Can we talk about how a non-bender teenage girl took down a flock of fire nation guards who are supposed to be protecting a high-security prison, without excluding the fact that some of them are benders?
The Boiling Rock was one hell of a two-parted episode. I could never get over the fact that Sokka and Zuko *successfully* infiltrated the Fire Nation's most advanced prison. It's mindboggling.
I love how the line "I love Zuko more than I fear you" is what broke her. Her whole life, Zuko was the one who got the love from their mother while all she had was the fear people had of her. Now her only "friends" chose Zuko over her. It must've hit very deep, hence why she lost her mind after this. She dedicated her entire life to being dominant and feared, and lost everything, while Zuko changed and went for love instead, and gained everything for it.
@@AC-nx7qr it was probably empty love. His type rarely love their children and see them as objects, not the same as the real love zuko got from their mom but azula never got.

She was also ready to kill for zuko to. That glint when she saw her knife likely meant that unlike every other time she threw a knife she was prepared to throw that with lethal intent.
Kielian I get what you mean but if Ty lee wasn’t there, Azula would’ve killed Mai 100%. Azula is a fighter and a bender while Mai isn’t. She just hurls knives. Not saying she’s weak but Azula is by far the most dangerous villain in avatar.
@@user-ie4uk3ub6c First of all, Azula is not the *most* dangerous villain in avatar. For example, Ozai is a bigger threat than Azula will ever be, that blood bending hag as well. If you think about it, no one can really stop that blood bending hag except for Katara. Second, while Azula is a bender and martial artist, that does not necessarily mean she'll win guaranteed against Mai. You're low-balling Mai here a bit. Mai is extremely agile which was shown in this video, not to mention she has pin-point accuracy with her throwing knives or shurikens. Azula on the other hand is *not* on par with Mai's agility but she makes up for it with firebending and lightning. Point is that it could go either way. Mai just has to land 1 or maybe 2 of her shurikens at Azula's throat, if that doesn't kill her then Mai can close the gap and finish Azula while she struggles to stop the bleeding.
Zane The Insane I get what u mean but overall azula is in fact the most dangerous villain. While Ozai is the fire lord, he was only seen interacting with Aang while azula had a confrontation with almost everyone. No one is even saying Mai is weak, but azula can literally just shoot fire/lightning at her in an instant. Mai would either have to hit her first which requires a bunch of speed OR she dodges lightning which is nearly impossible.
Zane The Insane Hama/the hag was dangerous but she only targeted citizens who lived near her. She wasn’t a big part of the whole story since she only came in one episode. And she can only Blood bend during the full moon. Without it, shes still a strong water bender but she wasn’t exactly a full on “villain”
Ty Lee was enjoying herself to be in the circus and then Azula decided to ask her to show her performance. Azula even asking the circus owner to light up the fire in the rings and released every animals in circus just to see Ty Lee suffers! As the result, Ty Lee changed her mind and join Azula to capture Zuko and Iroh in Book 2. Mai in the other hand, is always bored everytime and the only thing that excites her is Zuko since she was her boyfriend at that time.
I count it three: 1. She was very confident that Zuko and the others will die in the untie cable car but nope! Mai saved them. 2. She didn't expect Mai will betray her and stand up to her that Mai loves Zuko more she fears her. 3. Ty Lee chi-blocking her and make her paralyzed for awhile. And after that, she's completely lose her mind. Even when she's attacking Team Avatar + Zuko in Air Temple, her move is not as precise like before when fighting Zuko one vs one. And then, her father left her behind and she becomes paranoid.
She still loved her brother even if they had a sick sense of what love was (or the lack of) but he went against the family to her, then her two most loyal friends turned against her. She was alone and confused, then her father made her Firelord and he became Phoenix king in her broken state she thought he betrayed her as well and that was the final straw to this young teens psyche. People forget she is only 14.
@@DamionTyrouge I don't think Azula cares to much to Zuko because she was taunting Zuko to getting killed by their dad by saying: "Dad's gonna kill you. Lalalala!" She has been brainwashed by Ozai for so long to be a perfectionist prodigy so both of Ozai and Azula see Zuko is too weak compared to them. Also, she's always mocking Iroh because I bet Ozai tells her many times: "Don't be like your uncle! He is a failure!" So in her mind is basically: "Uncle Iroh is a failure! My daddy is awesome!!" While in fact, Ozai is a lazy old man who never gone to war or join military for his entire life. She's been oblivious by Ozai's tyranny, she doesn't care what love and care meant.
tbh i feel like it started a lot longer than that. I mean ironically, the only people who ever truly loved/cared for azula were ursa (azula's mother who azula thought hated her) and zuko; yet she was plagued to hate anyone who didn't show strength or complete love for the fire nation. she was manipulated by ozai since she was born for being a 'prodigy' and he exploited her talents. I feel like throughout the show, azula was in a constant mental breakdown, incessantly being plagued by sadistic and depressed thoughts but trying to hide it behind that megalomaniac personality.
And when she was attacking Air Temple to fight Team Avatar and Zuko, in one on one battle with Zuko, her move is not as precise as before. She's usually always using two of her fingertips but at that time, she used fists. Also, Zuko's power has upgraded after he learnt it from the dragons with Aang and she must be not expected how he's finally catch up with her even he can deflect her fires very well. And of course, her turnpoint goes to when Ozai left her behind to make her The Fire Lord while he becomes Phoenix King as the ruler of the world as the punishment for lying to him of Zuko killing The Avatar.
I SCREAMED when Ty Lee did that... you can clearly see she was scared and confused on who’s side to pick, and the fact she chose Mais is.. literally 🥺🥺
Well, Ty Lee is in the position either she will watch one of her friends died by lightning or by a knife in the heart or neck. So, logically, she needs to stop the one with the lightning of course.
She can hold her own against opponents with bending. That fight would have been interesting. Plus the betrayal would have thrown Azula off a bit in a 1 v 1 fight I would have loved to see that fight
@@lol-ye9jx well for Azula, it takes her time to charge up her lightening. For characters like ozai and iroh (mainly ozai) it takes them no time. But if you watch, every lightening scene with her needed time to be created because she hadn’t mastered it like her father.
Within the top 100 of all time maybe, there is still live action shows, and anime which is a tough tier to crack. It is definitely top three best western animated shows
2:30 Azula's *audible* reaction to getting knocked down--that moment of genuine shock--is what makes this scene for me. Up until this point, she's pretty much always been on top of things, talking down to people, and having the skills to back it up. And then here, for a few seconds, she's actually powerless and out of control of a situation for once.
That gasp was perfect. I thought it was only something you could make in the moment; genuine shock mixed with being moved against your will, but the fact that the VA recreated it in a studio? 10/10,I love the VA's in this show
Too be fair, Azula liked to bully both of them by using fear and privilege as The Princess of Fire Nation since they were kids and they both had enough with her at that moment.

