Rope is actually sneakily good in this set. It has “equipped creature can’t be blocked by more than one creature” in a set that hands out Menace like it’s hot cakes through “Suspect”. So a creature with Rope and that’s Suspected is unblockable
It's fun to know equipment stats are just as silly as ever: "I'll give this regular squirrel (1/1) some rope (+1/+2) so it can defeat a bear or griffin (2/2) in combat. Heck, it could even take out a samurai (2/2) or a couple soldiers (1/1) and live to squeak about it!"
I would love to see a lot more indirect treasure hate like Vengeful Tracker to reigh in the power of treasures. Like, the incidental deck won't really care about losing like 2,4,6 life if they just use tokens "fairly" while players abusing Dockside Extornionist and similar cards have to work a bit harder to extract value from their treasures.
On the plus side, Hidden in plain sight gets ANY creature. Coco limits you to casting cost 3 or less. You cannot possibly whiff with Hidden in plain sight. It will always get you two 2/2's and might get you something hidden thats pretty crazy. But it also has the sorcery and much-much lower ceiling than Coco. I personally think its an interesting take on that type of card.
I am convinced that WoTC is actually depowering standard. When a rotation happens, the set will get depowered and make many cards too weak, acceptable.
11:53 Oh, Leering Onlooker also triggers those "when a card leaves your graveyard" effects. There are a few of those effects coming out in the this set.
Hidden in plain sight is kind of neat. Pick the best two dudes, give them ward until they lose summoning sickness, flip them over and swing. I’d maybe play it in Kadena
I feel like it's actually busted, you can be behind on board and take out a relevant target, get two man lands or one and a field of ruin/blast zone etc. Worst case you just ramp and now the next one will hit harder, which is also a wincon.
Does it matter that Rope makes suspected creatures unblockable? Probably not... but thought it was worth mentioning if we are already reviewing the card...
24:39 Yorion this thing.. imagine losing your guys, and then resetting the counters. Blink it and find out... that is all I'm saying. The only problem is running out of graveyard fodder.
Hidden in Plain Sight def isn't coco but it always hits, and I guess it gives you a 2 mana discount on your little cloaked dudes. and they didn't even have to be in your hand. At worst it turned a land into a 2/2. I wanna concoct a deck where it's a long drawn out draw spell.
Illicit Masquerade is the perfect example of why Farewell was a terribly designed magic card. There are so many neat spells out there that just can't really see play because of Farewell. The ability of a single card to both exile your board and your graveyard at one time makes Illicit Masquerade a 100% dead card out side of play-queue meme decks. That's a shame because that could be a fun deck to try and build.
Reenact the Crime. Just based on how many times I’ve seen Atraxa or Etali surveilled into the graveyard makes me want to play it. Dont even need to counter it a lot of the time to get it for 4.
I hope that the final day will show us cards from another dimension, that change the current standard mtg. Otherwise: "good luck getting to turn 3-4 while aggro red or red+green players laugh maniacally on turn 3-4 as they see their opponent count their lands with 1 - 3 life left"
I think he's really underestimating the card's power. It's basically a card that says "draw two creature cards" and already puts them in play for you, so when you do flip one or both over, you can already atack with them. So in a sense it's "draw 2 creature cards, they gain haste." But also it's just two bodies to block and survice, which draw normally doesn't do. Card Draw is about 2 cards for 3 mana. For one mana more this card draws two creatures (six deep) while still developing your board, even if you then do something else with your mana next turn, you'll have two 2/2 for four mana.
I believe if you cast Reenact with the cycle ability on the stack your copied Carnosaur can Discover 5 into Tishana’s Tidebinder which can stifle the 3 damage. They pay 3 mana to discard a card and do nothing. You pay 4 mana for an instant-speed 7/6 and 3/2. Question: Does the 7/6 have Trample or was it silenced by Tidebinder? (I am assuming the stifle works based on the gatherer ruling for Abandoned Sarcophagus)
All told I wish they were brave enough to cost disguise at 2 generic instead of 3. A 2 mana 2/2 with upside is a dime a dozen now adays and it's really hard to justify taking turn 3 off to set up an effect you need to spend mana on on another turn. Before the game got to today's level of power creep morph and megamorph were largely unused mechanics. Now that we're playing 2024 magic 3 mana still seems too much, even with the ward. A few of the best might see play but at 3 the time and effort spent on design is going to be largely wasted
Wrench became the final card in my one-syllable deck and that’s the highlight for me. Loving it

