    Having lived my life completely controlled by fear, it's crazy how just the pursuit of an artistic career reshapes our relationship with fear and the unknown. It gets you to grow whether you realize it or not. Always a pleasure, great video Adam ! Nice Jordan Peterson shoutout hell yeah

    • @AdamDuffArt
      @AdamDuffArt  6 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Well associate that fear with other familiar fears in your life - it might be the fear of "not fitting in", the "fear of rejection"... Because when it comes down to it - that's really what we're facing. You've never feared your own art, because you completely identify with it - but when you try to step into a clique that may or may not accept you, that can be petrifying - and often is the obstacle between a highly skilled artist and what could have been a fabulous career.

      Well thank you - it was about time. Man, I look back at some of my earlier art talks and I'm like WOW that's bad quality EVERYTHING! - But, my message was really my focus, so in that sense it wasn't that bad at all - I wouldn't take them down. Actually it gives me a chance to reflect

    • @nikitam216
      @nikitam216 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Your videos were never low quality, especially the message has always been superb. But now it's clear that your passion for photography has taken a positive effect on the general polish of the video :)

    Gosh I am so glad TH-cam recommended this video to me today.
    A month ago, I threw myself a challenge; I would create my very first animation and post it online. My mindset at the time was purely to see how well I could follow a deadline (because I felt the pressure of "needing to show my ability to follow instructions so that I looked more employable... As if most artists showed their first animation in their portfolio haha). Today, I am close to being done with it, and I have learned a couple things from this experience; first, as fun as animation is, working in the industry would not be a life-time interest of mine, I really can't see myself clocking in at 8am and doing story boarding, linearting or coloring until 7pm. No way. Second thing I learned, animation is too time consuming. I am the kind of creative person that gets ideas very fast and wants to move on from one project to the other quickly. Some people may blame that on my own inaptitude to stay put and go through with my ideas, or even not being "that into art", which are valid points to ponder upon, though to those people I would answer that maybe I just haven't found an idea that is worth pursuing entirely yet and also, why would I have spent years of my life dedicating myself to art if I didn't like it that much? In the end, nobody's forcing me to do art, and I know that, I do it for myself, because I used to be an avid writer but the words started to become too oppressive, because I started to feel chained by words, and grammar and vocabulary...
    The thing is, art makes me feel free, liberated. I can express myself like I never would be able to with words.
    But that's besides the point. When I first looked at schools and ways to get into the art industry, all I could think about was getting in a school that would allow me to make connections with big brands and get me a job in a well-known studio. Now, however, I am not so sure. I have been saving up to go to art school, and I could. But do I really need to? Do I really want to? Well, yes, I do want to, but I want to go to an art school that will allow me to explore my creative mind like never before. I want my art and mind to blossom through the experiences and people I will meet there. Frankly, I want to know myself and my art better; though maybe that would be a job better fulfilled by a therapist, haha.
    Oh god, this comment is all over the place. I don't know if anyone will read that, I just wanted to leave this here as a time-stamp of my mindset now, and maybe I can come back to it in a few years and, hopefully, I would have figured things out a bit better by then.
    Good luck on your journeys, everyone!!

    • @IsisRoseStudio
      @IsisRoseStudio 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I relate to everything you said! (Except rn I’m still figuring out if animation is right for me) How are you doing now friend ? :’)

    • @lpsfilmingkitty157
      @lpsfilmingkitty157 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have the same experience! I'm a very fast paced artist that likes to jump between many art styles, many techniques and such. So a job at animation I feel would be wrong for me! Unless it's storyboarding as it allows constant change, though time consuming nonetheless.
      I ended up concluding that I fit into a career that's more like concept art or Visual development, as it seems to be more fast paced and more all over the place between many things and ideas.
      I found an art school that has a very wide first year where you try many things and then specialise in something! I dont know where you live and if there are unis as such there, but I have seen quite a few that follow a similar teaching style in the UK!
      I really hope you find what you are looking for! And the animation challenge you set for yourself sounds great to explore

    ADAM! Where was this talk 20 years ago?! My goodness! I worked for a tier 1 company supplying the auto industry way back. Won awards and everything for the company, but just didn't fit in. I was ousted. Today, if it were not for some hard-learned lessons in other fields & my children saving me, I would still be wondering why "I suck as a designer".
    I agree. I look on IG, TH-cam, or FB & see that this is a perfect time to be an artist. I have a college mate who has a huge online following and the income to support his lifestyle.
    Now, it does take work. No question about it (being a salesman once or twice in my life taught me that). Yet, I'd rather build relationships with and grow my own customer base.
    Thank you for sharing this. Finally somebody placed words to what I've been observing.

