I love industrial Ministry...but I also love OG Ministry...Uncle Al has just always been talented. Glad he's sort of embraced his early work lately, Nothing to be ashamed of at all, it ranks up with the best of new wave, especially Everyday is Halloween...no shame dude, it was all fab!

Huge Roxy Music fan and pretty big Ministry fan so this is tops!
But looking at some of the live performance footage you could tell that Jorgensen was already leaning towards his post-Land of Rape and Honey image and sound.

Legend has it Uncle Al did this one to get Arista think he was out of steam. He wanted out of his contract. The rest is history. The problem is the the style he settled on was Thrash. Loud, fast, heavy guitar rock. I don't like Thrash. I'm not knocking it. I'm just not partial to it. So that was disappointing after Twitch, which was germinal to a lot of my interests.

If you've heard the other unreleased gems from this period, there was enough material for a second LP. The interviews with the former band members on the prongs.org/ministry site are really good and help shed some light on the metamorphosis that was taking place.

If you liked Twitch, you should like Land Of Rape And Honey, apart from the songs The Missing and Deity, it sounds a lot like Twitch, though with a harder sound. Songs like I Prefer, You Know What You Are, Flashback or Golden Dawn would have fitted well in Twitch! And even in later records you can still hear some post-punk remnants, it wasn't full indus/thrash at all apart from Psalm 69 and records after Rio Grande Blood, listen to Faith Collapsing and Cannibal Song (on Mind Is A Terrible Thing To Taste), Kaif, Whip And Chain and Vex And Silence (on Dark Side Of The Spoon), Broken and Shove (on Animosity), Worthless and Worm (on Houses Of The Molé). And even though it doesn't sound post-punk, try Filth Pig with has a more blues/stoner feel! In fact every Ministry record is different and has its own qualities, the post-88 albums are really far from being just thrash. But I understand that if you don't like thrash, Psalm 69, Rio Grande Blood, The Last Sucker and a good part of Houses Of The Molé are hard to listen! I may be the only one who loves everything Al did including the very synthpop With Sympathy ahah!

Industrial is a genre on its own. Think of it like the Heavy Metal or Hard Rock or Electronic music. With early Ministry there was a mix of influence. EBM from Belgium, some pre-Nu-Beat. Italo & Chicago House Music. European New Wave. There was a bunch of music in Chicago in the 80’s. It was a huge mixture of Electro, Disco, Rock, Punk, New Wave, Italo, Hip Hop. That help influence House & Industrial Music . Which influenced Techno and up to today’s music. So much music happened in Chicago from 1977-1995... Still is happening. Other cities countries and scenes took it and made it different.

Hmm, there's a lot there in the older work. I like the area of Twitch & Land Of... a lot. Although I moshed my brains out twice during the 90's to the Psalm 69 & the previous The Mind Is a Terrible Thing to Taste and it was in heavy rotation for me & my friends, I'd have to say that the older Synth-Punk flav'd stuff stands up the best with age in terms of interesting to listen to.
For me interest in Ministry waned heavily for friends & myself with the advent of Filth Pig and onwards as it all became a bore (lolz, no pun intended) and was way too uninventive in contrast to the former in terms of sound. And way too boring & repetitious with the lyric / topics, in contrast to the previous use of metaphor which had been wielded craftily & sounded great but now had been thrown out the window for a direct disdain & yearning to lyricly vent about fucking boring American politics again, again and again.

They were pretty damn solid in their previous incarnation; the one that I grew up with. Like for others, they became less relevant after Twitch. I bought Psalm 69 when it first dropped and I was in college, but I only played it a few times before I got tired of it, even though I regularly listened to a good amount of other Industrial bands at the time.
