It's fairly rare to see the French represented in a WWI movie made outside of France. Despite the French representing roughly 85% of the western front in WWI, the Allies are usually shown from the perspective of the British or even the Americans( it's even rarer to see the Russians, the italians and the Romanians- but theyre on different fronts). The crazy losses sufferred here explains why the French would be so unwilling to fight 22 years later. So few Young Frenchmen of 1910's lived on to become fathers that French mentalities evolved to be defensive, Build walls, fortifications, Tanks with loads of armour and small crews, don't do any ambitious attacks, anything to spare lives.
A lot of trauma too, avoid it all, push the war away as much as you can to avoid losing millions of the people again, adding to the economical stagnation, and the fact that on the other side the Germans were in need of revenge since they had lost WW1, well it kinda explains the disaster that it was

I was watching "Death on the Nile" with my fiance, & usually got all excited at the start of the opening scene [WW1] to try & figure out if it was the British or Germans; the rifles looked more like Mausers at a glance & the helmets were larger than the British plates so I blurted out "Germans," & then it turned out to be the French & i felt like a big dum dum & was like "Oh ya, that makes sense"

Cotton and other material for clothes was one of these things, hence the recycling of old uniforms. When he found all those dead bodies and said "stupid boys: they took their masks off too soon", those men had been killed by gas. The tanks were the French St.Chamond type. Shooting at tanks did actually have a point, because their armour was so thin and of such low quality that the impact of a bullet on the outside would cause splinters to fly off the inside, injuring the crew. Tank crews often wore leather or chainmail mask to protect themselves from this effect. The figure of 17 million dead was for the whole war, not just on the Western Front (depicted here). There was also the Eastern Front, where Germany fought Russia to the point where the latter collapsed and the Communist revolution happened in 1917. There was also fighting in northern Italy between Italy and Austria, (the Italians were on the Allied side, the Austrians on the Germans'), around the Bosphorus (British vs Turkish) and at sea. It's not entirely true that almost no ground was gained on the Western Front. The German offensive of 1918 pushed the Allies back a considerable distance, by the use of new weapons and tactics, but it also exhausted the last of Germany's strength, and the allied counter-attack pushed the Germans back alomost to their own country's pre-war border. Ironically, the peace treaty forced on the Germans at the end of WWI set up the conditions that led to WWII. The US president urged the victorious allies to reform Germany and set it on a different course, but the French and British wanted revenge, and insisted on punishing Germany with crippling reparations payments. These destabilised the German economy and led to the resentment and chaos from which Hitler emerged by promising to restore German pride and status.
In fact the peace treaty was not humiliating, far more less than the peace treaties against France, for example, in 1870. The peace treaty was an excuse for Germany.

At night they launch what are called illumination shells in order to see. The light from these shells makes the landscape look surreal. Towards the end the dead were buried in mass graves. In war it is the smallest things that matter that are overlooked in peace. The unit in the end may mutiny when ordered into battle.

In combat bodies have to be safely recovered and buried as soon as possible to keep diseases from coming from the dead bodies and infecting the live people. Body retrieval should not interfere with the main combat mission or unit readiness. Bodies were normally not collected from No-Man's land because both sides would shoot at anyone moving around in No-Man 's land. Don't forget the rotting smells that cannot be captured in war movies.

Ladies, please check out the 1930 version & 1979 version as well. They are each good anti-war movies. Erich Marie Remarque was a brilliant author. Kat , in the 1930 version died shortly after the filming wrapped. The director used actual German WW1 veterans in making the movie as extras.

First is Sling Blade which is an Academy Award winner starring Billy Bob Thornton, who was married to Angelina Jolie before Brad Pitt. The second is Thirteen Lives which is based on a true story and directed by Ron Howard who did Apollo 13 which you have already reacted to.
My great-grandfather was drafted in 1916 at the age of 17, still a child at the time, because he was only considered to be 25 years old, yes, he was a German soldier and it had massively traumatized him and he later survived captivity in Siberia after World War II and was taken there in 1955 returned home and only came home to die a year later he passed away

If they could have rebelled against the General ordering the last attack, so many lives would have been saved. The sailors of the German Navy rebelled against being sent out to die, in 1918 in Wilhelmshaven and helped end the war.

This is a really terrible version of the classic book, which changes the story considerably and completely misses the point of the book. The 1978 movie, despite being very dated, is FAR superior. A better ww1 movie is Gallipoli and the 2015 tv series of the same name is even better than the movie. The 6 part 2016 BBC adaptation of War and Peace (set from 1805 - 1815) is superb. One of the greatest love stories ever written (with the napoleonic wars as the setting) and a great adaptation. It also has one of the best soundtracks ever created.
I 100% agree with you that this version of the novel is just an inaccurate portrayal of the German’s perspective of the late stages of WWI and fails to make a point on what an actual anti-war message should be about.
I haven't seen this movie yet, but my Dad has, he actually read the book when he was in school and when Netflix started making this into a movie, I showed him the trailer and when he started watching it, he said it's exactly like how the book was. Plus, he knows a lot about World War 2 history and he also likes watching other World War 2 movies, like Saving Private Ryan, Schindler's List, Fury, and 1917, yes, I know that movie is set in WW1 and we liked it, but I have watched Dunkirk with him and can I be honest, me and him didn't really like the movie that much, I know it was directed my Christopher Nolan and it's set in the WW2 period, but it's our opinion.
