There was actually quite a scandal involving Natalie Portman and The Black Swan. While she did train very hard in ballet for the role, the level of skill that her character displayed on camera was nowhere near what someone of her limited experience could produce. In reality a very large portion of the actual ballet dancing was done by a highly-skilled professional ballerina who served as her stunt-double. Portman herself was only used in shots that showed her from the waist up or scenes with very little complex dancing, but both the director and the actress publically stated that Portman was some kind of ballet prodigy and gave virtually no credit to the real dancer. There was even a lawsuit filed because of it. I never heard the result though. Probably settled out of court for some undisclosed amount.
I think the more amazing think the actor who played harley quinn (margot robbie) did is all the gymnastics training she did so she didn't need a stunt double (In an interview with the director he even said that she ran up a wall and back flipped without wires talk about impressive for a beginner)
TheMadHatterThatMatters i read somewhere that she had to learn how to run up the wall tho?? cause that's not really a part of acrobatics you learn as a kid especially in heels
Prince of Void They don't normally teach scaling walls to people that haven't passed 14 or 15 because they still have developing bodies and will lose the skill anyways after they've put on more weight and have more muscle, but it is completely the studio's choice. I did do a bit of it a couple years back in coaching training and it's not too terribly hard in comparison to other acrobatic skills.
Seriously? Holding her breath for five minutes? She basically became a fucking gymnast and you praise her on holding her breath? Did you not see the elevator scene? Flipping upside down? No ropes. IN HEELS.
Margot Robbie also trained to actually do a flip in the elevator. She trained in gymnastics and aerobics to accomplish getting momentum to run and run on a wall and doing a flip. During the scene in the elevator the producer noticed that there was no strings attacked to her and realized that she was doing it all on her own every time they redid the shot.
Are we not gonna talk about Tim Curry learning to walk, RUN, and dance in HIGH heels for Rocky Horror Picture show? He learned in three days to walk in heels that some professional models stumble in even after working for years.
you forgot Jared Leto, he had to know what is was like to feel like The Joker. He spent time with people in Asylums. And stayed in character for most if the time.
He copied Heath Ledger, he was the first one to do that, he even wrote a disturbing diary each day to stay in touch as the joker. He would be isolated from his family and cast mates, only speak to them if it’s in the script and only spoke to the director. Heath is the one to get the credit
I'M SO BLOODY MAD THAT THEY DIDN'T INCLUDE THIS!!!!!!!!!!!! Thomas Brodie sangster had to learn to play the guitar left handed for his role as Paul McCartney in nowhere boy!!!!!!
Wasn't it even proofen that most of the scenes were done by an actual dancer and they just put Portman's face an her's? So she got an oscar for deep faking?
There were scenes where they used a dancing double for her, but they were very open about that. She did still learn ballet basics, and spent hours a day training so that her performance would be as real as possible.
You do know Natalie Portman used a body double for most of her dancing scenes, right? They superimposed her head on to the professional ballet dancer, Sarah Lane's body. The only scenes that actually show Portman's own dancing are filmed from the waist up...
Santiago Ferrari No? they actually released the footage of him holding on to an actual plane like in the movie. he was tied to the plane just in case he let go.
***** No. It varies from person to person, but in general, holding breath for more than 5 mins. does destroy brain cells. Not a serious damage, but spend a year diving every day to find pearls or something, and you'll probably won't remember your name when you're 70.
As ballet dancer myself, I feel kind of pissed when they say she learned ballet in like a year. It takes multiple years to even get to a proficient level. I've taken for 12 years with long hard hours and still am no where near professionalism. Portman basically learned arms because there is no way they would let her in pointe shoes after barely a year. She would get seriously injured.
A professional ballet dancer did all the scenes, where you see "Natalie Portmans" whole body dancing. Than they manipulated the video through photoshop and put Natalie Portman' head on the dancers head. You can look it up on TH-cam! A professional dancer did all the dancing scene but still got no credit from Natalie Portman, when she got an award for her role. I didn't like the movie black swan at all, but since i know that with the dancer i also don't like natalie portman, don't know what's going on in the head of some famous people.
Elizabeth Bowns I take film/video and photography arts. Photoshop is a paint program, therefore used for pictures and gifs. You can green screen and play with animations but you can't "Photoshop" a video. Welcome to professionalism.
Shardy Wardy My dear, taking classes or even majoring in something is very different from being a professional. Someone who has real professionalism wouldn't quibble about a simple term like "Photoshop," but since you've decided to take that tack to defend your lack of knowledge, here's the definition from the Merriam Webster dictionary (emphasis added): "Definition of photoshop - transitive verb: to alter (a digital image) with Photoshop software OR OTHER IMAGE-EDITING SOFTWARE especially in a way that distorts reality (as for deliberately deceptive purposes)." As I'm sure you know, my dear I'm taking classes, movies are made up of a series of still images. The programs that digital editors use in this case make sure that the image they want is composited in each frame, thus editing each still image. Either way, it's not, as you said, just camerawork and editing. That is a large part of it and cuts down on costs, but it's not all they did. Perhaps you need to take a few more classes before you get to that bit.
"RDJ had to learn a very interesting skill, the violin and a little bit of tennis with his left hand..." Immediately after, shows clip of him using his right hand 😅
