- America's Revolutionary War was raging 235 years ago when Marquis de Lafayette sailed from France aboard the Navy frigate Hermione to deliver good news to his friend George Washington. On this Independence Day, a replica of the famous ship is in New York City as part of the Fourth of July celebrations. David Begnaud reports.
Remember folks we wouldn't have a country without France's help.

Wealthiest and most well connected teenagers in France decides at 19 he is going to fight for Washington although they did not want him and King Louis forbade him. So he bought his own boat and after the French navy came after him he parked in Spain and rode back to France then dressed as a woman and rode back to his ship.
When he got here he fought for free and in his first battle was wounded and still stayed to order an orderly retreat. He fed and clothed soldiers with his own money and while injured returned to France (where he was now a celeb) and secured Frances support .

it only cost 30 million to build it too. including creating the tools and fixtures and relearning all the lost arts and skills necessary. Shockingly cheap, cheap enough some low level multimillionaires could commission one and raise a crew. I would if i had the means.
Some of you may be looking at these young adults like they are just playing a role of pirates etc but they are extremely brave ,smart,clever , strong and incredibly patient sailing a boat of that size is the biggest accomplishment by far!! Great work and hundreds of selfless humans!!
Admiral DeGrasse and General Rochambeau don't get the credit they deserve here in the states, when they really were the ones, not to mention 5,500 French soldiers who won the war...
It would be amazing to see this ship and Old Ironsides sailing together even for a short trip from Boston to New York and back.

Hermione was Helen of Sparta(Troy) daughter,great name and stunning Ship.
La Fayette was in exile because he try to defend the french monarchy. He was really popular in France, enougth to try some national reconciliation with his king, but (sadly?) doesnt work.

The ship with the masts behind l'Hermione is the Wavertree, and behind the Wavertree is a lightship, the Ambrose.

The movie « the Patriot » was historically terrible, would have been amazing to have such a good movie about a real story of the war.

the hermione is preparing for its new cruise which will take place in 2022 in northern europe.
currently, you can see it in dry dock in the port of la rochelle in france and from june in the port of rochefort where you can visit it
At the moment, the frigate Hermione is back in the Arsenal des Mers, Rochefort, her home port, waiting for its next adventure! She will visit four northern European countries with four stopovers which will be all opportunities to showcase French know-how: London, Antwerp, Amsterdam and Hamburg. This trip to Europe will coincide with the French presidency of the European Union in the first half of 2022

Are the ropes made from hemp like the originals? And what about the sails? The Originals were made of hemp. Too bad the hemp industry was abolished by foolish anti drug laws decades ago. Even the first pair of blue jeans was made of hemp cloth, but we don't remember that history do we?
Fun fact the firsts blue jeans was made with french fabric, the Denim is in fact "De Nimes" (from Nimes), Nimes is a french city where the textile was made. ;)

Lafayette has embrassed the tricolore on his hat during the revolution, he was even chief of the "garde nationale" of paris during the first years of the Revolution. He was part of the Terror himself, as he ordered the firing on the poor people around the first anniversary of the "fête de la féderation", the 12 juillet 1791...
Well Lafayette was one of the revolutionaries in France and actively took part in the Reign of Terror, so while it’s not correct for the American Revolution you could argue it’s correct for Lafayette himself

No, that's exactly right, as this vessel is registered in France. It therefore carries the flag of the nation where it is registered. This is an obligation under world maritime law.

But, on the flip side, this ship's sister, La Concorde, was a Dutch-style French slaver captured by Blackbeard himself & had more cannon's added...then renamed, " Queen Anne's Revenge"! It's being salvaged off the Carolinas now. It is the same ship he was finally killed on by a British lieutenant. Beheaded, in point of fact.

"La Concorde", Hermione's sister ship, was built in April 1777 in Rochefort, France ; she was the first of its own, reason why, her name is the name of the class (Concorde-class frigate). A military class frigate, so this class was warships, not slave ships...
The ship "La Concorde", used by Blackbeard, was also built in France but in 1710. She was from an older class of frigate ships (and not a state military class). She was captured by Blackbeard in 1717.
What threw me was the build dates, but same name & country. And Blackbeard was supposed to have been beheaded by the lieutenant before 1717...

Who were you fighting in the French and Indian wars prior to the war of independence ,hmmm the French . who fought the French and Indians then the British army the redcoats with Americans .And if the French helped you it was largely as part of a geopolitical match they had with England, after the uk conquered French Canada . .Lafayette wanted Washington to invade Canada which you later tried declaring war on the uk in 1812 ,this is how the redcoats burned down your white house in retaliation for America burning down York Ontario, the invasion was unsuccessful

You're right : next time, we won't lift a finger if that's just altruism. EVERYTHING in history of men is a matter of interests. Sometimes (read "EVERY TIME"), it's good to analyse not only the main reasons but also their consequences. If France and Spain hadn't taken part in that revolutionary war, who knows what would have happened to the Thirteen Colonies ... so maybe people can be civilised, just say "thanks" and move on ?
And that's for exactly the same geopolitical interests that USA enter (nearly at the end) WW2. Not for altruism

The flag comes from the French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle. But historically it's much bigger! The size of the flag is defined by the proportions of the ship. A 74-gun therefore has a larger flag.
