At last someone doing a herringbone correctly. I’ve been looking to see how people were doing it and not one of them used a border. It looks a hundred times better with a border. Personally I like a three board border.
Laid one without a border yesterday (my mate was in charge) and you're dead right. A border looks far better - and simplifies the awkward cuts at returns, etc.
That was the most comprehensive explanation of how to set out for laying the flooring I have seen on TH-cam, fantastic job and Tony's expertise is second to none. 👍

Superb job Tony . Done a few Herringbone floors over the last couple of years and this video will be a great asset to anyone who is thinking of a attempting this. First one I did was Reclaimed French farmhouse - Tedd Todd floors . It was all different thicknesses & no t&g. It was a nightmare 😀. Once it starts to run out your knackered.

Love parquet, proper old skool, I plan to do the same with my property that I now have acquired. I may consider putting my own take on it and install cross grain walnut in between border and herringbone just to change it up, from a fellow carpenter. Love the content lads. As soon as I saw the cuts in that (pain in the arse stepped back) skirting I knew the rest of the floor would be spot on. Great Job Tony and team. Mind you, still makes me laugh that parquet is trendy once again. Many floors laid in the 60s only to be ripped up or covered with wall to wall carpet in the 70s and 80s!

Not in English. Though but helped me pick up techniques for cutting the border in when I did my hall and landing. Railsaw is great technique so you aren't cutting individual pieces in up the border.
Hi Ryan I’am so annoyed with myself, for some unknown reason having a senior moment with the camera, anyway the easiest way would be to use a guide rail as suggested below and thank you for sending over the link that’s very kind of you and set the saw just shy of the bottom of the parquet block, in the old days they would line and edge saw and finish with a hand plane, remember the cork on the exposed finished edges,

Awesome stuff as ever. Well marked out and decent use of old school techniques ( not a laser in sight ) . But surely there must be some compound errors in there somewhere resulting in a gap or a wedge cut. Must be hidden under a corner pot plant!. Very good indeed for such a big non standard shaped room.

Really good comprehensive explanation of how to lay Herringbone flooring. Do you have a video showing how you cut the boarder in? You have done an amazing job. This is the part that makes are breaks the job, anything slightly out here would ruin the entire floor.

Hello, wonderful tutorial. We are about to tackle a small L-shaped hallway with reclaimed parquet flooring which I have cleaned up. Did your primer / adhesive etc come from MKM? Or where from? And also, what size of notched trowel do you use (as I have them in all sizes for my mosaic work)? I wish I could get you up north to do my floor…. Or at least talk through some of our logistical issues

Firstly great video, really clear! - I need your help, I am attempting to re-lay a parquet floor from my lounge into my hall way upstairs. We're working with much smaller blocks (140mm X 46mm) but we're looking at doing double herringbone. Do you have any tips on working out the correct working lines and working on a floor thats not quite level?
Hi, how did you lay the border and attach to main floor? Was there a gap for expansion on the outside? We are about to get someone in to do something very similar!

Great video thanks for the in depth explainations. Your room is similar to mine, not square / rectangular but had that section coming off it. How did you work out the centre line, did you take the one room measurement, or measure at the widest point and work from there?

Very useful vid. It would be useful to hear how you did the border blocks. I'm planning to use a tracksaw to cut the points but am concerned that the track might shift or the blade might touch the concrete ... is there a better way of doing it, or is it just a case of being careful?
Hi Tony, another excellent video, great instruction and lovely standard of finish. I have not seen solid wood being used with underfloor heating before. Is this now acceptable as long as wood and screed humidity is correct prior to laying and suitable primer used?
Hi L Pat to be honest I had the same thought process as you goes against the grain but spoke to Broad Leaf and the process with what they do to the block allows it to be used on under floor heating, we had to record all of are measures humidity, blocks for two weeks and the Trammex is the only machine that does everything so well expensive but good it’s a must thanks for watching all the best Tony 👍 have a awesome weekend

Great tutorial. I do about 20 herringbone floors per year but I don't faff too much. Just get ur lines down and keep that first row perfect and let glue set..
Hi CJS Paul the longest thing for me is the meter testing and recording temps and humidity over the two weeks after that it plain sailing, you are spot on let first row down the crack on keep a check on straight lines and square and that’s it thanks for watching all the best Tony 👍 have a awesome week
So once the first line is down and dry you can just put them down with not much care about the square etc. Just the first line is where the work goes really?

Easily the best how-to-parquet video i've found. Tony - do you have any tips or videos on how to do the border - I assume you cut the field tiles in situ pnce glued to suit the width of the double tile border ?