Natalie Portman did NOT dance much in that movie. Te director actually used a real ballerina, and Natalie's faceis just computer-graphically placed on the ballerina's. However, the ballerina was not even credited in the movie, which she was quite pissed off about. She gave an interview about it and said that the director didn't want her to give any interviews before the movie and the Acedemy Awards. People at the AA thought it was actually Natalie dancing
In other cases, when you take credit for someone else's work it's illegal (called plagirizing), so I can't understand how this could've been legal... and as far as I remember, Natalie didn't indicate in any way that she wasn't the one dancing for the most part kirika20
She didn't do all the dancing, but she did 80% of it. When you watch the movie you can notice most of dancing scenes are close ups of Natalie. When it's wide shot - it's double
It's true. They gave her stunt credit and didn't specify that she was Natalie's double. It's studio's tactic to hide her, not Natalie. I remember director responded to this with simple math. There are 139 dance shots in the film. 111 are Natalie Portman untouched. 28 are her dance double Sarah Lane. If you do the math, that's 80% Natalie Portman
Actually, the double did about 90% percent of the dancing. Even the shots that look like Natalie, are the double. They just edited Natalie's face onto the double.
You should have mentioned Keeanu Reeves in John Wick. There's not a single shot in that movie that isn't him doing it. He actually now competes in shooting competitions because he became THAT good for his role.
Not the case here. She held her breath for 5 minutes and did some really cool and hard stunts all by herself: the elevator one (no wires or stunt double + wearing high heels), the one where she is in the cage and she gets down from that trapeze kind of thing to talk to the security guard (forgot his name), the one where she fights with the guards in the cage, the motorcycle one (where she was Harleen F. Natalie Portman was on ballet for many years as a Child she Just but stopped. She had to practice for the Movie because she had to Look like a professional dancer not like a ballet dancer who hasn't practiced in years. It is imposible to learn that skill over a couple of months.
margot also had to learn gymnastics for the Harley Quinn role, that scene in the elevator was actually her with no assistance from wires and no CGI coverup. she's very talented and carried the film along with Will Smith imho
selina lindroth it actually is. She learned all that in 3 months. That’s rlly impressive. I was in gymnastics for 3 years and yet I’m not even close to Margot’s abilities
XxPurple Queen MspxX Wow........thanks ._. HEY IM HOMESCHOOLED WHAT THE HELL DO YOU EXPECT FROM ME IM STUPID AND UGLY AS HELL DONT JUDGE ME I have a couple of d-disorders.................and mental health
Jordan The Puppet hey dont let her get the best of u i myself is bad at spelling like really bad so dont worry bout it u learn how to spell effectively in your own way cheer up buddy
all of the body shots of Natalie Portman dancing are her body double who is a professional ballerina who spent a lifetime studying the art. You do not develop skills like that in the time Natalie spent training. Her dedication and the skills that she learned from training in ballet are impressive for sure, but every dance scene featuring her body featured her double.
Colin Kohrs I agree, she did a wonderful job and took her role very seriously. But they made it sound like that was all her which isn't fair to the woman who spent her life training so she could perform that well.
Inigo Montoya & Wesley in Princess Bride. They learned sword fighting and designed the longest sword-fight on film themselves, all done by them, and done with real fencing swords. I believe one of them even got mild injury filming.
No you see, this is "10 Crazy Skills" Not "The 10 Most Crazy Skills" Or even "10 of The Most Crazy Skills" Or some other BS reasons Oh yeah, that movie is oooolllllldddd Who cares about oooolddddd movies (It's one of my favorite movies tho so ya)
the actual dancer said that ALOT of the dancing was not by portman.. only some closeups, someone training for a couple of months cannot be as good as someone who has trained for 20years...
Fouad Matta no it's just a completely different vehicle Company we just never heard about until I watched something about supercars you probably never heard about
You can hold something equally or more heavy then you know how to chop wood, Skinning however takes precision so that you don't cut through the limbs, organs or joints.
This isn't an extraordinary skill but...Sebastian Stan from The Winter Soldier. He did almost all of his stunts as well as having to learn hand to hand combat and knife flipping.
This is why actors have my respect. The art and skill of transforming themselves into another individual. Mind, body, and soul/spirit. The philosophy behind it all is deep. There is much to learn from actors, one idea being able to use your mind psychologically to become something or someone at will. That's why when people downplay actors as idiots I either laugh or shudder. This is an individual who can literally rock your world by mere body language, voice, and imagination. You would never know who you're talking to with these people. The ultimate chameleon. Funny thing is, everyone is an actor/actress. Perception is key.
She didn't do all the dancing, but she did 80% of it. When you watch the movie you can notice most of dancing scenes are close ups of Natalie. When it's wide shot - it's double
Thank you! I was searching for this comment! Well yes she did dance, but not that much like they told everybody. You can't do that kind of ballet after a few months training, I know this by myself, because I am dancing ballet since almost 20 years.
Dylan Laraway what are you talking about? If someone doesn't do it, or never had to chop wood in their live, it would look lame. She trained to look like she is doing it for years daily
In fairness, might be referring to the fact that using a mechanical log-splitter (as they show her doing) is _not_ chopping wood. I spent years chopping down trees and splitting logs with a n axe, I know. I admit I haven't seen the movie, but what they show isn't chopping wood.......
Aleksandar Petrović not unless you're terrible at improving or got taught by a life long lumberjack who taught it so well you'd never need to improve your own ability.
Olivia Munn worked on sword fighting for six hours a day ... Natalie Portman took ballet lessons five hours a day ... but for how many days? Two or three days? A week? A month? "Six hours a day" and "five hours a day" are, well, basically meaningless statements without knowing how many days they trained for. I would have really liked to know how much training they did for these roles.

