Best chair for backpacking. Ultralight chair. Small chair. Chair that can fit in a backpack. Nemo Moonlite elite backpacking and camping chair.
Once again…. I FINALLY bite the bullet and buy the Helinox for 5 backpack setups, and you find something better. You’re killing me, Larry!😂🤣
The helinox is an amazing chair!!
Helinox is good brand. Ive had my chairs since 2016 and still going strong.
Don't get caught up with the backpacking arms race.
I know with all the gear channels these days it's hard to not feel like you're missing out. But when it's a marginal difference and you've already paid a lot of money for what is still a great product.. don't bother!
I know I say that and I haven't always done the same, we've all been there 😅
RIGHT !?!? I just bought the Helinox last month.
😂
have the previous moonlight version and love it. As a 6'4" 250lbs + backpacker it was by far the most supportive and sturdy of all the chairs I could get my hands on to try. Def recommend!
That's a good recommendation if you ask me.
I chose the memo as well over the hellinox simply because it had so much more support and so much more sturdy. hopefully the Moonlite elite is the same
Yeah same the wife and I have the older version. Looks like they just made it lighter. But love the adjustability of the Nemo chair.
I was literally just starting my search for a camp chair. Blessings brother! Thank you!
Wow.. Very cool, like the light weight and back angle adjustability, but a bit pricey for Sure.
I just got this Lil 2lb mesh chair on Amazon for 34$ and it is pretty comfortable 👌
Maybe not 180$ comfortable.. but works for now.
Thanks for all your Great Videos. 👍
I am still using my Thermarest sling that my sleeping pad goes into. It is probably 25 years old and still doing just fine. I like that I can use it in my tent or outside. These chairs don’t work inside a tent to play cards or read while it is raining. I don’t mind sitting on the ground, plus it has insulation under my bum, these don’t. I’ll keep rocking the old school way.
Gold dust mate
Guy came in asking what to get because he had broken his Helinox twice, showed him this, and instantly fell in love with it. Having a skirt and weighting 1 lbs. 2 oz. is killer. I was thinking of getting the skirt for my helinox but have now decided to purchase, the moonlight elite. As soon as I sell my Helinox, lol discounted, of course.
How the hell did he manage to break his Chair Zero? He must be well over the chairs weight limit of 120kg...
I just checked both chairs and the seat height for the NEMO is 1.5" higher than the Helinox Chair Zero. I've had the Chair Zero for several years and love it but I love my NEMO products and am now considering getting this for several reasons based on your review. Thanks for pointing out the differences, Dan and Emmett! 😁
The REI Flexlite Air should be in the conversation. I think it’s actually a smidge lighter than the Helinox. Mine is still going strong!
And it’s half the cost
Yep
Not built as well. My sons REI broke my Helinox still going strong
As far as I can tell, they don't have a high back version.
Complete deal breaker for me.
I read the plastic connector breaks a lot
Funny.. as I have been reading about this "Moonlite Elite" version for months as I've been using the original Moonlite chair for years and absolutely love it!! So just returned from REI (really!) and brought my current Moonlite chair to compare them side by side.... First of all the "Elite" is narrower with a slightly shorter back and the tubing is smaller... leaving my sitting in the "Elite" experience not as confrontable as the regular Moonlite at all!... BTW im 6' 210 Lbs.. Your example of the "Snapped" pole concerns me for longevity vs the regular as the poles are way more robust..... Soooo I'm sticking with what I already have.. to save weight I don't pack the case.. Just my $.02
RW
I tried both at REI myself to see how the elite compared to the original moonlite chair. I have to agree that I prefer the original, but I do like that they made a lighter version for those that prefer something like that. I might have liked the elite better if I was skinnier, but I think for now, I'm willing to stick with a heavier chair since that's more comfortable for me. Plus, I don't feel like it's as likely to break on me.
Mine came today! I definitely like it! It is a small chair. Takes a little time sitting in it to figure out the most comfortable ways to sit in it.
Thanks!
Wow, thank you so much!
I bought the Ozark trail hiking chair clearance out at Walmart for $11. It's heavier than those chairs but it's comfy and you just can't beat the price compared to weight when doing just a few trips a year. It's nice to start seeing companies getting into these other gadgets
Same. What a bargain! I bought a no name base for mine and have carried it wrapped like this one for about 3yrs.
Have used the Helinox Chair Zero for years. LOVE IT. The downside is when on soft ground (sand, mud, etc) it can sink in. Never used the pad for it. I camped with it many times in Anza Borrego (San Diego). It's super lightweight and comfy. This Nero Moonlite Elite looks good though.
