Following that, I’d love to hear your thoughts and opinions as well as your own relationship with toxic productivity (if you have one) in the comments down below. Have a wonderful day and I’ll catch you in the next one, peace ✌🏻

      Hi! I have recently written a discourse analysis on study tubers and had a bit of a focal view on your videos. In no way do I mean it to be hate as a lot of videos that you put out are amazing quality. But my research is more of a critique of the neoliberal world. I'm so glad that you have put this video out now and acknowledged the toxicity of productivity. If you would like to have a look at the research, I would love to share it with you :)

    I’m the one who made 100 hour study week video, surgical residents work a LOT and wanted to see what it was like as a med student. I said in the video that it’s not sustainable not even for 1 week. I felt tired and out of touch with life. A lot of residents also feel very overworked. You have countries like Korea where students do this for years on end in high school, and they are very smart but extremely overworked and the suicide rate is one of the highest in the world. It’s a toxic competitive culture that should be changed. Balanced longer term sustainable day to day dedication is way more important than a short burst of studying like I did during that week 😅

      That video was interesting to watch. I like to think of it as you showcasing the potential to do more, like Goggins shows with ultramarathons, etc. It's not to say everyone should do that - rather to open our eyes to the potential we have within ourselves and that we can do it if we set our minds to it :)

    Yes one thing that I learned about productivity based on experience which you have also mentioned in your past video is to be REALISTIC. We often overlooked our capabilities of doing works and ending up not really following the allotted time schedule, so it really boils down to being realistic and proper balance of managing time which only can be done in an individual basis as we all have different circumstances in life.

  • @itssangiex
    @itssangiex 2 ปีที่แล้ว +30

    You're honestly (and I watch a lot) one of the most realistic medical students and content creators in this space. You always make sure to remind your viewers that it is possible to have a social life, exercise and have hobbies outside of medical school, which was something that wasn't always the case. I don't think of you as sharing toxic productivity whatsoever but like you said about your USMLE Step 1, I think in medicine is really easy to fall into this trap during exam season where your life ONLY revolves around studying. At least in my country, it is expected of you to keep it that way and it took me a long time to realize that it wasn't sustainable. I am currently on a gap year, partly because this toxic mindset of having to be studying all the time, specially in the pandemic where we students were stuck at home and /could/ be doing "something" made me fail my goals to achieve a certain grade to enter in my chosen specialty. That being said, I am now keeping a schedule dedicated solely to studying that leaves time out to working out, my hobbies and being with family and friends. And it's doing wonders with my focus time and 'productivity'! So really, the most important is to reassess what's not working out for you and try new strategies.

    This is so important and so true. Thank you 🙏 It really depends on your state of mental well-being in that period of time. Ive learnt I can go through periods of time when I watch loads of study tubers and productivity videos and it makes me feel really good, motivated and inspired. And there are other moments in my life when I’ll watch these videos and just feel so down because just the thought of doing a 10th of what these people are doing feels so impossible. And at these moments I eventually do try to remember to take a break from it all because in that moment the content is not helping me. But thank you so much for talking about this and normalising it so that when at times any of us don’t feel so good in ourselves and need to break we don’t feel shame for doing so. Take care of yourselves everyone 💜

For sure when it comes to look at content from a distance and realizing, like you say, you only make content on what you want to show,. Which only shows us a part of you and a part of your life. That said, I like the part you are sharing with us. Thanks for the many inspirational video’s! Warm regards, from Belgium ! Stephan

    Love the more open content! The only thing that I would like to add is that although we should normalise burnout as in it’s ok to be burned out and most people go through it, it shouldn’t be normal to be burned out, our jobs or studys should not have that effect on us and we should not let them! I think it’s important to understand that’s more to life and sometimes the best thing to do is actually take a break or give up even if we have a worse grade or fail an exam. It’s our mental health and it should come first!

    I'm really glad you made this video, I've been keeping an eye out to see your perspective on the conversation. One of the things that I'm glad you touched on was the difference between what you show in your videos versus what real life is. I think with the blurred differences between studytube and vloggers, it can be hard to remember the amount of decision making that goes into the kind of videos you put out, and that you are focusing on one aspect of your life, rather than your life as a whole. The decision to maintain that personal privacy and focus on school content I think makes it more difficult for an audience to remember the other aspects, which much be an interesting place to navigate in your position.
    I am definitely someone who too regularly buys into toxic productivity benchmarks and goals, and I find it so easy to do so in grad school, because that behaviour is often rewarded. I only found your channel after I was spectacularly burnt out and had to go on a brief leave to get my head back together, but I love that you're addressing this conversation, and the role that you and channels like yours play in it.

    This video was so well done. Thank you. I was actually thinking about this today. I feel like I'm clearly not studying as I should and I watch A LOT of study videos or productivity. At first I feel happy to learn new tips but now I am feeling so much overwhelmed and feeling like shit about myself that maybe you are right and I should take a break. I agree with the fact that we should be careful about how we deal with a video but I do also think that creators should sometimes be more "realistic" and say that sometimes they are not doing their 10 hours sessions because they couldn't because they're just humans. I think that this is the piece that is missing here. Thank u a lot for your reflexion and thank you for the content that you make. It really motivates me sometimes.

    I think studying/being productive 12+ hours a day is great if that's for you (although I'd argue it's not sustainable for most people long term) but it's absolutely not a prerequisite for success. I study maybe 6 hours a day, rest ALOT and I did v. well in first year medicine and continue to feel like the balance I have is right. It's good you're acknowledging your lifestyle is not attainable or realistic for some though.

