This is the band that got me into symphonic metal, and from there, into Japanese metal. Sharon den Adel was not formally trained, but has one of the most naturally beautiful voices in the world. Far too reactors check them out. It's not about drugs, it's about the emancipation of Black people in South Africa.

For me, their highlight is the 2008 "Black Symphony" show with the Metropole Orchestra. Like this one, it emphasised the vocals and orchestra over guitar/bass, but did it incredibly well. That show was firmly symphonic metal, but they did incorporate more pop elements in the 2010s.
I drifted away from their music but I've started to get back into Within Temptation again recently after the Japanese scene reignited my love of metal. I don't know this album though, and my reaction to this song was similar to yours. You should definitely try one song from Black Symphony. Could be Ice Queen, Deceiver of Fools, The Promise, anything really.

If you look at the band members you see they had the same tube inputs on their arms that Xzibit had. The band had already broken free from whatever kept Xzibit a slave/prisoner.

Two bands I can never get tired of listening to. Band Maid, who you have featured and Within Temptation. Both have a style that doesn't stick to a set genre. I no longer know what the different name s for music genres mean. I just know if I like it. But Within Temptation have a power rock vibe. They are best when you end up (even if you are ten or a hundred) punching the air and sticking it to the man or the system or the fact that you are fighting some foe that never exists. Music should be escapism and great music should leave you with a smile. Within Temptation do that. Although this may not have been a fair track to show it. The live Black Symphony concert is well worth taking a look at.

Whoa. Never thought I see another B-M fan liking WT. I've been a fan of WT before B-M. They were my favorite band until I discovered B-M. But, still support WT up to this point. In fact, I just received their latest single yesterday and have their latest album pre-ordered. Have their entire discography. However, my collection for B-M has now surpassed WT. I have to agree the live Black Symphony is a masterpiece 🤘🤘

I never thought of it but I agree. I’ve been a WT fan for a long time and I’ve only been into BM for a few years. I’ve never been disappointed by WT. either the music or live performances. A consistent favorite of mine for 15+ years now. My love for Band-Maid is very similar. I just love everything they do and they’ve blown me away live twice now. Sharon may be the best front person I’ve ever seen live. FWIW

With Nightwish they are considered one of the founders of symphonic metal. They are as controversial as they are successful because they always sound very poppy. They started out in 1997 as a fun band because Sharon and Robert just wanted to make music together. The surprising breakthrough came in 2000 and Sharon is only now taking singing lessons. Since 2011, Robert has been concentrating on studio work because he looks after their three children.
There current video created with an AI. There is also a bass:
Within Temptation - Bleed Out (official music video)
    The breakthrough:
Within Temptation and Metropole Orchestra - Ice Queen Live HD.mp4
    Another good collaboration:
Within Temptation - The Reckoning feat. Jacoby Shaddix (official music video)
In the meantime they have faced strong competition:
BEYOND THE BLACK - Is There Anybody Out There? (OFFICIAL MUSIC VIDEO)
DELAIN - Masters Of Destiny (Official Video) | Napalm Records

Sharon and Robert are partners and have 3 kids together. They met in high school. Sharon can sing higher than this.

  • @chriso6719

One of their many collaborations, this mix with hip hop/rap is a nice switch up, but not representative of their catalog. They do like to move around in music styles, as the description you read alluded to. Sharon and Robert are partners and have 3 kids together. Robert's brother ,Martijn, was the bands 1st keyboardist. He went on to form Delain, a band you have listened to.
Please do check out more to get a better taste of their music.
The 2008 Black Symphony concert (with Metropole Orchestra) is awesome. Recommend "Our Solemn Hour" , or "Ice Queen" from that. Another collab you might be interested in is "Paradise (What About Us)" which features Tarja.

Enjoyed the reaction. Have to say it is one of my least favorite Within Temptation songs. Sharon's vocals are on point here and so beautiful. She is self taught. She also always has amazing outfits. She has a degree in fashion design and designs all her outfits. Their earlier stuff is heavier and then they moved to a more poppy side and recently have been moving back to more of a metal sound. One of my favorites is their first big hit Ice Queen. Lots of great live versions but my favorite is still the music video because you get to see some of Sharon's unique dancing. Her dad was a Dutch diplomat and she spent part of her teen years living in Indonesia where she picked up on Balinese hand dancing which she incorporates into her movements to the music. Very beautiful and unique. Also highly recommend her duet with Anneke van Giersbergen, Somewhere, from the Black Symphony concert. Absolutely stunning harmonies. Often called the most beautiful duet ever. Other great songs are Mother Earth, Paradise (with Tarja), Faster, Don't Pray for Me, Stand My Ground, and Angels.

😅😂 Love how you don't understand this. Love your honest reaction. Sorry, this is to difficult to understand when you listen to it.
Within Temptation always does something out of the standard box that all of us put everything in. A lot of times people have tunnel vision when it comes to music. 😅😂 sorry, you don't understand the lyrics either. Thank you for your honesty. Music is to me personally universial. I love different genres but, I admire and respect musicians that have the guts and nerve to go outside the set music boxes. That's just me. I like how musicians evolve and don't stick to same thing over and over again. To me personally they are not evolving but, kind a boring because, if you listen to 1 album/song etc the rest is the same. It doesn't mean they aren't good at what they are doing but, to me personally hey are not evolving or are afraid to step out of the box. To me the world chances, poeple chance, why not music... Bye the way the music from now and also in the future are from it's origin inspired from the past. Without the past there's no future.

I would consider WT to be at the Commercial Radio end of Symphonic Metal. Recently toured sharing headline with Evanescence. Videos are often striking. Try Entertain You from their official channel.

    • @jamescurfman3284

Accurate, at least lately. Their earlier stuff was far too heavy to be on normal radio (except in Sweden or Finland).

WT have been in the top 10 in the singles and album charts on several occasions - mainly in the Netherlands but also in other European countries and have had at least one No1 placing. Those are the facts.@@rvb2986

A few of WT's music videos are fantastical. One is about the Sun going nova, and what happens to Earth (if it still exists) when that nova will (eventually) happen. That one is really visually over-the-top!
The one that I believe is their most famous MV is basically a dream sequence (it's over-the-top because dreams are so very weird...) and is set to a Rock Ballad, a really great song.
Another is set on post--apocalyptic Earth and has hardly any special effects (some, to be sure, but not many), mostly practical effects.
Others would be considered real-life situations that might happen or may have actually happened before, all practical effects, nothing fancy but the band and videos always tell great stories. :)

Re- your comment at 6:30s re mash-up of musical styles, you should check out the KLF - a groundbreaking early 1990's band that fell off the music scene after a massive dispute with their record label. "3am Eternal" is a good start to a sadly small catalogue.

Within Temptation is one of the big influencers in symphonic metal that has shaped much of the industry. You will find a lot of connections between them and other bands playing today in the genre. This song is a bit of an exploration outside of their norm. Check out songs like Iron, Angels, Faster and more recently Bleed Out or Wireless. They have a huge catalog.

As much as I appreciate Sharon's vocal skills, WT studio recordings always sounds overproduced to me. It has the same effect for me that Imagine Dragons does. Just so many unnecessary layers that muddy any real emotion or connection to the music for me.

Since when is WT mainstream? And 'now' is 10 years ago. The album Hydra is multiheaded because of the name and so they did all kinds of collaborations. It's daring just like their latest works.