She is too innocent and naive and she didn't realize that Azula tortured her in her circus by using fire flames and released every animals in circus just to humiliate her! Even Toph is not so naive despite being the youngest team Member and 2 years younger than her (Ty Lee) and of course since she's a living lying detector. At least Aang and Katara can be suspicious sometimes while Sokka always being the first person who noticed everything.
margareth michelina I think Ty Lee definitely realized that Azula was exerting her power and privilege over her during the circus performance. She realized that it would only get worse for everyone involved if she didn’t leave with Azula, so she played dumb just as Azula expects and went along with it. Ty Lee is a ditz, but she isn’t stupid. She understands that being cutesy and sweet gets her attention, which she sorely lacked throughout her childhood, but she also knows that it makes people think they know all there is to her when they don’t. I think she’s a strategic, “calculating” type of person in her own way.

"I love Zuko more than I fear you." i think this is the sentence that really broke Azula, and i just realized that the reason is almost certainly because that was exactly, word for word, how Azula thought her mother viewed her.
I feel like throughout the whole series mei was never forced into being part of azula’s group, she was just doing it for some adventure in her life, so that’s why when mei said Azula can’t use fear to control her that encouraged ty lee to stand up for herself and mei. I remember in the when they were trying to break into ba sing sei with the drill and mei said and I quote “azula can shoot all the lightning she wants at me I’m not going in there” when ty lee told her to go into the sewage to follow sokka and katara. Mei inspired ty lee.
Oh yeah good point. Mei listens to azula most of the time but when she really doesn't feel like it she won't do it. Even with the bear she just let it go without fighting them.
Ty Lee and Mei's friendship was more of a real friendship than they shared with Azula. Azula used fear and her power as princess to make them follow her and therefor the friendship to her wasnt as real. I feel it had the potential to be, if Azula had been able to show real feelings and didnt manipulate them. Also in the beginning Mei simply knew there was no saying no to Azula because shes known her a long time, and probably told herself at least it might help ease her perpetual boredom to follow her. Ty Lee who was happy living civilian life tried saying no until she realized Azula would find a way, one way or another, to make her say yes. Mei, even as a kid, always cared for Zuko though she was Azulas playmate because of his more open loving nature, much like other people in his life like his mother and uncle. Azula as a kid and an adult simply didnt understand this emotion so thats why mei said "guess you dont know people as well as you think you do, I love Zuko more than i fear you" And notice how anytime she didnt follow Azulas orders exactly, Azula wasnt actually there. This was the only time she openly defied her and it took the love of her life being in danger.
It's ironic that Azula can easily manipulated most of the benders like Zuko, Iroh, Aang and Toph but lose to her two best friends who are non-benders in mentally and physically (Mai from her comebacks and Ty Lee from her chi-blocking) Except for Katara since she is immune to her charm and has survival instincts to defeat Azula.
@@dantearias2182 Also, Azula's mind at that time was to kill Mai with lightning as you can see on her pose with 2 fingerprints but she was kinda too rushed and forgot Ty Lee was there.
They were all childhood friends and in the end Azula was prepared to hurt and probably kill Mai. Ty Lee couldn’t just stand and watch that. And even if it terrified her, trying to do something would’ve been better than doing nothing at all and watching Mai die. They probably did have an ounce of care for Azula but they saw how corrupt she was and in this moment they did what they could to stop it because it was indeed wrong. This scene was so good
If Azula was gonna use lightning in that instant couldn't Mai have won? Since Azula has to charge up the lightning, Mai can just toss a knife right at her throat before she can release the lightning

