We should start with enhancing limbs and bones. Stronger Spines that break less, better legs, arms, etc. Then we could work on muscles, make them fatigue later then normal. Then start on eyes, ears, the senses in general. Then, after the brain is understanded, work on the brain.
That's not efficient. Civilization isn't a resource management video game, we are perfectly capable of tackling several issues at the same time. Also, if anything, the brain is precisely the thing that should be enhanced first. The higher the intelligence, the higher the capacity to solve bigger and more complex problems, like how to enhance other things. The thing is, the attempt of going beyond the therapeutic and into the enhancement territory is a great way of gaining further understanding of a complex system, like the brain. Finally, it turns out that we don't need to fully understand it to be able to enhance it well. Look up on brain enhancement technology, I remember reading once about a scientist that created a cybernetic hippocampus for mice that not only restored, but actually improved their memory and learning rate. He created a mathematical model of the neuronal activity of said sub-organ and then translated it into a silicon circuit to be implanted, without really knowing why it worked so well, so seamlessly and it's relationship with it's surrounding tissue.
As soon as you mentioned the TDCS, I was sold. Yes, yes, yes. I love learning, and making it more widely available, especially to scientists, would be incredible for the world as a whole.
Dear Apple, since I am forced to watch your entire advertisement before every youtube video, I am never again going to buy any apple product as a retaliation against the pain that I am forced to bear.
Awesome video Hank, you've just earned yourself another subscriber. I don't have any disabilities but I have a raging hard-on for the idea of humans transcending into a "higher" life form through the use of technology. This video is by far one of the best sources I've found on that topic.
I've been a fan of the Metal Gear video games since I was 7, and recently read Futuristic Violence and Fancy Suits. Transhumanism both excites and deeply terrifies me.
Wouldn't having that implant that reads your mind be a bit annoying? like if you were talking to a friend about coffee then suddenly a little robot brings you some coffee, then you think i don't want any coffee right now and then another one comes with more coffee... ...10 minutes later you're friend has walked away and you're yelling "NO MORE COFFEE!!!" with about 30 robots around you each holding a cup of coffee.... :I
If those "stimulation hats" are being used to train soldiers faster and are apparently safe and work, why aren't they being used in schools? Wouldn't it be a better application of the technology to have children learn quicker and be more intelligent? Maybe then we wouldn't have so many wars, negating the need to train those soldiers in the first place.
I think solid knowledge, without years of trial and error and the wisdom that comes from learning that actions have consequences, is at best foolish and at worse extremely dangerous. Children need to learn the value of knowledge, or they'll use it for childish things
True. But knowledge comes first before application, trial, success, error or consequence. We learn in school and apply in life. The broader and more comprehensive the knowledge the better we understand the world and people around us. I take it that was a quote?
CasMullac no, no quote. Well, I guess me. I said that. Anyway knowledge without moral guidance, and we know some children don't really develop that until they've reached a certain age, would be chaos. Knowledge is power and a kid may not know why he should use that power in a positive, constructive way. It'd be bedlam with a bunch of kids doing exactly what they want, just because they know how to. Not yet able to realize that just because they can, doesn't necessarily mean they should.
That has been said for centuries. Each generation learns more than the previous and we now learn more at school than some, a few hundred years ago, learnt in their entire life. A lot of what we learn today was once cutting edge and only knew and understood by a few. The things I did and made as a child to have fun and "cause trouble" were once cutting edge military technologies or only available to the rich or skilled. some of morality is intrinsic unless there are psychological issues. This can be seen in examples of children understanding fairness. Although it seems true empathy is something learned after 5-10 years (or something around there) Morality can be taught or molded and based upon societal and religious pressures. Although it can also be said that as intelligence increases, pressures such as those that religions exert begin to have less of an impact. This could be seen as evidence that knowledge itself can influence morality as people begin to understand more about the world they live in and the impact they have on it.
super strength- steroids super sight - binoculars or glasses super hearing- hearing aids or amplifiers super speed - electric scooter flying - jet packs heat resist - heat suit cold - heated clothing or high tech suits shooting fire - caroscene and matches underwater - scuba tanks and handheld propellers outer space - space suit We are all already Iron Men. We are already in the future
I wonder what this would do to professional sports. All of the leagues would almost definitely ban enhancements, but then new leagues that allow them would steal viewers because it would be so much more exciting
Would it be every one, though? Even if this kind of tech does become more affordable, it might still be too expensive for poor people. Which has pretty scary implications for society... imagine there not only being class divisions but class divisions between superhumans and normal humans...
