Most underrated composer of the 20th century... Why do symphony orchestras perform yet another dreary version of Beethoven's 4th symphony when they could perform this???

I wonder the same why PBS classical station virtually never play anything by Szymanowski, Martinu, etc.

+SpaghettiToaster I get your point but I think ghostwriter11 is making the point about orchestras playing the same narrow repertoire (with some exceptions) instead of widening their programmes to include many great neglected 20thc works that would gain a wide audience if they had the opportunity of hearing them.

Unfortunately Beethoven puts bums on seats and money in coffers. Szymanowski doesn't and neither do Martinu, Roussel, Bax, and many other superb but neglected composers.

Absolutely the point. Thankfully many great contemporary and other 20 C composers are being recorded by some great musicians and in many cases excellent and truly listenable readings are being given. I could start a list, but it would be a long one; suffice to say: Such as this one!
At least we can hear them even if not in the concert hall.

      27. January, we'll play this in KKL in Luzern (Switzerland), so I guess someone heard your prayers :)

I've watched to this symphony for the first time yesterday, live with the Philharmonic Orchestra of Minas Gerais, Brazil. It's a genial work which cannot be absorbed just by a first listening. Szymanowski makes an amazing connection between percussion, piano, harp and the rest of the orchestra! It was indispensable to watch it live and to see how the musical construction flows and how the musicians work hard! Brawo! Dziękuję!

The painting is called "Nova aurigae". It is by the Polish artist and writer Stanislaw Witkiewicz, who was a close friend of Szymanowski (as well as Bronislaw Malinowski, interestingly enough).

The style of this very beautiful symphony is less complex than the style of masterworks of the "middle period" of Szymanowski, such as Metopes, Myths, 3rd Symphony.

This composer has always interested me as an alternative to the typical Neo-Classic or ultra modern.

Thanks for uploading one of my favorite pieces by Szymanowski. If I could make one correction, this is his opus 60, not 27.

It looks like a pastel rather than an oil painting. Didn't Witkiewicz do quite a lot of his work in pastel?
