I know this is old, but I have mad respect for you doing this type of video review for all these kayaks when you don't even sell these particular brands/models. You're just a true enthusiast/ambassador of the sport! One kayak that should definitely be part of this group is the Perception Striker 11.5. Now, although this kayak is $600+ at Dick's, at other big box stores (like Academy Sports, Ray Marine, etc.) it can be had for as cheap as $450. It's a very stable kayak with high/lo seats (very primitive and unpadded), but it has a great deck layout and a true 500lb capacity. I actually have one of these as my lake kayak in Virginia, and it's great. It would be an excellent addition to your cheap fleet for bigger people. With that type of capacity, it's also very possible (and easy) to motorize.

Thanks for doing all the hard work for me. I purchased the Tamarack 100 for $250 from Walmart today. Was able to get 2 hours on the water today after work. Didn’t catch any fish but really enjoyed the kayak. It’s much easier to handle than my Dagger Reflection 14 that I’ve loved for many years. But the canoe has just gotten too heavy for me in my golden years. I can sling the Tamerack around pretty easy. Great reviews.
Just picked up 2 pescador 120's. Got them from a local rental company that sells their rental fleet every year. Picked them up for $300 each. Cant wait to take them out in the intercoastal for some flats fishing Be sure to check and support your local stores. Great vid and cheers from South Florida.

Took your advice and bought the Lifetime Tamarack and it was perfect for my part of Lake Allatoona . Found a beautiful creek right out of Jurassic Park. Two days later a low life cut the security cable and stole it. The real drag is I bought three cables but the larger cables do not fit the small holes on the Yak. Thanks for the great tip on an entry boat.

Just found your channel! I am a first time buyer of a yak. I am a casual fisher so I wanted to get something I wanted to fish off of. I also am on somewhat of a budget and couldn't fork out a grand for a boat because I wanted to add some things to it. I also knew that I had to get a good paddle. Based on this video I chose the Pescador 12. I went with this boat because I am a bigger guy and I wanted something that would last me a while. Thanks for this! Looking forward to getting out on the water soon.
Own 2 Lifetime Tamarack for a couple years now. In July the roof rack came loose and both Kayaks hit the highway at 60+ MPH. Barely a scratch! Both in tact. I bought 4-piece paddles, self inflating life vests because regular ones were in my face. scufffer plugs and 11/2" pad made out of material of pool noodles. The seat could be sheet of packing material but makes a GREAT seat. Cost $ 0.00 Anchor is Walmart 1.5 lb. Plenty of weight for me. Anchor system was easy upgrade. I load the whole camp on this Kayak. Side handles are well balanced to lift kayak over your head for loading.

If you're little like me 5'5 120 the pelican and the swifty which I have both are comfy and go pretty good through the water. I know kinda kicks your business in the shins but I feel like if you're small when it comes to flat water kayaking paddle matters more than the kayak as long as it's not the bottom of the barrel big box store kayak. I've had the pelican for four maybe five years and nothing has broke on it. The bungees have lost a little pop but they still do their job. I use them both multiple times a week in the summer months and go hours at a time each trip. I stow them in my shed out of the sun. Living on water has taught me keeping your water stuff stored out of the sun and elements extends their life a lot.
I just got a Lifetime Tamarak 100 angler this past weekend. I have not had it out on water yet due to days of Rainy weather here on Gulf Coast Of Mississippi. Thanks for the video and the info It helped me make my choice to buy this one.

I've been looking for a starter to cruise around in south of Tampa. I'm not an angler yet, but was looking at the perception 9.5 and now looking at the tamarack. For all around and ability to add on, also for the sailboat when I get another one 😂. Like you pointed out it looks like a good base to build out how you want to use it. Thanks for the video.
I saw a Tamarac at my local Walmart today. $330. Strong price and it looks like a nice boat. I also looked at the the Teton (10ft) and the Teton Pro (11.5ft) at Dick's and sat in the Pro. They'd drop the $650 down 10% for the shipping scratch in it and it is really tempting. The bigger kayak seemed like it would be the better fit for me at 220 lbs. and my 80 lb. dog. Even with that skag wheel, not sure I want to be moving a 75 lb. kayak around. Decisions, decisions. Love your videos!!!

I want to get a kayak very soon. I'm trying to decide between a more recreational style kayak like the Pelican Mustang you mentioned in your less than 300 video or the Lifetime Tamarack. You are 100% right on the importance of the paddle. I'm six foot one, and only 160 pounds. The swifty is pretty fast for someone of my size. I have the older version of it. mine is over twelve years old.

