@Ar D Ehhhhh even if there's no cause and effect taking place, the spear is thrown with all of Cu's might, and is an anti-army noble phantasm. Dodging isn't an option because of how fast it's moving and the impending area of effect being lethal regardless. As Archer states before Cu throws it, the only way to survive it is to take it head on
But didn't Saber have just a B luck stat when she dodged it (B is still good, but surely not 'massive')?

Why he didn't Dodge, once Gae Bolg is launch there is no way to dodge... And honestly no heroic spirit should have had a way of blocking it.
However we get the beyond the impossible Rho Aias moment for Archer, gotta love this scene, Archer should have suffered more to be honest, but it was just fine.
Heh. It's quite telling that this war has at least three heroes who can block it: Archer, Saber (w/ Avalon) & Gilgamesh (with whatever bullshit he'd pull out of the Gate of Babylon; Nasu has went on record saying Giggles would just use something broken). And Berserker could just tank it. Assassin fights in an environment where ranged attacks are pretty useless, but it should work against Rider & Caster: though Rider would probably be able to face it with her Bellerophon (same with Avalonless Saber using Excalibur). Caster is pretty fucked in a direct fight though, as evident in her battle against Archer; the only reason she survived is because he decided she'd be useful later.
More then that really, its reverses Cause and Effect,
the moment he throws the lance, it has already pierced your heart, the spear is merely moving towards the target to cope with the effect that has already happened.
Dodging is impossible, the only thing you can do is prevent the spear from actually reaching your heart, to deny the cause from lining up with the effect that supposedly already happened.
Something impossible to do for a regular human as its in essence denying a natural law.
Its not that Gae Bolg can't be dodged, its just that it already hit you the moment he throws it, while the spear itself is still in his hands, thus its moving towards where its supposed to be to restore reality that was effectively broken when cause and effect were reversed.
That dumb ass girl saying he should move made me cringe. Archer had just finished saying it aims for the hearts so taking it head on is the only way but the dumb bitch doesn't know how to read which doesn't surprise me considering she didn't even understand Lancer's name.
Actually, no. Lancer has two Noble Phantasms. Both involve the use of Gae Bolg, but one is the Anti-Unit version which reverses cause and effect while the other is the Anti-Army version that splits into hundreds of spearheads.
The version used by Lancer is the Anti-Army one since the other one requires him to be within a range of 10 meters from the enemy. The reason Archer didn't dodge was because he woulnd't have been able to get out of the way.

Really hate how the makers of the series were so loose with the meaning of a Noble Phantasm tough,
one moment its a skill, the other moment its a piece of equipment, another moment its said every servant only has 1 as a rule, the next moment EVERY damned servant has about 2 to 10 noble phantasms on them.
Would be so much easier if everyone simply has 1 Noble phantasm, and all those skills are just tied to that noble phantasm (for example, if Gilgamesh's Gate of Babylon is his Noble phantasm, then all his tools and weapons, including Ea are simply part of his 1 Noble Phantasm.)

The scene is actually exaggerated.
Rho Aias is the perfect counter to thrown Gea Bolg, the only damage Archer should get is from the final explosion
Archer takes damage for each layer destroyed tho and its not the perfect counter only when thrown as Rho Aias is only anti projectile so when used to pierce a target without throwing it will just bypass it (i think)
Bit late to this, but the simple explanation is:
Gae Bolg reverses cause and effect to strike it's target, meaning the moment it's activated it's already hit. The spear being thrust or thrown is merely signalling to the world "This is happening now", and the outcome is in truth already decided.
Rho Aias is an Anti-Projectile Conceptual Noble Phantasm. In fact, it's the Ultimate Anti-Projectile Conceptual Noble Phantasm. Just like fire is always extinguished when met with water, no projectile, no matter how powerful, will ever penetrate Rho Aias. It's purpose as a shield; it's very concept of existence, denies this form being possible.
The problem now becomes "the Spear will always hit when thrown" vs "the Shield that will always block something thrown" The Unstoppable Force vs the Immovable Object. It's a paradox. It doesn't make sense. So to stop the contradictions, the world defaulted back to basics, and it came down to a simple show of strength: the side with the most power would win. That's why Rho Aias didn't just stop the spear outright.
Rho Aias in full, 7 petal mode has 7 layers, each as strong as a fortress wall. The issue is that it's conceptual structure is tied to it's user. Every time a layer breaks, the damage taken is reflected upon it's wielder's body. That's why Archer was hurt.

@@Renjuuichi The real Rho Aias would have lost to Gae Bolg. This one could withstand it only because the concept of it blocking an otherwise unblockable projectile during the Trojan War was turned into a Conceptual Weapon.
Archer also sympathizes with his creations (one of his steps to tracing), meaning he can use any weapon (and shield) to the same extent as their original wielders; it's why he can use Noble Phantasms, objects that otherwise can only be used by their original owner.
Being not the real owner doesn't impede Archer at all. He's a sword, so all weapons and objects of war see him as a kindred spirit. If he wanted to, Archer could trace Rule Breaker or Gae Bolg easily. It'd just be suspicious and give away his ability.
Also the explanation I gave was the explanation from the original source: the Visual Novel, so. Yeah, this is what happened: Paradox, world said fuck it, most powerful wins, Gae Bolg just about won.
I'd love to see a crossover between Grey Faction and this series as 'Dingir' has Balmung and Gram, so he'd totally fit in against these heroes.

@@r.a.fgattaiguy845 Not necessarily. Protection from Arrows doesn't defend Lancer from ranged AOE attacks, so Archer could just spam a ton of exploding swords in UBW. But Archer's safest method of beating Lancer would probably be to just fire broken phantasms at him from long-distance.
@@n00d13sandr1c3 archer can use ubw for a few minutes and Cu survived against Gil for 12 hours. Ubw can't do any thing to Cu. Against most servants it is inneffective.
@@Mythos66 yeah and he can't really use broken phantasm in UBW since using weapons doesn't cost any mana but should weapons be destroyed the cost will simply add to the already extremely mana draining reality marble. So Emiya can not spam broken phantasm outside and inside even less.
FYI, Archer has in his possession a weapon that could kill lancer in 1 hit, but does not use it because when he was just a boy he met lancer and always admired him
Jack Edger that’s not true. Cu has a geass that says he must lose to an Irish opponent wielding Caladbolg. Archer isn’t Irish, so he can’t use it to insta win against Cu.

I'm referring to the scene where Lancer kills Kirei when Kirei is about to kill Rin, and then the following scene when Lancer comes back from the dead again; this time, to stop that bastard Shinji from raping Rin by stabbing him in the arm (and Shinji runs off crying and screaming, and it's an even more satisfying scene when Lancer first punched him in the previous episode), and let me tell you, people are going to react with absolute excitement when they see that!
However, you might need to combine Lancer's initial death from episode 19 into that upload because it helps explain the following events with Kirei and Shinji.
Also, will you still do live reactions for Rin vs Caster and Caster + Kuzuki's deaths? Those two scenes were pretty noteworthy of season 2 thus far IMO.
Please do episode 20, I want to see their reaction to shirou's resolve