    JP being controversial is certainly an understatement. Not saying he doesn't occasionally have decent points like how a clock is right twice a day, and people are allowed to have their beliefs, but boy oh boy. His race-baiting and conservative outdated views on masculinity can cause more harm than good in many cases. Ppl can agree or not. Not my business as long as no one is actively hurting others

    I watched this video during quarantine, and the part about smoking really got to me. You said quitting smoking was easy, the easiest thing in the world- and I, too, believed you. I can say I probably haven't smoked in 6 months, give or take. I couldn't even say for certain, because it was such a non issue, such an easy decision to make and change to make, that I forgot to jot it down on a calendar and only realized I had actually officially quit smoking like a month later. Thank you so much

    Working for a company is one of my motivations to improve, and it's also a way for me to think that sometime I'll be able to live from art, because right now I don't see being an independent artist as an option. I've posted my artwork in social media, I try to interact with other artists as much as I can, and it just seems like an useless effort. The discouragement of not being able to market myself is what makes me really fear of my future as an artist.

      Same here - I'm very on the fence about him with regards to certain topics, but regardless of how controversial he can be, you have to ask yourself what motivates his opinions, malice and ignorance or compassion or a simple reinforcement of his own human rights. From what I've seen of him so far, his heart seems to be in the right place - I might not agree with all of his views, but I don't feel the need to protest them - they're unique to him and he's never attempted to step on anyone else's feet with them.

    Hey Adam, thanks for this video. I really need that. I graduated a year ago and become an intern at a studio in Johanessburg [South Africa]. After that, I've been struggling to get a job in storyboarding and vis dev. I've had many opportunities by different studios here that liked my portfolio work but when it came time to take the test I was never the right fit. I hated myself for not being the right guy for the job but your video just gave me hope. It made me realize why I think the way I think as a creative person and why it's hard for me and many others to break into the industry. I'm gonna try things differently and create my own career path. Thanks, Adam that video was great.

      It's amazing isn't it - how things can change under our feet without knowing it - but that's something I've witnessed about human life of every venue, be it political, social, economical etc... and that's that when there's a long term imbalance, then that imbalance breaks - the pendulum of change usually swings a bit too far in the opposite direction for a while before settling down in a balanced spot. That's where our industry has been for a long time - it was in a state of dire poverty and unemployment, then it was pulled out of that poverty by being industrialized - however now that artists have gained the tools and the confidence to take on more responsibilities than just painting and drawing - we're now empowered with the ability to self employ and self market - and we are in a unique position to be able to both handle the logistics as well as the artistic promotion. We're in a damn good spot right now and I only see things getting better moving forward.

    Valuable info, just an issue : if you're not a social animal, you're still screwed.
    I've seen countless of folks with Aspergers claim that being an artist is great for them but they completely miss the point where you either have to be super social to sell yourself online, or be social enough to be capable of working in a studio.

    can you do a video on how to start a website to promote your art business (like, say how to do it dirt cheap and don't just advertise squarespace and wix like everyone else)? Id like to start one, but I don't really know how it would benefit me or how much it'd cost. Most website things like wix make you pay per month and I'm 16 without a job or car and can't afford paying per month

    Man, I wish I had heard that early on in my career. I tried for more than ten years to be an artist with an industrial mindset, which is not who I am. I have to admit, though, that without working for others, I would not have developed the connections I do now.

    i don't think someone has to be one or the other... i am a stationary engineer and was trained to operate power trains on air craft carriers... i also have a MFA in fine art. I find that one informs the other and vice versa. My mechanical background has taught me the small details of complicated systems and my MFA has allowed me to look at those systems from unique perspectives that other engineer never thing of. My art is informed by understanding of systems and how they relate within themselves and in relation to the rest of the world