    I've seen channels that I've felt were pushing toxic productivity and I really don't like that type of content as it doesn't feel good and it affects mental health of people who are soaking in that type of content. But honestly, I've never felt like that about your content, from the beginning you were honest about how you spend your time and you take every chance to emphasise that what you do is something that works for you and that everyone should create their own plans. You provide nice tips and dose of inspiration, at the same time not forcing anything, and it's a perfect recipe in my opinion. On the unrelated note, watching your old videos and comparing them to the new ones really shows how much you and your channel have grown over time. I'm not a materialistic person, but seeing how much you have been able to upgrade your setup, living space, camera gear etc really manifests success of the channel. Keep it going, you're doing amazing job!

    thank you for this video, it's useful and I could even say relaxing, cause it made me feel that it's okay if I don't study constantly very well and if I am not always and everyday productive... But on the other hand, I should also say that your videos have given me that push to go and study in a more constant way. So thank you for both things. And to sum up, you are right, never hit burning out... (even though sometimes life pushes you to that cause you just have a lot to achieve)

    This is really nice. It's truly appreciated that you take time to explain this. I love watching and subscribing to youtubers who share very good tips in studying. Though, I must say, not all worked for me. So it is very important to not just absorb what you see or learn over the internet. You have to also reevaluate yourself. You are the best person to tell what works for you or what not. I honestly have high standards in studying, and mostly, I do find them unrealistic. They best to do is to sit back and be kind to yourself. Remember, you will do much much better if your body is well and conditioned 😀

    Hi Naser I’ve been watching ur channel for quite a couple of years I think and I’m not gonna lie ur one of the people who I feel keep it real, like I know that med school students have to do a lot of studying and I’ve always seen ppl around me who are in med school or even online having to study a lot, but what I love about ur channel is u showing ppl that’s it’s possible to have a healthy balanced personal and study life
    I also love ur study with me videos because I love ur setup plus u screen sharing, like I can actually see u work
    For ur longer videos like the 10 hour ones I put it on solely with the intention of doing as much as I can and i find I can motivate myself to study longer and waste less time

    I think another point that could be considered with regards to not filming your downtime is that it is just that - downtime. Filming, editing and posting it is a sure fire way to turn relaxing into a chore. Keep up the good work Nasir, videos like this truly set you apart as a great content creator!

    The things you talk about and the advice you give is so widely applicable. Outside of motivational content you should be just as careful watching people be good at something because we dont always see all the time prior to them succeeding.
    Very well said, great video!

    To be honest, your videos really helped me. I've moved to Portugal to finish my college (hight school). Now I am on my second year and during my first period of classes, my grades weren't good. It happened because I didn't study as I should and I could do. I knew your chanel some months ago, and it's helping me a lot, you gave me tips of studing pratices and motivation and I am so grateful for that. I already did my first tests and I think it went well and I'll receive it during this week. Anyway, I just wrote it because I'd like to say that you don't need to worry about people expect for you, just do what you want and like to do. You helped a lot of people, me inclused, and will keep helping. Thanks for everything and i just want you to keep doing what you like to do. Sorry if I wrote something wrong btw, my english is not perfect.

    Exactly Nasir this is just the tango of life you take some steps forward then backward then forward then backward,,,,, Speaking for myself I didn't notice a toxic vibe in your content,,,, almost the whole batch at my school knows U and talks about your videos,,,, people like U made it easier to get through quarantine and still find the motivation study. I'll also be starting my clinical rotations this summer and for 3 years and I already have a balanced vision of what to expect because of you ,,,

  • @TheBlueChalk
    @TheBlueChalk 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I used to be very toxic, watching youtubers like you and others (although not blaming you for it), made me work myself so hard even though im in high school, to the point i couldnt study for a month. However now I think ive been able to filter out that and work how much im comfortable with and taking breaks when required.
    IN terms of your content, theyre always super useful to me, even this video, however, I do like your day in the life vlogs of you out and about studying the best. That is the type of studying life i want, and even though i cant do that here, I can kind of live it through you.

    I loved this video so much. I always thought that you needed to work so hard that you felt that you were about to die. But, over the years, specially this year, I realized you can be productive with a good sleep higiene, having some time to socialize and take care of yourself. Everyone is different, so find what works for you.

  • @ziel_ona
    @ziel_ona ปีที่แล้ว

    I totally agree with your points. When I watch a video or read something I just ask myself if this tip or strategy seems like something that aligns well with my values and what I want my life to look like. I might try some things only to realise it’s not for me, or on the other hand broaden my perspective by someone’s fresh and different point of view. We don’t have to internalise everything we see, I think the biggest problem comes from comparison. I want to learn from others and grow, not necessarily compete with them. For example, I know very well that learning for 4h straight won’t work for me and that’s fine. But what I took from that video was to try to have some uninterrupted time blocks for study / work.

    It blows my mind that you have to even explain this to people! Like people never seen to understand that TH-cam and any form of social media is literally a choice. It’s an illusion of sorts. Not saying that people are being genuine some are, but some are not and it is mind blowing that people never seem to get that and they have to attack the person and come at them about not “being real”. It’s ridiculous. How many people post stuff and don’t even follow what they are putting out like routines and what not? It’s literally to make content I mean duh? But I feel for you Nassir, I hope that you are not discouraged to stop making content that you enjoy! There are plenty of us who understand that you are a human being who is just really good at time management! Keep up the good work!

    I’m currently recovering from migraine caused by overworking myself this week. Studying or working a lot is great if you genuinely enjoy it, but it is very hard to enjoy it if you are overworked. And it is okay not enjoy it too, the important thing is to do things that make you happy. Read fiction, go to nature, if those things are important to you. Simply being productive won’t make you happy if you don’t enjoy it.

They can't think for themselves. Don't let incompetent fools who can't think on their own give you a complex. You do what you do very well. The haters are just lazy and jealous. Keep doing you, man!
