When you think you left it all out there, then watch Zach Miller run and realize you were just looking at the front door to the pain cave and Zach is fist fighting in the basement. What a beast.
This film embodies the qualities of ultra running (and the ultra running community) as well as any other I've seen. The beauty, the pain, the competitiveness, and camaraderie of the sport are all there. This is the type of film you send to someone who doesn't understand the point of logging ultra mileage in the wilderness. Really well done, guys!
Finally a trail film the likes of which I could only dream of. My favorite bit besides the conclusion of the race (of course) would be the silent moments on the trail with just the ambient noise. I could watch that for hours.. Exactly why the Headlands is at the top of the world's running destinations. GREAT FILM!
This is my absolute favorite running video. I watch it from time to time just because. These guys are both animals and to hear Zach cheering for others from 1st place with Hayden right on his heels.
the best race highlight of any sport ever ... felt like I was in 3rd place racing ! . .awesome job by film crew keeping up with these fast guys! awesome!
@11:20 Jamil silhouette holding the GoPro on a stick running as fast .. then later Zach asks Billy Yang is he sees anyone ... so I realized the two masters of Ultrarunning video work came together to get this done.... just missing the Ginger runner to get the trifecta! Awesome video work!!
I would definitely watch the entire race first person like this... fantastic scenery. Very relaxing. I'd like to have hours of this footage to play in the background while I work.
This is my favourite running video. It's so inspiring to me seeing those two battle it out with everything they got, while keeping such great attitude. I watch this video at least once a week!
This is the BEST trail/ultra film I've ever seen. Makes Unbreakable look dull. I DO wish it weren't called "Miller vs. Hawks," implying Hawks *lost* when he is nothing but a winner here. Especially given that it was his first 50 miler. Also, kudos to Jamil (and others) who ran along with them! And HOW did you keep your video so steady? Incredible.
Tim Smith I appreciate the comment Tim. My thinking in calling it that was to highlight the duel and the fact that it was really a two man race, which is pretty crazy with how stacked the field was. We didn't know what would happen but it was pretty clear after a few miles this was a two man show most of the day. We used mostly cameras with a stabilizing gimbal. -Jamil
Amazing footage guys, this is a game changer! You make the spectator feel like he or she is part of the race and the pain. Very inspiring! Thanks a lot, I will be watching this video quite a few times more :) Best of wishes out of the Netherlands!
Guys, you have an incredible talent to catch the very heart of "this is why we run" on film👍🏼 Anyone asking me for what I am doing out there, I just point them to one of your docus. Congrats to Zach & Hayden, great performance!
This is my favorite running video ever. I watch and listen to it weekly when I do a trail workout/uptempo run. The music and race vibes make me feel like I'm not alone and in a race. THANK YOU!
Good God that was the best 21 minutes of racing ever filmed! Amazing job filming Those two dueling it out, spectacular and so insanely inspiring. The fact that three of you, you Michael and Billy combined footage to put this together is so perfect, great, great job!
I love the running community. So much support and love for each other. Everyone is just out there to feel good and have a good time breaking down mental barriers collectively. Truly a beautiful thing.
Only just seen this for the first time. Absolutely phenomenal footage, it really captures the heart and soul required to compete at this level. Zach's running like his life depended on it, what a truly awe inspiring person and moving video. Great work guys!
What a great video. Really captured the race. Being able to run with them and at multiple points was excellent. The end was special as well. You're all the real deal! I tip my hat off to you all, the runners and everyone else involved. Now back to watching again.
Tremendous job filming this epic battle! Not many people could keep up with those 2 badasses and stay on their feet while filming such amazing footage. Also loved the capture of the camaraderie at the end. Mad props!
That's so Motivating. The Music, the Landscape that's sooooooo awesome. The whole Spirit of our Sport in one Video. What a quality. ❤️❤️❤️ Thumbs up for this 👍.
Unbelievable! This is the first time I've seen filming at a race that gave me any indication of what it was like to be there. Inspiring racing from both of these guys! Thanks for putting in the work to film these guys!
Huge admiration for the camera work in this! The Osmo DJI cam really sings with bright outdoor light... I can't get enough of those long tracking shots with natural audio. Great work and amazing coverage of a gripping race! Loved it. Subscribed.
More videos exactly like this please! Just following behind with camera for long stretches, some occasion music, ambient sounds. I’ve watched this so many times! Best running video ever. Thanks.
LOVE this video! Embodies all we love about trail running - the beauty of the trail, pushing each other to become better, the mutual respect we show others for their talent. Awesome job!
Great vid, Jamil. Props to Michael and Billy for the footage too. The extrended stretch you covered on Coastal Trail behind Zach and Hayden is freaking awesome. Thank you for your work!
So awesome! The race, the competition, the filming, everything! And I was touched by Zach's comment at the end, "You're the real deal, that's for sure." Heavy words from one hell of an athlete.
Wow. Amazing. The course, the athletes and you guys making the film. Thanks so much for making this. You are great runners but to do that and hold a camera is something else. The last couple of minutes at the end are great to see. Great job Jamil, Michael and Billy.
This is so beautiful I come here to watch the race and imagine myself running on these beautiful hillsides when ever I feel stressed. This video is way underrated. Should get much more views due to its quality.
Amazingly well done! What a battle... seeing Zach's face and being able to hear his breathing at mile 43 and 46 was sensational. To feel that level of effort and exertion at that distance is hard to understand without seeing and hearing. Thank you for the insight, for sharing the race.
When i started looking at the video, i didn't know the result of the race. I remained scotched until the end. This little movie combines suspense and beauty of the californian nature. Zach Miller is wearing a red cap where it is written "deutschland" that stands for germany. Thank you for the whole covering.
Great video. Really captures one of the things that I love the most about running races, the good atmosphere and everyone cheering each other on despite different levels. Beautiful to watch, and good job camera man!
This video is amazing. I just ran my first 50k this past Sunday and I was in a race for 2nd with a guy. This brought me right back to the course with all the vibes. Thanks!!
Great work Jamil, filmed with a big heart and edit with talent. I did not now about this video but I am a big fan of your work. Thank you from London, UK
This was awesome footage! Thank you for filming it. It gave me the idea of filming videos in first person POV on trails through forests and just uploading them like that. Very serene!
So rarely do we get to see footage like this of some of the best runners in the sport. Awesome work filming and putting this together, thank you! I'm blown away by Zach's pace. The way he was pushing with 6+ miles still to go... and he just never let up. Insane.
For the time that we were following both of them Miller would encourage every single person they passed. That right there is the embodiment of sportsmanship. Here he is running his butt off with Hawkes right on his butt and he still takes the time to encourage and even inform people how far ahead the others are. Really love to see it and it is nothing but class.
I watch this video every night before a race. It never fails to get me motivated. So a good run from them both and brilliantly filmed. Solo marathon tomorrow. Gonna finish it like Zach did! Hope I can make the same noise.
This is exactly the type of footage I wanted to see!! Thank you for posting such an awesome video! Really love your films and vlogs! I just purchased your Run Steep Get High hat & can't wait for it to arrive! :)
Awesome coverage by all three of you guys, you all need to get together and do more of these races. Great respect at the end from both runners. What an awesome sport!!!
As good as any drama on current media...there is youth, grace, strength, picturseque scenery, stamina strategy and....all out warfare... and, in the primal motion of man....the footrace....good on ya' Run Steep for deliverin' the goods.
One of the best trail ultra vids ever. Un-freaking believable. WHO THE F DOWN VOTED THIS!?! If you have ever ripped down a trail trying to get a strava segment CR you can appreciate the amazing performance of Zach and Hayden and you are probably in awe of Jamil's camera work. Damn!!!
This is some next-level $hit! From the camera work to the racing I was gripped the entire time. Towards the end I had sweaty palms and goosebumps. I can neither confirm nor deny that I cried at the end but DANG! does it make me proud to be a trail ultrarunner. Chapeau!
The segment from the 26 mile mark is pure joy to watch. To see/hear Zach Miller whilst in a competitive race give encouragement to other runners is amazing
Running is such a great thing, helps with development in many regards, will power, dedication, hard work, patience and the list goes on, im currently recovering from shin fracture and watching this really keeps me motivated and excited to get back to running again.
When you think you left it all out there, then watch Zach Miller run and realize you were just looking at the front door to the pain cave and Zach is fist fighting in the basement. What a beast.
This should be a famous quote
Almost 6 years later and I still watch this video when I need motivation. I've yet to see anything else that comes close to this!
Me too!!
This sets a new bar for race coverage. Well done!
right?
Amen
Jamil's running footage is still unrivaled. Also watch Chasing Walmsley on this channel

