I used to play Darktide so much a while back! I only briefly played when the big update happened and it's hard trying to find proper up to date builds with the new skill trees. Your videos have been great to catch back up! Thanks so much.
Don’t rely on cc abilities for too long, it’ll stall you out at higher difficulties where you or your team need to dodge to get buff stacks. The best way to deal with hordes is to quickly kill them, not hold them in place while someone else does.
This is an excellent video and I agree with everything in it. The recommended character class of zealot reminds me of how we got our 4th team member in the group I tend to run with. A friend of mine started playing darktide with my regular group insisting that darktide was a first person shooter and he would be fine starting with the veteran because he was a long time call of duty player. I told him darktide was primarily melee and tried to talk him into playing a zealot, but he insisted so we hopped into a game and he struggled because he REFUSED to pull out his melee weapon and has since stopped playing entirely because he claims darktide is a bad first person shooter. His wife, by contrast, while she started playing a veteran because she thought the play style sounded the most familiar, ultimately listened to the advice, made a zealot and focused on melee, and became our 4th team mate. She later also agreed that the zealot was significantly easier to play than the veteran as a new player. High quality content as always, Ryken.
I think zealot should be the last choice for newer players. While the class is straightforward, the role within the team is not. I have seen many newer players really struggle with zealot and just solely focus on melee and get crushed because they don't have the core mechanics down. My vote is for veteran
@@ericlenhart6343 But the point of Zealot is because you have to learn the core mechanics... I would say that going down while learning is expected - how will you test your mettle if not in combat?
The compounding impact of IRL work makes producing videos hard (creatively and mentally spent)... Have been also working towards the Grim Protocol update by making a bunch of beginner resources for the benefit of new players coming in! Also when an update draws close, I usually slow my videos down since balance changes, buffs, and nerfs might impact the relevance of build guides and reviews. Once the patch notes drop, I'll know what I can release soon after :)
Enjoyable vid! Recommended it to some friends who are joining with the next update - Ryken, could you do more weapons build videos after the next update? You had by far the best videos on youtube for that.
Thank you for sharing! Glad you found my video useful! As for weapons builds - of course I plan to release more, however usually when patches are approaching I tend to slow my weapon builds and guides since there's always a chance that a balance pass might make the video out of date immediately. Build guides will resume once the patch drops!
I just picked up the game yesterday. I chose Veteran to start out because of my FPS background. I think I'll switch to Zealot. Thanks for the excellent beginner guide.
I do not agree that Ogryn is new player friendly, while a properly built Ogryn can be damn near invincible in a mosh pit of enemies their size and reduced speed alone means they'll be taking more ranged damage as well as being disabled by Trappers and Hounds far more often than the other three. As such I must recommend the Veteran instead because their ranged sustain will play into a new player's pre-existing skills far more readily than those of the Ogryn. Additionally, your understanding of the melee-toughness interaction is not entirely correct. First and foremost, the damage dealt to you is calculated after the damage to your toughness, so if you have 100 toughness after the attack it'll block 100% of the damage to your health, though the first attack to reduce you from 100% is always fully blocked, except by non-standard melee attacks. Secondly, having Toughness over 100 essentially counts as 100 toughness, meaning if you have 200 toughness and take 50 toughness damage, you don't take 12-13 damage because 200/150=75%, instead you will take 0-1, the latter is due to rounding errors.
That's a fair point! However, the trap people then fall into is becoming reliant on ranged weaponry to deal with problems. This dependence then often translates into being too stubborn to pull out melee to fight back. I've literally observed vets take hits to the face because they are insistent on shooting things down instead of melee.. in the early difficulties, shooters aren't too much of a problem, so its a lot more forgiving to get stuck into melee and learn. But I do agree that Ogryn might not be everyone's cup of tea - hence why I decided upon Zealot as the best starting class!
I started out as an Ogryn player before even trying the other classes, if you can learn how to avoid taking damage as the biggest class in the game early on, it's going to make the other classes way easier.