I saw this chair first come out and I immediately thought, SPIDER SILK!😂
😂😂 baby spiders make great chairs!
Gotta check out that Big Agnes Skyline UL chair. Sits much higher and really comfy.
Will do!!
That’s the one I have & like that it’s higher so easier to get out of & it fits in the motorcycle saddle bag. I thought I’d use it for a thru hike if the AT but have decided against the weight for a Nemo z pad.
@@sheilahenry7279I don’t think I’d take a chair on a thru hike either.
Holding out for a high back version 😬
This chair definitely peaks my interest. I do worry about how the adjustment cords will hold up over time. I use the Chair Zero L because it has a slightly higher load capacity because I’m a more plump man and I really like it.
Look into the Big Agnes Skyline UL. Rated to 275 lbs & has a 15” seat height, which I LOVE.
You have the best BY FAR videos I watch. Not only informative they are hilarious.
The Helinox chair zero sand mat is very important for soft ground use.
I use mine every time as it will prevent the legs from spreading and getting damaged.
Those ground pads are great in sandy or moist ground. And it allows for a bit of storage too. Woods made one with the ground pad but it probably weight 5x more.
I’ve loved my moonlight chair, so much I bought another one for my wife. They’re the heavier ones but they are so comfortable! Can’t wait to try the new one.
The extra pad is nothing in weight but good to have in mud, snow or sand.
... and river gravel.
Nothing in weight? The Helinox Ground Sheet for the Chair Zero weighs a whopping 160g! My Load Spreader Tubes are half the weight and because you have to remove the feet from the legs to use them, which saves another 30g, they only add 50g to the weight of the Chair Zero rather than 160g.
The base cover is essential at the beach. We pack travel chairs on vacation to the Caribbean due to having to take a plane and finding remote beaches with no chairs. Works great in sand as long as you have the pad....
We grabbed some kilos gear high backed chairs when I was looking for light weight chairs for our Jeep. We lived in them for 6 weeks in tropical North Queensland.
Shocked at how comfy and durable they are. 3 years later we still have not used our old large traditional camp chairs!
Hiking gear has been a revelation to our travelling kit.
That background noise is actually nice, it lends credence. So much better than the noise of so-called TH-cam music... Great video...
Heck ya I'm glad to see you made it out to the Superstition this year. Phoenix native and love having it as my back yard. Love the work and thanks for all the info over the years.
I’ve got a moonlight, and love it, but I do really like that feature of the case actually being part of the chair to further increase the stability.
the bottom pad also (sometimes) helps keep the chair stable enough to sit on when the ground is very uneven, since it provides tension at more angles
I bought one about a year ago, it’s a great chair ! It was an early model with a larger mesh seat the only problem was bugs biting through the mesh , putting a sweatshirt over the chair solved that !
Nemo makes amazing products. The dual purpose wrap case/bottom support is the key to the chair. I carry five chairs in my truck. Two camp chairs, two beach chairs, and a mid weight hiking chair. This chair does it all.
I just weighed my helinox and it is actually 17.55oz no sack that secured my decision to buy the Nemo thank you!🙏
I love nemo and they 100% back their products. I had the nemo stargazer chair for years and the seams one day ripped. Nemo replaced the entire chair by sending me the newer version! I have the original moonlite but am most likely going to pick this new one up too. Their products and it'd quality never disappoint!
Sat in it at REI yesterday and love it. I too have used the Helinox for several years. I too felt like I was sitting higher which made it easier to get out of. Saving up and waiting for my REI rebate to snag one. 👍👍👍
The Nemo is not higher. I have both. Tape measure doesn't lie.
@@vancey6072 Thanks for the data. Mine was totally subjective.
Finally! A chair that comes with the ground cloth! Good ole nemo.
Chair Zero has one too you can get.
@@vancey6072 yeah, but as an extra. I like the dual purpose wrap and cloth idea.
@@sonorangaming449 The Zero's Pad also wraps around the chair just like the Nemo to serve as a stuff sack. And yes... it's an extra cost but at least you have the option NOT to get it and save $30 unlike the Nemo. If you do get it, it's the same overall cost. I had high hopes for the Elite chair but after using them both side by side I concluded Helinox has nothing to worry about.
After your review, I've decided to try this new chair, but I'll be waiting until it's sold somewhere besides REI.
