Fun to see/hear Trower playing a Les Paul- as opposed to the Strat of his soon-to-be solo career. Love the high energy drumming of BJ, too. One of my Procol faves. Hopefully, still there’ll be more…
The 'jazz grip' is actually from him playing marching snare in the Boys Brigade (the grip comes from centuries back, long before the arrival of the drum kit as we know it). I don't know if he ever played actual jazz, though many British drummers of that era played (old time) dance music, which is likely how he got so conversant with playing 3/4, 6/8 and 12/8 time signatures. Indeed, BJ and Jimmy Page were enlisted to record Joe Cocker's 'With a Little Help From My Friends' after Stevie Winwood and Traffic drummer Jim Capaldi failed to nail the feel after 32 takes. That tune is in 12/8, which is the sort of think Procol played often.