I have been looking at the Perception Pescador 12 when your review popped up. I was impressed that you only had one bad to say about the Perception Pescador 10. My son and I are SCUBA divers and thought that kayaks would be a great way to get out to deeper dive sites. We would be wearing neoprene wetsuits, so the padding on the seat would not be something that we would probably notice. We are not able to head over to Headwaters Kayak since we are in North Dakota, but that was a Like and Subscribe. If we are ever in the area, we will stop by the shop.
Tamarack for the win! I did exactly what you spoke of last year. Kept mines for a year and sold it for 150 and upgraded to a vibe seaghost 110. As a matter of fact it was your video last year that sold me on the vibe.

I guess I'm lucky just watched your first video today and commented and hours later boom the 2nd part. So my friends have kayaks and asking me to get one also. They own the bass pro ones ascend 12t, and I was walking into wal mart the other day and saw the lifetime tamarack as i was walking in. I was thinking that would be a good one to start with as I've seen a few others that are much more expensive I like more. but thought these were a good bang for the buck. Your video helped make up my mind. thanks.

As happy owner of the Tamarack and original paddle, I wanted leave a review for those looking to get into the hobby at an affordable price point. The Paddle I truly love his videos, and have learned so much about kayaking from him... but after paddling with this paddle for about 50 hours, I have to disagree with the harshness against the Lifetime paddle. Before buying my kayak in 2022, I had always rented kayaks every time I wanted to go out and I've kayaked in a fair number of different kayak models and using a range of different paddles... and I have to say that the Lifetime paddle has proven to be as good or better than any other paddle I've ever used. It's very light, which has proven to be very important in how tired my arms feel after a few hours of paddling, and the design (length, width, and curvature) of the blades allow for good grip and thrust in the water both forward and backwards, and overall feels stiff enough that I don't feel like I'm losing any thrust due to flexing. The paddle is noticeably lighter than any rental paddle I've ever used, and as I've gone to a few stores shopping for another paddle I've been disappointed by the heavier weight of the paddles I've run across. I weighed my Lifetime Paddle and it weighs only 28 ounces. For example, the $75 Bending Branches Whisper is 37 ounces... over 30% heavier! The paddle also tracks true in the water and I've experienced zero flutter with this paddle. It has some unique grooves in the blades that I bet help with this. I've paddled about 50 hours with this paddle, and in terms of durability, I haven't felt any flexing of the shaft or experienced anything that would make me fear it breaking on me while out. Everything on the paddle is still as straight and tight as the day I bought it. I will say the shaft IS thin and thinner than any paddle I've used, but that's probably where it gets it's lightness from and it's strong enough for anything I've used it for. It also has TWO rivets holding each blade to the shaft that are still like new. In addition to flat water and inshore ocean kayaking, I do a lot of very shallow water exploring and have run aground many times having to push myself back out with the paddle against dirt, mud, and rocks... and again have never feared breaking the paddle shaft or blades while doing so. I do have two complaints about the Lifetime Paddle... First, is that it does FEEL and LOOK cheap, so I can see how it's easy to dismiss it without putting hours on it. At the point where the two halves join, there is some jiggle if you were to hold it in the air and jiggle it... but I don't actually notice the play in the shaft when actually paddling. I think the torque being applied to the shaft during a stroke keeps tension in the shaft and prevents the jiggle. Also, although the blades have proven to be durable and a good design, the thickness, texture, and color of the plastic they are made of make them look cheap. The painted gloss of the shaft also adds to this... But I'd rather have a paddle that performs great than one that looks great but doesn't perform well. Second, for the width of the Tamarack, I think the paddle might be better matched if it were longer... and that's the ONLY reason I've been interested in trying out a new one. Some of the places I go exploring, a shorter paddle is really needed, but when traveling across open waters, I have wondered how I might like the different angle of using a longer paddle with this kayak. The Kayak As I mentioned, I've used a number of different brands and models of kayaks having always rented and I have been really impressed by the comfort and performance of the Tamarack. It's such a great blend of speed, stability, and comfort. I really like the hard back seat vs the nylon seats that so many other kayaks use. There really is no comparison between the Lifetime seat and the common standard nylon seats found on Amazon. The taller and hard plastic backrest make such a huge difference in making the experience more comfortable. In addition, the base of the seat (where your butt actually lays) is really wide and comfortably shaped. It sits a few inches higher than the bottom of the inside of the kayak so you stay dry... I have been in other kayaks where your butt gets soaked from the seat being at the waterline inside the kayak. Because the seat base sits higher, the scupper holes behind the seat don't take on any water for me. I have severe sciatic pain when sitting in a traditional seat and the low profile (legs straight out instead of L-shaped) makes this kayak comfortable (a stadium seat WOULD NOT be good for me). I also have plenty of room to comfortably cross my legs and sit Indian style as I paddle which I sometimes need to do for the pain I get, and I feel completely planted and the kayak feels completely stable paddling crossed legged Indian style. The kayak also tracks very well on the water only shifting a couple of inches left or right with each thrust and goes straight when I stop. I've kayaked in some pretty decent wind in the ocean bay with chop and I had no problem keeping it going straight. It glides through the water pretty well given it's width and I really feel like it's such a nice balance between speed, stability, tracking and comfort. I haven't rented any kayaks that even come close as an all around kayak as this. I have been in some faster kayaks, but they were not nearly as stable, very wet, or not nearly as comfortable. I bought the Kayak from Walmart in 2022 for $261+tax. The actual model I bought is the Tahoma as the cheapest Tamarack was $329 at the time, and I didn't like the color of the cheapest Tamarack (Recon Fusion) ( www.walmart.com/ip/Lifetime-Tamarack-Angler-10-ft-Fishing-Kayak-Paddle-Included-90508/936710397 ), but I loved the color of the Tahoma I bought (Volcano Red) ( www.walmart.com/ip/Lifetime-Tahoma-10-ft-Sit-On-Top-Kayak-Paddle-Included/437634290 ). I believe it is the exact same hull as the Tamarack... but without the seat pad, rod holders, and bucket in the storage hatch. It was a super cheap way to get me started with my own without having to rent anymore. $13 for two flush mount rod holders from Amazon + $15 for the hatch bucket + $10 for a yoga pad I cut up and made a nice 3-layer seat pad (better than the stock pad) and I almost have a Tamarack Angler (minus the fixed mounted rod holder, which I didn't want anyway) for $299. But, after another $25 or so for an anchor trolley + another $13 for two more flush mount rod holders + $34 for two Yakattack 12" Mighty Mount rails, I now have a tricked out, fun, comfortable, maneuverable, easy to get into tight spaces, straight tracking kayak with 4 rod holders and dual accessory rails for $371. I am a happy dude. One improvement that could be made (which Lifetime does have a solution for) is if it had adjustable foot rests. The molded foot rests are nice because they are simple and there's nothing to break, but molded pedals on every kayak I've been on are small only giving about half a foot or so of space to press against. Adjustable pedals will likely give you a wider platform to press against with your feet and may have you feeling better dialed into the kayak. Lifetime has a Tamarack Pro with this feature for $428 + $100 shipping at Walmart ( www.walmart.com/ip/Lifetime-Tamarack-Pro-10-Ft-3-In-Kayak-Paddle-Included-91058/131436435 ). If I could say anything negative about the Kayak... It does get a tiny bit of water inside the hull after a day out, so I wouldn't put clothes or something I don't want wet in the hull. Maybe you guys can chime in if this is normal or not... I always rented before so I never checked on this and most of them all had completely sealed hulls with no hatches. I'm not sure where it comes from, but think it might be from on top somewhere that the water gets in because one time when I returned from a trip, it started raining hard so I left it outside for the day and the next day I washed it down hard with the hose and there were several cups of water inside, not just a few tablespoons... I could hear water sloshing around inside. But when I take it out on the water, I only get a tiny bit... nothing enough for me to worry about or affect the performance. I've actually never had that much water inside again since that one time. Maybe I didn't have the hatch sealed properly when I hosed it down real good. I had a specific requirement for a sit-on-top due to my sciatic pain and needing to shift around and cross my legs. There are so many different kayaks for different uses and each one has its best use, but if you're looking for a good, all-around, starter, recreational paddling kayak that you can do some light fishing on, you can't go wrong with the Tamarack. If you're interested in one with a framed seat that sits above the deck, I would recommend the Lifetime Tamarack Pro ($428 + $100 shipping at Walmart) ( www.walmart.com/ip/Lifetime-Tamarack-Pro-10-Ft-3-In-Kayak-Paddle-Included-91058/131436435 ) or the Tamarack Teton ($479 at Dick's) ( www.dickssportinggoods.com/p/lifetime-teton-100-angler-kayak-19lifuttnnglrxxxxpsk/19lifuttnnglrxxxxpsk ). If you can spend a bit more for a hull that is similar with a framed seat, but might paddle better... I would encourage you to check out the Crescent Ultralight ($849) ( www.crescentkayaks.com/product/ultralite-fishing-kayak/ ). Best wishes to everyone!

