I look at exercises a little differently. Does the exercise mimic real world activity, like rowing a boat for example? In that example the back is heavily involved hinging at the hip not just contracting the lats. In trying to describe this I run into a semantic problem: although the lats attach at the back they are functionally an arm muscle, they close the arm angle in relation to the body. Back muscles are the long muscles that parallel the spine that work to extend the back. Bending at the hip while doing cable rows makes this a compound joint exercise as most real world activities are. Enough said, the choice is yours.
My credentials: I have a body and I use it.

a trainer at my gym told me to keep my back rounded for the entire exercise (so he wants me to be leaning forward like a shrimp), is that incorrect? your form seems more comfortable for the spine ngl

Like he says in the video you want your back muscles/abs to be active as much as possible while limiting spine movement. Once you start going up in weight, slouching forward will be increasing risk of injury to your spine.

I’d find a new trainer before he wrecks your lumbar spine.
