  • Making custom tokens for my board games as well as for my D&D campaign is something that I have really wanted to do for a long time. I have been a long time fan of Magic: The Gathering and play it quite often with my best friends. I have also always been interested in map making and world building and have often spent hours crafting a cool fantasy world or drawing a fantasy map in ink.

My friend Shaun one day suggested the idea of creating a map using the art from Magic the Gathering cards and using a hex tile system. It was then that this idea was born of combining wooden laser cut hex tiles with the art from left over basic lands from Magic The Gathering.
Please join me as we experiment and explore how to make some very basic do it yourself map making systems to use in your next Role Playing Game or Dungeons & Dragons campaign!

While I'm sure some people cringe 😬 at cutting cards this is a creative and interesting idea 💡

Yes. There are so many different ways you can use the map making system across board gaming, magic the gathering and dungeons and dragons. I am thinking of creating a story game experience using these tiles. Also yes. Only use cards you no longer need! :)

That's an amazing idea! Let's be honest: at some point, you end up with so many basics that you don't know what to do with, so... it's a great use for those instead of letting these collect dust in a shoe box. On thing I would suggest is to apply a thin coat of Mod Podge on the completed tiles in order to protect the artwork.
Thanks for sharing this idea with the community!

Thank you so much for the advice. I did do a coat of the glue ontop which I found really helped to keep the art down and secured. But I now think I like your idea more!

This is a great idea, I could see someone laying out the hexes in the shape of their home country and framing it, would make a nice art piece in a gaming room

Yes. Or even as a gift to a board gaming friend for christmas! To Ikea we go! :)

What other ways have you used your left over magic cards for? Leave a comment below! There are so many cool ways to use these hex tiles for D&D or RPG! Also a massive shout out to Shaun for inspiring me to pursue this awesome DIY Game Project. :)

I found that a 1 inch hole punch and some draft chaff could make some great roll20 style character discs for irl maps. It turns out even the worst mtg cards have pretty good art. You can even attach them to washers or coins if you need the extra heft!

@@trevorm3464 I love this idea! This means that the tokens would feel more weighted which is cool! I haven't thought about the feel of the tokens yet. But this is a really cool idea. Thanks for sharing!
