THE QUIET GOODBYE
You didn’t leave with shouts or rage, no door slammed in the night,
You left in quiet whispers, like a shadow fading light.
No final fight to end it all, no words to make it sting,
Just silence where there used to be the songs that we would sing.
We drifted like the tides, pulled apart by unseen hands,
Once close enough to feel the beat, now strangers in new lands.
The little things we used to love, the jokes we used to share,
Became the things we couldn’t stand, reminders of despair.
Now the bed feels wide and empty, though your side’s still warm and neat,
And I wonder if you’re out there thinking of the love we beat.
But I know in every breath I take, in every sleepless sigh,
That sometimes love’s most painful when it leaves without goodbye.
No storm, no crash, just drifting far, like ships that lose their way,
And though you’re gone, the weight of you is with me every day.
I wish you’d left with anger, with something loud and clear,
But the quiet goodbye you gave me is what hurts the most, my dear.