Portman is also pregnant during the filming of the movie, hence a lot of upper body shots.
I was looking for this comment. I was going to post something similar.
I mean there's nothing wrong with using a body double but yeah, she should have been credited
Noone asked you
I only read 3 words from this essay
What about heath ledger he basically made himself crazy to become the joker

Kalai Selvi he is such an extraordinary actor!!

in the elevator, she fights a monster with her bat
she runs up the wall of the elevator and i think kinda onto the ceiling???
She did acrobatics as a child. She didn't learn anything new.

RIGHT?! That's what I'm thinking! But She knew those skills before the movie, she did gymnastics as a child
She used to be a trapeze artist. So she didn't learn those skills for the movie. Also I'm pretty sure some is a stunt double, for the studio's safety.
Seriously? I would LOVE to hold my breath for five minutes! (without passing out or anything)
Hatt TheCat I can hold my breath for two minutes

I know how to chop wood already
Probably she was initially chopping squirrels and skinning wood.
She's from Kentucky why didn't She know already?
Knew how to do both things since I was 8...
Natalia Portman wouldn't have been able to learn ballet. It takes 4-5 years of ballet training before they start using pointe shoes. Not a few months.
She knew some ballet from before but had to get better, even just for the closeups.
Wasn't it even proofen that most of the scenes were done by an actual dancer and they just put Portman's face an her's? So she got an oscar for deep faking?

She also had a body double, because as you said it's impossible to learn to dance ballet like a pro in a few months.
yeah exactly
Daniel Radcliffe in HP4?! He trained to hold his breath for over 11 minutes! With his eyes open!
Jenny Penny SRSLY he was 14!!!!!
Banana Cats Not in real life he was older
Caleb Franz yes, he was 15. So much older 🙄
Jenny Penny hello
Jenny Penny that's impossible
margot also had to learn gymnastics for the Harley Quinn role, that scene in the elevator was actually her with no assistance from wires and no CGI coverup. she's very talented and carried the film along with Will Smith imho
Wait so that backflip she did running up the elevator wall was real?!?!O-O
No, she already did acrobatics when she a was a kid. The only thing she had to learn was holding her breath for 5 minutes.