For some players sure, but Veteran just has a huge lack of survivability if you don't know what your doing. Meanwhile the Ogryn can literally just swing heavy attacks, or pull out a riot shield and you can easily take melee, and ranged attacks. Veteran needs to actively look for specialists, and has to make great use of their ability and not just random press it. From my experience, which is only 60 hours right now, and my friends experience which is about half that, we both have a harder time surviving with Veteran, and I tend to use Psyker the most, and not a Teleken Shield, Smite Psyker either, a BB and Venting Shriek Psyker. Not to meantion, Veteran is much harder to level up as all the important skills and weapons come at much higher levels than any other class
So, how do you go about crafting the perfect weapon? If I want a weapon with the "perfect" 80/80/80/80/60 split, do I just buy whites from the armory until the max rolls work out that way? You mentioned Sire Melk being pointless to go to to buy weapons, but he's the only way I've seen to get maxed out 500 rated gear (I only recently hit level 30). Am I missing something?
The perfect 80/80/80/80/60 comes from obtaining a weapon that has the potential built in already - you'll be able to tell just from looking at the distribution! To reach the actual 80/80/80/80/60 split, you'll need to invest into the weapon to empower it, and once it reaches its power rating of 380, then you should get that maximized split. The fastest way to get weapons with this distribution is from brunt - just keep rolling weapons until it pops out! 500 rated gear comes about when you fully empowered the weapon AND have tier 4 perks and blessings applied to it!
Best way to do this is just use whatever weapon you want to use. Make sure your dmg stat for example is your most focused until you reach max mastery with said weapon. When you master the weapon to max then you can go to brunt and rng buy for your perfect split. Then you will empower and change perks and blessings how you want since you have it all unlocked
Will you be doing a break down video/videos on the new great swords and ogryn weapon when they're released? I'm not sure if to would be helpful to new players or if you already have one but maybe a video on the different enemy types and what a general rule is to certain situations (Like if someone is netted then try get them out quickly as its a lot easier and quicker than trying to raise someone who is downed).
As a request: please make a vid explaining keywords or status effects. the game is littered with keywords that have no almanach ingame to check and no reference on if that stat is good or not.
As a new player, with my new player friend, my friend has easily concluded Zealot is the easiest starting class, and for us, Veteran is the hardest, specifically, because Veteran has the least availability to constant toughness regen, you need to actively kill specialist to activate on demand toughness, which is just a learning curve to actively seek them, or manage your ability well.
Once you get Voice of Command, Vet becomes very tanky (which is a problem in of itself because you'll find that people tend to rely too much on VoC as the survival tool). Combine that with Iron Will and Vet's survivability increases alot!
Voice of command vet is your melee focused build anyway though. You dont wanna hang back with VoC because its best when it benefits everyone. My VoC vet has the middle keystone with priority targets (the one that turns pinged enemies yellow) and I am always in the front lines with a chainsword and a bolt pistol, sort of a comisaar roleplay with my clothes. I exclusively play damnation
I was doing ogryn and zealot when i first started. Thinking going tank but i liked zealot alot purely off the chance to use the assault chainsword and eviscerator. Now i can run around as a world eater. Dont need the the butcher's nail when i have my faith for the god emperor
I thought I had already watched this as Reginald released a similar video just 2 days ago! :D Honestly even as a 200+ hours player all the guides are helping me as well, Darktide isn't very good at telling you how to survive. Case in point I had no idea toughness worked like that, I thought it was just extra HP always. If I had to rank classes in eaze of use: Ogryn>>zealot>>veteran>psyker, I finally leveled my ogryn to 30 from ~5 a few weeks ago, and wow was it easy, I think I was like lvl 6 when I started playing tier 5 missions and feeling really good about it.
Oof, your ranking is WAY off. Ogryns are either the hardest or second hardest to use, easily, because situational awareness, positioning, and mobility are not only FAR more important, but FAR more difficult because of how chonky he is. He's a massive target, and on higher difficulties, is actually the hardest to stay alive with if you don't know EXACTLY how to play him. Vets are easily either the easiest or second easiest, depending on your playstyle. Voice of Command (aka veteran shout) is easy mode activation for all but the hardest difficulties (which are just straight up difficult no matter who you are, lol). Zealots are the easiest to stay alive with if the melee playstyle clicks with you, and have multiple ways of dealing massive damage as well. Psyker "ease of use" greatly depends on build, but usually are the most technical class and have more to manage than the others, plus being more squishy doesn't help. It's a tossup between them and Ogryn depending on build and enemy variety in mission.