Need your good advice on a inflatable fishing kayak for the Puget Sound. Would like a tandem to fish and bring back a crab pot for seniors to manage to water and back home. Requires 50lbs or less to carry and very stable.
Good reviews, Dan. Bought my 11 yr old grandson a Pelican 100 Apex Angler at Academy last yr for $349 as I recall. A sturdy, stable rig for his size, and I added some upgrades (bow bungee, centerline Railblaza rod holder, & a 6" hatch with cat bag in front of the seat. Also bought a Yakgear seat pad to enhance the less-than-stellar "seat" that comes with the rig. Not a dry ride due to scuppers directly under the seat, so used some foam practice golf balls as scupper plugs. No water intrusion now! :) Still looking for a better, light-weight paddle with smaller diameter handle to fit his hands.

Excellent review. Always nice to see a good honest man who is on point in his field of work/play. I purchased my first kayak the Perception Pescador 10' today for only $400 on sale at Academy Sports. (Only the red one is on sale at that price and sale ends today). I wanted a really sturdy kayak body because I do a lot of river floats (always rented previously). The rivers I go on tend to have some rough areas with boulders or logs that are not completely avoidable. As for fitting in it, I'm 6'4 so I simply removed the foot pegs and swapped out the bungee for the seat. At 235lbs with my 40lb pibble on board I'm hoping its really good to 325lbs. Would be nice to be able to have fishing poles too. I think I will get the whisper paddle you suggested. I'm all about sneaking up on the fish. I have not even had this on the water yet and I had a crazy idea... What about coating the bottom and sides of a kayak with a LineX or Rhino lining? Would it make it sturdier? Too heavy? Will it just come off? This could make for a good video for you to do.

Nice video...I went with the Swifty because they threw all kayaks on sale and my wife found an extra 20% off....ended up getting paddle, PFD and an anchor trolley kit for about 250 bucks. It isn't the swiftest boat on the water, but it definitely does the trick. Added a crate with rod holders because the molded in "holders" are pretty much useless. All in all...pretty happy with the boat.
I got the pelican with a seat upgrade and Scotty mounts on both sides for 400$ and I love it. Troll for trout n bass hit ponds rivers its light and versatile. It's my first so I'll have to try a paddle upgrade but I've never had a problem with it

That Eagle looks sharp with the pointed bow and it looks like the seat rests against the back of the cockpit giving a lot of support. Being a bit lighter at 180 pounds I probably wouldn't notice the flex as much.
Dan, another great video! I love the way you promote the sport even when it isn't to your advantage financially. It's a great way to build your customer base. I have a pair of Tamarack Anglers that I got around Christmas time for under $200 each. As you said, that was about the cost of a weekend rental, and they're not rentals. I know the stock paddle is cheap, and want to replace it, but I'm waiting until I can get up to Lodi to get new ones from you. I like the ones you suggested in the $60 to $70 range. I was convinced that I should get a better paddle after your paddle video with Chris came out. I am looking forward to your Tamarack Angler build. I expect you'll be gearing it toward the lower end of the market, using budget components to go along with the low cost of the kayak. I've done a few things to one of my kayaks and plan to modify the other one in a similar way. There are a lot of videos on TH-cam showing mods that others have done. I like Mobbin's idea about stocking the Tamarack. Perhaps you could build a budget fishing package (including kayak mods) that would get someone on the water for around $500, with more features than anything else in that price range. Another option would be to sell a package deal for someone to upgrade the kayak they bought at the big box store... Perhaps a paddle, seat, crate, and anchor trolley package...

I have the lifetime tamarack angler as well. It's my 1st kayak. I bought it for bass fishing, but ended up using it to just kayak around for pleasure. I hate fishing out of it, mainly because I use spinnerbaits and with that, the kayak gets pulled in the direction I am reeling from. It is great for the price as well as for a beginner, but for bass fishing, I'd pass.

I purchased the pelican from Costco and you are right the seat is junk but for $15.00 you can purchase a stadium seat and makes all the difference in comfort. I live in the Central Valley and will eventually will up grade and come see your shop. Love your videos keep up the good work. Roy

Not a fishing kayak but I got the perception conduit 13 for $500 and it is really nice. Fast and lots of dry storage. I do river trips about 30 miles a day in it.

Great video and you don't even sell any of the boats you reviewed??? Have you lost your mind??? Lol. My wife and I have been looking into buying kayaks for a few weeks. We've owned Bobcat pirogues, she since '93, me since '79. They are basically bare hulls, no seat but we've had a lot of fun in them. We're getting older and looking for just a bit more comfort. I've thought since starting the search, that it would be great if stores had a way to allow customers to test the boat they are interested in. Then here you are, renting yaks, which allows your customers to test your yaks! Too bad you're waayyy out in Lodi and I'm in Louisiana.

I am new to kayak fishing, after taking a 9 year break from fishing. I looked and looked at entry level kayaks to see if I am going to enjoy it. I ended up picking up 2 of the Sun Dolphin SS 10's to get the wife and I in the water. If we like the kayak fishing we will definitely be picking up better kayaks ( probably bonafide's new RS117 ). Just wanted to say I have enjoyed your content as I have been researching kayaks. Made a subscriber out of me.
Thank you for these video's. I appreciate them as I'm sure many others in my situation do. I have no local shop within 200 miles of where I live so my only option is a big box store like Dick's or Cabella's. Also being on a very tight budget your video's are helping me decide what to look for, what I need, and what is best bang for buck in a lower price mark budget. Keep them up.
I know this is old, but I have mad respect for you doing this type of video review for all these kayaks when you don't even sell these particular brands/models. You're just a true enthusiast/ambassador of the sport!
One kayak that should definitely be part of this group is the Perception Striker 11.5. Now, although this kayak is $600+ at Dick's, at other big box stores (like Academy Sports, Ray Marine, etc.) it can be had for as cheap as $450. It's a very stable kayak with high/lo seats (very primitive and unpadded), but it has a great deck layout and a true 500lb capacity. I actually have one of these as my lake kayak in Virginia, and it's great. It would be an excellent addition to your cheap fleet for bigger people. With that type of capacity, it's also very possible (and easy) to motorize.