IsrhfhvbScreen Rant
Screen Rant cool
Screen Rant of
Screen Rant you are so cool I love your videos!!!!!
Screen Rant hi
Even if Natalie did learn ballet, a dance double was doing the full body shots, aka most of the actual dancing.
margot robbie also needed to do 3 months of gymnastics
She did that elevator scene herself, no wires or stunt doubles. She trained a lot for the movie, I was really impressed with the work she put in
+music_please seriously I was amazed when I heard she did the scene herself
3 months is not that much
selina lindroth it actually is. She learned all that in 3 months. That’s rlly impressive. I was in gymnastics for 3 years and yet I’m not even close to Margot’s abilities
and my teacher thinks we can learn it in a week with no practice uhuh...
the narrator sound out of breath ._.
Gizmos Monster yeap
Gizmos Monster I know right I expected like 13 seconds of silence after they speaked ^-^

There's a lot of actors that have learned to wield a sword for their roles. Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom, etc.
Orlando Bloom also learned archery for his role as Legolas in LOTR. He got to be VERY good at it
0:59 whenever i even take a small glimpse of Evan Peters my heart just stops
i just wanna say THANKS FOR THE AWESOME DESCRIPTION
Tom Cruise learnt how to time travel for his role in edge of tomorrow.
Art vandaley scientology taught him the way

gyseli Castagne *know
+Diana lopez LOL I WAS JUST ABOUT TO DO THAT XD
oh wow, thanks for telling me I thought they actually had to learn magic
***** you muggle. We magic folks sell those documentries you you muggles as fiction.
😂😂😂😂😂
CRAZY skills. Man ballet, violin are CRAZY.
Thank you for putting "The Pianist" in here. That movie shows a lot about what was happening in my country and it has a powerful meaning
all of the body shots of Natalie Portman dancing are her body double who is a professional ballerina who spent a lifetime studying the art. You do not develop skills like that in the time Natalie spent training. Her dedication and the skills that she learned from training in ballet are impressive for sure, but every dance scene featuring her body featured her double.
Miranda Myers true that
Jeff Busby I'm willing to bet you didn't even do a simple Google search. Of course I can back that shit up, you ignoramus.
Colin Kohrs I agree, she did a wonderful job and took her role very seriously. But they made it sound like that was all her which isn't fair to the woman who spent her life training so she could perform that well.
Damn it. I wanna learn magic tricks and holding breath under water for 5 mins too.
is your profile from mekakucity actors?
Aoi Kirigiri Yes.
then go do it, no one is stopping you
You can not breath under water dammit.
Captain Morgen Ah shit. I meant hold breath. Sorry
Inigo Montoya & Wesley in Princess Bride.
They learned sword fighting and designed the longest sword-fight on film themselves, all done by them, and done with real fencing swords. I believe one of them even got mild injury filming.
No you see, this is "10 Crazy Skills"
Not "The 10 Most Crazy Skills"
Or even "10 of The Most Crazy Skills"