Tried it out at the local REI a few weeks back. Wasn't enough of a difference for me to replace my Chair Zero that's still going strong from 2018. I may just cry a little when that one finally breaks since we've been through so many trips together.
I've tried several backpacking chairs, and gave up and went retro with an old-fashioned aluminum and web lawn chair. They are surprising lightweight. Yes I look like a hillbilly goofball with it strapped to my pack but it is sooo comfortable when you get where you're going. Check one out! Check out the weight of those old lawn chairs.
😂😂😂 now that’s HYOH & I’d love to see a picture. Good for you to be different
Mine arrived yesterday (citron as well!), and I immediately tested it, compared to the old moonlite. It is a bit shorter, but for the weight I can deal with it. Seats very similar, and it will be going with me this saturday on the bikepacking test run from Appleton to Green Bay to confirm its proper place in my kit, before the first official trip of the year. The rest of my new gear for this year arrived today, so that is all good timing!
Just got the high-back helinox and absolutely love it. The fact that I can lounge and rest my head did it for me. Like the recline feature of the Nemo but think I would desire that head support in recline mode?
Also, the fact that it is bolted in on the frame at the bottom, makes it more sturdy, hence why I think it will not break.
My Therm-a-rest Uno Chair traveled the world with me for almost 10years, big people threw themselves in, used it everywhere and as a main chair on the road. It was on sale and I'm still looking for a spair one, even though it's still in very good shape
I loved the original REI Flexlite, which was mesh, before they changed it to solid fabric with slits (which like the Helinox's, make your butt stick out, ugh, and your keys fall out) but this looks mighty fine.
And it's not entirely heavier, since you have the option to leave the anti-sink matt behind. It you add Helinox's matt, the total is competitive.
The adjustability is appealing. When i wear out my Flexlite, or want to give a chair as a gift, there's now a mesh option.
Thanks!
Wow I almost got the chair one last summer but decided to hold off. Now I come back to the market and there is something even better. Nice.
My Nemo Moonlight is amazing! I love that I can fit it in my van or take it out on a backpacking trip. It’s definitely space and weight conscious and super comfortable
Sat in it at REI. I have the original moonlight and it’s the most comfortable chair but it’s like 2lbs. If this one goes on sale i’ll be picking it up!
Thanks for the review. Looks like a great chair.
Helinox does sell a similar ground pad. I always bring it for support in the mud. But it's also good to throw your gloves or other small items on that you use around the fire.
I have only ever used the Helinox and agree it’s an amazing chair! I like what I see in the Nemo and will be trying it! Thanks for the “comparison!” 😂
The base is a very nice feature. I am a heavy guy and I have own home made ones to avoid sinking into snow, sand, mud, etc.
After collecting backpacking gear for quite a few yearsamd am satified with the gear I own, this is the only item I think I really want.
Mountainsmith Slingback. 5 oz, completely underrated. I throw mine on top of a log or rock with a sit pad underneath and don’t miss being that close to the ground *at all*.
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE YOUR GEAR REVIEW videos!!!!
😂😂 thanks man! Let’s get out on trail!!
Not a backpacking chair but for. In camp I bought a. DoD chair that looks somewhat like those but has a higher back and adjustable legs.
So it works low as a beach chair and up to sitting at a table
I find that it helps a lot in finding a level spot to take off my progressive bifocal glasses. It's better to see blurry than to have everything warped.
Just like what @randalwilliams stated. The new Moonlite Elite chair is narrower than the original Moonlite chair, both in the back and the seat. I have both chairs and when sitting down in the Elite. The chair squeezes my legs and the two poles will dig into my back. I really wanted to love the new Elite chair and was hoping to save some weight for backcountry hikes. Unfortunately, the new Elite is not comfortable and am thinking about returning it. I'm 5' 10' and about 215lbs. If you're overweight, don't get this chair. It's really made for thinner/petite individuals. If you're not worried about the weight of the chair. I strongly recommend the original Moonlite chair. It's very comfortable for heavy set people and cost less. Time to lose weight. :/
I am very glad to see your review/preview of this chair. The other Nemo chairs I own are phenomenal. I quite often carry the elite's HD brother the Moonlite. Instead of the Rei flexlite or Mayfly mantis, due to being more comfortable. I could care less about the extra pound. But NOW this!!! I am geeked to try it. The case/ground attachment is great for both sand and snow. Or both if you hike the lake MI sand dunes in the winter. Thank you!
I sat in one today and really liked it.
