One thing I really like about Jake as a feminist is that he never acts like he knows everything about the subject. A lot people trying to defend a cause like feminism can often act like they know everything on the subject or speak for all women kind, but Jake doesn’t. But Jake shows that it’s okay not to know everything but that all we need is the willingness to learn and the willingness to stand up for what’s right

People constantly say there can never be a show as funny as The Office again because people are “too sensitive” and you “can’t make offensive jokes anymore” … I loved The Office and when I first watched it it _was_ in fact one of the funniest shows I watched. But a smaller portion of the humor actually did go too far or relied on the actual offensiveness of the joke to be the humor rather than Michael & others just being ignorant or having no filter. Especially jokes about sexualizing women and making them uncomfortable. That was considered humor just because… But then I watched Brooklyn 99, and I saw that it’s SO much funnier than The Office and it just about never made a single offensive joke. Humor is not based on controversy and this show cracked that code perfectly.
The Office is a show of its time and I think we can still understand that some of the humor was funny _because_ it was based on things people used to say or believe, and we can still like the show, but it needs to be understood that this kind humor can be left in the 2000’s. We’ve grown enough that shows like B99 can be wildly successful in a new and improved social/political climate. B99 supremacy >>>>>

I love the fact that Brooklyn 99 has episodes focusing on heavier subjects. Like how Captain Holt was treated as a gay black police officer, how Terry experience racism, the pressure of coming out and the subtle and not-so subtle ways that gender inequality is still prevalent. Sadly a lot of people don’t see reality and think that just because there are successful people of minority groups it means that there’s equality which is far from the truth.

That line about being followed into the bathroom at 1:57 hits different after I just rewatched Top Gun (1986). The "seduction" scenes in that are TERRIFYING from the perspective of a lone female at a bar...being drunkenly "serenaded" by 50 testosterone-fueled dudes and then literally FOLLOWED INTO THE BATHROOM by the one who was most aggressive and got rejected.
Different times, for sure. Let's keep normalizing feminism. More Jake Peraltas and fewer Mavericks, please!!

There’s a guy at my work who wears a shirt saying “this is what a feminist looks like” maybe 3 days a week. He’s genuinely one of the most irritating, patronising and sexist people I’ve ever met. He constantly “boasts” about how he “knows women are smart and capable” and then makes gross and offensive jokes at their expense. He then says “it’s just a joke, I’m a feminist!!!” Like, if you really are a feminist, you don’t need to wear a fucking SHIRT saying that. Words are very supportive, but actions often do speak louder in this case. Brooklyn 99 is the perfect example of normalising men just being decent and supportive (and feminists) whilst also making it funny and highlighting it’s importance. Jake, I wish I could hang out with you ever day instead of that dickbag

Not surprising. It's like those 'nice guys,' who need to go out of their way tell you they're nice, and respect women. That's usually why no woman wants him, because women only date scum, or he's not attractive enough, or rich enough, and all women are superficial gold diggers. Because apparently that's how guys who respect women think about us.
They never seem to realize the truth. They're alone because, while women do often have these flaws, many simply have too much self respect. We don't want a whiney, hypocritical, passive agressive, sexist.

I love when characters are written realistically. Like when a character says something, then another character tells them it's offensive. They still mess up and make mistakes and offend people. It shows that they're human. The way that we know they're not a bad person is how they react when they get called out on that. Using Jake as an example, if he were to say or do something unknowingly sexist, racist, homophobic, etc. he wouldn't get upset about it. He would immediately apologize and put in the effort to change that behavior or not say it ever again.
This is the way that everyone should be. The more we see this in media, the more normalized it's going to be. Especially those in the majority. Because a lot of people don't mean to be offensive. They genuinely didn't know it was offensive. At least most of the people I know are more than happy to change some ways of thinking if they learn that they are being offensive. I think (or I hope) that most people are that way too. The problem is, is that when someone is correcting someone else, they see it as an attack on their character, so they get offended, and attack back. I think if we see more character like Jake in the media, it will be easier to make everyone else change.
