I truly love Signals, a perfect record. Countdown brings tears to my eyes. When I think about 1982, Signals is the soundtrack of that year... "in the high school halls"..
Don Juan is my favourite Joni Mitchell album !! I also loved Diamond Head and saw them live 22 times. We were talking to the band after a concert and told them we had missed the last train and would sleep at the train station. They said we could sleep in their hotel rooms. They were all incredibly nice
I'm 67, and I love these podcasts. I lived through the album years. I enjoy the eclectic choices. I own Glassworks, Offramp, Tellihim, and the Tull, Oldfield and Alan Parsons records. I also saw Judas Priest, Supertramp and Weather Report live. I appreciate the generosity and like how these old records are being reevaluated positively. I am a big Joni fan, and Hejira is my favourite record of hers. Her 1982 album wasn't up to her usual standards. I lived through an era of clueless music critics, especially at NME and Rolling Stone. They usually had no clue what they were reviewing. It is nice to listen to honest reevaluations from people with good taste.
Excellent as always. All the information and analysis is appreciated. I only noticed two missing pieces that I would have liked to hear. Camel The single factor Adrian Belew-Lone Rhino
I think Power Windows still has some great tracks. Why did you jump off? Did they start supporting exterminating people in the Middle East like Steven Wilson does? Greetings.
I loved Power Windows. Things did loose their shine after this but I stayed on board until the awful Test For Echo. I pretty much didn't like anything else they did until Clockwork Angels where there were some decent tracks.
Pekka Pohjola's "Urban Tango" is another great prog/fusion album released in 1982, you'd probably like it. Also got to mention Motörhead's "Iron Fist", much better than it's reputation.
I'd never heard of Jandek before, but after listening to your description I just had to hear for myself and OMG WHY DO I LIKE IT SO MUCH 😅😅😅 The atonality really is intriguing, even while it's practically unlistenable it still pulls you in.
I’d be interested in you guys reviewing Mick Karn’s Titles. I believe it was an ‘82 release. Nice to hear you praise Rush’s Signals. Subdivisions was huge. Keep it going!
DEFUNKT! THERMONUCLEAR SWEAT! DEFUNKT! THERMONUCLEAR SWEAT! DEFUNKT! THERMONUCLEAR SWEAT! The perfect blending of New York Art/New wave and blistering funk. As innovative as it comes.
I am probably a latecomer suggesting this, and the suggestion may violate some philosophical principle of the channel ("streaming"?), but I would love to have a Spotify playlist of the artists and albums mentioned in each episode. At age 68, I know very many of the artists and albums mentioned in these podcasts, but I am also appalled at how many I seem to have missed. Never too late to catch up!
Oh boy ... Rush - Signals. Absolutely my favourite Rush album. I like the synth-y period. Asia - Asia. A timeless classic. I remember buying this 1 week ahead of its UK release c/o a US import copy on vinyl. Still got it. Alan Parsons Project - My favourite APP. Such a beautiful record for me. And finally from my NWOBHM days - Diamond Head's Living On Borrowed Time. I was rocking out to this one again just a day or so ago. 1982-'tastic. 🙂
I also love Under Wraps - while the vast majority of Tull fans hate it. It's my favorite Tull album (I believe Martin Barre agreed), and I also love the synthesizer-driven stuff on A and Broadsword.
There's no such thing as a bad Tull album. All are great in their own peculiar ways and go on to prove that you can change gear and be valid, whatever the audience wants. I expect creative common sense from a politician, but not from a creative artist such as Ian Anderson and the very small coterie of real artists worth their salt.
I think you overlooked one album that I really like from a band that were always constant but never ever cool… Magnum’s Chase The Dragon. Obviously not a classic like On A Storyteller’s Night but with tracks like Soldier Of The Line, The Spirit, Sacred Hour, pretty strong and a taster of what was to come 🤩
Really glad you guys like Broadsword (although I guessed as much as Steve did an amazing job on the 40th anniversary remix). For me an absolutely underrated ‘Tull album. Signals is also my fav Rush LP, while Springsteen’s Nebraska is pretty high in my Top 100 albums. 🤩👌
It's not the best JT album, but it's a great album nontheless. It flustered the diehards, but whoever loves real music that challenges one's outlook (not necessarily prog) with a clean slate gets my vote every day.
Like Tim, I enjoy Asia as a shiny 80s pop group. They were also a huge part of the background music of my early childhood (Heat of the Moment was the number one hit when I was born). I can see how that super group would be such a prog disappointment though 😅
Who are you two, The Bird and Fortune of music discussion podcasts? Don't know any of your music and lots of the prog and rock music you discuss but it's all mildly entertaining.with Rich Tea and a cuppa and I appreciate the The Dreaming, Sextet, Pornography, Sulk, Glassworks and Virginia Astley shout outs. One question. Why is Tim so shiny? Keep it up chaps. Nice!
Signals was the goldilocks blend of guitar and synths in the Rush sound. Because it was fat analogue sounds that Geddy was actually playing, rather than the sequencers and samples on the later 80s albums.
Philip Glass over Benny Hill? Wow: Tim's got to go into soundtracks. And liking "Under Wraps", wraps it up beautifully for me. Then again,1982: What a year: The Dreaming, Five Miles Out, Signals, Broadsword and the Beast.
I bought Oldfield's Guilty. The vinyl has a blue colour! Loved 'Buggles', especially the first one, and yet I don't like Drama from Yes at all. Not a fan of '80s Joni Mitchell but Chinese Cafe/Unchained Melody is great. To set the record straight: The Hissing Of Summer Lawns > Hejira.
“Talking about music is the new music”-comment of the episode. Correct pronunciation of Reich is with the soft “sh”. I had a college roommate who was deeply offended when I played Asia on his turntable even though he was there to hear it and he never had a problem with me using his stereo when it was music he liked 😂.
Yeah, Paul was perfect for those early, uncompromising Maiden albums, his tone was really unique from other metal vocalists. Those first two Maiden albums completely rewired my brain, as far as heavy, blistering, mind blowing musicianship!
Great discussion. I can't believe for as much as I love all things Steven Wilson I haven't tuned into an episode of The Album Years before now. I'll definitely enjoy listening to your back catalog. In 1982 I was still very much into Brian Eno, but was no longer listening to new Tangerine Dream. Laurie Anderson's Big Science was one of my highlights that year. As was Glassworks. Asia's release was perhaps my biggest disappointment. (A case of misguided expectations perhaps.) I was surprised you didn't mention Avalon or The Nightfly. I was no fan of metal back then. It took Porcupine Tree to start opening up my ear that genre. I'll have to check out Diamond Head and Venom. 'Not so sure about Jandek. ;-)
I hate all the music you’ve both made, produced and remastered. I really enjoy the podcast. So there is one of me out here. Keep up the good podcasts :)
Watch the 1985 Album Years video - Steven does say he has quite mixed feelings on Power Windows especially in regards to the production. As a child of the 80s I agree with you I love PW.
Regarding Signals, I'm of the opposite to what Steven and Tim state, and I know it's a positive fave of a lot of Rush fans. For me, this was the first album I was slightly disappointed with. I found some of the tracks were quite weak and felt the album was a bit all over the place. Also, Grace Under Pressure was not up their either for me whereas Power Windows I found truly superb.I haven't played Signals for years. Maybe a revisit may give a different perspective.
Great episode again. Surprised that Missing Persons - Spring Session M wasn't mentioned. Basically has a bunch of members of Frank Zappa in it with a female singer doing cool pop tunes.
A book called "The quintessential albums from The Album Years"? You know you want to... Great last episode! PS: just listened to a random Jandek song and had enough...
I'm like Tim, I know the name Jandek but have never checked the music. Will do that now, I hope he sounds like Steven's impersonation or I'm going to be very disappointed. 🙂
I'd stretch the incredible run of Rush albums to include Grace Under Pressure and Power Windows, but I grew up in the 80s. I feel there are no weak songs in that run. 40 minutes is the perfect length for a Rush album. Hold Your Fire is when they started to put too many songs on each album for no reason other than to fill the 55-60 minute CD time. Chop Second Nature and Tai Shan off of it and it's more tolerable.
Jandek a precursor to Buckethead, Current 93, Omar Rodriguez-Lopez, King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard and Motorpsycho. edit: also Tangerine Dream and Frank Zappa How many albums can I release?
Thank you for admitting "I don't like it, at all" about Asia. Frankly, it s*cks. I almost bought that turkey when it came out, but fortunately, the store was playing it over the PA system, and I thought, YUCK, how can it contain so many good artists and be such dreck! Needless to say, I did not buy it. But I still couldn't escape it, since it was played relentlessly on FM radio.
0:31 "Notoriously ignorant when it comes to metal music" but plays in a rock/metal band and having heard all the metal albums on the list but Priest. Steven you wolly. :D At least listen to Stained Class and especially the song Beyond the Realms of Death. P.S. It's weird that it hasn't been a mention of Scorpions - Blackout album, which is considered by many one of their best.
LOLOL if anything, Power Windows is actually a stripped down production after Grace Under Pressure. It's far more organic and the synths feel far more in balance. At least listen to the album.
Eberhard is in one track of The Dreaming, and it is beautiful!
I truly love Signals, a perfect record. Countdown brings tears to my eyes. When I think about 1982, Signals is the soundtrack of that year... "in the high school halls"..
Countdown my fav 🎉