To be fair, Melk isn't as important is he used to be, but he does shave off a lot of cost compared to buying an off the shelf Gray weapon. Also since his contracts are weekly, it helps me rotate my characters once I've achieved all the contracts.
Absolutely! Not as important, but still gives you something to look forward to in terms of equipment if you are new player. In fact, because Melk's importance is much less in this sandbox, you might even say that buying stuff from Melk for fun or just to try it out is more acceptable now - when before you'd hoard your Melk Bucks hoping for the god roll of your dreams!
Tips for new players: "When you come to a point of no return in a mission. Do not let anyone be the 4th to jump down. Instead wait for the 4th and jump down together." I have been in plenty of matches as I was learning the game and someone (me included) was to slow to jump down and then got trapped by a Trapper or otherwise downed and the rest of the team was unable to reach them. That brings me to my second tip: "Only move as fast as the last man." Not being in Coherency with your teammates means you will not receive the many benefit from it. But you may all so be to far away from your team to assist you if you happen to go in to a downed state or crowd controlled.
Unless the 4th is taking literal centuries to get there, doing things like killing 1-2 pox walkers, going to places already looted. Then look out for yourself
I like to think of it as a buddy system. Don't let anyone wander off alone if you can help it; go with them for safety! Similarly, don't leave anyone behind on their own; stay with them for safety!
00:47 i dont think the bolter is the best choice for iconic weapon here as i feel like im more likely to see one on a zealot than on a veteran where the plasma outshines most of the things a bolter can do.
Okay. I need some help, I saw another video aimed towards the new console players and he stated it’s hard play Zealot on controller. He suggested Veteran as a starter class. Any clarification would be appreciated. I’m starting on Tuesday.
Hello I've been watching your guide builds and find them helpful for a new player like me (DT finally on PS). I got a question though. How do you duel a rager lol. They're easy on lower diffs but on harder ones, i find then hard to kill on melee they just rush you. Do you step dodge back and counter or just shoot them from far?
If faced on a 1 v 1, dodging to the side is your best course for counter-attacking. Ragers have a deceptively long reach, so even if you think you might be out of range, you might take an unexpected hit! If you have a tactical axe or dueling sword, your special attack can knock a rager out of its attack combo! Also, certain weapons do poorly against Maniac armour type (what the topless Ragers are made of). The Ogryn's Krourk VI is an example of this - its deals with Crushers more effectively than against Ragers! By the same token, certain weapons will absolutely tear Ragers apart (Chainaxe for example!) If you are faced with a Rager pack of 3+ and above, create space by falling back (no shame in falling back to create room to fight!). Pick them off 1 by 1. Man-fighting it will get you torn to shreds in an instant!
@rykenxiv Thank you! I'm actually using one of your builds for my favorite class, the Redemeer Zealot with the Eviscerator. I love supports and tanks and i really like how it blends the two.
The first thing I notice when watching the vid, that accent lol...look into your profile, kinda suspected but also surprised honestly. But hey your vid is better than many others, which they just blabber nonsense.... A 5 minute info content but dragging the vid into a 50 minute vid...

00:47 i dont think the bolter is the best choice for iconic weapon here as i feel like im more likely to see one on a zealot than on a veteran where the plasma outshines most of the things a bolter can do.
does zealots fury of the faithful/charge affect ranged? i know it giver +20% to fire rate but what about crit chance and damage?
That is only for melee attacks!
What's the mod that tells you the percentage of an ammo pickup that a teammate picked up in the killfeed?
Numeric UI I believe!
Also, fck Demonhosts lol
If faced on a 1 v 1, dodging to the side is your best course for counter-attacking. Ragers have a deceptively long reach, so even if you think you might be out of range, you might take an unexpected hit!
If you have a tactical axe or dueling sword, your special attack can knock a rager out of its attack combo!
Also, certain weapons do poorly against Maniac armour type (what the topless Ragers are made of). The Ogryn's Krourk VI is an example of this - its deals with Crushers more effectively than against Ragers! By the same token, certain weapons will absolutely tear Ragers apart (Chainaxe for example!)
If you are faced with a Rager pack of 3+ and above, create space by falling back (no shame in falling back to create room to fight!).
Ogrin is a really bad choice for a first character, all my friends who started ogrin realizing how boring he is in a few hours and were about to drop the game
I agree on the zealot tho, if you can play a low level zealot, you can play anything