This will always be one of my favorite scenes in the show, simply for Ty Lee. Her face after she attacks Azula, she looks as if she's even surprised she did it, as if she did it on instinct.
Azula: *Manipulated Zuko to betray Iroh so he could go home to Fire Nation and gets his honor but Zuko feels empty afterwards* Azula later: *Getting betrayed by her two best friends* Karma!
Heh, something particularly satisfying about this moment is that Azula was blindsided so completely that all her wit deserted her. Her "comeback" to Mai was literally a "no u".
I actually loved Azula's comeback line just as much as Mai's retort. Granted, Azula is my favourite character, but still. I imagine following up "No, YOU miscalculated, you should have feared me more!" with execution by lightning would have instilled fear in anyone.
@@6Grimmjow yup, exactly. Part of why Azula gets to talk so threateningly is because she ALWAYS back up her talk with power and skill. That comeback line would have been more badass if she didn't get dropped 2 seconds after saying it.
I read on another video a possible interesting fact. Mai's voice actress is the same as Zuko's Mom. So when Azula heard Mai telling Azula that she loves Zuko more than she fears her. Deep down in Azula subconscious, that is what Azula believed her mother truly felt about her. So hearing those words, from the same voice, is what really broke Azula.
The look on Mai’s face said it all. She thought her whole life that Tai Lee feared Azula too much to do anything. And as for Azula? She thought that Mai and Tai Lee were her friends, that they actually liked and respected her more than feared. Henceforth that scene began her downward spiral to Insanity. Not to mention all the stress her father puts her under, the revelation that her father didn’t love her and what she believed to be her mother hating her and believing her to be a monster finally drove her over the edge. And she’s only 14.

I always found it interesting that Ty Lee chose to defend Mai over Azula, she didn't have any real motive to betray Azula like Mai did, I sometimes feel like she wanted to defuse the situation and the only way she felt she could was to attack Azula
She was in the situation whether she will watch one of her best friends died by lightning strike or get stabbed by the knives. So, she decided to stop the lightning. Also, when she and Azula left Zuko and the others going to die in the broken gondola, she was looking symphatetic and worry while Azula was smirking because she will watch her crush, Sokka will die.
also, hear it shows that love always wins over fear. Tylee never only joined Azula out of fear. But she didn't fear Azula enough to not never betray her and save Mai!!
There's a very good detail in here. Azula was still calm and collected after seeing Mai's betrayal. Yes, she was angry and surprised but still able to keep it together. Yet when Mai said that she loved Zuko more than she feared Azula, you literally see how her expression changes immediately. She completely loses it, ready to attack and kill her childhood friend in coldblood if Ty Lee didn't stop her. This says a very important thing about Azula: her ideology. She internalized the "Fear is superior to love" mentality since young ages. So when Mai, her trusted ally, betrayed Azula and said her love for Zuko was greater than her fear for Azula, it breaks her. Not because she cared about Mai and Ty Lee so much, but because her ideology collapsed. No wonder why she started to lose her. Her whole worldview started to collapse. And when Ozai said that he wasn't taking her with him, that was another hit for her fragile mental health. She believed that her father would give her anything she wanted as long as she was useful. But that notion also got shattered here. She loses her control and yells at her father. She says she never raised her voice at him before, so you can say how much she was uncontrolled there. So it's not surprising that she started to hallucinate Ursa. And not a coincidence that her mother was keep saying "I love you Azula, not fear you". She got really obsessed with that love vs fear notion, and it messed up her entire worldview and everything that she relied on. Of course she would become paranoid at the end. She was no longer sure what she could depend on.
Azula cared about them. The fact that she was hurt that they betrayed her shows that there were some emotional attachment from her part. The problem is that she was raised by Ozai, who was all about "making everyone fear you to make them respect you". This may work on Ozai since he didn't care about anyone else, as he would simply get rid of tools that lost their usefulness, but Azula broke because she actually saw them as friends.
@@lisboah I doubt it. I'd say Azula was only "hurt" because it was a big damage for her self-esteem. She is smart but she did not see it coming. And as I explained, it's also because her ideology collapsed
Machiavelli teaches us that relying solely on fear is not an effective tactic because fear is not infallible. Eventually people get tired of being afraid and fight back against it and fear is especially vulnerable to two emotions: hatred and love. People can be motivated by hatred to act against fear if they hate what causes that fear or to act out of love in a way that completely outstrips their fear. Azula never did grasp that fact.
Can we talk about how *locked in* Ty Lee was when she chi blocked Azula, you can tell shes concerned and confused when the showdown starts but when it starts to get real a switch flips.
If Ty Lee didn’t interfere Mai would have thrown her Stilletto straight across Azula’s neck suffocating her while the lightning bolt killed Mai. It wouldn’t have been PG-13 at all.
Mai and Ty Lee literally fought a bunch of benders, like dai lee agents, defeat kyoshi warriors and fought team avatar several times and they almost win everytime. They can literally beat those guards on their own. Or atleast knock many of them until Azula's chi is back to normal...
I thought about this and what you said is 100% correct. Mai and Ty Lee could have annihilated the guards, but they wouldn’t have been able to escape. The gondolas seem to be the only way in/out of Boiling Rock and we saw that they take time to get across. Azula and Ty Lee just took one of them back towards Mai. If Mai and Ty Lee tried to use it to escape, they’d be dead because Azula’s bending would have come back and she would’ve cut the line. Same with the guards. Anyone would cut the line and no one would try to save them when the Princess is after their necks. That’s probably why Mai and Ty Lee didn’t put up a fight. They knew it was pointless
It would have been difficult because they were surrounded. They'd have to avoid getting hit from all directions, defeat all of them, and escape. All before Azula recovers. They could take her hostage but they're not the kind of people who would do that to a former friend.
@@MCSPARTAN501 I've thought about his situation a lot and figured that Azula is likely the most powerful bender in the entire show that we encounter. If she was prepared (and calm) she would absolutely decimate Ty Lee and Mai.
Mai's cold, rock solid determination as she actively and decidedly made her choice and at the same time accepted all the consequences including a fight against just about the most powerful character in the show, including Aang at this point without the avatar state, juxtaposed with Ty Lee completely losing her cheerful aloof facade and being clearly completely overstrained by the situation and openly overcome by fear and looking completely 100% unsure of her panicked reaction even after she already did it is so wonderful. I think Azula miscalculated in two completely opposite ways. Mei turned on her because she overcame her fear of Azula, but Ty Lee didn't. She acted out of fear, meaning she didn't turn on Azula in spite of being scared, but *_because_* she was scared. Scared of Azula hurting her friend. So the very moment Azula shouts that Mei should have feared her more, she loses Ty Lee because she fears her too much. After all, if you're scared of a wolf because it might hurt you or others when you're in the woods, you'll just avoid the woods and not let your children outside at night. But if a specific wolf pack is known as maneaters and are known to hunt people, and you think that they might come to your village and kill your children, you'll be even more scared of those wolves, but you won't therefore avoid the woods even more, you gather a bunch of men, take your guns into the wood, find the maneating pack and shoot the wolves. A peasant may not act up against a tyrant because he's scared of what the tyrant may do, but if your family is starving even the scared farmers will take up arms and revolt. A ruler that is scared of a young relative with a claim to the throne won't avoid that rival out of fear, but will have him killed. Fear can be a deterrent from acting against you, but it can also be a motivator driving the same action.
See, people keep calling Azula this emotionless weapon, and while that is right, Azula does have some emotions. We see in The Beach how she does care for her fiends (remember how Azula felt bad about calling Tai Lee a tease?) If she really didn’t care, she wouldn’t have apologized. At the end of the day I think she did see them as friends, but she also saw them as assets as well
She had to see them as assets in order to serve her purpose as a mere extension of Ozai's will. Though she wanted to view them as friends, especially at the beach where she had gotten to live as a normal teenage girl for the first and only time.
She has been brainwashed by Ozai for her 14 years of her life to be a perfectionst prodigy killing machine who doesn't use emotion. Ozai told her that Fear makes her stronger so in order to make people respects her, she has to use fear. She thinks she is daddy's special little girl but his love is 0 since he never giving her love. And 0x100 = 0. Ozai never cares to both of his children nor his own Nation, he only cares on himself.
I agree but her power dynamics with her friends was toxic. She used fear to get what she wanted and that's how Ty Lee followed her. I guess she assumed the same of Mai, but when push came to shove, she realized that her rule through fear was not sustainable, that and she really did miscalculate with Mai. People can rise against fear when they've had enough or inspired by others to fight it. Love, it just flows naturally. In a way, Azula deluded herself. You cannot achieve love, friendship, etc, through fear. She learned this the hard way and her psyche snapped.
Azula was taught an ideology that completely contradicts human nature. She was taught that any kind of love is a weakness and that the only thing that will make people loyal is fear. You can see throughout the show that she really tries her very best to make Ty Lee and Mai fear her while also treating them like friends. She has no problem hugging them, she praises them for their good work, she gives them their own throne right next to her in the drill (seriously, I think I've never ever seen a villain give their servants their own throne), she goes on vacation with them. All of these things are things you don't do with people you don't consider friends
Let's not forget how The Warden got humiliated in one day. 1. He was making the statement that no one ever escaped The Boiling Rock until he got outsmarted by Sokka and the others 2. He didn't expect he will be the hostage 3. He said himself that he'd rather going to Boiling Water than getting his record broken. That's why he was asking to cut the line. But, his niece released them. 4. Once he come back by The Gondola, he will find out his niece is his new prisoner. How humiliated is that for having your family member is your prisoner?
It wouldn’t have sent Azula over the edge. If it wasn’t for her best friends betraying her, she would have been stable enough to fight Zuko. This is when azula started to slip. . . Right here. Her gasp when Ty Lee chi blocked her (idk how to spell it), that gasp really made me feel sorry for her. She had been defeated by one of her closest friends.