Camel The single factor
Adrian Belew-Lone Rhino
We did discuss The Single Factor, but dropped it from the final edit. I think Lone Rhino is great, but SW doesn't know it.
Signals is one of my favorite Rush albums, I also love Grace Under Pressure too, Power Windows is where I jumped off the Rush train.
The opposite to me, but hey, were all different in our tastes, which is great. I jumped off after Presto and Hold The Fire is just at the bottom.
I think Power Windows still has some great tracks. Why did you jump off? Did they start supporting exterminating people in the Middle East like Steven Wilson does? Greetings.
GUP is my favourite Rush album.
@pattardn It's a fine album, which I enjoy more than Signals. It's not one I would put in the top tier though.
Saw Phillip Glass when he did shows to promote Glassworks. Wonderful concert.
I'd never heard of Jandek before, but after listening to your description I just had to hear for myself and OMG WHY DO I LIKE IT SO MUCH 😅😅😅 The atonality really is intriguing, even while it's practically unlistenable it still pulls you in.
1. Listening to jandek now ! Not a bad impersonation. Right up my alley. Tim , think of him as Jason Molina’s dad .
That's the best Jandek chat I've ever heard.
Sounds like goth ambient music😊
So happy you guys played my Glassworks review! I loved the comparison you made between Glass and Reich, wonderful episode, thank you!
The 1st Asia was ace, one of the best supergroups ever. I saw them live in 82 and they really blew my mind 🙌
I’d be interested in you guys reviewing Mick Karn’s Titles. I believe it was an ‘82 release. Nice to hear you praise Rush’s Signals. Subdivisions was huge.
Keep it going!
Great Neo-Prog chat too. Excellent points about the time and the genre. 👍
The Paul Di'Anno Maiden albums are big favourite's from the NWOBHM period. Paul recently passed too of course, very sadly. Metal Legend!
DEFUNKT! THERMONUCLEAR SWEAT! DEFUNKT! THERMONUCLEAR SWEAT! DEFUNKT! THERMONUCLEAR SWEAT! The perfect blending of New York Art/New wave and blistering funk. As innovative as it comes.

