She got hurt because of how out of control he was so he decided to become what he is now. After fighting Luffy he found someone who is not only stronger than him but showed him the path he wished he had taken. Sort of like how Bellamy comes to terms with Luffy being the man he should has idolized.
At first I thought Luffy was only able to get hits on Katakuri because he was weakened by the stab wound he inflicted on himself. But that wasn’t the case. It was because Luffy’s Observation Haki was getting stronger and stronger.
Believe it or not but luffys endurance in this fight seems more believable after his devil fruit reveal. I always critiqued the impossible endurance luffy showed in this fight after being battered down again and again.
