This gives you an idea as to how languages made their way into continents across the world. Brazil is a Portuguese speaking country (Portugal Influence), and the rest of Latin America is Spanish speaking countries, as they were colonized by Spain; etc, etc. The native people of course did not speak the languages that is now vastly spoken in these regions, the sad reality that they were forced to accept the culture of the colonizers. Many of these countries are therefore poorer as they were stripped from their identity & left to fend for themselves after colonizers were done destroying their cities, stealing their resources and their people. Same could be said about most African nations, you get the idea, the French & British destroyed this continent & they’re still suffering today.

@@T0xiikGaz14 Actually, before European colonization, Africa was in fact home to quite some advanced civilization for its time. But, hundreds of years of European colonization has utterly destroyed much of the continent.. I could give many reasons for this. As a whole, Africa is progressing in the right direction, but many of the problems that the continent is suffering under today can be directly traced back to European colonization.
@@noahg4369 I disagree , only because civilisation can be said i agree , many cultures also yes , but there wasn't really much Nation States in the most traditional sense , as much as there wasn't really great infrastructures , so you can say that colonisation destroyed many cultures and languages , but not so much about destroying nation identity or infrastructures since there wasn't really
@@T0xiikGaz14 you are correct in some aspects. But when I said that colonizers destroyed cities/civilization, I mostly meant about those in the Americas, where there was a good amount of civilization & infrastructure.

I think you can control the direction of progress more as an empire-like power, but I feel like it impedes the social well-being of the state itself because the land area and population is just too much to keep track of effectively. I wonder if a lot of the issues that the US is facing stem from being a near-empire like power.
this list didn't mention the Persian empire, which at it's peak controlled an estimated 44% of the global population, truly one of the most dominant global superpowers

Video isn't about population. You could argue what 'biggest' means, but here it is the literal sense, Mass. Not population, economy, influence, etc, but size.

Notice that when the European powers like :Portugal, Spain, France and England set out for their empires they did this largely by sea power where as the older empires did this mostly with horses.

Right, and your comments at the end are exactly why if/when time travel exists, we will only be able to go into the future. It’s universally recognized that going into the past would alter the entire course of history and thus is an impossible task because you may not be able to get back to your own time since you messed up history and the time machine wasn’t even invented.

I am sure this may have been covered but just stick with me for a moment. They didn't mention the cultural influence of the English Language. Every Aircraft on Earth talks to the Control Tower of the Airport because it is a Universal Language. Also when I went to Thailand I seen a couple at a restaurant from Denmark at a table, and they were talking with another couple next to them at a different table from the Netherlands. They could not speak one another's language so they spoke in English. Then you have people like me from the U.S.A. and our influence on the world as well as the British Empire, which is why it is truly a World Language... English I mean. Also one thing you mentioned in your video that you said you didn't know is that the Queen is the head of state for many of the Dominions. For Example she is the Queen of Canada when she is there. Same goes for Australia and NZ when she is there. So in name only there is no Empire any more, however there is. Each and Every country in the Commonwealth of nations she is the Queen of independently, the only difference is that she doesn't rule them from London, and they have their own governments to rule themselves. She is still the Queen albeit Queen of them all but separately if that makes any sence to you. Cheers man I like your videos, keep them coming.

1) If you look at a world map you might notice that the U.S. UK, France, and other European countries have control of small islands hundreds or thousands of kilometers away from anything. Some of them are uninhabited except for military and/or scientists. It probably doesn't make sense now, but many of these remote islands were occupied in the late 1800s, during the height of European colonialism, because they were needed for steam-powered ships to refuel on coal.
2) I would have included the post-WW2 global American empire, the "Pax Americana." It is not a traditional empire of conquest and colonialization, but it functions similarly to the mercantilist British Empire. In the poor countries dictatorships are supported, provided they are anti-Communist and give carte blanche to American business interests, particularly oil, agriculture, and mining. But there is also the expense to the government of maintaining an empire. I saw one estimate that it costs more than $150 billion per year just for the many hundreds of foreign military bases, never mind the enormous U.S. Navy.