Thanks for doing all the hard work for me. I purchased the Tamarack 100 for $250 from Walmart today. Was able to get 2 hours on the water today after work. Didn’t catch any fish but really enjoyed the kayak. It’s much easier to handle than my Dagger Reflection 14 that I’ve loved for many years. But the canoe has just gotten too heavy for me in my golden years. I can sling the Tamerack around pretty easy. Great reviews.
Just picked up 2 pescador 120's. Got them from a local rental company that sells their rental fleet every year. Picked them up for $300 each. Took your advice and bought the Lifetime Tamarack and it was perfect for my part of Lake Allatoona . Found a beautiful creek right out of Jurassic Park. Two days later a low life cut the security cable and stole it. The real drag is I bought three cables but the larger cables do not fit the small holes on the Yak. Thanks for the great tip on an entry boat.

Just found your channel! I am a first time buyer of a yak. I am a casual fisher so I wanted to get something I wanted to fish off of. I also am on somewhat of a budget and couldn't fork out a grand for a boat because I wanted to add some things to it. I also knew that I had to get a good paddle. Based on this video I chose the Pescador 12. I went with this boat because I am a bigger guy and I wanted something that would last me a while. Thanks for this! Own 2 Lifetime Tamarack for a couple years now. In July the roof rack came loose and both Kayaks hit the highway at 60+ MPH. Barely a scratch! Both in tact. I bought 4-piece paddles, self inflating life vests because regular ones were in my face. scufffer plugs and 11/2" pad made out of material of pool noodles. The seat could be sheet of packing material but makes a GREAT seat. Cost $ 0.00 Anchor is Walmart 1.5 lb. Plenty of weight for me. Anchor system was easy upgrade. I load the whole camp on this Kayak. Side handles are well balanced to lift kayak over your head for loading.

If you're little like me 5'5 120 the pelican and the swifty which I have both are comfy and go pretty good through the water. I know kinda kicks your business in the shins but I feel like if you're small when it comes to flat water kayaking paddle matters more than the kayak as long as it's not the bottom of the barrel big box store kayak. I've had the pelican for four maybe five years and nothing has broke on it. The bungees have lost a little pop but they still do their job. I use them both multiple times a week in the summer months and go hours at a time each trip. I stow them in my shed out of the sun. Living on water has taught me keeping your water stuff stored out of the sun and elements extends their life a lot.
This is my first season. I Kayak every weekend. My first and most favorite is the Tamarack. I have 2 of those. And 3 other ones. Yes. I'm hooked.
I just got a Lifetime Tamarak 100 angler this past weekend. I have not had it out on water yet due to days of Rainy weather here on Gulf Coast Of Mississippi. Thanks for the video and the info It helped me make my choice to buy this one.

I've been looking for a starter to cruise around in south of Tampa. I'm not an angler yet, but was looking at the perception 9.5 and now looking at the tamarack. For all around and ability to add on, also for the sailboat when I get another one 😂. Like you pointed out it looks like a good base to build out how you want to use it. Thanks for the video.

I saw a Tamarac at my local Walmart today. $330. Strong price and it looks like a nice boat. I also looked at the the Teton (10ft) and the Teton Pro (11.5ft) at Dick's and sat in the Pro. They'd drop the $650 down 10% for the shipping scratch in it and it is really tempting. The bigger kayak seemed like it would be the better fit for me at 220 lbs. and my 80 lb. dog. Even with that skag wheel, not sure I want to be moving a 75 lb. kayak around. Decisions, decisions. Love your videos!!!

You are 100% right on the importance of the paddle. I'm six foot one, and only 160 pounds. The swifty is pretty fast for someone of my size. I have the older version of it. mine is over twelve years old.

I have been looking at the Perception Pescador 12 when your review popped up. I was impressed that you only had one bad to say about the Perception Pescador 10. My son and I are SCUBA divers and thought that kayaks would be a great way to get out to deeper dive sites. We would be wearing neoprene wetsuits, so the padding on the seat would not be something that we would probably notice. We are not able to head over to Headwaters Kayak since we are in North Dakota, but that was a Like and Subscribe. If we are ever in the area, we will stop by the shop.

