Amavasya and poonima refer to new moon and full moon respectively they occur after every fortnight consecutively

Poornima also called full moon night where moon is in its complete shape and this is seen once a month while a fortnight that is 2 weeks later amavasya that is new moon night occurs where this moon disappears and the night sky is clearly seen. Its all because of moon being a natural satelite of earth revolving around the earth.