You should be proud of your heritage. Sure, the British did some controversial things, but they spread technology and democracy to parts of the world that might still be primitive today. They also created one of the richest cultures to known to this world, flourishing in the arts and music and they played a major role in the creation of modern western culture as we know it.
People never really asked for it though, now that Britain is stagnant and China a superpower would you want them to enlighten and occupy you?
They spread those technology for their own benefits to rule their colonies efficiently not because brits thought of doing charity or something.

To me the best and noble empire isn't one of a single nation's control over many people it is many people and their nation's unity in a just and noble cause of living together in peace while respecting each other's individuality.

I don't understand how Canada and Australia among others are considered Commonwealth Realms and the United States isn't.
The U.S. head of state is not Queen Elizabeth II. We Americans fought a war over this (I say we, but my ancestors were still in Europe).

The Roman Empire was vast, but it wasn't big if that makes sense. It was pretty thin at times.
But for their time rome were the richest empire in history, they had 30% of all global economy at their time. While the British had 24% of global economy at their height. And another thing to factor in is that rome conquered civilizations(empires/kingdoms) even the “barbarian” tribes were vast in population and power, while the British and other colonial empires conquered land, but that land was africa, the americas, and Australia with others, for the most part that land was filled with primitive small tribes. That land had to be built up into civilizations with great cities and such, where rome conquered existing cites and just forged them into their image of governance and law.
@@fmbrown8566 whatever reasons , it doesn’t change the fact that it wasn’t as big in size as other empires. Older empires don’t get a bump on the list just because future empires had technological advantages.
And of course the Roman Empire would have a higher percentage of the money in the world than the British and Spanish empires. 2,000 years ago there was much higher percentage of primitive people in the world at that point and less competition lol. Like empires that came before and after, Rome conquered peoples who had more so than not had a big disadvantage. And there were civilizations, kingdoms and empires in the Americas.

You realize rome had to fight face to face with swords where their life was far more at risk than a British soldier with a firearm shooting a primitive with a flint tomahawk. And yes there was a “empire” in the americas, and they sure did have wealth, they they were still primitive and was nothing compared to the empire of the time. Dude, Britain as all humans have done bad but if it wasn't for them America would not exist. Without Britain our understanding of global trade, economies, film, music, food, and much more would not exist without Britain. Britain is the most loved conquerors. Look at all the countries in the last 60 years who seen the British monarch and honored it willingly! You should take pride in your countries dominate history! England is a wonderful country. Look at the life's Britain saved in ww2! If not for Britain the Germans would have had nuclear bombs years before America. Nobody, should EVER think little of the British. They are wonderful people.

This video is based on land area. Persia massed at it's peak 5.5 million kilometers square, which would put it as the 7th largest country in the modern day, and much lower 'of all time'.

Quite the opposite. If they rank 7th and 8th just among modern nations, then when you throw in the historical Empires like those in this video, it would push Rome down to probably around 25th place. Just looking at the first three listed in this video, you have empires sized 36 million square kilometers and two at 11 million square kilometers. Plus, Rome is often overestimated due to the Mediterranean Sea.

Well, modern Russia, Canada, China, United States, and Brazil are all larger than Rome or Persia at their peaks.
The Mongols are a different story, they had a huge empire. No modern nation matches their 24 million square kilometers, Russia being the largest at 17 million.

The mediterranean terrirories of Spain came form the crown of Aragon, which had a very powerfull economic control in the mediterranean, to the point that there was an old phrase "tots els peixos parlen català" (all the fish speaks Catalan).

We arguably still have colonies to this day. We just call them unincorporated territories. But yeah, we were definitely an empire after winning the Spanish-American war, but everyone would rather ignore that.

Maybe I missed something, but how is Portugal the first "global empire in history"? I'm pretty sure Rome spanned three continents, along with trading ports as far away as India. Rome also lasted over 1,000 years in the West, and (almost) 2,000 years in the East. I don't think the original video creator knew all the facts.
I think by global he means that they had influence in every continent in the world

to our knowledge rome did not have a colony in the new world, thus could not be considered a global empire by his standards
