George Kennedy joined the army in 43 as a private. He was a combat veteran with bronze stars. In the fifties he reached the rank of captain. He at first was technical advisor for the Phil Silvers show for any questions about the Army. He wanted to continue with an Army career but due to a back in injury was discharged. It was Phil Silvers who helped him get a career started.
When GK says, "....thats what I love about the 707, the only thing she can't do is read!", love how he lets the cigar dip up and down in his mouth. Looks so cool! Almost made me wanna take up cigar smoking.
But All of a Sudden Mechanical Patroni is Now A Pilot! 🥴🤔 On Airport 79..where the plot was written by a Two Year Old …Let me see. Plane gets shot at..they land..and get back on the plane..to get shot at again..🤔🥴
Be an retired Air Force aircraft mechanic myself, this was my favorite scene in the movie. The story he told is true. We had a plane come back, the person did not get sucked out he got jammed in the sexton window that blew out. we did have to clean the cockpit after the investigation. not good scene.
This happened on a recent Southwest flight between Philadelphia and Dallas! There was no explosive aboard! A malfunction occurred in the engine that led to a woman nearly being sucked out! People pulled her in, but from what I understand, she later died due to her injuries! The flight safely returned to Philadelphia!
@@arthurgearheard4701 I saw on a documentary hosted by Gillian Anderson about aircraft safety a united DC10 had a section blow out and a passenger got sucked out and into the engine.Terrible.
My friends and I used to play “Airport” back in the day, with a couple of scale model plastic airliners, Dinky toys, and a Super City set for the airport terminal and hangars. Patroni always saved the day! 😅
I did the same thing with any toy/model airplane I could get ahold of. When I was a little boy raised in N.W. Florida one winter it snowed! I hauled my Fischer price metro airport and parking garage playsets outside, along with the F.P. little jumbo jet and assorted other toy planes, and played out the whole scenario! I had the whole thing memorized, all my favorite lines from George Kennedy and Dean Martin.
GK just talks like real mechanic. He is not acting in this scene!!! LOL :) Im a firefighter. In my job and every job theres a "Joe Patroni" always among us! And thats a good thing! :)
Having seen the Airplane! films first, seeing this now is gold. We can see how the parody characters grew from these performances, George is the Sarge all the way!
I remember listening to Kennedy on KLOS explaining how and why John F. Kennedy Jr. went down in the ocean back in '99 with his wife and sister-in-law. George was an experienced pilot and had made that flight dozens of times. Basically, they died because the sister-in-law was late, hours late. John was not (IR) instrument rated and he flew the plane right into the water because he couldn't see the coastline and thought they were level. (BTW George, thanks for the autograph.)
That’s my favorite scene along with him chewing out the know-it-all pilot who won’t use full power to drive the plane out of the snow drift Pilot-“...you tell him I’ve got 3 million miles in the air” Petroni-“...yep, and 2 1/2 feet in the ground...”
Classic George Kennedy! Unfortunately, in real life what he is describing did not happen. In 1962, Continental flight 11, from Chicago O’Hare to Kansas City experienced exactly what was described in the movie, with one major difference. The bomber, who had purchased a life insurance policy for his wife and child, detonated a bomb made up of several sticks of dynamite, in the starboard side rear restroom. When the bomb exploded, it blew the entire tail section off of the main fuselage. Even though the flight crew did everything they could to keep the Boeing 707 flying, but with the loss of controls when the tail separated, doomed the plane. All passengers and crew died. There is a memorial to Flight 11 in Unionville, Mo.
He couldnt have been cast better as Patroni. Dean Martin not so much as anything lol. Burt as Bakersfeild yea. But the hokey special effects? Well its a movie.
Too mean. You can't bust chops for effects in a movie released in 1970 when they were still shooting with models. In fact, the explosion decompression scene was impressively accurate without any CGI help.

My Favorite Scene in the entire Airport film series
It was the, "Nice goin' sweetheart," that was my favorite.