Tuuliska I was talking about this phrase 0:47. And theoretically if every one is a supper hero then no body is, it beats the point of being called "supper", Superior to others.
Is anyone here really against Transhumanism? I mean, the only way you could think it's bad is if you think computers are bad, and you're replying to my comment, proving that your thinking is flawed. Let me explain, in a couple hundred years, we will have computers so powerful and effective that there will be no job that a human can do that a computer can't do better. This is true for everything, industry, art, you name it. Computers are already becoming more qualified than humans in many tasks, even driving. So what do you think will happen when computers do everything for us? There will no longer be any need for humans, society could go onward without us. Technology is evolving at a rate which biology can't keep up to. The only way to keep up with it, and survive as a species, is to aid our cognitive and physical abilities with technology. If you're still against transhumanism, then throw your computer into the garbage can and have fun getting left behind, society will not wait for you.
...wat? I'm just gonna respond simply because your statement about replying to your statement somehow means I'm flawed, as if your argument isn't, spited me. I have nothing against transhumanism, I simply think your arguments were pretty stupid and going back to your 2nd and 3rd line made me snap. Do you even computer science? Industry, sure computers will be able to do everything better than we can, but I'm a little skeptical on the art part. Computers can't think for themselves, they can't make art, since that's based on human subjectivity. Imitation of it, sure, but still, no no no. You can have a computer generate a drawing, but it still came from a person using an algorithm. As advanced as a computer can get, they still rely on us humans to function. Maybe they can generate a finite number of generic shit, but a real beauty with depth of meaning? Nope nope nope. I know art isn't the only thing you're talking about, but this goes for a lot of things as well. Basically anything that's subjective. If computers can do everything for us, society wouldn't go on without us. We are the society. Society would end. Holy Bologna you're a dumbass. You really sound like any non-Korean trying to tell someone how bright you are about Korea and whatever they come back with at you will be flawed when all you can say is Gangnam Style, K-PoP, and Kim Jong Il. Point is, you sound like you have no idea what you're talking about. If you do know computer science, you're just stupid or an amazing troll. Right-click with your mouse and click inspect element. There, see those words? That's how a fucking computer works. Specifically, how this TH-cam page works.
***** Do you believe in metaphysics? The big disagreement you and I have is this: "As advanced as a computer can get, they still rely on us humans to function." What if I told you this, before your children die, technology will be advanced enough to build an artificial brain, which imitates the function of a natural brain to the perfection. A brain which can imitate creativity (which is really not that complicated), reason for itself and be self aware. If you talked to a person, and then to this brain, you would have no way of telling which is the artificial one. If you disagree with this idea and believe it to be wrong, then you're implying that you believe that the human brain is not entirely calculable and not reproducible in a lab, which is the definition of metaphysics. Do you believe in metaphysics? I enjoyed reading your comment very much, I like your sense of humor, don't be offended by my opinion, and do note that I was directing my argument towards people against Transhumanism, and you clearly stated you are not one. Lastly, you said that machines rely on us humans to do their work, which is very untrue even today. Most modern machines are automated, which means they do their job without the need of a human, like a self driving car, or a Roomba. If a Roomba was solar powered and could dispose the garbage automatically, it would continue to work as long as it can, with or without humans. Kinda like Wall-e I am currently studying Engineering in computer technologies btw.
In my experience people who think it's a good idea to stick tons of computer bits into ourselves often ignore the fact that sticking computer bits into us will completely fail to solve fundamental problems we have, like greed.
The Obelisk Actually, that's not entirely accurate. To be clear, I'm all for implants to fix things like deafness and heart defects, and I eagerly await the day when technology allows us to replace lost limbs with mechanical versions that can be controlled as easily as the real deal. What I am wary of, however, is people who think that replacing perfectly healthy, functioning, and fine body parts with machines is something everyone should do, and is the next stage of human evolution. In my experience, these thought processes often operate on a sort of rule of cool, and don't really consider that most of the world's problems today (greed, overpopulation and starvation in developing nations, corruption, and religious intolerance to name a few) won't be solved by doing that.
