FOSSE actually won Tonys for Best Musical, Best Orchestrations, and Best Lighting Design in 1999. It didn't even have a Choreography nomination.

@24:30 I just heard Stereophonic will now perform at the Tony Awards!!! @26:56 I think SIX would have won against Moulin Rouge if covid didn't happen. @37:00 I agree with Here Lies Love scenic design. @47:00 I never understood how they judge sound design. I mean we can all hear the lyrics/music I guess I just don't understand the nuances. @53:30 I agree. I loved Hell's Kitchen too but certain scenes seemed forced just to fit in certain songs. I wish it was an original score. @55:22 Hell's Kitchen and The Outsiders will be okay on the road given how both are well known IPs. Suffs, on the other hand, benefits the most with any Tony wins. @1:00:50 I wish they'd release the results/tally/votes sometime in the future after all the emotions have moved on.

No to Hell's Kitchen or Illinoise. Say no to jukebox musicals. They're lazy.

"Merrily" sweep, or near sweep. The Master and Prince Hal will be smiling from the hereafter. Brilliant analyses and predictions, all around. Each Tony cycle you two are instantly our favorite Gold Derby contributors, easily. Thank you both so much.

I don’t want Stereophonic to win score. Its nomination is its win. The cast recording is not the score. If it’s not in the play, it should not be considered.
I loved Suffs. Hoping it wins Best Musical, and Merrily Best Revival.

Thanks you both did a great job summarizing and predicting the season: thoughtful, informed and made me want to check out more theater.

I have Maleah Joi Moon in first for Best Actress in a Musical because I feel like they have to give Hell’s Kitchen, the most nominated musical at this year’s Tony’s something and her musical is still open. If Days of Wine and Roses were still open I would have Kelli O’Hara in first but I wouldn’t be upset if she won because I love Kelli but I am not confident in her winning if her musical is closed.

Illinoise is a beautiful dance concert, but the book is terrible and the singers are mush-mouthed

I tend to think of 'Illinoise' less like 'Fosse' and more like the Best Musical from the following year 'Contact.' The main controversy then was the fact that the music was pre-recorded, but that was a dance musical that told a clear, compelling story with a limited book ('Illinoise' has less of a book) and a jukebox-ish score and still beat out two musicals with original scores. But that was nearly a quarter of a century ago at this point...

Really enjoy all of your commentary + your cute faces…also really liked hearing Sam & Matt Koplik go at it on his pod. 🤞 for “Suffs”!