The Anakin Skywalker moment was hilarious.
totally agree, we got the cheaper Nemo Moonlite and it's awesome ! The Elite may worth the extra money if used on the beach or for long hikes, being more lightweight. We don't use a chair in those scenarios. I would say the Nemo Moonlite adjustment system is probably a little easier to use the Elite's. I don't know for sure, I didn't have my hands on the Elite
I gained some weight over the past 5 years, and moved back to the Helinox Chair One from the Chair Zero, as the Chair One supports past 260lbs. If I was looking for a new chair, and I lost some lbs, the reclining chair could be a nice option.
Yeah, I weight a tad over the limit for this chair, so I think I'll stick to my Crazy Creek chair for now.
i abandoned my helinox a long time ago. I used it very heavily while working as a farm hand. the joints didnt hold up a year. Ive been a really big fan of the REI chair. The slip over design has proved way more durable than helinox ball joints but i might give the nemo a try once my REI needs to be replaced.
I've got an original moonlight - I'm 189cm and it's super comfy. Highly recommend.
I day hike. I stop then move often. I had a 1lbs. Helinox Zero. But now I carry a 6 lbs $10 beach chair I bought at a grocery store. I miss the light Helinox but my beach chair folds and unfolds in seconds and with no struggle. I'd pay $$ for one a much lighter one that unfolds as easily as my grocery store chair. It being 4' long is not a problem.
This chair is comfy for my small dog to nap on my lap after a summit hike
After multiple days of walking I am not doing that to my knees (Helinox) with 9 inches of ground height, but I love Nemo and their engineering is amazing. Dan can you review the Big Agnes Skyline for us taller folk?
I had the Nemo Moonlight, not the elite, the regular heavier one that claims a 300lb capacity, and it broke on trail. Those plastic/rubber snaps that hold the seat to the frame was the point of failure. I really liked the chair up to that point. I’m a big guy, 6ft 250lbs. I have a Helinox Zero also which has not failed but it’s pretty small for a big person and I don’t entirely trust it.
I now have the Kilos Gear 2.0 outdoor chair and that thing is a tank. It’s similar in weight to the Nemo Moonlight (regular, not elite) but it’s substantially more solid when you sit in it.
I'm a big fan of the bottom pad. My girlfriend and I the helinox chairs winter backpacking, and they float really well on the snow with the pad attachment. It sure isn't light, though.
Man...I bought the Helinox Chair Zero as per your recommendation (I bought the highback as I am tall) and I love it. I took it up Mount Elbert with me and it was great to have. I'll check my local REI to see if they have any that I can sit in to compare and contrast. I really like that the hubs on the Nemo are aluminum...my only gripe with the Helinox is that the hubs are plastic and we all know what happens to plastic eventually. Good looking out though, Dan, I always love your gear reviews!
I just picked one up, I’m excited to use the footprint in the sand on Wisconsin River. This should be the first year I don’t end up with my chair legs sinking all the way down.
.. Looks nice .... recently purchased a Helinox Sunset chair (high back model) ,, on a sale probably because of a strange blue print version for $120.00 ,, added in the ground mat and the rocker bases .... great for car camping but don't think I would take on a trail adventure ,, I have other fold up chairs smaller and lighter ,,but without a back ,,if I feel need for off ground seating .. for maybe on shore at a fishing lake ....
I really love my Nemo Moonlite. It's so comfortable. I'm not sure I'd switch to the elite version, as I'd rather have the durability than shave a couple ounces off the weight.
I've been looking to find a replacement for the cheap Walmart stool I've been carting around.
I like the look, stability and weightlessness this chair seems to provide. Unfortunately I weight in at 275, so I would break this one.
However, it did bring it's non elite heavy duty brother to my attention. Unfortunately just as heavy as my stool, but my old bones need something with a back on it. The non-elite version may just fit the bill.
I wanted to love this chair so badly, but I was sadly disappointed in the Elite. My Chair Zero and the regular Moonlite are far more comfortable to me…😢
The thing is, like Dan, I initially felt like the Elite was more comfortable than the Chair Zero, but then I spent hours sitting in them both while working and got uncomfortable far quicker in the Elite, unfortunately.
The Elite seems more well built and looks awesome. It is also more stable. I love the case idea too. The lounge toggle seems cool in theory, but I found that it doesn’t lock very well and slowly leans back over time when in upright mode. This wouldn’t be a big deal if the back of the chair didn’t dig into my shoulder blades so much.