@@DomCOuano realizing nobody cared at all and now you get what you wanted in a twisted way.....becoming firelord in her head was probably a grand moment, but in reality, she was alone, with no one to look to. so sad.....she really lost it in that mirror scene
this scene is very important for young girls to watch. it shows that you can stand up against your bully and it's righteous to do so. girl bullies are usually mentally abusive, (as zuko once said, girls are crazy) a lot of the victims can't do anything cause they don't understand what's going on especially soft, cheerful girl like ty lee. I'm so proud of ty lee for deciding to stop azula and help mai
Azula: "Leave us alone. I never expected this from you. The thing I don't understand is why, why would you do it? You know the consequences." Mai: "I just you just don't know people as well as you think you do. You miscalculated, I love Zuko more than I fear you." ... I love this line, because everything Azula said afterward was hollow and corny incomparison. The fact that was likely going to kill Mai, speaks volumes about her character and inability to understand love, empathy, connection and everything good.
I gotta say, Mai and Ty Lee make a great best friend dynamic. Like u can see with Ty Lee's quick reaction to protect her friends that she deeply cared more of her friendship than Azula's destructive ways. Like u can tell Ty Lee really cares about Mai Witnessing this scene was shocking but very wholesome and no less
She said it was primarily for Zuko, but I'd imagine Mai wasn't too thrilled about Azula's willingness to kill her uncle, either. As gruff as he was, the Warden seemed to genuinely love his niece.
Azula's gasp at 2:30 feels so real. There's so much more happening than shock in this moment & Grey DeLisle is able to capture it without a word. It drives home to me how betrayed Azula feels and I can't help but empathize with her right then.
"Saving the jerk who dumped me" The way Mai looked back at Zuko! The way Zuko looked shocked to see it was Mai saving them! "You miscalculated. I love Zuko, more than I fear you." Great moment for them ❤️ And Ty Lee chose her love for Mai over Azula and the Fire Nation as well and used her skills for good for the first time! Great episode.
Read a thing talking about Ty Lee messing up Azula, and how both her and Mai were shocked she’d do that. Mai was probably never really sure where she stood with Ty Lee, but with past experience, she naturally assumed that she was 2nd best to Azula, that Ty Lee would always pick Azula first. That’s why she’s so damn shocked when Ty Lee tries to save her, showing her true loyalty. Ty Lee’s got a personality where you don’t expect her to be holding any +4 cards in Uno, because she’ll outright tell you what she has otherwise. It’s also pretty wholesome when you think about how Mai’s never been first pick, or she’s been put to the side. The beach episode explains it best, where she’s treated well, so long as she doesn’t act out of line. So when she finally acts in her own interests, how could she (or Azula for that matter) have expected Ty Lee to stand with her?
This scene has got to be one of the best in the entire show. I mean that. The fact that we’ve been building up to this since the third episode of book 2 when Azula first assembled her team only for everything to completely unravel all at once in less than three minutes. Fucking incredible
This here is the key difference between Zuko and Azula. Azula commands respect by threatening and striking fear into people. But she has never once earned people's loyalty. With Zuko, no one has ever obeyed him out of fear. But the people who are loyal to him are loyal to him out of respect and love. With Azula, people can overcome their fear of her. But the people who love Zuko will always be by his side
This is even shown with their naval crews. When we first see Azula, she forces her way with fear and manipulation with the captain. He only follows orders out of fear for what comes next. Whereas with Zuko's crew, they start to respect his command even though he's been nothing but a moody teenager to them because he bravely sacrifices his well-being to save one of the crew members, and then deems getting them to safety was more important than getting the Avatar, his only motivation in life at the time (the crew learning his backstory doesn't hurt). Zuko, when even at his most villainous in the show, showed why he was a good person all along. Beautiful storytelling
Azula has credentials as a conqueror but never as a leader, especially a leader for her nation. Her flaws already shows that she doesn't have what it takes to be a leader. Zuko, on the other hands, does.
@@danielhandika8767 Zutara vibes happened back in the first season, even the first episode if im not mistaken. But it is based on nothing but the fire/water, good/bad kinda thing. I personally thought of it when Zuko found Katara's necklace and said something edgy xd

