João foi baterista de vários combos mas se destacou nos anos '60 ao compor o famoso Brasil 66, do Sérgio Mendes. Depois tocou com Tom Jobim, Walter Wanderlei, e até na famosa Tijuana Brass. Acompanhou vários artistas, inclusive Frank Sinatra. Eis aí o resultado da influência do João Palma, uma fera chamada Rafael Barata.
