In this video, we are continuing our Thailand Travel Guide with a trip to a hidden village in Northern Thailand, to Mae Kampong Village, located in the Chiang Mai Province. Only 1 hour away from the city, Mae Kampong is a perfect day trip from Chiang Mai. If you want to stay overnight, you can choose one of the Mae Kampong homestays.
Our first stop of the day is a local coffee shop called Rabein, which offers a bird' s-eye view of the entire village of Mae Kampong. Right next door, there is another coffee shop called Baan Ing Dao, which offers the same beautiful views of the village. If you take a trip to Mae Kampong Chiang Mai, the coffee shops should be on your to-do list.
Taking a shorter path down from the coffee shops towards the actual village, we see many of the homestays in the village, restaurants, and gift shops where locals sell tea, wine, coffee, and sweets made in the area. Although Mae Kampong village is a tourist attraction, the locals kept it authentic and representative of small mountain villages in northern Thailand.
The next stop on our tour of Mae Kampong Thailand is the temple Wat Khanta Phueksa. The temple is older than other temples in Thailand, made of wood with a beautiful architecture. If you decide to drive, you can make this your first stop and park your car here, since there is plenty of parking near the temple and you should find a spot, especially in the morning.
On the side of the temple, there is a pathway towards the main part of the village that helps you avoid the main road and the traffic.
The main part of the village has a lot of restaurants, coffee shops and souvenir shops. If you are visiting on a Friday or on the weekend, the village will be busier, and all the food stalls and shops will be open. This area is the nicest part of the village and has some great spots for taking pictures.
Since we were in this area, we decided to eat some delicious Thai food. The traditional food in this part of Thailand is the northern Thai spicy sausage, so we had to try some. Food at the restaurants and food stalls in Mae Kampong is very affordable, so make sure to try the different types of meat and desserts they serve here.
After a quick bite, we decided to grab a local taxi and head over to the Mae Kampong Waterfall which is about 10 minutes’ drive from the main part of the village. The ride to the waterfall costs about 20 Bhat, which Is about 0.70 cents.
For lunch, we decided to leave the main area of the village and head over to a special restaurant in the area called The Giant Chiang Mai which is about 20 minutes from Mae Kampong, on the way back towards Chiang Mai. The restaurant is more like a treehouse, with the tables up in the air. The tree that hosts the restaurant is quite impressive so if you are in the area, this is a spot you definitely have to check out.
