      I didn't even know a comedian could get away with doing that. It seemed that the number one rule is "don't tell a gay joke in a gay bar" - e.g. don't alienate the audience. How he got away with that is beyond me.

    • @delennamachoo

      It started with a morning show he hosted with Mariet Hartley. I think his stand up was off their radar. They saw his all American quality and ran with it.

      @@ryanrivera7217 Depends on who you talk to.
      I think the point the OC is making is what a weird leap that was to make of the casting agent had seen his comedy, but I think they saw him on the morning show he hosted before Full House vs seeing his comedy. He had a pretty wholesome feel on that show, too. His first child was born so the show really pushed the new, young father angle.
      He certainly fulfilled expectations on screen, but there are stories from the set about things he said and did around the children that upset a lot of people.

    • @Harlem55
      @Harlem55 4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @Lauren BIG MAMA Doughty I couldn't see anyone else doing the "Danny Tanner" role. The closest thing that comes to mind is that bit that Tim Allen did on Home Improvement- but still no where close. Full House gave you the "real" feel of things to the point to where the acting on some level wasn't fake.

      As an opener it’s typically asked if you to set the tone so if he was opening it’s NK surprise he started with a Rodney Style performance for the same reason he would if he was closing(which I pray a pro like Rodney wouldn’t do that to a young Bob but hey what do ik) to ease into the crowd. Starting a stand up performance as a new comic people don’t “Trust” or “know” your style yet so you have to start from a recognizable position and then ease them into the pot(your comedic flow(the frog and hot water experiment reference))and then after a few shows with such big names(Rodney Dangerfield) your style would eventually get picked up and as the commenter before me said “influence” the new up and comers will adopt his style somewhat with their own adaptations until it helps their young careers reach their OWN style that works in clubs for them, and then they have openers/closers and the process repeats itself.

    I always liked Bob Saget since I was a kid. Never even knew he was a stand up comedian until after he passed. And, it was Corey Holcomb that pointed out just how funny and envelope pushing his stand up routines were.
    Wow. This routine, from all the way back in 1984, had me laughing today in 2022. And, Rodney Dangerfield brought him on stage. #Legendary #RIP

    I saw Bob Saget at the Comedy Magic Club in Hermosa Beach and he was lightening quick like this for 20 minutes! We were howling with laughter & 2 more jokes passed by & we never stopped laughing. I’ve seen Leno, Robin Williams & other known comedians in LA clubs & Saget was truly one of the best I’ve seen.

      @@bsfan6150 early 80’s? I am not exactly sure the year but I lived 5 blocks away & used to see Leno perform on Sundays for free & he’d park his Maserati or other fancy car at the red curb right in front of the Comedy & Magic Club.

      Thanks, Jason. Early 80s. Wow, you were so lucky to see Bob at that age. I’m still looking for any clips of his early days.

    • @jasonjackson5696
      @jasonjackson5696 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bsfan6150 growing up in the LA area I had the opportunity to see a lot of performers along with many different rock groups and I must tell you, Bob Saget was probably the funniest comedian I had ever seen. He was lightning quick and, as I said in my original comment, we were in tears laughing and we were two jokes behind.
      Jay Leno used to come there one or two Sundays a month and he would have about a 3 inch stack of 3 x 5 cards with jokes he was testing out. If the joke got a lot of laughs it went into one pile if I didn’t get that many laughs it went into a different pile.
      Those were the good all days😂
