They both have high standards, obviously. They both bring a lot to the game, no doubt. But what makes Messi indisputably a step above than the rest of the players is that he adds significantly much more to the game than others do. Messi gives you so much more to the game than just scoring goals. (No disrespect to Ronaldo, but I want to stress the importance of bringing other aspects of technical abilities in the game that leads to the goals which are as important as scoring them) To score goals, you need someone to dictate the game from the mid-field area, someone to play key passes to you, someone to bring the players play together and create chances for the forward players. Football is after all, a team sport where you have to support each other so that your team score goals. However, these chances to score goals don't come that easily to anyone, especially in a highly competitive setting. Players who can create these goal scoring opportunities are what I believe are the gems of football. This is where Messi comes in. Messi has the ability to adopt different roles in his game, which he does consistently well. Apart from his keen ability to score goals, his play making skills and the ability to pick out important passes to his teammates make him significantly more lethal than any other players in the world. Messi can be a threat from basically anywhere in the field, not just from goal scoring perspective. Ronaldo is perhaps more deadly in the box ( in terms of putting the ball into the back of the net with more conviction) , but Messi is equally deadly from both inside and importantly outside the box as he is intelligent enough to pick out key passes to his teammates and adopt the role of a playmaker. They both are fantastic, however. They both make football the best sport in the world.