@ 8:04 "Gets you excited, and not terrified..." FUCK, I want that fucking DBS shit, and I want it *NOW!*. Severe depression (helped by meds, but problem with me: I deal with sleep disorder that can range from sleeping way to much, to way too little), and as a result, employment... is kinda hard for me to come by. So I've no schedule, so I take my meds and start feeling relavity good, at which point I forget I need them, and repeat the cycle all over again. So bypass the pills, and hook me up with that!
***** Amen! My husband could really benefit from having one of those electrodes zapping his brain from time to time. Powerful meds, and symptoms still break through!
to be honest it might not be impossible. Now there are many research to prolong life, or even bring people back to life www.digitaltrends.com/cool-tech/reanima-project-brains/ i don't know whether it would work, but who knows
im okay with it, so long as external controll of said devices is NOT possible. as this would be the stepping stone of mind control (or consious body control) so yeah, so long as some some hacker p.o.s. cant make me kick kittens im all good with this XD
Nanobots sound great... assuming that there's not going to be exploitation for negative purposes. Still, I am excited. Assuming global warming doesn't escalate to a major problem before then.
Bionic limbs are massively progressing now A few weeks ago I saw someone with a robotic leg a few days later I saw about someone with a bionic hand that could crush steel with ease.
Quite honestly, I think to be human, and to live in modern society governed by technology, is to be transhumanist. Right now you're using technology to augment your natural abilities of communication..
Dude I'm scared as shit that the NSA is watching my every move ... I sure as hell won't be compromised 100% of the time by having robots in myself at any given time. Even if it tripled my life expectancy. NO. FUCKING. WAY.
Kenny Duran Mmm, that's a good question. Relative to what though? By interesting I presume you mean of relativistic vitality to a system, however, of what system?
Well, since you seem to have no self expressing thoughts that differ in sentence structure from my prior messages, I wouldn't say very interesting. That said, what in the world would the government inspect you for? While many people rationally exhibit symptoms of anxiety and fear when in unideal situations, such as near police officers, you seem to show it without being motivated, as if some guilt is eating you from the inside out. What could you possibly want to hide so badly that you would trade a tripling in life expectancy, advanced medicine that would cure paraplegics, and enhanced superhuman capabilities for hypothetical security? Nothing. In fact, I bet I couldn't tell your circumstances apart from a group of 15 year olds. Here's your average day: You wake up, masturbate, take a shower, eat breakfast, either go to school or work, lunch, come home, post comments on youtube while taking a shit, maybe do homework, maybe dinner, masturbate, and go to sleep. You aren't interesting, and if you tell me you are, then you are even less interesting. When I asked you what I was relatively important to, I was being serious. I wanted to analyze the circumstances to give myself something to do, but you don't even bother to make something constructive of that, despite it having been your question I was attempting to answer. Maybe I came off a bit aggressive when I asked you how interesting you thought you were, but that was a very sincere, poorly worded question. Let me restructure it: How would (hypothetical) government monitoring of you through futuristic nanobots ever negatively affect you? If that still seems a bit aggressive, I'm sorry, but I'm just trying to be as anodyne as possible with my question.
I like how transhumanism is presented as a possibility when, if you think about it, it’s just the future instead of a possibility. We will definitely integrate with technology and people who don’t want to will just be ignored. Technology works that way today, we haven’t reverted back to antiquated forms of technology on a large scale.
The robosuits have millions of practical applications. From rehab to rescue. Imagine if every fireman had something that would augment his strength and let him lift something twice his size.
I want gauntlets that have lightsaber claws and automatic 12-gauge shotguns that fire explosive shells and an exosuit that has laser nipples and a flame-thrower butt.
Something like this could possibly make a huge difference in my life. I have Spastic Diplegia, and while I've always pushed to do everything anyone else does, it's caused arthritis in most of my lower joints. A viable exoskeleton could make all the difference for someone like me, and for many others.
Thanks, thats really cool of you. I'd definitely try it out if there is a relatively safe one available, but I don't have any of the know-how to make a DIY one.