SIGNALS JUST HITS DIFFERENT
Gentlemen! You have done it again! Great show. Thank you!
I also love Under Wraps - while the vast majority of Tull fans hate it. It's my favorite Tull album (I believe Martin Barre agreed), and I also love the synthesizer-driven stuff on A and Broadsword.

Another superb evening of music talk... over a lovely cup of dark roast coffee. Life is good! Appreciate being put onto GLASSWORKS. Thanks, as always.
Enjoying this series very much.
The Dreaming , all the way. An unbelievable album
Pretty good impression of Jandek! Also agree with Rush- Signals. Another great podcast.
I was sooo lucky go see Glass live around the time of Glassworks....whooo...religious experience.
And, even more so, watching and listening to Koyannisqatsi>
First saw Rush on the Signals tour at Wembley . . fabulous gig
Indeed. Signals - in my top 5 Rush albums of all time. Timeless.
Great podcast. Again!
THE. BEST. PODCAST!
This was a nice departure from election coverage. I think of all of these episodes of this show, this one was the funniest. You guys had me laughing.
I haven't watched it yet! Does Steven crack any jokes about how he loves ethnic cleansing in the Middle East?
"It's good!" Yes, I really enjoy the show.
Glassworks blew my mind when i discovered it. Weirdly via the Richard Gere movie, Breathless! (1983)
Wrong year of course but Judas Priest's 1981 album Point of Entry is one I bought back in the day and still enjoy.
Great impression of Jandek Steven. Hahaha
Phew! Yes, white eagle is up there amongst the greatest pieces of electronic music ever. I thought you were going to slate it for a second then.
One very important album this year that was missed. The concerts in china.
Ben Mink's playing on "Losing It" made me find the other Canadian prog trio FM and their synth stuff on "Surveillance" definitely influenced Geddy.
What about Lou Reed's _The Blue Mask_ ? Nobody mentioned it, it's one of Reed's best records.
oh thank Dog you didn't trash my favourite Rush album. I would never have forgiven you.
under wraps is great, its the jethro album ive liked the most from the ones ive heard
It's not the best JT album, but it's a great album nontheless. It flustered the diehards, but whoever loves real music that challenges one's outlook (not necessarily prog) with a clean slate gets my vote every day.
Seems like saved the best for last!
Like Tim, I enjoy Asia as a shiny 80s pop group. They were also a huge part of the background music of my early childhood (Heat of the Moment was the number one hit when I was born). I can see how that super group would be such a prog disappointment though 😅
Smells like 1982
Oops, nearly forgot - 5 Miles Out - another good one. Taurus II is a great side 1 for me.
very strong fun comments
Totally agree about the Permanent Waves, Moving Pictures, Signals run, my favourite Rush period by far
I really miss Sheffield Steel by Joe Cocker. Otherwise, great picks!

