health will greatly improve. Email me with your birdie baby questions and I'll try to assist you.
Wonderful! :D I was considering building an aviary for my finches, but what do you do with the constant flow of babies/chicks? o.O Perhaps a nearby pet store takes them? I'm very curious. xD
@barbsmorninggarden. I can't sign in to my old account anymore, maybe you'll see this. I had no problems until I introduced a pair of new male gouldians to the group. They turned out to be pretty rogue boys and they threw out two nests of chicks because they wanted the nests. I got rid of them, hand raised the chicks ( they are in another video) and once they were gone everything went back to normal.
If you have your birds on a proper health plan you really won't have to deal with medication. If any bird ever appears ill you remove him and put only that bird in a separate cage from the others. At that point you have to determine the best treatment for him. The idea of a proper health plan is to keep the birds in your flight happy and healthy! Email me if you are interested in some ideas for that. :> thanks!
hi, i have 2 couple goudian finch, they were hatching egg... in 1 case( 2 nest) when they have baby chick ....1 day after they through baby out off the nest... some one say: because 2 pair in one case...is it right? i dont see them care much about baby...? what do i have to do, to breed them, please tell me how... thank
I want to ask something. I have now a flight of 9 Goulds, no nests. I've been trying to put them in a separate cages, but unfortunately I haven't had luck with babies. Either eggs are infertile or parents do not brood. have You notice aggression in your flight when you have all of them in the same cage with many nest boxes? do you have babies? ( the gouldian of course ;o) ) is it better to have them your way or in a separate cages?
If your birds have been "seasoned" for cold weather ( gotten used to the cold or heat gradually) then they should be okay. I never had mine in the cold without warmth of some source. Just in case.
Oops, I hit send. Anyway- there was a lot of aggression in the flight and chicks were killed by rogue males wanting the nest box. I have much better success and control over breeding season when the birds are in 30X30x18 in breeding cages.
get a nest specialy for gouldians cose male ones sometimes throw their baby's out of the nest as yours did, so get a nest that have depth from the entrance so male ones can't throw the baby's out!