Hi Tony, another great video as alway, I just wanted to clarify one point, the line you marked at 90° to your working line with a trammel, will that allow the blocks to have even cuts at both ends of the room because unless you worked out the centre of the room lengthways and measured back parallel this 90° line appears to be in a random position. I'd appreciate if you could enlighten me here and keep up the good work !
Hi Kevin thanks for your kind words, it’s the only detail I didn’t highlight which should of been mentioned but the line was worked off the length, it’s funny both width and length cut at each end were 4mm difference which means the tolerance must be 3 to 6mm potential, we worked to plaster Lines as well thanks for watching all the best Tony 👍

Thank you so much for this video. We have arranged to have herringbone flooring & I noticed that solid wood planks were not being glued down to the floor. Plus, it was going off at an angle. So, now I'm back to square one, looking for a professional who can lay the floor correctly. 😩

Hi Tony. Another great video. Attention to detail and prep work fantastic. However is this flooring second hand? Now I like rustic, but on parquet I'm not sure I could live with the gaps and dings in its "character". Is it the intention to sand it flat and fill the gaps? Keep em coming love the format and technical content-that is a given!

Double border is great. Workmanship in laying the floor was very good. It's a shame about the finished product - looks great from the long shot across the kitchen (also testimony to decent sanding job - can you tell us what sander was used and how it was done?) but close-up details make it look a bit rough. Owing to the quality of the blocks themselves. Seems like it's reclaimed wood, and whoever ripped it up did so without any care. Good that you showed close-ups of the blocks before they went down. Edges don't look clean and straight. Those shots in the video were helpful for me to understand why it looked a bit rough once laid. You can see the problems in those closeup shots of individual blocks. We are lucky enough to have 200 sq metres of hardwood parquet (teak I believe) and the edges are near perfect - the more I look at it the more I think we are lucky to have found the lot. It has clearly been treated very well. Spent a year already cleaning the bitumen from the tongues / grooves / back. Personally I think darker / harder wood parquet blocks look a lot nicer when they go down as the edges look much tidier. Anyway this isn't a comment on the job at all, which was clearly superbly done. I just think the raw materials didn't match the quality of the install. I'd love to hear others' thoughts, I'm going to be laying about 70 sq m of the stuff myself and I'm a perfectionist, so I just hope I can get it done to my own standards! Out of interest, would you recommend getting a sanding company in to sand it? I've seen professional floor sanding companies do their thing - a couple of cigarette smoking oafs pushing machines around - can't be hard to do it properly right? Just a lot of work.
Hi Mat that’s how you purchase the blocks in, the interior designer wanted the floor to look aged so you buy them in tumbled and the floor wasn’t sanded all the best Tony 👍
@@BuildWithAE blimey- blocks tumbled intentionally? interesting to know. We’ve bought tumbled London stock bricks before but didn’t know you could get similar for parquet. Reason I mentioned sanding job looked good as light reflected very nicely (in straight line shadows etc) in the long shot. A few closeups of borders looked like the blocks weren’t bang flat though. Your job was really good. Loved the tip about getting a square line (using the arc) - never seen that before. Will be using that :) Cheers
What thickness is best for engineered oak herringbone flooring ? For instance we are currently looking at 20mm thick in total that’s the whole thickness of the board uk the oak on top of the ply is 1.2mm is this ok or should we go 4mm or 6mm ?
Should be 4 to 6 mm I would have a good look on line 👍

How are the metre squared blocks laid ?
If you are laying it on wood flooring, what would you put on the floor first?
I would nogging all the floors out to 300 or 400 centres overlap with Plywood leave gap between plywood 2to3mm and then bond the parquet down all the best Tony

Great Video, can you recommend any decent books for DIY hobbyists on laying hardwood floors? I've laid a bunch of laminate but would like to progress to herringbone hardwood, would be great if you had a guide or book that you recommend.

Does the floor have to be perfectly flat? Have got a fitter who said he can get away with my floor that’s not perfectly flat, said it’ll look the same but it could creak a little… what do you think? Cheers
Absolutely flat
Well just think in days of old blocks were laid in hot bitch as the DPM on lime droppings on a hard core floor slab. as a question were the oak blocks from the far east and secondhand as they looked a little battered on the corners or distressed at least.
Hi eddo167 they were from Broadleaf U.K. and they had been tumbled for that old effect. The old days of bitumen pour absolutely nightmare to do but FairPlay to them all the best Tony 👍
Do you fill any small gaps between pieces?
Hi Bill any small gaps get filled with the finishing coat this is a three layer application, clean down and degrease then light sand and then first coat, light sand floor paper wipe down hoover repeat the process and then a last finish coat hope this helps all the best Tony 👍 have a awesome weekend