They own the bass pro ones ascend 12t, and I was walking into wal mart the other day and saw the lifetime tamarack as i was walking in. I was thinking that would be a good one to start with as I've seen a few others that are much more expensive I like more. but thought these were a good bang for the buck. Awesome review. I have really been enjoying your videos. You come across well and seem to give an honest opinion on the products. A great example being your comments regarding the Lifetime kayak. I bought the non-angler version as a Black Friday deal, as you said, to get on the water and get into the sport. I have spent a little to trick it out and have made it a decent angling kayak. As happy owner of the Tamarack and original paddle, I wanted leave a review for those looking to get into the hobby at an affordable price point.
The Paddle
I truly love his videos, and have learned so much about kayaking from him... but after paddling with this paddle for about 50 hours, I have to disagree with the harshness against the Lifetime paddle. Before buying my kayak in 2022, I had always rented kayaks every time I wanted to go out and I've kayaked in a fair number of different kayak models and using a range of different paddles... and I have to say that the Lifetime paddle has proven to be as good or better than any other paddle I've ever used.
It's very light, which has proven to be very important in how tired my arms feel after a few hours of paddling, and the design (length, width, and curvature) of the blades allow for good grip and thrust in the water both forward and backwards, and overall feels stiff enough that I don't feel like I'm losing any thrust due to flexing.
The paddle is noticeably lighter than any rental paddle I've ever used, and as I've gone to a few stores shopping for another paddle I've been disappointed by the heavier weight of the paddles I've run across. I weighed my Lifetime Paddle and it weighs only 28 ounces. For example, the $75 Bending Branches Whisper is 37 ounces... over 30% heavier!
The paddle also tracks true in the water and I've experienced zero flutter with this paddle. It has some unique grooves in the blades that I bet help with this.
I've paddled about 50 hours with this paddle, and in terms of durability, I haven't felt any flexing of the shaft or experienced anything that would make me fear it breaking on me while out.
Everything on the paddle is still as straight and tight as the day I bought it. I will say the shaft IS thin and thinner than any paddle I've used, but that's probably where it gets it's lightness from and it's strong enough for anything I've used it for. It also has TWO rivets holding each blade to the shaft that are still like new.
In addition to flat water and inshore ocean kayaking, I do a lot of very shallow water exploring and have run aground many times having to push myself back out with the paddle against dirt, mud, and rocks... and again have never feared breaking the paddle shaft or blades while doing so.
I do have two complaints about the Lifetime Paddle... First, is that it does FEEL and LOOK cheap, so I can see how it's easy to dismiss it without putting hours on it.
At the point where the two halves join, there is some jiggle if you were to hold it in the air and jiggle it... but I don't actually notice the play in the shaft when actually paddling. I think the torque being applied to the shaft during a stroke keeps tension in the shaft and prevents the jiggle.
Also, although the blades have proven to be durable and a good design, the thickness, texture, and color of the plastic they are made of make them look cheap. The painted gloss of the shaft also adds to this... But I'd rather have a paddle that performs great than one that looks great but doesn't perform well.
Second, for the width of the Tamarack, I think the paddle might be better matched if it were longer... and that's the ONLY reason I've been interested in trying out a new one. Some of the places I go exploring, a shorter paddle is really needed, but when traveling across open waters, I have wondered how I might like the different angle of using a longer paddle with this kayak.
The Kayak
As I mentioned, I've used a number of different brands and models of kayaks having always rented and I have been really impressed by the comfort and performance of the Tamarack. It's such a great blend of speed, stability, and comfort. I really like the hard back seat vs the nylon seats that so many other kayaks use. There really is no comparison between the Lifetime seat and the common standard nylon seats found on Amazon. The taller and hard plastic backrest make such a huge difference in making the experience more comfortable.
In addition, the base of the seat (where your butt actually lays) is really wide and comfortably shaped. It sits a few inches higher than the bottom of the inside of the kayak so you stay dry... I have been in other kayaks where your butt gets soaked from the seat being at the waterline inside the kayak. Because the seat base sits higher, the scupper holes behind the seat don't take on any water for me.
I have severe sciatic pain when sitting in a traditional seat and the low profile (legs straight out instead of L-shaped) makes this kayak comfortable (a stadium seat WOULD NOT be good for me).
I also have plenty of room to comfortably cross my legs and sit Indian style as I paddle which I sometimes need to do for the pain I get, and I feel completely planted and the kayak feels completely stable paddling crossed legged Indian style.
The kayak also tracks very well on the water only shifting a couple of inches left or right with each thrust and goes straight when I stop. I've kayaked in some pretty decent wind in the ocean bay with chop and I had no problem keeping it going straight.
It glides through the water pretty well given it's width and I really feel like it's such a nice balance between speed, stability, tracking and comfort. I haven't rented any kayaks that even come close as an all around kayak as this. I have been in some faster kayaks, but they were not nearly as stable, very wet, or not nearly as comfortable.
I bought the Kayak from Walmart in 2022 for $261+tax. The actual model I bought is the Tahoma as the cheapest Tamarack was $329 at the time, and I didn't like the color of the cheapest Tamarack (Recon Fusion) ( www.walmart.com/ip/Lifetime-Tamarack-Angler-10-ft-Fishing-Kayak-Paddle-Included-90508/936710397 ), but I loved the color of the Tahoma I bought (Volcano Red) ( www.walmart.com/ip/Lifetime-Tahoma-10-ft-Sit-On-Top-Kayak-Paddle-Included/437634290 ). I believe it is the exact same hull as the Tamarack... but without the seat pad, rod holders, and bucket in the storage hatch.
It was a super cheap way to get me started with my own without having to rent anymore.
$13 for two flush mount rod holders from Amazon + $15 for the hatch bucket + $10 for a yoga pad I cut up and made a nice 3-layer seat pad (better than the stock pad) and I almost have a Tamarack Angler (minus the fixed mounted rod holder, which I didn't want anyway) for $299.
But, after another $25 or so for an anchor trolley + another $13 for two more flush mount rod holders + $34 for two Yakattack 12" Mighty Mount rails, I now have a tricked out, fun, comfortable, maneuverable, easy to get into tight spaces, straight tracking kayak with 4 rod holders and dual accessory rails for $371.
I am a happy dude.
One improvement that could be made (which Lifetime does have a solution for) is if it had adjustable foot rests. The molded foot rests are nice because they are simple and there's nothing to break, but molded pedals on every kayak I've been on are small only giving about half a foot or so of space to press against. Adjustable pedals will likely give you a wider platform to press against with your feet and may have you feeling better dialed into the kayak.
Lifetime has a Tamarack Pro with this feature for $428 + $100 shipping at Walmart ( www.walmart.com/ip/Lifetime-Tamarack-Pro-10-Ft-3-In-Kayak-Paddle-Included-91058/131436435 ).
If I could say anything negative about the Kayak... It does get a tiny bit of water inside the hull after a day out, so I wouldn't put clothes or something I don't want wet in the hull. Maybe you guys can chime in if this is normal or not... I always rented before so I never checked on this and most of them all had completely sealed hulls with no hatches.
I'm not sure where it comes from, but think it might be from on top somewhere that the water gets in because one time when I returned from a trip, it started raining hard so I left it outside for the day and the next day I washed it down hard with the hose and there were several cups of water inside, not just a few tablespoons... I could hear water sloshing around inside.
But when I take it out on the water, I only get a tiny bit... nothing enough for me to worry about or affect the performance. I've actually never had that much water inside again since that one time. Maybe I didn't have the hatch sealed properly when I hosed it down real good.
I had a specific requirement for a sit-on-top due to my sciatic pain and needing to shift around and cross my legs.
There are so many different kayaks for different uses and each one has its best use, but if you're looking for a good, all-around, starter, recreational paddling kayak that you can do some light fishing on, you can't go wrong with the Tamarack.
If you're interested in one with a framed seat that sits above the deck, I would recommend the Lifetime Tamarack Pro ($428 + $100 shipping at Walmart) ( www.walmart.com/ip/Lifetime-Tamarack-Pro-10-Ft-3-In-Kayak-Paddle-Included-91058/131436435 ) or the Tamarack Teton ($479 at Dick's) ( www.dickssportinggoods.com/p/lifetime-teton-100-angler-kayak-19lifuttnnglrxxxxpsk/19lifuttnnglrxxxxpsk ). If you can spend a bit more for a hull that is similar with a framed seat, but might paddle better... I would encourage you to check out the Crescent Ultralight ($849) ( www.crescentkayaks.com/product/ultralite-fishing-kayak/ ).