Look up HAL (Hybrid Assistive Limb) technology, it's an exoskeletal suit designed to enhance or assist people with conditions such as yours. It's even in use today and many people with some paralysis or nerve damage go through therapy with the HAL suits. It's definitely worth a look.
This kind of happened to one of my friends once. It generally happens because that is either a fake account by a person hoping to spread viruses, or the account that posted it got hacked.
All of this would be so cool! I'm not sure how I feel about neural implants though. Nano bots I would be ok with if the were used specifically for medical purposes, and dissolved after awhile. Technology is getting so amazing
i remember first hearing nanobots in the metal gear solid game back when i was kid in 98. hideo kojima really did make a good prophetic outlook on the future
I know of one for sale that has been approved, also there is also many DIY headsets. This is all done externally through a headset and not devices inside our bodies. I'll find you the site where they sell this.
That thing about stimulating people's brains to learn better really gave me hope for future generations. 1 year of school, 8 months of university, and our kids' kids' kids will be set for life! Yay! Also, this makes me think of the Point of View gun from Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy. I want one soo bad! when we get the tech to make one, I want every global leader to have one so we can have world peace already!
Here, have a cookie: www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0165027014002702 Look up the section 3.1, "Accelerated Learning". DARPA has managed to increase 2.3 times the learning rate of their rookie soldiers in the skill of rifle marksmanship through the use of brain computer intefaces. Pretty neat stuff, except for all the super-soldier shit rather than stuff that actually helps people, but still, the potential for good is there.
3:18 That's a good point that transhumanists like to ignore. Technology tends to become obsolete, and fusing it to a human could quickly resign that human to go the way of the floppy disc.
Obsidian is a form of "Igneous Rock" or Volcanic Glass. Just because it's black (to us) does not mean that it absorbs all light. If I were to guess as to why, I would say that perhaps it's because of it's high carbon-silicate content that while it may absorb most visible wavelengths of light, a significant amount of that light is still deflected off of the silicate structure. Have you ever seen a shiny black car? Look up "Photons". WikiPedia has a decent entry for Both Photons and Obsidian
Speaking as a disabled person the idea that I could one day have normal body function and maybe even extend my life so I might live a respectable number of years as a normal person free of pain and be able to have a normal life is one of the main reason i can manage to keep going that hope of a better life is very important to me and it's a very exciting time
A friend of mine had an electrical impulse thingy implanted in his brain to try to help him with his cluster headaches, Result: Not that much improvement, the loss of movement in one hand and impaired movement in the other. He is slowly recovering his movement, but it's good to remember that these brain implants can be risky business!
I think it's great that we are using technology to advance the human species in ways that nature has never done before, the only thing that worries me is at what point will we go too far? It's great to think that everyone will be superheroes and iron man one day, but what made iron man so great was that underneath all the armor and the suit, he was still Tony Stark. I completely approve of using technology to improve ourselves, as long as we don't lose our humanity.
Another thing they could do once the tech is known well enough is combine the exoframes with the medical tech of hospitals to monitor a soldier's vitals and administer battlefield medicine whenever the soldier gets injured or sick or at least deaden the pain enough so that said soldier could get back to the base to be treated. I actually got this idea from an anime called Mobile Fighter G Gundam where the main character uses what is known as the Mobile Tray System which not only allows the pilot to control the mech suit but also monitors his or her vitals.
My friends call me iron man all the time. My heart failed a year and a half ago and a Left Ventricular Assist Device keeps me alive now. Seeing an episode on growing organs would be nice.
Hi there, I'm 15 and I thoroughly appreciate your recommendation. Subject selection is coming up and I'm confused as to what I'd like to do. Originally I was leaning towards theoretical physics but decided that it was a little far fetched. At the moment I'm Just looking at something a little more simple, for example, mechanical engineering. Bio medical engineering sounds awesome. :)
^^ Exactly It's amusing and rather amazing to be walking around some poor Nicaraguan village, with houses made of aluminum sheeting, dirt floors, and no running water, and see an elderly local lady emerge talking on a cell phone. Once technology is developed and becomes popular, everyone soon has access to it, or so it has been till now.