Overall, it’s a cool chair, but I still think the Chair Zero takes the crown 👑
Damn! I thought I was a king with my pillow and a rock! 49 nights solo this year and I never needed more!
👍 nemo is trying to improve gears but the previous one is better. The new one, the string on both arms are very comfortable. So many options for Helinox but only a few are sold in the US.
been looking forward to this chair since Justin showed it in one of his videos months ago. I wonder how the durability will be long term.
I'm a bit skeptical about the adjusting thingie, that's just more to break but I really like being able to keep it from sinking in the mud.
Ugh, we just bought 3 of the heavier moonlite chairs for the family Christmas present... The new one looks so much better, the case as a pad would be so great in sand too!
Nemo makes solid stuff. We have 2 chair zeros & they are fantastic
Bought it and love it. Thank You for your always honest information.
I was gung ho gonna buy the REI Lite Chair last year during their sale but the Moonlite was there and I thought I’d give it a sit. It was no question it was the most comfortable even compared to the Helinox. Everyone is always jealous of my Moonlite on trips now and I’ve made many an Nemo convert. And now that they have an even lighter version is rad.
Dan, how come you never mention the REI Flexlite? The Flexlite is 2 oz lighter than the Nemo and $79 cheaper. Its always been cheaper than the Helinox.
Yep
I can’t speak for Dan but I tried the Flexlight found it tippy (side to side). The Moonlight and Helinox seem much more stable to me.
Because the flexlite sucks… you sit right inbetween the support bars and you feel it in your butt
I prefer the flexlite over the zero. I paid $65 for mine when they went on sale.
@@loonytik25 I paid only $10 more than that for my Moonlight. Most things go on sale for those who wait and watch.
Very cool chair but I’m too pleasantly plump and it digs into my back more than the regular moonlite. I also like the larger rubber feet on the regular without having to make the platform dirty.
I have the helinox chair one and the big Agnes UL chair. Love the big Agnes chair just because you sit up higher
The pad is useful in the mud, and maybe essential on sand. Nice chair but still a bit too pricey for many people.
This with a high back would be next level good. You can get the zero high back for not much more wieght. Would be keen to see a Comfort comparison between that.
Great video, Dan! Have you, or anyone you know, ever tried the Cliq Portable Chair? They definitely wouldn't be so good for a backpacking chair, being as they weigh 3.9 pounds, but they look quite sturdy (they claim to support 300 pounds) and have received a lot of good reviews. Thanks again for all of your GREAT content!
I bought the regular moonlight chair last year... great design and comfortable chair. Good video!
The "pad," used to increase the ground contact surface area, can be used in snow, sand and other loose ground, not just mud.
I have a cheap version of this chair for $25 on Amazon. It's lasted 10 years so far through multiple beach and camping trips. Why anyone would spend $130-$150 for an aluminum camping chair is beyond me.
Which chair was the Amazon you bought this is to much in price
I have 2 helinox a chair one and my favorite sunset chair. Helinox does have the ground pad as I have one. Still interesting chair
I have the original Nemo moonlite. Little heavier but I love it....
My wife loves her OG Moonlight. I LOVE NEMO products, but I’ve continued to prefer my odd duckling Big Agnes Skyline UL chair. For me, the 15” seat height makes a HUGE difference after multiple miles/hours sitting in my sit-inside kayak, for multi-day, overnight trips.
Ordered one right after watching I have the regular nemo moonlite and love it.
Ohhhh goldilocks 🎉😂❤
Hello from Beautiful British Columbia Canada
Sounds like a great option, might have to consider a switch.
My first Helonix Zero lasted 4.5 years of heavy use, the new one is 3. I'll keep it thank you.
This is perfect timing was just about to buy the Helios chair zero but this looks very tempting
There is also Sling Light. Rigid frame so it does not fold up into a water bottle sized package. SL does offer better head support. SL is a lower chair.
Ground sheet on helinox is 6-7 ounces so they are dead even if you compare apples to apples.
I have the helinox and love but my other favorite is the big Agnes ul. Back legs bend out making it better for soft ground and it sits up higher making it easy to get out of. Slight weight penalty at 1 lb 11 oz
I sat in mine while I watched this review and I agree with you. GOAT.
I ordered one and tried it out for a few hours. For me it wasn't quite as comfortable as the Helinox when using without a coat, the plastic on the corners dug into my back quite a bit and the back of the chair sags down when you're sitting in it so you have less back support. The cords for adjustment also were slipping and not staying put. I'm sure other people may have a different experience but it wasn't working out for me.
