I was in high school when this song was popular, and it was one of my favs from this era. From my older siblings, I also had a good introduction of music from the 70s and was also introduced to the Beatles. I was surprised to learn just in the last few years that this was actually a remake. Surprised, I never knew this wasn't the original.

That's exactly what makes the 80's so excited in music. Bands sounds different even all were rock bands. The music had so many different variations: soft rock, hard rock, metal, heavy metal, trash, pop, punk, power ballads, R & B, New wave. 80's was the decade when bands were creating music all the time. So many bands born in this decade. It was a privelege for me to be a college young man and experienced all i mentioned. It was so much fun. There concerts everywhere. My favorite were all those covers' bands at summer festivals at the Beach. Awesome!!!!

Originally done as a demo by Dionne Warwick in 1963, this song first chanted by Lou Johnson in the summer of 1964, Sandi Shaw's version reached No. 1 in the UK in November 1964 and was the first version of the song I heard. It charted in other countries too but only reached No. 52 in the US. (Johnson's reached No. 49). R.B. Greaves recorded the song in 1970 and it reached No 27 on the music charts. It was 20 years after the song was composed that Naked Eyes did their version, which made the top 10 in the US!

New Wave Brits were heavily influenced by 60s Soul. Sandie Shaw sung a popular version of this song in '65.
Soft Cell did covers of "Tainted Love/Where Did Our Love Go?", and "What?"
Bow Wow Wow covered "I Want Candy"
The English Beat covered "The Tears of a Clown"
    Billy Idol covered "Mony Mony"
    Etc. ...

Yeah this would have been included in New Wave and even Post Punk - It is also VERY British- it also has a Ska/Reggae backbeat not found in the original Bacharach version.

When you mix a 60s pop song with British synth-pop, it's hard to go wrong. A lot of 80s UK artists found hits by digging into the catalogs of US artists from previous decades.

As far as somebody who was in High School in the Early 80s,( me), we really didn't care what genre our music was. If it sounded good we listened to it. From the Bee Gees to Sinatra, Aerosmith to Billy Joel and all the 1 hit wonders in between. We partied to anything, including country on rare occaisions. Charlie Daniels Band, Gatlin Brothers, Oak Ridge Boys, Dolly, Reba, Tanya. Good music is good music. Period.😁

Thanks for this reaction. I've always liked this song a lot! And Yeah, I'd agree with others 100%, this definitely falls into the "New Wave" bucket, for sure, new wave essentially being the post-punk, sub-genre of the late70's/early 80's, influenced by any number of the prevailing genres of the time (punk, synth-pop, reggae, rock, funk, r&b, etc.) But here's my own impression of new wave music. The songs could often be characterized as a tiny bit drab, stylistically woven in melodic but melancholy over/(under)tones, and they were often electronically-based and surprisingly danceable. Also, as someone below suggested, the songs often had slightly deeper meanings than more conventional pop/rock songs, or, perhaps said differently, less overt messages.

I'm pretty sure the original was a hit in 1964, recorded by Lou Johnson for the Burt Bacharach album "The Look of Love". I found this statement: [[(There's) Always Something There To Remind Me" was first performed by Lou Johnson in 1964. The most well-known remakes are those of Sandie Shaw (1965), Dionne Warwick (1967), R. B. Greaves (1970), and Naked Eyes (1982)]]. Funny, 1964 is the year I was born (!!), but the Naked Eyes version is the one I know and love, being a bit hit in 1983 and taking me back to the fun days during my first year of college 😊.

I read on Wikipedia that Naked Eyes with Pete and his now fellow band member never toured in their heyday because the sound was so complex. I saw Naked Eyes with just Pete as his fellow band member had passed by that time and he did a terrific job. Naked Eyes is a talented band and their driving force Pete Byrne deserves a lot of credit keeping the music going these days.

Hi, you've reached Ground Zero of the 1980s. Here, the Eighty-ness of these Eighties has perhaps 10x more Eighties than can possibly be Eightied. Seriously, when I think of my 80s adolescence, it's this song above all others. I didn't know one girl who didn't love it, which meant I had to find some way to endure it. In the next decade, it was Jamiroquai, which was easy because they were funky as hell. :)

The British groups hit us in the 80s like a ton of bricks with so many sounds and the song writers...Wow! The songs were great. I wish they would drop this stupid American music and let this British music come back. We have a few good singers but I miss the songs from Great Britain and the European influence