    Man Good stuff art talk in this video. I really appreciate it because I've been there in between industrial and creative world and the Problem is with order and organization comes standards and with creativity there is risk. But with youtube and social media finally creativity pays more and changes industrialized rules with an Educationonal mixed with entertainment content creation and opened experience sharing. (a land of fruits) But the problem with these kind of content creations is the short term value and on the contrary, a short Dream like that old age Disney animation will never die as a content because of the so much different of today's minds wanting to feed fast little creations. People used to be inspired by ancient civilization monuments thinking big now it is a bout fast money and the hardest part is putting together a lot of artists in a room trying to focus on a long term one only good idea. 2D animations are gone simply for me because of the long term learning experience that comes with and that can't match the detailed 3D animations. And now there is the unity mini 3D sequences ! Looks like the contents as good as they grow they are definitely becoming shorter :p

    Adam, I rarely comment on youtube videos, but guess what... You just made me do it! Why? Because this video hits so damn close to home it's insane. I'm about to be 20 and even tho I have close to no art-related work experience, I just know that I can't see MYSELF doing art for OTHER people to be something worth aiming for. Atleast for me.
    I'm still somewhat of a beginner, but one of my life goals is to be able to make money by being myself, doing the things I love, helping as many people as I can and just live my own life to the fullest extend. Not give all my time away just to work on things that I might not enjoy.
    Yes It'll be hard to figure all this out, yes it'll take time, but guess what. I'd rather die trying to be myself, than live for someone elses dreams.

      Wow, a chip off the old block! And yeah, I know that feeling - It just took me a few decades of trial and error to figure it out. Now, do I feel that I "do work for myself"? not really, but what I DO produce is FROM myself - my artwork is a reflection of myself, and not a product that I'm producing for someone else. It's MY vision - but in the end I'm producing my vision for someone

    • @softic3d836
      @softic3d836 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a great way to put it! I fully agree and I might have phrased myself wrong. Working FOR others, in the sense of making someone happy/teaching them/helping them to find their own way and so on... can be life changing!
      On the other hand, as you said, you are creating YOUR vision. If your vision doesn't align with what your superiors want, you most likely will have to change it to the liking of someone else. At that point it's not your/my art anymore, I was just the pawn used to create a product. Which is fine, if nobody would do that we wouldn't have all these amazing games/movies and all those things, but that's not what art is for ME atleast. Maybe someone can relate to this.
      I don't really have a point I'm trying to make, just wanted to share my thoughts on this. Thanks for this video! Made me think a lot.

    • @AdamDuffArt
      @AdamDuffArt  6 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @softic3d836

      That's exactly what I'm trying to figure out right now. What kind of art do I want to create? What kind of emotions do I want others to feel? What kind of stories do I want to tell? All questions with a ton of different answers, finding my own answer to them is harder than I expected!

      I love this thread and this video, it feels reassuring that someone feels the same way i do. I've been asking myself a lot lately why I'm pursuing art, and it's kind of frustrating looking back to the things I had been doing with my skills. I've realized most of the time, I'm only drawing for the sake of impressing someone, to satisfy someone, or to fulfill someone's dream.. and this blocked me from the way i want to express myself in art.. Because of this thread, now things became more clear for my goals.. I hope I could also pursue art, reflecting myself and my own vision someday.

    I agree with you, Jordan Peterson can be super annoying with his inflexible value judgments . He is good at categorizing and simplifying and that's great to make complex systems more transparent. But then he applies the same logic to creating value judgements and it just doesn't work. It's great to see a more nuanced use of his initial analysis :) thanks!

    My question or statement is about game art. What if you want to do game art and work for a company? I completely agree that every artist should be running their own business, but you cant really do concept art for games for your self and sell it. So what should you do when thats what you want to do with your artistic ability? I just found this channel and love it. Keep it up.

    • @Captain_MonsterFart
      @Captain_MonsterFart 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You work for a game company! Duh! If you feel compelled to do that, then it's totally cool! Regular pay and benefits are definitely a good thing. Also I have noticed that all of my most favorite skilled independent artists all once worked in the commercial art world. You produce A LOT of work that way so your skills get very strong.
      Beware of being too influenced by strangers on TH-cam. It's happened to me a million times over the years. This is just their opinion, it's not 'truth".

