    I learned so much from this video. I’m a TH-cam-taught watercolorist. Mixing complementary colors to desaturate is something I never really got. Nor did I know how fantastic desaturated colors look together. Thank you so much!

    What a beautiful painting! Thank you for this tutorial. I often paint on cellulose paper, and a technique I learned for making washes is very helpful for not getting drying/harsh lines. It’s called “keeping a bead”. Works best on slightly tilted paper. It means to dip the brush into the paint for every stroke so that a small ridge of wet paint collects on the lower part of the stroke. Then with your next stroke you pick up that collected paint and form a new ‘bead’ on the bottom of the stroke. That bead prevents lines from forming, even with staining colours like phthalos on cellulose paper. You have to keep going of course but it gives that bit of extra time.

    Enjoyed the color lesson. Someone may disagree with me but I had poor results on hot press 100% cotton. I’m going to try again on cold press. I’m beginning to think hot press is best suited for markers.

    • @shanacirce
      @shanacirce  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hot press is a much smoother surface and can be great for illustration and fine detail watercolor. I am not a fan of it for my style of painting but there are many who love it for their style.

    I am enjoying your folk art so much. Thank you. I have a question: do the hills have their own shadows, or are they not included in this type of painting? I love the way it looks like this. Also, are primitives considered folk art? Sorry for asking so many questions!!

    • @shanacirce
      @shanacirce  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Angie. Great questions. First, I will say that these are Folk Art inspired pieces. I’m looking at a lot of Folk Art to inform or inspire my pieces. There are also not a lot of hard and fast rules in Folk Art. There are definitely themes and a general look but traditional Folk Art is produced by self taught artists so they often made up their own rules. I’m still learning a lot about the genre. You could definitely add shadows from the hills themselves. I think that could look great. And yes, I do believe primitives are considered within the larger umbrella of Folk Art.

    • @Angie-pl3uw
      @Angie-pl3uw 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@shanacirce Thanks, Shana, for your prompt answer to my questions. I love your art as it is, I just was curious about shadows. I am interested in primitives as I am lucky to have inherited a quite beautiful and expensive primitive that my husband and I adore. I hope you continue exploring this genre. I have the title of a book that I believe you’d enjoy. It’s not at hand but will send it to you a later. Thank you again

  • @Merzui-kg8ds

    I'll chime in with a rookie question. I have (cheapish) pan watercolors. I do not quite know how to mix colors when I am loading my brush out of a pan. Seems trickier than having tube watercolors. Am I confused?

    • @shanacirce
      @shanacirce  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Do you have another surface to mix your colors on? Even if you don’t have a separate palette sometimes you can mix in the lid of your pan set or you can use a ceramic plate from your kitchen. Activate your paints with water and mix them on the palette( plate ) before you use them.

    what's the thing that you used to roll away the drawn lines? is it some type of eraser?

    • @shanacirce
      @shanacirce  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there! That’s called a kneaded eraser. You can get them from any art store or online. They are excellent for erasing lines on watercolor paper.