5:18. but then theres no difference between thinking of it and getting it. like you think of moving your arm, then dicide you actually dont want, and then its already too late.
The Omni and the Oculus Rift goes together nicely, but I was thinking about the way they did it in the anime, where they stimulated the nerve cells or something. Without the brain frying stuff, of course!
Sarif was right about one thing. It's in our nature to want to rise above our limits. Think about it. We were cold, so we harnessed fire. We were weak, so we invented tools. Every time we met an obstacle, we used creativity and ingenuity to overcome it. The cycle is inevitable. In the past, we've had to compensate for weaknesses, finding quick solutions that only benefit a few. But what if we never need to feel weak or morally conflicted again? What if the path Sarif wants us to take enables us to hold on to higher values with more stability? One thing is obvious. For the first time in history, we have a chance to steal fire from the gods. To turn away from it now - to stop pursing a future in which technology and biology combine, leading to the promise of a Singularity - would mean to deny the very essence of who we are. No doubt the road to get there will be bumpy, hurting some people along the way. But won't achieving the dream be worth it? We can become the gods we've always been striving to be. We might as well get good at it. - Deus Ex Human Revolution
I have built a tin iron man replica suit, it shoots lasers (laser pens) from the palms, like iron man, these lasers can pop balloons!! I also use self built 'google glasses' with a larger display in the helmet it has disability accessibility so it will read text messages and emails and call and answer, also it will use maps and google, and a camera! Much like Jarvis, it has a wireless hotspot, I have foam bullets and bb bullets that shoot from my wrists/arms, it has live recording (audio/video) to my computer! My problem is, no propulsion:p

Awesome video Hank, you've just earned yourself another subscriber. I don't have any disabilities but I have a raging hard-on for the idea of humans transcending into a "higher" life form through the use of technology. This video is by far one of the best sources I've found on that topic.
You know what this means? Well finally be able to communicate with our dogs!
I only listen to the voices in my dog, the cat is crazy....

Awesome
I'm sure that the chip doesn't exclusively find words and send commands, but finds words and makes sure that the thought was deliberate.
That would be funny as hell
Just think go away and then the robots would go away.
Or think off.
Although it seems true empathy is something learned after 5-10 years (or something around there)
Morality can be taught or molded and based upon societal and religious pressures. Although it can also be said that as intelligence increases, pressures such as those that religions exert begin to have less of an impact. This could be seen as evidence that knowledge itself can influence morality as people begin to understand more about the world they live in and the impact they have on it.
The amount of awesomeness about what's coming and what's already existing in this era makes me want to do a dance.

I moment I learned about nano technology that was the first thing I was thinking, glad someone is already on top of that!
Fuck yes, we'll be able to play Call of Duty Advanced Warfare in real life!
You nerd
I wonder what this would do to professional sports. All of the leagues would almost definitely ban enhancements, but then new leagues that allow them would steal viewers because it would be so much more exciting
And with self repairing nanobots you could use actual weapons and the nanobots would heal the injured people.
wow, truly, seriously amount of efforts are putting in each episode of these Shows.
If every one is a super hero. then nobody is...
Become a super-villain.
***** What is "The Incredibles"?
Tuuliska Oh geez. "Things Fall Apart" here we come.
I would totally become a robot... but only after I lived out my life, of course!
Why not just be reborn into a new body?
Hanks quips make all of these videos just that more entertaining A+
This all made me think of metal gear.
*NANOMACHINES, SON.*
The big disagreement you and I have is this: "As advanced as a computer can get, they still rely on us humans to function."
What if I told you this, before your children die, technology will be advanced enough to build an artificial brain, which imitates the function of a natural brain to the perfection.
Kinda like Wall-e
I am currently studying Engineering in computer technologies btw.
I'm interested in the potential benefits, but skeptical that a device planted in our brains to read our thoughts wont be misused eventualy.
Has anyone thought about photovoltaic tatoos? or Algae tatoos which produce food directly absorbed by skin ?
What if you're already iron man? ;)
It's almost 2020. We need an update on this video.