    Loving this Adam. Favorite videos so far!
    I am happy you brought up Jordan Peterson and his theories, he has really helped me making me understand myself (did a personality test too). I am very very low in industriousness (but high in orderliness, if that matters in this context) and very high in openness. I love creating and I want to get into concept art and I'd like to work with a crative fantasy studio, however you say there is more than just working for companies like Blizzard and CD Projekt Red and different ways of getting income such as Patreon, TH-cam, Kickstarter, Gumroad, etc. But what options do I have? What ''model'' should I create? I'd like to stick to the tried and true and I don't have an entrepreneur mindset, but is that ok? I am still young and I have no expereience with the real world, so for me this is all new.

    • @AdamDuffArt
      @AdamDuffArt  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      that's a DAMN good question - and one which I'm continuing to explore and discuss with smart people. Here's one thing that I've been thinking. Art alone (and this is something that Jordan Peterson hints at during one of his classroom lectures), is to COMBINE your art with something - to make a "business" out of it. Take me or Bobby Chiu or Tyler Edlin or Noah Bradley or Anthony Jones for instance - what do we have in common? We combine our passion of art with our passion for teaching.
      Take my mother, someone who mixed her passion of art with her passion of computer programming (ie - computer graphics). There honestly IS NO reliable employment to be had as a "person who sells their art" unless you're one of those very old very popular way on top of the pile type of artists. And usually by then, I've seen many artists kind of "sell out" to a more commercial personae to pull it off, to create more appeal.
      My daughter (who has only been accepted into Illustration, but hasn't finished High School yet), is inspired by artists and producers such as Rebecca Sugar, who created and wrote the music for hit animated shows like Steven Universe and Adventure Time to name a few.
      Think about how you can combine your love or art with another passion or skill you have - ANY other skill you have that's important.
      That's what us creative folk do - we're good at creating effective and meaningful connections between seemingly abstract things - again, something that Jordan Peterson describes as a strength of creative types.

      I feel like this could be an entire video on it's own and it could help a ton of people! Especially those who are "stuck" and don't know how to grow. I was one of those people, I like 3D modeling and at first I thought that was all there is to it. Just get really good at that and I'll make it somehow, but that wasn't the whole picture.
      There are so many people that are miles ahead of me and I'd never catch up. So it felt "pointless".
      After thinking about what I want to do, what kind of artist, what kind of person I want to be, I came to the conclusion that I really like helping people. Even tho I'm not the greatest 3D modeler, I'm probably not even average, but getting better and helping people along the way is the road I'll try to head towards. Finding your own road can be tough, stressful, frustrating, but in the end, once you've found it and you start heading towards it. It's definitely worth it.

    I have to add in my two cents about how lucrative (or not) illustration/art is today. I've been trying to make a living as an artist for six or seven years now, and I am shocked at how seemingly impossible it is unless you're in the top few % of industry artists in full time jobs. Making a web site today is not easy, I've dabbled in web site creation and CSS for a few years now, and it took me weeks to build a wordpress site with ecommerce functionality, and it's still not ready.
    I spent ages making prints and publishing them on print-on-demand stores, publicizing them on social media, paying a little bit for advertising. After a few months I've earned about $15.
    I'm starting to think that if I knew then what I know now, all the years of being dirt poor. There's no chance I'd have chosen this path. Now, several years in, it's hard to know if I should throw all that away and start over, or cut my losses.

    I don't really like Jordan Peterson, but watching and listening to Adam makes me almost want to read him hahaha. Anyway, many great artists get rejected from different studios/fields, because they are wrong focused. If you want to work for a, e.g., a futuristic-photorealistic shooter project, you're not going to present yourself with cartoonish, very stilyzed artwork. If you are definitely a more spontaneous person, and you want to own your ideas, you shouldn't consider being an employee in a studio.
    Great video, as always.

      You know - as much as our artwork can and does speak for itself in terms of our abilities - if you look around at artists that have made names for themselves, it's the ones who are more visible to the public - to which I'd say - TH-cam is really the best way to bring the content to the viewer rather than trying to attract the viewer to the content. It's FAR more effective in my opinion.