@G When exactly would that have happened? Mai is being set up as being a love interest to Zuko in her very first appearance, and before that, there’s no scene where Katara has any interaction with Zuko that isn’t outright hostile.
I like how Azula knows it was Ty Lee who betrayed her at that instant even though she didn’t look her in the eye. She knows that it’s Ty Lee and is horrified by it and you can tell by her gasp when she falls down

I really don't understand where so much love for Mai and Ty Lee in the community comes from, I have never liked them (To be fair, I have a specific taste when it comes to ATLA characters). Their whole "redemption" is just dumb. They got let off the hook way too easily by doing nothing except jumping off of a sinking ship that they willingly helped steer for months. War criminals who were never prosecuted because of their political connections. The whole "we were actually the good guys all along, we were just forced to follow orders, so we don't have to answer for anything" thing is a joke. Things don't work that way.
Mai's love for Zuko was definitely more powerful than her fear for Azula. The boiling rock surprised me so much. I never expected that betrayal from Mai and Ty Lee.
Mei loved Zuko more than she feared Azula…. and Ty Lee loved Mei more than she feared Azula. Powerful connection to the overall theme of Love conquering all.

This was her turning point. After this, she was paranoid and felt she could no longer trust anyone in the Fire Nation, which is why when she became Firelord she fired her entire staff and spiralled further into paranoia and fear
Azula did think Mai and Ty Lee were subordinates, but a bigger part of her really thought of them as friends. That’s why she wanted a moment alone, that’s why she says “I never expected this from you”. It probably hurt even worse when Mai said she feared Azula, because now she thinks fear is the only thing people see in her. Makes her feel like no one can truly love her

I love how the line "I love Zuko more than I fear you" is what broke her. Her whole life, Zuko was the one who got the love from their mother while all she had was the fear people had of her. Now her only "friends" chose Zuko over her. It must've hit very deep, hence why she lost her mind after this. She dedicated her entire life to being dominant and feared, and lost everything, while Zuko changed and went for love instead, and gained everything for it.

First of all, Azula is not the *most* dangerous villain in avatar. For example, Ozai is a bigger threat than Azula will ever be, that blood bending hag as well. If you think about it, no one can really stop that blood bending hag except for Katara.
Second, while Azula is a bender and martial artist, that does not necessarily mean she'll win guaranteed against Mai.
You're low-balling Mai here a bit. Mai is extremely agile which was shown in this video, not to mention she has pin-point accuracy with her throwing knives or shurikens. Azula on the other hand is *not* on par with Mai's agility but she makes up for it with firebending and lightning.
Point is that it could go either way. Mai just has to land 1 or maybe 2 of her shurikens at Azula's throat, if that doesn't kill her then Mai can close the gap and finish Azula while she struggles to stop the bleeding.
Zane The Insane I get what u mean but overall azula is in fact the most dangerous villain. While Ozai is the fire lord, he was only seen interacting with Aang while azula had a confrontation with almost everyone. No one is even saying Mai is weak, but azula can literally just shoot fire/lightning at her in an instant. Mai would either have to hit her first which requires a bunch of speed OR she dodges lightning which is nearly impossible.
Zane The Insane Hama/the hag was dangerous but she only targeted citizens who lived near her. She wasn’t a big part of the whole story since she only came in one episode. And she can only Blood bend during the full moon. Without it, shes still a strong water bender but she wasn’t exactly a full on “villain”
Tbh, if you look at her debut episode, you could tell that Ty Lee kind of didn't want to join Azula in the first place.