I wish I was born 100 years in the future
to be honest it might not be impossible. Now there are many research to prolong life, or even bring people back to life
www.digitaltrends.com/cool-tech/reanima-project-brains/
i don't know whether it would work, but who knows
i was just watching ghost in the shell lol
I love that people are focusing on helping others to live in a world that isn't always designed for them.
im okay with it, so long as external controll of said devices is NOT possible. as this would be the stepping stone of mind control (or consious body control) so yeah, so long as some some hacker p.o.s. cant make me kick kittens im all good with this XD
Who else here's a transhumanist?
Evan Bell No one can stop progress.
Evan Bell Im a human. for now.........
Quite honestly, I think to be human, and to live in modern society governed by technology, is to be transhumanist. Right now you're using technology to augment your natural abilities of communication..
Evan Bell Yes its a step, just like the internet. We live in a society governed by technology, but we want the technology to live and govern in us!
I believe the next step to affect society as a whole will be wearables and ARs such as Hololens. Then we wait for robotics and nanotech to rise.
Dude I'm scared as shit that the NSA is watching my every move ... I sure as hell won't be compromised 100% of the time by having robots in myself at any given time. Even if it tripled my life expectancy. NO. FUCKING. WAY.
How interesting do you think you are?
Kenny Duran How important do you think you are?
Mmm, that's a good question. Relative to what though? By important I presume you mean of relativistic vitality to a system, however, of what system?
I have been a transhumanist for years now, since my childhood actually.
I have metal implants in my body, not to mention I'm always interfacing with some kind of smart device.
ha my first video i watched in 2014
Omg u go that long without watching vids
i can already see the cybermen lining people up to be "Upgraded"
The robosuits have millions of practical applications. From rehab to rescue. Imagine if every fireman had something that would augment his strength and let him lift something twice his size.
Fuck firemen, I want to punch a forest.
I love the digital camera analogy. I'm surprised Hank only vaguely touched on the cybernetic, mind-controlled arms that are already being implemented.
6:56 The technology shown in that photo is actually transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) rather than tDCS.
I get more excited about science every video I watch of yours!
It's been 5 years WHERE'S MY SUPER SUIT!
They did a 60 minutes special on Brain gate technologies and it was fascinating! A paralyzed woman was moving a robotic arm purely by brain signals.
This kind of happened to one of my friends once. It generally happens because that is either a fake account by a person hoping to spread viruses, or the account that posted it got hacked.
I'm both terrified and excited for all of these things!
just started watching this channel, you do learn a lot.
All of this would be so cool! I'm not sure how I feel about neural implants though. Nano bots I would be ok with if the were used specifically for medical purposes, and dissolved after awhile. Technology is getting so amazing
When moving myself I've always wondered about telacinous (moving stuff with my mind). He should do a show on that! Well super human abilities, cool!
The name of all these companies sound exactly like something from a futuristic world. it makes me VERY happy.
You should do an episode on the new Call of Duty game Advanced Warfare about how realistic/unrealistic the game mechanics and "exoskeletons" are
i remember first hearing nanobots in the metal gear solid game back when i was kid in 98. hideo kojima really did make a good prophetic outlook on the future
The figure shown for tDCS actual represents TMS and an old single coiled one at that- tend to be butterfly shaped dual-coils now. :)
Here, have a cookie: www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0165027014002702
Look up the section 3.1, "Accelerated Learning".
I want to be iron man, just because he is also very rich
^^ Exactly
It's amusing and rather amazing to be walking around some poor Nicaraguan village, with houses made of aluminum sheeting, dirt floors, and no running water, and see an elderly local lady emerge talking on a cell phone.
Once technology is developed and becomes popular, everyone soon has access to it, or so it has been till now.
You should do a video on the Emotiv Insight- If you don't know what it is, look it up.
Highly interested in the DBS, because frankly, anything that can help reign in and stop these blasted seizures is fine by me.
5:18. but then theres no difference between thinking of it and getting it. like you think of moving your arm, then dicide you actually dont want, and then its already too late.
The Omni and the Oculus Rift goes together nicely, but I was thinking about the way they did it in the anime, where they stimulated the nerve cells or something. Without the brain frying stuff, of course!
Id take an eye that can see infrared and uv
Glad you're not one of those people who shy away from these things.
i just love this show i never tire of it
u forgot to add “before he murdered his girlfriend” about the fastest man who runs on no legs guy

Everything about this just feels so right!