Good reviews, Dan. Bought my 11 yr old grandson a Pelican 100 Apex Angler at Academy last yr for $349 as I recall. A sturdy, stable rig for his size, and I added some upgrades (bow bungee, centerline Railblaza rod holder, & a 6" hatch with cat bag in front of the seat. Also bought a Yakgear seat pad to enhance the less-than-stellar "seat" that comes with the rig. Not a dry ride due to scuppers directly under the seat, so used some foam practice golf balls as scupper plugs. No water intrusion now! :)
Still looking for a better, light-weight paddle with smaller diameter handle to fit his hands.

Excellent review. Always nice to see a good honest man who is on point in his field of work/play. I purchased my first kayak the Perception Pescador 10' today for only $400 on sale at Academy Sports. (Only the red one is on sale at that price and sale ends today). I wanted a really sturdy kayak body because I do a lot of river floats (always rented previously). The rivers I go on tend to have some rough areas with boulders or logs that are not completely avoidable. As for fitting in it, I'm 6'4 so I simply removed the foot pegs and swapped out the bungee for the seat. At 235lbs with my 40lb pibble on board I'm hoping its really good to 325lbs. Would be nice to be able to have fishing poles too. I think I will get the whisper paddle you suggested. I'm all about sneaking up on the fish. I have not even had this on the water yet and I had a crazy idea... What about coating the bottom and sides of a kayak with a LineX or Rhino lining? Would it make it sturdier? Too heavy? Will it just come off? This could make for a good video for you to do.