Azula even asking the circus owner to light up the fire in the rings and released every animals in circus just to see Ty Lee suffers! As the result, Ty Lee changed her mind and join Azula to capture Zuko and Iroh in Book 2. Mai in the other hand, is always bored everytime and the only thing that excites her is Zuko since she was her boyfriend at that time.

And after that, she's completely lose her mind. Even when she's attacking Team Avatar + Zuko in Air Temple, her move is not as precise like before when fighting Zuko one vs one. And then, her father left her behind and she becomes paranoid.

This is when and where Azula's mental breakdown started
She still loved her brother even if they had a sick sense of what love was (or the lack of) but he went against the family to her, then her two most loyal friends turned against her. She was alone and confused, then her father made her Firelord and he became Phoenix king in her broken state she thought he betrayed her as well and that was the final straw to this young teens psyche. People forget she is only 14.

tbh i feel like it started a lot longer than that. I mean ironically, the only people who ever truly loved/cared for azula were ursa (azula's mother who azula thought hated her) and zuko; yet she was plagued to hate anyone who didn't show strength or complete love for the fire nation. she was manipulated by ozai since she was born for being a 'prodigy' and he exploited her talents. I feel like throughout the show, azula was in a constant mental breakdown, incessantly being plagued by sadistic and depressed thoughts but trying to hide it behind that megalomaniac personality.

Also, Zuko's power has upgraded after he learnt it from the dragons with Aang and she must be not expected how he's finally catch up with her even he can deflect her fires very well. And of course, her turnpoint goes to when Ozai left her behind to make her The Fire Lord while he becomes Phoenix King as the ruler of the world as the punishment for lying to him of Zuko killing The Avatar.
I SCREAMED when Ty Lee did that... you can clearly see she was scared and confused on who’s side to pick, and the fact she chose Mais is.. literally 🥺🥺

She realized that it would only get worse for everyone involved if she didn’t leave with Azula, so she played dumb just as Azula expects and went along with it. Ty Lee is a ditz, but she isn’t stupid. She understands that being cutesy and sweet gets her attention, which she sorely lacked throughout her childhood, but she also knows that it makes people think they know all there is to her when they don’t. I think she’s a strategic, “calculating” type of person in her own way.
What’s really sad is that Mai said “I love Zuko more than I FEAR you” and not LOVE which means that Mai probably never cared about Azula :(

I feel like throughout the whole series mei was never forced into being part of azula’s group, she was just doing it for some adventure in her life, so that’s why when mei said Azula can’t use fear to control her that encouraged ty lee to stand up for herself and mei. I remember in the when they were trying to break into ba sing sei with the drill and mei said and I quote “azula can shoot all the lightning she wants at me I’m not going in there” when ty lee told her to go into the sewage to follow sokka and katara. Mei inspired ty lee.
Oh yeah good point. Mei listens to azula most of the time but when she really doesn't feel like it she won't do it. Even with the bear she just let it go without fighting them.

Ty Lee and Mei's friendship was more of a real friendship than they shared with Azula. Azula used fear and her power as princess to make them follow her and therefor the friendship to her wasnt as real. I feel it had the potential to be, if Azula had been able to show real feelings and didnt manipulate them. Also in the beginning Mei simply knew there was no saying no to Azula because shes known her a long time, and probably told herself at least it might help ease her perpetual boredom to follow her. Ty Lee who was happy living civilian life tried saying no until she realized Azula would find a way, one way or another, to make her say yes. Mei, even as a kid, always cared for Zuko though she was Azulas playmate because of his more open loving nature, much like other people in his life like his mother and uncle. Azula as a kid and an adult simply didnt understand this emotion so thats why mei said "guess you dont know people as well as you think you do, I love Zuko more than i fear you" And notice how anytime she didnt follow Azulas orders exactly, Azula wasnt actually there. This was the only time she openly defied her and it took the love of her life being in danger.

They were all childhood friends and in the end Azula was prepared to hurt and probably kill Mai. Ty Lee couldn’t just stand and watch that. And even if it terrified her, trying to do something would’ve been better than doing nothing at all and watching Mai die.
They probably did have an ounce of care for Azula but they saw how corrupt she was and in this moment they did what they could to stop it because it was indeed wrong.

I actually loved Azula's comeback line just as much as Mai's retort. Granted, Azula is my favourite character, but still. I imagine following up "No, YOU miscalculated, you should have feared me more!" with execution by lightning would have instilled fear in anyone.

I read on another video a possible interesting fact.
Mai's voice actress is the same as Zuko's Mom. So when Azula heard Mai telling Azula that she loves Zuko more than she fears her. Deep down in Azula subconscious, that is what Azula believed her mother truly felt about her.
So hearing those words, from the same voice, is what really broke Azula.

You can literally hear Azula’s mental stability shatter with that gasp as she falls to the ground.
The look on Mai’s face said it all. She thought her whole life that Tai Lee feared Azula too much to do anything. And as for Azula? She thought that Mai and Tai Lee were her friends, that they actually liked and respected her more than feared. Henceforth that scene began her downward spiral to Insanity. Not to mention all the stress her father puts her under, the revelation that her father didn’t love her and what she believed to be her mother hating her and believing her to be a monster finally drove her over the edge. And she’s only 14.
Yeah that's what makes this scene so awesome for Mai. She probably knew she would die if she faced off with Azula and still was ready to go.

