I bought the older Explorer 36 114270 online during the pandemic, pretty much pulled the trigger without even seeing or trying the watch in person. As someone who was used to bigger and busier watches ( I had the the 42mm Exp II 216570), I was initially a little disappointed when the Explorer 36 arrived as I felt it was underwhelming and was already thinking of selling it. However I gave it a chance and wore it daily for 2 weeks and when I was looking at my wrist I had an 'Aha' moment, I finally understood and appreciated the smaller size and the beauty in simplicity. Long story short, the 216570 is no longer in my collection while I'm still wearing the 114270 almost daily till now.

Simple and I think a good comment too. We all have wrist circumferences. Mine is 7.4. I'm debating a 36 vs 39 and have found my 38mm SARB 035 to be about perfect. It also depends on the bezel too. I have a 36 Lorier Falcon that is beautiful but, for me, just a tad too small on wrist.
I'm leaning toward the 39 Explorer.

Just got mine and I'm 5'6" and 160lbs - used to have a Panerai 44mm so I'm not unfamiliar with larger watches. This new one is the absolutely perfect size for me. Simple, perfect. I really dig it and can't see myself tiring of it. Great watch, Rolex!

Great analysis. On the James Bond point, Ian Fleming actually wore the 1016 variant while writing the JB novels. He coined the Explorer 1, ' the gentleman's watch'. I am 6-4 210 w/ 7.5" wrist, and the new Explorer looks small on me; and I am still trying to get use to it. I previously owned the 116600 Rolex Sea Dweller which at 40mm was the perfect watch size for me. The thing I disliked about the Sea Dweller was the excess weight which was noticeable on runs, hikes, etc. In contrast, I sometimes forget that I am wearing the new Explorer 124270 on my outdoor pursuits w/ its compact form factor and 120g weight. Moreover, the watch is perfect for business settings when I have to wear a suit and tie. It is a great all-arounder. In a perfect world, I would like it to have a date function and be sized at 37.5mm, but it is pretty incredible as is.

Its the all rounder aspect where the explorer shines. So much so its actually difficult in a collection because it covers so many bases that all watches steal wrist time from it.

Just changed my 'expression of interest' from the 40 to this. The 40 fits great on my 7.25" wrists, and after previously trying the 36 I was on the fence about it being too small. Sometimes you've just got to accept if you want the original classic size it's going to be a small watch. I recently purchased a current Explorer II and have a 40mm Sub, but love the versatility of my Grand Seiko 37mm quartz. Expecting the 36mm Explorer to give a similar wearing experience, and hopefully with everyone wanting the 40mm I'll get one a lot sooner.

Its hard to compare considering I have more time with the 36 on my wrist and only trying the 40 on at AD. I understand the history, but at the end of the day its important for me to have a watch I'm happy with.

Anyone trying this on for a video should state their wrist size first. People will come up with all types of mental gymnastics to justify liking this 36mm watch. Small watches have not been in style for over 30+ years at this point. Men are also physically larger than in 1950 due to nutrition and often too many calories. If your wrist is over 7” this watch will look feminine on a man. It’s actually looks smaller than you would think when you see it in person

Also, we need to get off the “original size” and “heritage” bunk. This is simply a great looking watch. Its heritage is completely made up marketing. Shouldn’t even be mentioned in the same sentence as a Moonwatch. Its original size is just a result of the time it was made. That was the style. It hasn’t been that in a very long time. Rolex brought this back for smaller men to buy.

@@denbo74 I agree, heritage and history is overplayed marketing. I like the watches size because of its wearability and under-the-radar look. I judge the watch based on what it does for me as an every day wearer.
But don't get me started on the moonwatch. Ultimately, you wear the watch you paid for, not the history of previous models. You aren't James Bond if you get a submariner or explorer, and you aren't an astronaut if you get a speedy.

It is al relative. Unfortunately I have to live with tiny 5.7 inch or 14.5cm wrists… A 36mm case and 44mm lug-to-lug is the absolute maximum I can (barely) pull off. So, despite I am a certified Sinn and JLC fanboy, they (still) have nothing for me… I have been hearing “the big watch trend is over”, for almost two decades. I have been waiting for two decades for a lot of brands to ‘do a PRX’ and issue 35mm versions. I would love a 34/35mm Sinn 856 UTC, a reissue of the 35mm Speedmaster (without the effing girly diamonds and colors!) or even a 34/35mm Tudor Ranger. But no…nothing. Barely any waterproof tool watches in 34/35 or even 36mm at all, of any heritage brand! (Except Rolex.) Even today. Sinn still does not offer a single model in 34/35 or 36mm. JLC’s waterproof watches are all wall clocks. …So, my saved up funds are probably going towards a Rolex 114270 next year 🤷‍♂️

When you get used to wearing a smaller timepiece, bigger watches start to look and feel ridiculous. Its the law of the universe.

Nice review, but I came away with little understanding as to whether you REALLY feel that the 124270 is a "small watch"! Hardly even a mention! I bought one for my 6.5" wrist and I can tell you that, while it is not a large watch by sports watch standards, this iconic 36mm (36mm bezel diameter, 35.4mm case diameter) is proportionately a perfect fit for a wrist up to 7". That was true in the 1950s (Explorer 1016), and remains true today. Nice to see that, in returning to the 36mm after a brief period of abandonment, Rolex got the memo... "If it ain't broke, don't fix it". Somewhat reminiscent of the Coke Classic/New Coke debacle of the 1990s. My other grail is a 43-year-old Pepsi GMT-Master (16750) at just a hair under 40mm, and my wrist is equally comfortable wearing either the 36mm Explorer or the 40mm GMT.

It looks smaller in person vs. video. I think the idea that a sub is "look at me" is in your mind. Most people dont know or care what watch we are weating. And if they are, who cares what they thingk....you should be wearing what you like, not worry what other people think. I think 38mm would be the sweet spot for explorer and other rolex sport watches. There is no right or wrong, it's whatever you like is the right watch.

@aussieexpatwatches thanks for the reaction 😄...and just a tip: more wrist time. After all, That's what most people come for. To see how a watch looks on a wrist. If I had a youtube channel about watches I would show the watch on the wrist with different looks. For example, wearing a t-shirt, a suit, a longsleeve shirt and a sweater. I haven't seen any watch channel do that while again....i guess that's one of the main reasons to visit "how does it look on a wrist" ....( I don't have the amount of watches to start a youtube channel, just one $155 watch 😂 so that would be boring real quick.....
All the best to you buddy.