Nice video...I went with the Swifty because they threw all kayaks on sale and my wife found an extra 20% off....ended up getting paddle, PFD and an anchor trolley kit for about 250 bucks. It isn't the swiftest boat on the water, but it definitely does the trick. Added a crate with rod holders because the molded in "holders" are pretty much useless. All in all...pretty happy with the boat.
15 buck's and 4 zip ties will fix the seat in any sit on top kayak! Ozark trails makes a nice sturdy 🏟 seat works great

I got the pelican with a seat upgrade and Scotty mounts on both sides for 400$ and I love it. Troll for trout n bass hit ponds rivers its light and versatile. It's my first so I'll have to try a paddle upgrade but I've never had a problem with it
The eagle run is pretty nice if you put a half skirt on it. No problem on moderate rivers and I took on almost no water in extremely choppy water.

That Eagle looks sharp with the pointed bow and it looks like the seat rests against the back of the cockpit giving a lot of support. Being a bit lighter at 180 pounds I probably wouldn't notice the flex as much.
Dan, another great video! I love the way you promote the sport even when it isn't to your advantage financially. It's a great way to build your customer base. I have a pair of Tamarack Anglers that I got around Christmas time for under $200 each. As you said, that was about the cost of a weekend rental, and they're not rentals.
I know the stock paddle is cheap, and want to replace it, but I'm waiting until I can get up to Lodi to get new ones from you. I like the ones you suggested in the $60 to $70 range. I was convinced that I should get a better paddle after your paddle video with Chris came out.
I am looking forward to your Tamarack Angler build. I expect you'll be gearing it toward the lower end of the market, using budget components to go along with the low cost of the kayak. I've done a few things to one of my kayaks and plan to modify the other one in a similar way. There are a lot of videos on TH-cam showing mods that others have done.
I like Mobbin's idea about stocking the Tamarack. Perhaps you could build a budget fishing package (including kayak mods) that would get someone on the water for around $500, with more features than anything else in that price range. Another option would be to sell a package deal for someone to upgrade the kayak they bought at the big box store... Perhaps a paddle, seat, crate, and anchor trolley package...
I'm guessing there are alot of "big guys"out there that would love a video on economical kayaks tailored for big guys.....

Awesome video, so cool of you to review kayaks you do not sell. Seriously, that is SO awesome. However......it seems that the Lifetime Tamarack is too popular. It is now selling for $450. OUCH! Walmart, Dick's both selling @ $450. Total bummer. EDIT...Walmart fluctuates the price of the Tamarack like crude at the stock market. Ordered the Tamarack 2 weeks after my post for $250. BTW....I love it! Point is, you don't have to drop $1000 just to get on the water. Ty again Dan!

I have the lifetime tamarack angler as well. It's my 1st kayak. I bought it for bass fishing, but ended up using it to just kayak around for pleasure. I hate fishing out of it, mainly because I use spinnerbaits and with that, the kayak gets pulled in the direction I am reeling from. It is great for the price as well as for a beginner, but for bass fishing, I'd pass.

Hi Dan I’m new to the sport and I’m getting addicted already. I purchased the pelican from Costco and you are right the seat is junk but for $15.00 you can purchase a stadium seat and makes all the difference in comfort. I live in the Central Valley and will eventually will up grade and come see your shop. Love your videos keep up the good work. Roy

Not a fishing kayak but I got the perception conduit 13 for $500 and it is really nice. Fast and lots of dry storage. I do river trips about 30 miles a day in it.

Great video and you don't even sell any of the boats you reviewed??? Have you lost your mind??? Lol. My wife and I have been looking into buying kayaks for a few weeks. We've owned Bobcat pirogues, she since '93, me since '79. They are basically bare hulls, no seat but we've had a lot of fun in them. We're getting older and looking for just a bit more comfort. I've thought since starting the search, that it would be great if stores had a way to allow customers to test the boat they are interested in. Then here you are, renting yaks, which allows your customers to test your yaks! Too bad you're waayyy out in Lodi and I'm in Louisiana.

I am new to kayak fishing, after taking a 9 year break from fishing. I looked and looked at entry level kayaks to see if I am going to enjoy it. I ended up picking up 2 of the Sun Dolphin SS 10's to get the wife and I in the water. If we like the kayak fishing we will definitely be picking up better kayaks ( probably bonafide's new RS117 ). Just wanted to say I have enjoyed your content as I have been researching kayaks. Made a subscriber out of me.

I have no local shop within 200 miles of where I live so my only option is a big box store like Dick's or Cabella's. Also being on a very tight budget your video's are helping me decide what to look for, what I need, and what is best bang for buck in a lower price mark budget. Keep them up.