I always found it interesting that Ty Lee chose to defend Mai over Azula, she didn't have any real motive to betray Azula like Mai did, I sometimes feel like she wanted to defuse the situation and the only way she felt she could was to attack Azula
She was in the situation whether she will watch one of her best friends died by lightning strike or get stabbed by the knives. So, she decided to stop the lightning. Also, when she and Azula left Zuko and the others going to die in the broken gondola, she was looking symphatetic and worry while Azula was smirking because she will watch her crush, Sokka will die.

There's a very good detail in here. Azula was still calm and collected after seeing Mai's betrayal. Yes, she was angry and surprised but still able to keep it together. Yet when Mai said that she loved Zuko more than she feared Azula, you literally see how her expression changes immediately. She completely loses it, ready to attack and kill her childhood friend in coldblood if Ty Lee didn't stop her.
This says a very important thing about Azula: her ideology. She internalized the "Fear is superior to love" mentality since young ages. So when Mai, her trusted ally, betrayed Azula and said her love for Zuko was greater than her fear for Azula, it breaks her. Not because she cared about Mai and Ty Lee so much, but because her ideology collapsed.
No wonder why she started to lose her. Her whole worldview started to collapse. And when Ozai said that he wasn't taking her with him, that was another hit for her fragile mental health. She believed that her father would give her anything she wanted as long as she was useful. But that notion also got shattered here. She loses her control and yells at her father. She says she never raised her voice at him before, so you can say how much she was uncontrolled there.
So it's not surprising that she started to hallucinate Ursa. And not a coincidence that her mother was keep saying "I love you Azula, not fear you". She got really obsessed with that love vs fear notion, and it messed up her entire worldview and everything that she relied on. Of course she would become paranoid at the end. She was no longer sure what she could depend on.
Azula cared about them. The fact that she was hurt that they betrayed her shows that there were some emotional attachment from her part. The problem is that she was raised by Ozai, who was all about "making everyone fear you to make them respect you".
This may work on Ozai since he didn't care about anyone else, as he would simply get rid of tools that lost their usefulness, but Azula broke because she actually saw them as friends.

Machiavelli teaches us that relying solely on fear is not an effective tactic because fear is not infallible. Eventually people get tired of being afraid and fight back against it and fear is especially vulnerable to two emotions: hatred and love. People can be motivated by hatred to act against fear if they hate what causes that fear or to act out of love in a way that completely outstrips their fear. Azula never did grasp that fact.

As tragic the aftermath was, I'm glad Ty Lee and Mai broke away from the toxic "friendship" and did what they wanted to do the whole time.
Mai and Ty Lee literally fought a bunch of benders, like dai lee agents, defeat kyoshi warriors and fought team avatar several times and they almost win everytime. They can literally beat those guards on their own. Or atleast knock many of them until Azula's chi is back to normal...
yah, they really can beat them possibly but Mai knows his uncle is the warden so she probably planned to ask him to let them go.
I thought about this and what you said is 100% correct. Mai and Ty Lee could have annihilated the guards, but they wouldn’t have been able to escape. The gondolas seem to be the only way in/out of Boiling Rock and we saw that they take time to get across. Azula and Ty Lee just took one of them back towards Mai. If Mai and Ty Lee tried to use it to escape, they’d be dead because Azula’s bending would have come back and she would’ve cut the line. Same with the guards. Anyone would cut the line and no one would try to save them when the Princess is after their necks.
That’s probably why Mai and Ty Lee didn’t put up a fight. They knew it was pointless
It would have been difficult because they were surrounded. They'd have to avoid getting hit from all directions, defeat all of them, and escape. All before Azula recovers. They could take her hostage but they're not the kind of people who would do that to a former friend.
It's not that they couldn't take Azula hostage. They'd be unable to.
@@MCSPARTAN501 I've thought about his situation a lot and figured that Azula is likely the most powerful bender in the entire show that we encounter. If she was prepared (and calm) she would absolutely decimate Ty Lee and Mai.
Mai's cold, rock solid determination as she actively and decidedly made her choice and at the same time accepted all the consequences including a fight against just about the most powerful character in the show, including Aang at this point without the avatar state, juxtaposed with Ty Lee completely losing her cheerful aloof facade and being clearly completely overstrained by the situation and openly overcome by fear and looking completely 100% unsure of her panicked reaction even after she already did it is so wonderful.
I think Azula miscalculated in two completely opposite ways. Mei turned on her because she overcame her fear of Azula, but Ty Lee didn't. She acted out of fear, meaning she didn't turn on Azula in spite of being scared, but *_because_* she was scared. Scared of Azula hurting her friend. So the very moment Azula shouts that Mei should have feared her more, she loses Ty Lee because she fears her too much.
After all, if you're scared of a wolf because it might hurt you or others when you're in the woods, you'll just avoid the woods and not let your children outside at night. But if a specific wolf pack is known as maneaters and are known to hunt people, and you think that they might come to your village and kill your children, you'll be even more scared of those wolves, but you won't therefore avoid the woods even more, you gather a bunch of men, take your guns into the wood, find the maneating pack and shoot the wolves.
A peasant may not act up against a tyrant because he's scared of what the tyrant may do, but if your family is starving even the scared farmers will take up arms and revolt.
A ruler that is scared of a young relative with a claim to the throne won't avoid that rival out of fear, but will have him killed.
Fear can be a deterrent from acting against you, but it can also be a motivator driving the same action.
Ty Lee chi blocking Azula is my favourite moment in the show. Love to see her finally thinking for herself.