RIP George Kennedy, you are missed.
George Kennedy was the perfect actor to play the Airport movies.
They don't call 'em movies anymore ... they call 'em Kennedies!
When GK says, "....thats what I love about the 707, the only thing she can't do is read!", love how he lets the cigar dip up and down in his mouth. Looks so cool! Almost made me wanna take up cigar smoking.
I always loved this movie and patroni was always a favorite of mine
i loved George as Patroni in these Airport films......so convincing about the technical side too.
GK was born to play that role!!! Sadly, Airport 79 was not his best. But he ruled aviation in the previous three films!!!
@@RTD8481 at least they made him a pilot in that last one. And he made love to a beautiful woman in it, but don't tell Susan Clark !!!!!!

George should have won an academy award for his performance
He was a Good actor going toe to toe with some of the Best, and Holding his own !

These movies had a lot of consulting. They would not risk to play the fools for the audience.

George is awesome with his "patroni's"

the best and only believable Airport movie.
He played himself in a Wings episodes where Brian Hackett kept asking what would Joe Petroni do in certain situations. Too funny
would love to see that!!!
I like how in the franchise Patroni progressed from ground crew to the Concorde pilot.
Yeah That’s Really Believable! 🥴🤔

Patroni was the man I love all these airport movies
Patroni was my fantasy daddy. I always wanted to meet Mr. Kennedy but I never got to. I loved Him so much.
In the book, Patroni likes the local rock and roll stations while driving to work
I like how the open part of the model plane is conveniently facing us.
Yeah, it would be so much more entertaining and cinematic if it were turned away from us.
Good point....
Don't forget the actors are awkwardly sitting on either ends of the table so we can see and zoom in later... very considerate.
In the film, the bomb went off on the port side...
Watching patroni made me become a mechanic for aa I watched all these movies as a kid
And he finally made it to become a Concorde pilot in 1979.
Patroni and the wifey were definitely gettin the groove on 🔥🔥🔥
George Kennedy played a Man. Reminds me of my Uncles and father.
Yup. They don’t make us like they used to anymore!
I pretended I was Petroni as a 12 yr old 'taxi only' pilot under the basement stairs, working the throttles and yoke
George Kennedy was a powerhouse.
It's a shame that he was never nominated for this role
He was the best part of this movie.
Super mouvie👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼🙏💖💋💋💋✌✌✌
Oh Luke! They built a model plane for you, Luke. It’s all nice and shiney.

He won the oscar for "cool hand luke" (as he should have) he also should have won it for this. Epic!
Joe Patroni - patron saint of aircraft mechanics
Olá Billy ..coloca o filme inteiro ok

Patroni - 'I'm taking over this aircraft cause I'm the guy in-charge.'
Patroni knows his shit.
Patroni coined the phrase
“If it ain’t a Boeing, I ain’t going”
I don’t think we would be saying it now.
Great movie, but no Jive Lady. ☹☹
"So the kook was sitting here" lol
Cold hard facts from Joe ! Classic !
Wasn't he in The Naked Gun?
I liked George in Dirty Dozen
Movie inspired him to become a pilot flying personal aircrafts.
Joe Patrons was someone you trust with your life.
Sadly America is losing real men like Patroni.
I'm looking for the scene where cigar chomping GK takes the controls of the plane, while still in the snow! Can't find it....UGH!!!!
MrPaladin123 It's in the scene Mechanic and pilot argue.
'Sir...she can't take any more!!!??.........*Patroni: 'Well anyway...She's gonna Get It!.

A Matts plane is material and logistics. Supplies, typewriters, pencils, you name it.
Military Air Transport Service, now USAF Air Mobility Command.
What I would give for that giant cutaway 707 model!

I am assuming that several sticks of dynamite could blow a hole in the side if a mountain. What chance would an airplane have,
Glad it's not a Max
"Yeah, I'm sure. One time I was in an Alaska Airlines Boeing 737..."
Joe Patroni, a real hero
Don,t airport the Sunday night movie next on abc
Blow ROC??
Gotta love Joe Patroni!
Nobody bragging about Boeing anymore.
Actually you get blown out because the higher pressure is pushing you out of the hole