Yep. Made my comment before i saw yours. Great minds. 😊
Good tech
still 1 to get on the field, 3 to equip and have to suspect in the meantime. so much setup for unblockable that gets ruined by cheap removal.
Came here to say this.
You're a cool dude with a cool channel Dev. I'm glad TH-cam recommended you.
Hidden in plain sight is a coco that never misses
It's fun to know equipment stats are just as silly as ever:

Rope could be a limited sleeper with all the things that can be suspected(gain menace), since with rope equipped they would be unblockable.
I am convinced that WoTC is actually depowering standard. When a rotation happens, the set will get depowered and make many cards too weak, acceptable.
I hope you are right
I really hope you're right. Some of these cards would definitely be cool in a very powered down standard
Loving the new flash reanimator spell, Dev! 🔥👏
11:53 Oh, Leering Onlooker also triggers those "when a card leaves your graveyard" effects. There are a few of those effects coming out in the this set.
Hot take: The art for Slice from the Shadows is a better murder art than the art on Murder.
Do not respect that
The Cluedo references in this set are pretty amusing.
I mean they're doing a whole MTG version of the Clue board game...
MKM has some good stuff to upset Standard Format... great presentation Master Dev... always enjoyable spoilers from SBMTG
Ramp burn and mask thing look really fun to me, I'm liking this set too!
You Crack me up and I love the in depth analysis! Great job!
Hidden in plain sight is going to go in simic decks that blink the creatures. It's a good card in that context.
Hidden in plain sight is kind of neat. Pick the best two dudes, give them ward until they lose summoning sickness, flip them over and swing. I’d maybe play it in Kadena
I like how world rage is not basic lands this could be maybe good in historic gate decks.
I feel like it's actually busted, you can be behind on board and take out a relevant target, get two man lands or one and a field of ruin/blast zone etc. Worst case you just ramp and now the next one will hit harder, which is also a wincon.
Izzet has some of my favorite flavor texts, which is why I'm sad improbable explosion doesn't have any. Fun card though.
You're the best Dev. I love your work.
Thanks for the coverage ❤😊
24:26 Would be fun to use illicit masquerade with original ozolith
Does it matter that Rope makes suspected creatures unblockable?
Probably not... but thought it was worth mentioning if we are already reviewing the card...
The Chase is on might make its way into my Vadrik (Astral Archmage) deck. Copying a "draw" spell seems good.
24:39 Yorion this thing.. imagine losing your guys, and then resetting the counters. Blink it and find out... that is all I'm saying. The only problem is running out of graveyard fodder.

I hope get Wordsoul's Rage it's just perfect for my Windgrace. Card I would definitely try is Reenact the Crime.

We got ever clue weapon so far except the revolver, If they don't reveal the revolver I am gonna be pissed.
C o l d
C a s e
C r a c k e r
is this like a funky cold medina?
It took until Rope for me to get it's a cluedo reference cycle
I wish cloaking was 2 mana instead. 3 mana seems really expensive to work in standard.
I thought Hidden in Plain Sight was Storm the Festival with extra steps but a higher ceiling.
I think he's really underestimating the card's power.

19:59 I want to Reenact the Crime in response to opponent channeling Trumpeting Carnosaur to deal 3 damage.

I assume your token has trample and wasn’t silenced due to the “Copy it.” text
So Dev... I'm noticing a lot of cards in the couch... I'm feeling like something was missed. 🤷
Loving this spoiler season. Thanks Dev.
Set looks cool!!
You my spirit animal dev
HiPSis ramp. if you got flickers... i'll take invasion of zendikar
14:28 what treasure deck?...
The big notables are Charming Scoundrel and Big Score. The RG Invasion might be decent too
DUDE WHY IS EVERYTHING SORCERY SPEED... there are some very useful cards in this set if they would just be instant smh my head ;-;
An other Niveau hype !
"What's a moirder?"
Turn 3 play jace tick up… turn 4 mill with jace for 15 then play reenact the crime
Love ya Dev! ❤😂🎉😢😮😅😊
is it just me or dose perimeter enforcer look like @PleasantKenobi
Another rare multicolored creature, another disappointment.
I was beginning to get excited about this set until the rares showed up. These are bloody terrible!

Gotta say I'm horrible with this tiny phone keyboard and miss typing.