See, people keep calling Azula this emotionless weapon, and while that is right, Azula does have some emotions. We see in The Beach how she does care for her fiends (remember how Azula felt bad about calling Tai Lee a tease?) If she really didn’t care, she wouldn’t have apologized. At the end of the day I think she did see them as friends, but she also saw them as assets as well
She had to see them as assets in order to serve her purpose as a mere extension of Ozai's will. Though she wanted to view them as friends, especially at the beach where she had gotten to live as a normal teenage girl for the first and only time.
She has been brainwashed by Ozai for her 14 years of her life to be a perfectionst prodigy killing machine who doesn't use emotion. Ozai told her that Fear makes her stronger so in order to make people respects her, she has to use fear. She thinks she is daddy's special little girl but his love is 0 since he never giving her love. And 0x100 = 0. Ozai never cares to both of his children nor his own Nation, he only cares on himself.
I agree but her power dynamics with her friends was toxic. She used fear to get what she wanted and that's how Ty Lee followed her. I guess she assumed the same of Mai, but when push came to shove, she realized that her rule through fear was not sustainable, that and she really did miscalculate with Mai. People can rise against fear when they've had enough or inspired by others to fight it. Love, it just flows naturally. In a way, Azula deluded herself. You cannot achieve love, friendship, etc, through fear. She learned this the hard way and her psyche snapped.
Honestly, I feel like Azula uses apologies like Katara uses her freezing powers to run on the ocean. It's a tool to manipulate some benefit to her. 😳
Azula was taught an ideology that completely contradicts human nature. She was taught that any kind of love is a weakness and that the only thing that will make people loyal is fear. You can see throughout the show that she really tries her very best to make Ty Lee and Mai fear her while also treating them like friends. She has no problem hugging them, she praises them for their good work, she gives them their own throne right next to her in the drill (seriously, I think I've never ever seen a villain give their servants their own throne), she goes on vacation with them. All of these things are things you don't do with people you don't consider friends

this scene is very important for young girls to watch. it shows that you can stand up against your bully and it's righteous to do so. girl bullies are usually mentally abusive, (as zuko once said, girls are crazy) a lot of the victims can't do anything cause they don't understand what's going on especially soft, cheerful girl like ty lee. I'm so proud of ty lee for deciding to stop azula and help mai

I love this line, because everything Azula said afterward was hollow and corny incomparison. The fact that was likely going to kill Mai, speaks volumes about her character and inability to understand love, empathy, connection and everything good.

I honestly wanted a few episodes of Mai and Ty Lee as part of Team Avatar.
Azula's gasp at 2:30 feels so real. There's so much more happening than shock in this moment & Grey DeLisle is able to capture it without a word. It drives home to me how betrayed Azula feels and I can't help but empathize with her right then.

Read a thing talking about Ty Lee messing up Azula, and how both her and Mai were shocked she’d do that. Mai was probably never really sure where she stood with Ty Lee, but with past experience, she naturally assumed that she was 2nd best to Azula, that Ty Lee would always pick Azula first. That’s why she’s so damn shocked when Ty Lee tries to save her, showing her true loyalty.
Ty Lee’s got a personality where you don’t expect her to be holding any +4 cards in Uno, because she’ll outright tell you what she has otherwise. It’s also pretty wholesome when you think about how Mai’s never been first pick, or she’s been put to the side. The beach episode explains it best, where she’s treated well, so long as she doesn’t act out of line. So when she finally acts in her own interests, how could she (or Azula for that matter) have expected Ty Lee to stand with her?

This scene has got to be one of the best in the entire show. I mean that. The fact that we’ve been building up to this since the third episode of book 2 when Azula first assembled her team only for everything to completely unravel all at once in less than three minutes. Fucking incredible

This here is the key difference between Zuko and Azula.
Azula commands respect by threatening and striking fear into people. But she has never once earned people's loyalty. With Zuko, no one has ever obeyed him out of fear. But the people who are loyal to him are loyal to him out of respect and love. With Azula, people can overcome their fear of her. But the people who love Zuko will always be by his side
This is even shown with their naval crews. When we first see Azula, she forces her way with fear and manipulation with the captain. He only follows orders out of fear for what comes next. Whereas with Zuko's crew, they start to respect his command even though he's been nothing but a moody teenager to them because he bravely sacrifices his well-being to save one of the crew members, and then deems getting them to safety was more important than getting the Avatar, his only motivation in life at the time (the crew learning his backstory doesn't hurt). Zuko, when even at his most villainous in the show, showed why he was a good person all along. Beautiful storytelling
Azula has credentials as a conqueror but never as a leader, especially a leader for her nation. Her flaws already shows that she doesn't have what it takes to be a leader. Zuko, on the other hands, does.

Sadly, Zuko didn't even look back. Mai could have died for him, but he wasn't even concerned and didn't mention her at all afterwards. He should be worried about her though. The episode after this one, Katara is all he could think about.

I really don't understand where so much love for Mai and Ty Lee in the community comes from, I have never liked them (To be fair, I have a specific taste when it comes to ATLA characters). Their whole "redemption" is just dumb. They got let off the hook way too easily by doing nothing except jumping off of a sinking ship that they willingly helped steer for months.
War criminals who were never prosecuted because of their political connections. The whole "we were actually the good guys all along, we were just forced to follow orders, so we don't have to answer for anything" thing is a joke. Things don't work that way.

Azula did think Mai and Ty Lee were subordinates, but a bigger part of her really thought of them as friends. That’s why she wanted a moment alone, that’s why she says “I never expected this from you”. It probably hurt even worse when Mai said she feared Azula, because now she thinks fear is the only thing people see in her. Makes her feel like no one can truly love her
This scene alone was a turning point for the show. When people are not truly evil(Mai and Ty-Lee), they get tired of doing evil stuff for so long.