a bunch of *bandwagon* fans who had no idea who she was before this stupid movie?
I love these videos because I get to learn new things
That was awesome!!!!!!!!!
that moment when natalie had a dance double for about 80% of the dance scens ahah
fonjadidi but she didn't
fonjadidi scenes* and No she had a dance double for 20 %
the actual dancer said that ALOT of the dancing was not by portman.. only some closeups, someone training for a couple of months cannot be as good as someone who has trained for 20years...
That purple Lamborghini in suicide squad is not a Lamborghini
yes it is
Michael Kornfeld No it's a Lamborghini, it's just a different model than what your used to see
its an infiniti g35 but it was supposed to be a lambo, lambo just didn't agree to the scene I think
then why did you call it a Lamborghini
Fouad Matta no it's just a completely different vehicle Company we just never heard about until I watched something about supercars you probably never heard about
OMG I CAN'T BELIVE SHE HAD TO LEARN TO CHOP WOOD! WHAT A SPECIALIZED SKILL THAT HARDLY ANYONE KNOWS!
Chopping wood isn't hard.
But most people don't know how to and wouldn't want to learn how to skin real animals.
Oh and in this day and age anyone in Hollywood knowing how to chop wood is probably a miracle.
Nicolas Lofgren she can chop my wood anyday.
Cams250 lol no chop it with her mouth
Cams250 she can also skin my squirrel any day.
love this!
“He had to learn the violin, and some tennis all with his left hand”
*shows him playing tennis with his right hand*
Me: ._.
Chopping wood and skinning squirrels is not a hard skill to learn at all.
+Chris Brooks jennifer lawrence is a woman..
***** lol yeah, I can get behind that
You can hold something equally or more heavy then you know how to chop wood, Skinning however takes precision so that you don't cut through the limbs, organs or joints.
halfhumanhalfzombie Which is still incredibly easy. To me it seems the only people with this problem are easterners. (Not all of em, just alot of em)
Douglass MacArthur especially chopping qood lol
This isn't an extraordinary skill but...Sebastian Stan from The Winter Soldier. He did almost all of his stunts as well as having to learn hand to hand combat and knife flipping.
Erin Chan By Screen Rant's standards that's crazy
learning how to brush your teeth is crazy by the standards of these fuckwits
Natalie Portman didn't learn ballet completely tho, for the real dancing scenes were done by a double.
TeaAndCroissants Yeah, it makes me really upset that no one even mentions her stage double who did the real dancing
Her stage double shulda done the whole thing
Her name?
TeaAndCroissants she did do a lot of ballet though
She still had to learn ballet which is a crazy skill to learn in a few months even if she wasn't doing the hard stuff.
She learned to chop wood?!?! Wow. Im so impressed. * eye rolling *
Evan Peters had to learn how to run really fast for his role as Quicksilver in the Marvel movies.
The editing is just rushed.
Yeah. Every sentence ends in a word getting cut short.
Yes, I am a random comment.
I was just gonna complain about how terrible it is. Thank you for saying it so I don't have to.
CallumW you can forgive them though, they have to upload 1 video everyday.
Anonymous User but as a company with multiple editors it's poor.
Natalie Portman actually had a double for many of those dancing scenes. It wasn't all just her.
now you actually gave me info about movies I HAVE to see
choi minho learned how to smoke for his movie then stopped straight after filming legends only
Legend really did that learning to play instrument isn't crazy compared to that not even close
The narrator sounds out of breath...
._. bun..is dat u?
LOL always
Disturbed Bunny
Disturbed Bunny *sounds
Disturbed Bunny I know right
most of the dancing from Black Swan was done by a professional ballerina and Natalie's face was CGI'ed on to hers...
She didn't do all the dancing, but she did 80% of it. When you watch the
movie you can notice most of dancing scenes are close ups of Natalie.
When it's wide shot - it's double
well the professional ballerina who did the dancing claims that 80% were done by her... so it's her word against yours
CarAccident
the director of Black Swan said Natalie did 80% not me. But it's pretty clear to all people who saw the film
FWAJR that's a lie she actually trained for close to a year to do that movie.
Thank you! I was searching for this comment! Well yes she did dance, but not that much like they told everybody. You can't do that kind of ballet after a few months training, I know this by myself, because I am dancing ballet since almost 20 years.
I'm pretty sure it's harder to play the piano and learn how to use swords than to hold your breath for 1 minute. Are you sure you ranked those right?
Paul Priebe 5 minutes...not 1. She went over the limit
There was no actual rankings. It was just 10 crazy skills actors had to learn.
I think that Jennifer Lawrence's knowledge from Winter's Bone helped her in her portrayal of Katniss Everdeen in the Hunger Games
Natalie Portmans dance double was Sarah Lane, a soloist with the ABT. The the dancing 'head shots' are Natalie, the dancing 'body shots' are Sarah.
Learning to chop wood? Great skill, much wow.
+00WolfSpirit i have and im 13
You're joking, right?
nope.. my grandad taught me took me a few tires until i got the hang of it
You forgetting she has to learn to look like it she does it every day for years
True :D I was going to post this :D also, magic tricks aren't that hard neither
Chopping wood and skinning a squirrel, that must have took her hours a day for months at a time to master it
ILLUMINATUS I would think hmmm 3 years😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
maybe she learned to cut wood with a skinning knife and skin squirrels with an axe.
Had to learn to chop wood? Really? Hahaha xD
Dylan Laraway what are you talking about? If someone doesn't do it, or never had to chop wood in their live, it would look lame. She trained to look like she is doing it for years daily
It takes half an hour to learn to chop woods like you do it for entire life.
Ben G exactly
Ben G
the last is the BEST!!