Philip Glass over Benny Hill? Wow: Tim's got to go into soundtracks. And liking "Under Wraps", wraps it up beautifully for me.
Then again,1982: What a year: The Dreaming, Five Miles Out, Signals, Broadsword and the Beast.
After this I demand the "Koyaanisqatsi" movie be reset to a Benny Hill stock tune.
I'm sure AI can do it.
Please. PLEASE. PLEASE !!!

I had a college roommate who was deeply offended when I played Asia on his turntable even though he was there to hear it and he never had a problem with me using his stereo when it was music he liked 😂.
Signals still my favourite Rush album
RIP Paul Dianno.

Avalon is discussed in an earlier 1982 episode. We also talk about The Nightfly (in less detail).
I hate all the music you’ve both made, produced and remastered. I really enjoy the podcast. So there is one of me out here. Keep up the good podcasts :)
😂
Hate is a very strong word to use lol
10 out of 10 for this episode! You could have done better if you rated the Rush album higher! 😂
The Rush album Steven meant to say was Hold Your Fire. That's where the keyboards got to be too much. Power Windows was perfection.
Watch the 1985 Album Years video - Steven does say he has quite mixed feelings on Power Windows especially in regards to the production. As a child of the 80s I agree with you I love PW.
Golden age of wireless is absolutely amazing 🎉🎉🎉
The finale of Grendel should have been titled Apocalypse in 4/4.
Great choices for most influential...such an impossible choice.
Tony the tiger says 'grrrrrrrreat show'.
Regarding Signals, I'm of the opposite to what Steven and Tim state, and I know it's a positive fave of a lot of Rush fans. For me, this was the first album I was slightly disappointed with. I think Nebraska is Bruce’s best album.

@@isashax Listen to "Nancy Sings" off this album, it's genuinely one of the most haunting and beautiful songs you will ever hear.
@DavidSGrop will try to, but his voice... ugh, no...
@@isashax Give it a go, you'll be pleasantly surprised ;)

Funny...Reactor, Hawks and Doves, etc are big faves of mine.
Especially Reactor! Rockin' and loose!
@ mashed potatoes!
Steven, I often cannot tell if you're just fucking with us.
I nearly skipped over the Jandek portion. Thank God I didn’t 🤣🤣🤣
Jandek a precursor to Buckethead, Current 93, Omar Rodriguez-Lopez, King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard and Motorpsycho.
edit: also Tangerine Dream and Frank Zappa
How many albums can I release?
Bradford On Avon. Nice village.
Would it be fair to induct Rush into the drinking game? Bonus points if you drink their very own beer whenever they come up!
White Eagle by TD, I love that album ❤
Asia were dreadful - Wetton sounds like Barry Manilow.
His last band was the sublime U.K , now they deserved the fame that Asia got !
I really love what Tim said about Howe, greetings from Chile. Love for both.
Defenders > Screaming
SW going full on Jandeck improv might be the funniest shit I have ever seen
Judas Priest
Steven not liking the Asia album just made me sad.
Thank you for admitting "I don't like it, at all" about Asia. Frankly, it s*cks. I agree Twelfth Night was very special (not as self-conscious, yup). RIP Geoff Mann. Good god, that Jandek sounds HORRIBLE! 😆
If Åkerfeldt has some free time, you could invite him to talk about metal albums
0:31 "Notoriously ignorant when it comes to metal music" but plays in a rock/metal band and having heard all the metal albums on the list but Priest. Steven you wolly. :D At least listen to Stained Class and especially the song Beyond the Realms of Death.

👍
I'm with you. I hated Asia
Always found Signals pretty weak overall, doesn't compare to MP or GUP...they were soon to nosedive after this.
I picked up a bunch of CDs by Jandek about 10 years ago for quarter each. My tastes tend towards the unusual, but I found them unlistenable
Thank God there is someone out there with some sense. I love all things Steven Wilson but the Jandek stuff is just awful !
What a disappointment you don't like or even don't know Screaming For Vengeance..... Electric Eye is one of the best metal songs ever
So much propaganda to these English pop albums.
Wake up, there's a world out there!
LOLOL if anything, Power Windows is actually a stripped down production after Grace Under Pressure. It's far more organic and the synths feel far more in balance. At least listen to the album.
Your microphone volume management sucks.
Why do they talk so fast? Are they in a hurry?