+Kevin Connelly Thanks so much
Awesome Job guys!
Well said!
+Kevin Connelly Thank you Kevin! 💪
Kevin Connelly I
I LOVE the way Miller cheers Hawks on, greets him at the finish line, and helps him sit down. True family in ultrarunners!
best running film yet! what a wonderful collab, no frills, just feet pounding and raw emotions, loved every second!
Some nice music too which also adds to the drama and scenery, I think 🙂

This is so insanely good!! Love the silent parts where all you here is there pounding footsteps, and the camaraderie between athletes. Well done jamil
Impressed you can move that fast while filming with a selfie stick, keep the subjects in the frame and still stay upright.
Mountain Ridge Physical Therapy what are stabilizers
Hello, do you know what does he uses for filming ?
wow...that's what I've been wanting to see for race coverage...great work!
fantastic editing, well done!
Something so meditative about watching Zach and Hayden run down those trails from 8:30 on!!! Poetry in motion!!
Incredible video. FYI...Zach ran a 7:10 pace for that 50 miler. The last 3 miles were under 16 minutes. INSANE!
That's inhuman.
The last three are also downhill...still nuts overall
Wait. Why was the clock time at 10 hours? I'm so confused
10 am, race started at 5
@@brady2484 it did not take them 11 hours to run it my dude
The camera man should be winning races. God he runs

i agree.. hehehe!

I wasn't that serious about the name. Miller vs. Hawks does capture what's going on here. That gimbal works impressively. So smooooooth.
Honestly I've watched this 4 times now Chromecast to the big TV turned up loud. It is just too good.

Jamil and team, this is an outstanding piece. The final few minutes had me gripped even though I knew the outcome. Nice work guys, inspiring stuff.

The best running video I have ever watched. Really amazing footage!
Great filming and running guys! The end was the best when Zach said, "You're the real deal!" Totally.
Shouting encouragement to everybody you pass on the trail is the textbook definition of "conversational pace".
This explains the "All In". You just can't stop running if someone just 1min behind you throughout a 50 mile race! Great coverage!
There is simply nothing more pure then the sounds of running. Loved this. Captured so well.
Great vid, Jamil. Props to Michael and Billy for the footage too. The extrended stretch you covered on Coastal Trail behind Zach and Hayden is freaking awesome. Thank you for your work!
